Welcome

from the Principal

Dear Notre Dame Community, As I looked at this annual report, it was a good reminder for me that there was more in the 2019-2020 year than managing the school in a pandemic. I was uplifted by pictures of people together at reunions and events. It was a powerful reminder of our Notre Dame connections, of easy conversations and fun times and of how many incredible people make up this community! My heart softened with every picture of our current Notre Dame students on campus — in the gym, in the hallways, at the picnic tables. I meet their absence every day of this 2020-2021 year and miss them deeply. We have learned much in this pandemic and I often think that St. Julie would be proud of us. I wonder if she would be thinking “they needed a good dose of resilience.” In the last three months of our 2019-2020 year, we rebuilt school for remote and hybrid learning, we pivoted with each new landscape, always keeping the mission of educating young women to be justice advocates, life-long learners, spiritual seekers and community leaders in front of mind and screen. Today, as we continue with mission first, we are stronger and have learned new and important skills. We have learned that the virtual, digital world can be a rich one filled with opportunities. When we approached our signature event, Women of Impact, as a virtual event, we had no idea that our audience would double and that people would join us from across the United States and abroad. The ND network was plugged in! And our two honorees, who you will read about in this report, inspired broadly. The impact now seems limitless. We have opened our Center for Women's Leadership. It is the significant statement on the corner of 2nd and Reed that we imagined. We will defer our celebration with you until our students return and we can be in community again, but in this report we recognize all who helped us achieve this endeavor. Our recognition of John M. Sobrato, our donor of the year, could not be more timely. He is an incredible mentor, donor and friend to Notre Dame. In this time, gifts abound. Your generosity has helped us build strong infrastructure that supports us through challenging times. We are indebted to all of you, alums, parents, friends. You sustain us. Ora et labora,

Mary Beth Riley, Principal

Education Shapes a Future Fatima Farheen Mirza '09 - Women of Impact Alum Honoree & ND Reads Author

R

eading the last page of The Great Gatsby as a student at Notre Dame, Fatima Farheen Mirza '09, this year's Women of Impact alum honoree and ND Reads author, had an epiphany. Words matter. "Writers don't just tell stories. They delicately make decisions for prose and punctuation and these decisions elicit a response in readers. They create a feeling and a mood." She photocopied that last page of The Great Gatsby and taped it to her locker, her bedroom wall and her binder. She was inspired. Fatima graduated from Notre Dame High School in 2009, a proud member of the Lime Green & Turquoise Ninjas. She remembers the Woman's Place Project of her freshman year and her honoree, marine biologist and author Rachel Carson. "I remember the creativity and sheer force of the women in the room being honored. All of the contributions and their unique battles and bravery in the face of them. I was really moved. We were girls then, becoming women. Unsure of what we would go on to do and to be surrounded by table settings for the women who had paved the path for us was really a sight to behold."

2 | Notre Dame San Jose | Report of Philanthropy 2019-2020

Throughout high school, Fatima was torn between her desire to please her family and wanting to walk her own path. "I didn't know if it would be possible to find harmony between the two. It's a burden familiar to us third-culture kids, children of immigrant families. As both parents and children are learning together how to navigate a new world and how to strike a balance between two cultures, two languages and, often, two faiths." With few role models, facing these challenges made it impossible to imagine a life different from what was expected of her and she struggled, academically and emotionally. She credits her AP Psychology class teacher, Ruth Burson, with literally changing the course of her life when she challenged Fatima to "make a deal with herself and just try for a semester. Just for herself." Having someone believe in her was a catalyst and, since, she has never stopped trying. In her talk to the community as this year's Women of Impact alum honoree, Fatima shared a passage from A Place for Us. Through her character, Hadia, Fatima shared how she, herself, began to view education. Hadia reflects: "And nothing compares to the promise of stepping

into a classroom knowing she would step out a different person. That she could learn something that would change the way she saw the whole world and her place in it. There's even the private hope that if she works as hard as she absolutely can that there's a chance she can sway the outcome of her life and maybe one day a door will be presented to her and the opportunity to walk through it."

Writers don't just tell stories. They delicately make decisions for prose and punctuation and these decisions elicit a response in readers. They create a feeling and a mood."

Her journey from ND took her to UC Riverside to study pre-med, following not her dream, but that of her parents. Soon, however, she turned to her passion, writing.

- Fatima Farheen Mirza '09

Writing and publishing her first novel was the culmination of eight years of hard work and moments of doubt, but the result has provided readers across generations and cultures an opportunity to see themselves and their struggle represented in a compassionate, honest way. In closing her talk to the community, Fatima shared some advice for students as well as adults. "Notre Dame is a place where young women can have the space and time to listen to their inner voice. Students, when you ask yourself, who am I? Who do I want to be? Listen to the voice that answers. Is it yours or that of your parents? How can you get better at hearing your inner voice? And, for the rest of us who have nieces, daughters, student co-workers, classmates. How can we approach one another with the intent to empower? How can we see the best in everyone we interact with even when they may be failing to see it themselves? And if we were to approach each other from our higher selves to their higher selves, what could we unlock in them without them even realizing it?" Coming full circle, Fatima, originally inspired and motivated by her ND education, has come home to inspire us in turn.

