Welcome
from the Head of School
Dear Notre Dame Community, Reading this annual report brings back all the glamour of the 2020-2021 school year: Zoom meetings in pajama bottoms; Zoom school in pajama bottoms; arrays of masking accessories! It is a wonder that we managed a new way of school and successfully stewarded our students through classes and activities. What a thrill and relief it was to return to campus this fall! Although we had to trade our pajamas for professional wear, we are still able to put our masks to good daily use. You were all so loyal and generous during the 2020-2021 school year. As we were all unsure of what the next day would bring, we never worried about our financial health as you, our donors, never wavered. We are a blessed community with so many loyal friends. In this report, it is an honor to recognize Andrea and Pat Caldwell, recipients of our annual Esprit de Françoise Award. As you will read, Andrea and Pat continue to support Notre Dame well beyond their daughter Kelsey’s (’12) time here. We are truly blessed. As we live into the various stages of this pandemic, we continue to adapt. We have claimed the best of virtual environments to engage our friends afar, and we have adjusted to doing everything masked: student dances, basketball games, music concerts – everything! The students and teachers march forward, engaging in diversity, social justice and cultural discovery in new ways. Student leadership further develops understanding of diversity; students lean into their passion around social justice issues and traveling to learn about other cultures pivots to virtual. I expect how the school managed during the pandemic will be a footnote in Notre Dame’s long history. And the take-away will be, they did well. They thrived. Ora et labora,

From the moment Camille Broussard '04 Robinson, our Women of Impact alum honoree, stepped onto the Notre Dame campus at Open House, she knew this was where she belonged. "I looked around at the wealth of diversity," shared Camille, "and immediately felt connected to this community of young women who were so passionate about their school." From the beginning, Dr. Robinson found a supportive environment at Notre Dame. "At Notre Dame, I felt the freedom to be myself, that nerdy and spirited young woman wearing her hair in a bun every day, who did cheerleading all four years, who was inspired by Mrs. Evashenk in freshman biology class to pursue a STEM career, who didn’t feel any pressure to impress anyone or feel the need to dim my intelligence and who felt empowered to be a leader and care for others. Notre Dame started my journey of belonging to an empowered group of women who lead the way and prepared me to be a leader who cares about her community and someone who can bring her authentic self to the table." After graduating from Notre Dame, her path to becoming a pediatrician was challenging. "My journey in medicine hasn’t always been easy," shared Dr. Robinson. "I’ve experienced racism, microaggressions and exclusion on this journey. I was one of very few women of color in my medical school class and pediatric residency program." Her experience was not unique. Currently black women make up only 2.6% of all active physicians in the United States. When Dr. Robinson attended medical school, the numbers were even more dismal.

Despite the challenges she faced, Dr. Robinson persevered and holds degrees from Howard University, UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco. She is now a public-health-trained pediatrician specializing in adolescent and addiction medicine. She is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of vulnerable youth by eradicating health inequities. She also staffs an adolescent and young adult medicine clinic at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego providing primary and sub-specialty care to military dependents. "I am often the only woman physician of color that patients I have cared for have seen. These patients have told me that they finally felt seen, heard, and cared for with empathy. My youngest patients have even exclaimed that I’m a real life Doc McStuffins!" “Representation, whether in a cartoon, book, television series or real-life matters, but it can’t stop at diversity and representation. Inclusion of diverse voices matters just as much. I chose adolescent medicine because while some people see adolescents and young adults as too far gone, all I see is potential and I won’t give up on them,” she says.
Through her work as assistant professor of pediatrics at UC San Diego, Dr. Robinson embodies the hallmarks of a Notre Dame education. She is a lifelong learner, spiritual seeker, justice advocate and community leader who serves as a mentor committed to training and uplifting the next generation of pediatricians. Her journey is one of passion, commitment and compassion. In staying committed to equity and inclusion, she inspires us all to do the same. Passion and commitment are also strong traits shared with Aparna Bawa, Notre Dame's Women of Impact community honoree. She currently serves as chief operating officer for Zoom. For many institutions, including Notre Dame, Zoom was instrumental in the successful move to remote learning in March 2020 when the COVID pandemic shut down the state. The pandemic required a difficult pivot. Teachers, some of whom never taught online, had to find creative, engaging and reliable ways to conduct classes. Zoom allowed our teachers to continue to use many of the same teaching methods they used in traditional classrooms, such as small group discussions.
The 13th annual Women of Impact Luncheon was broadcast from the San Jose Museum of Art with a limited number of guests attending live and the majority attending virtually. For the second year in a row, the virtual option enabled alums and supporters of women’s education from all over the globe to participate in this annual celebration of women’s leadership.
Aparna recognized the role that Zoom played in education during the pandemic and took time to acknowledge her colleague, Notre Dame alum Michelle Afshar ‘02 Dotson. "I am proud to be part of the team effort that helped develop Zoom’s plans to offer free service to schools," she shared. "Our company has such a focus on education. We had always targeted education at the university level to help foster inclusivity. So offering it to all schools was really a no-brainer." Aparna attended Marquette University where she earned a BA in accounting followed by a juris doctorate from Harvard Law. Throughout her career, she has focused on strategy and operations, corporate law, technology and investment banking. Prior to joining Zoom, she was a senior vice president and general counsel for Magento Commerce. Aparna is a model of what is possible when you combine determination, curiosity, fearless decision-making and an unwavering commitment to continuous problem solving.