Reaching for the Stars Dr. Sandra Faber - Women of Impact Community Honoree & Featured Guest Speaker

M

any of us remember the news reports in 1990 - NASA's $1.5 billion dollar Hubble Space Telescope had failed its focusing test. Even the best images were blurred and surrounded by fuzzy rings. What most of us may not know is that Dr. Sandra Faber was instrumental in diagnosing the optical flaw causing the issues and finding a solution. Saving the day for space discovery? That's exactly what our 2020 Women of Impact honoree did! As a child, Dr. Faber had a natural curiosity about

After graduation she joined the team at the Lick Observatory, the first woman to do so. Excited about the equipment she had access to, which was far more powerful than the telescopes she had used in researching her thesis, she delved into her work and began to see discrepancies in the spectrum of light emitted by individual stars. "Basically, I was seeing motion," shares Dr. Faber. The observation led to the discovery and publishing of the Faber-Jackson Relation which describes the relationship between how fast stars orbit and how massive the galaxy is. Together

the stars and the galaxies above her. Having had a very ordinary upbringing, as she calls it, her journey to becoming a world-renowned and respected scientist has been generally unscripted. She recalls being surrounded by excellent teachers who supported and encouraged her love of science. "There were no role models in science when I was young. The scientists in textbooks were all men, and far from the ordinary person I saw myself as." Undaunted, she attended Swarthmore College, earning a degree in physics and went on to earn a PhD in astronomy from Harvard University.

Ever humble, Dr. Faber is quick to share the credit for all of her accomplishments with colleagues

4 | Notre Dame San Jose | Report of Philanthropy 2019-2020

with a grad student, she developed the first scaling model for galaxies. "We didn't really know what that would mean," says Faber. "But scaling laws really unlocked the secret of how stars shine." That was in 1976. By the early 80's she was beginning to think about how galaxies form. In 1984 she and three colleagues presented the first detailed treatment of galaxy formation based on cold, dark matter, which became the standard paradigm for galaxy and cluster formation in the Universe.

and collaborators she has worked with. "I've never done anything by myself," she shared in her talk. "Everything has been accomplished through collaboration. I could see discrepancies or something that looked wrong and would seize the opportunity and learn what I could and then find people to work with. I never really had a grand plan. You have to work hard day-to-day, do the best you can with what you have on that day and be very alert to new opportunities - a vacuum, a gap in thinking you can look at with new eyes and new approaches." Dr. Faber closed her talk with a message of encouragement and hope for Notre Dame students. "You are at a critical and difficult stage in life, trying to come to grips with the need to craft a story for your life. That can be daunting. Take each day as it is. Work hard. Assemble a basic foundation of skills and pursue the things you like to do and what interests you because that is where you will shine. And then let life take its course. You will find a way."

L'Esprit de Françoise Award John M. Sobrato — Mentor, Donor & Friend

T

he Sobrato Family name has become synonymous with philanthropy in Silicon Valley. As the only multi-generational family to sign the Giving Pledge and commit to donating the majority of their wealth to address some of society's most pressing issues, John M. Sobrato and his family serve as an example and inspiration for philanthropy. "Private school education is out of reach for a vast percentage of the population," explains John. "And while our teacher salaries barely allow them to live in Silicon Valley, the cost of education continues to rise faster than the median income, making it increasingly less accessible." His commitment to Catholic education is evident through annual gifts to support scholarships that enable talented but financially limited students to attend Notre Dame and other Catholic schools in Silicon Valley. When they recognize a problem, John and the Sobrato family take an active role in seeking solutions. Beyond financial support, John personally gives generously of his time to causes and organizations he cares about. When Notre Dame's principal, Mary Beth Riley, asked John

6 | Notre Dame San Jose | Report of Philanthropy 2019-2020

for help with a capital campaign, he offered to do much more by joining Notre Dame's Board of Directors. Although he has no daughters or family members who attended Notre Dame, John knew that he could be most helpful as a board member, having served on other local high school boards. What began as scholarship support for deserving students grew into an integral role in the building of the Center for Women's Leadership, serving as an honorary cochair of the capital campaign committee and making a lead gift that would inspire hundreds of other donors to join him. “John has brought so much to this organization,” says Mary Beth Riley. “He has challenged and supported me as a leader, encouraging the school and the board to step up to big goals. From building organizational strength through board development, being a thought partner in working with Caltrans to build a parking lot, to raising funds to build the Center for Women's Leadership, for seven years, John stood by our side. He never sugarcoats the hard realities while always championing the wins, big and small. We are indebted to his gracious support.”

Throughout his tenure on the board of directors, John served as chair of the Physical Resources Committee where he helped to shape the campus master plan and launch the first phase of construction. According to John, "For Notre Dame to remain competitive, it was clear that a new building was needed. The Center for Women's Leadership is the first step in a master plan that will transform the entire campus over time." John believes in Catholic education, where forming the whole person is as important as providing them with the knowledge they need for college and beyond. "The formation aspect is as essential as providing a safe and nurturing environment, particularly for young women. Notre Dame does that and has been doing it since 1851." When asked if he would allow us to honor him with the Françoise Blin de Bourdon donor of the year award, John was reluctant, stating that he and the Sobrato family “tend to get a disproportionate share of the praise for our charitable work when the fact is this represents little sacrifice compared to those who must forego important personal pleasures to contribute to society. There are many people who have worked much harder, made much greater sacrifices, and created more benefit from their work to society than I.”

John and his wife, Timi, have big hopes and plans to make a broader impact, both nationally and globally, in the future with an initial focus on sustainable agriculture and reducing our dependence on animal agriculture to improve our health, the environment, global food security and animal welfare.

It is true that John is recognized often for his many contributions to the larger Silicon Valley and Catholic communities but we feel that our Françoise award is more than another accolade. It is a recognition of a caring mentor who has strengthened the future for the young women of Notre Dame for today and years to come. Our small token of appreciation at our donor reception on January 8 at 6:00pm comes from our hearts. Please join us virtually to celebrate our friend, John M. Sobrato. You can RSVP on our website at www. ndsj.org/donor-reception.

ND Alums Give Back to Move Us Forward

A

s the realities of on-going remote learning began to take root, Notre Dame faced a number of challenges. We are grateful to the many alums who stepped forward to share their time and talent to support their alma mater. As we committed to a program of deep introspection and study of our policies and practices around race, equity and inclusion, Jessica Pierce '02, founder of Piece by Piece Strategies, offered her expertise. "The decision to come back to Notre Dame draws from my own personal experience of ND as a safe space to be myself, but also a space that made me question and create new spaces as the only black student in my class," shared Jess. "Transparently, I was also figuring out my own sexuality at the time. How could I watch the institution take on work that I have personal expertise in and not step up to help? ND is a part of who I am to this day." Jess is now leading a school-wide Race, Equity & Inclusion project that includes student, faculty and staff trainings, as well as a taskforce to review and audit institutional policies. This work is ongoing and we look forward to sharing a fuller report with the community. Mirai Shah '14 kicked off the Steam Speaker Series talking about her pathway as a data scientist working at Facebook. Mirai graduated from Harvard and has a background in applied mathematics and biology. Asha DuMontier '11 jumped in to help support our annual Solidarity & Soup Dinner, giving testimony to the impact participating in a justice immersion trip as a student at ND has had on her life.

Top to Bottom: Jessica Pierce '02 Mirai Shah '14 Asha DuMontier '11 Loren Gutierrez '15 Milan Williams '17 8 | Notre Dame San Jose | Report of Philanthropy 2019-2020

Loren Gutierrez '15 beamed in to our Women of Impact event from New York City to talk about the value of supporting students through scholarship. Loren shared her story, from Our Lady of Grace to Notre Dame to Syracuse University, where she graduated with a degree in industrial and interaction design.

Milan Williams '17 joined us from Harvard University where she is a PRISE research fellow developing a novel educational platform for quantum computer circuit composition, execution and analysis. Milan hosted a panel discussion with WOI honoree Sandy Faber. And then there is Inem Richardson '16. Inem received the disappointing news that her Fulbright Scholarship, with which she planned to document the history of the Burkinabé revolution from a popular/grassroots perspective with an emphasis on women in the struggle, would be deferred until fall of 2021. A recent graduate of Barnard College where she was a student of African studies and comparative literature, she emailed Principal Mary Beth Riley to see if there was anything she could help with. There was so much! • As a mentor, she is working with current Black Student Union members as they focus on themes of community, education and growth. With this year's president and vice president (Rachel Aguilar '21 and Jordan Paran '21), the group is working to ensure the success of the next generation of BSU members. • Under the direction of Susana Garcia, vice principal of enrollment, Inem is supporting the recruitment of the Class of 2025. • Along with Eran DeSilva, director of teaching and learning, and Notre Dame faculty she is working to create inclusive curriculum that reflects the diversity of our student body.