Today, the Sisters’ ministries on five continents center around education as well as social justice, climate justice and pastoral care efforts with a network of lay partners. At Notre Dame San Jose, we are blessed to continue that legacy and respond to the signs of the times. Our work today includes those same priorities within the educational framework experienced by

Sister Gillian Wallace, the newest Sister of Notre Dame de Namur in the province, joined the religious studies faculty in August 2021. Here she works with freshman students in their introductions to Julie and Françoise, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and the Hallmarks. She also teaches upper level philosophy courses.
These Sisters work alongside the men and women that serve as faculty and staff at Notre Dame San Jose. Their spiritual leadership, in and out of the classroom, is a blessing. When we engage the practice of reading the signs
of the times, there is inevitably a moment that calls for new vision, new imagination, new solutions. In our own Notre Dame San Jose

context, this response to the community around us calls forward a greater engagement with the spiritual skill sets for listening, dialogue and discernment. Our Notre Dame Catholic perspective gathers together a multi-faith community from whom, and about whom, we learn together. In our 21st century milieu, we need spiritual seekers willing to work and pray side-by-side to advance the common good. When Notre Dame opened the doors of the Center for Women's Leadership last year, one of the exciting prospects of the building’s design was the inclusion of spaces for our students and community members to engage in spiritual practice, interfaith dialogue and justice advocacy. One of these signature spaces is the Multifaith Prayer & Meditation Room, which embodies our Catholic in the 21st century commitment to multifaith inclusion and spiritual leadership.

The space has felt special since it opened. It is peaceful and calming, something that can be difficult to find on a busy high school campus. Visitors can often feel the energy, as if the space is inviting introspection and meditation. In September, multifaith women leaders officially blessed this sacred space in a ceremony that was livestreamed to the ND community. That sense of wonder and discovery is what author Aimee Nezhukumatathil hopes to rekindle with her latest novel, World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments, chosen as this year's ND Reads book. Each year Notre Dame selects a book to read and discuss as a community of students, parents, faculty, alums and friends. Books are selected that explore and deepen a core theme in the Education for Justice and Leadership initiative and engage our community in academic scholarship and intentional dialogue. World of Wonders is the debut book of nonfiction for Aimee, although she is no stranger to publishing, having written four award-winning poetry anthologies. She also serves as a professor of English and creative writing at the University of Mississippi's masters program. Due to pandemic restrictions, for the second year ND Read's author visit was remote. In addition to joining the entire student body virtually during mentoring, Aimee joined Dr. Harrison's English class for a conversation about poetry and how it has influenced her career. Together with the students, they read and