Because of Notre Dame's deep, longstanding commitment to social justice, it is the appropriate environment to begin working to envision a future in which education can be a profound tool for freedom. I am confident that in the years to come Notre Dame will continue to be at the forefront of challenging the status quo and working towards a better world." - Inem Richardson '16

"Notre Dame broadened my worldview and challenged me to think past my own corner of this planet. I began to see how the struggles in my hometown are connected to struggles around the world," shares Inem. "It was these lessons that I took with me from Notre Dame that led me to spend my time in college travelling to study and connect with grassroots organizers, workers, farmers and youth in social movements. It was precisely this experience that drew me back to Notre Dame after my Fulbright was postponed. The only place back in San Jose that I could imagine myself was Notre Dame. While Notre Dame was ahead of the game when it came to teaching Latin American liberation theology, I could imagine how transformative it would be for students to learn in-depth histories of African/African diasporic, Indigenous, and Global South resistance all throughout the curriculum. Students could learn about maroon societies to understand settler colonialism even before they go to college." We are so grateful for our alums who respond to the needs of their alma mater. They make us better and move us forward!

Three Pathways, One Legacy Hayes Sisters Impact a more Hopeful Future

S

an Jose changed dramatically over the course of the 16 years that separated the graduation of the eldest Hayes sister, Marie, in 1939 and youngest, Joanne, in 1955. The Santa Clara Valley went from being the largest canning and dried-fruit processing center of the world to the center of electronics innovation and growth, with companies including Hewlett-Packard and Fairchild Semiconductor leading the way. And in the transition from the Valley of the Hearts Delight, a legacy family of three sisters created influence and impact as their pathways unfolded. The oldest of six siblings, Marie Hayes '39 Schutz often forged her own path. At Notre Dame she excelled in French and began what would be a life-long friendship with Sister Teresa Gustin. Sister Gustin was pleasantly surprised at her young pupil's language and culture skills having thought that Notre Dame was "just a bunch of farm girls." After graduating from Notre Dame she attended San Jose State University. Reluctant to embrace a prescribed future of convent or classroom, she joined the Navy

WAVES, deciphering Japanese weather code for the war effort. The dawning perceptions of gender equality playing out on a grand scale throughout the war germinated quietly in her personal subconscious in the WAVES. She later reflected that “the idea of some being boy jobs and some being girl jobs was cockeyed.” After the war, she lived at International House at UC Berkeley during the “golden years” as the United Nations was coming into being. It was at I-House that her characteristic, ever-hopeful and expansive world view came into focus and she discovered her passion for libraries. Everywhere the family went, a local library got the benefit of her tending, from Albany and Woodside High Schools, to the periodicals department of the Hoover Institution. A long-time member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), she was active for many years in groups seeking world peace and community building. She spent her twilight years at the Friends House in Santa Rosa where she peacefully passed away in August at the age of 98. Middle sister Marianne (Chickie) Hayes '42 Morrisey attended Notre Dame des Victoires in

San Francisco until the family moved to San Jose. She finished grammar school at St. Mary's before attending Notre Dame where she served as student body president and captain of the basketball team. Following graduation, she attended San Jose State and began teaching, a career that was cut short by marriage and her passion - raising five children. A devout Catholic, Chickie's faith was everything to her and she regularly attended mass and prayed the rosary. In 2015 she moved to Villa Siena in Mountain View where she passed away peacefully in early October at the age of 96. Over the years, she shared stories of her Notre Dame education with ND students who often volunteered at Villa Siena for events and activities. The youngest of the Hayes sisters, Joanne Hayes '55 Schott enjoyed the arts at Notre Dame, taking piano lessons in the old O'Connor mansion and learning to sew. At the time, students could choose the college prep track or business track. Joanne chose the college track and went on to study history at Notre Dame de Namur University. For Joanne, life has revolved around her seven children and many grandchildren. She cherishes her family and the time she spent at Notre Dame High School and has been a proud supporter of her alma mater, Catholic education and women's leadership for many years, believing these are key to a hopeful future. Joanne has been part of four ThirtyOne Women circles. The first student she helped sponsor will be graduating from college in the spring. She has also supported Notre Dame's Women of Impact event and contributed to major campaigns.

ThirtyOne Women Mary Quilici '75 Aumack and Maria Bellafronto founded ThirtyOne Women in 2011 as a way to help girls from Our Lady of Grade Nativity School afford a Notre Dame High School education. The concept is simple a group of 30 women committed to giving a fixed amount each month for four years. The outcome - four years of a Notre Dame Catholic education for one young woman who then becomes the center of the circle and the thirtyfirst woman. The money generated by each group of women covers the costs associated with high school education including tuition and other fees. Circle 6

Sister Circles Alums interested in forming a circle to support a young woman with tuition assistance can join together by making a commitment for four years. The benefit of a Sister Circle is that a circle can be formed with alums from a certain class or via peer-to-peer and allows donors to meet with the identified student.