essays that take us from India to Greece and across the United States. Through her eyes as a mother, wife, daughter and teacher, we learn lessons from nature. We learn to smile in the face of unkindness from the axolotl, how fireflies can conjure memories and how the narwhal can teach us to survive in hostile environments. Growing up as a "brown girl," in America in the 1980's, the daughter of a Filipina mother and Indian father, Aimee didn't see anyone who looked like her in any aspect of the pop culture she loved. However, she could always find wonder, solace and joy in nature. In a visit with Kari Climer's AP English class, Aimee discussed how she came with her own perspective and experience in the genre of environmental writing, which the class had been discussing through the Transcendentalists. "If you're open to wonder, if you make curiosity and wonder a practice, you will never feel alone," shared Aimee. "Wonder forces us to admit vulnerability. If you have wonder about something you are admitting that
you're not the expert. My hope is that if you can do that with plants and animals, it will make you want to learn more about people that are not like you." The book is also beautifully illustrated. "After a lifetime of reading books about the outdoors that didn’t feature authors who even remotely looked like me, it was of utmost importance to find the right illustrator to join me in
About the Illustrator World of Wonders is beautifully illustrated by Fumi Nakamura. Born in Shizuoka, Japan in 1984, Fumi grew up surounded by beautiful mountains and the ocean which have had a lasting impact on her art. A graduate of San Jose State University, she lives in New York City where she works as a freelance illustrator and designer.
presenting these essays," shared Aimee. “I was adamant about having an Asian-American illustrator. I wanted my author photo to be in color so people can see my brown skin. I wanted these names that are not normally associated with nature writing. I think we’ve shown that our country is ready for a different view of the outdoors. Fumi Nakamura not only captured the exquisite scientific detail but also captured that exuberance and love that I hope to convey in my prose. I completed the essays first and was delighted every single time that Fumi captured the tone and mood that I was going for." Aimee had an important message to share with our Notre Dame learning community. "To have wonder in your life is free and it doesn't require electricity," shared Aimee. "Don't let your entertainment be dependent on electricity. The majority of your time should not be spent in front of a screen. Whatever you do, don't let yourself reach a point where you're no longer curious. If you're curious about the planet, you will never be bored."

chairs, Colleen and Bob Altendorf, they stepped up to co-chair the event in 2010. Under Andrea and Pat’s leadership, the committee has evolved into one of the most sought-after volunteer opportunities
at Notre Dame. Volunteers spend months planning and organizing a feast served family-style in Julie Billiart Hall. The Caldwells lead every meeting with an atmosphere of community building. The volunteers work hard, play hard together and develop strong relationships through their service. On the day of the Crab Fest volunteers arrive as early as 6:00am to start cooking, decorating and preparing for the moment that the doors to the event open to the crowd. Andrea says that her favorite part of the event is “immediately prior to opening the doors to the attendees. I look around the gym to get a final glimpse of the decorations and I see the excitement on the faces of the volunteers and students ready to sell raffle tickets.” Through their commitment to Notre Dame, Andrea and Pat have helped raise well over a million dollars to support co-curricular programs through the Crab Fest event. The Crab Fest has become so popular that, in 2018, hundreds of prospective guests were poised at their computers at midnight to register for the event like teenagers trying to get tickets to the hottest concert in town. And, in 2019, the Crab Fest sold out in less than 5 minutes. While much of the hype is due to the great food and desire to support Notre Dame, it is also due to the fun atmosphere that Andrea, Pat and their committee of volunteers bring to the event. In the midst of the pandemic last year when everyone was cancelling events, Andrea and Pat rallied the volunteers to keep the event alive with a drive-through, Crab Fest-to-go event. And as with everything they lead, it was an unbelievable success. Volunteers lined the parking lot with pompoms, keeping the atmosphere festive as cars of happy supporters drove through to pick up crab dinners. When asked what they value most about Notre Dame, they said “the friendships and a chance to make a difference by raising a few dollars for a special group of young women.” Through their selfless gifts of time, talent and treasure, Andrea and Pat Caldwell demonstrate their support for the mission of Notre Dame San Jose. Andrea and Pat are true and loyal friends.

It provides a place where all the cultural clubs and leadership groups on campus can come together to talk about various issues and communicate about changes they would like to see in the school. Their mission statement, which was written by the members, states, “We the Diversity Council work collectively to strengthen our sense of pride and community at Notre Dame while recognizing and celebrating our differences. We strive to educate our community about our unique identities, cultures and experiences. We seek to foster a sense of respect and appreciation for diversity as we empower one another. Trained, in that they can facilitate difficult conversations, or they can facilitate in such a way that they're engaging their peers, and making sure that people are heard and that their opinions are taken into account as we move forward. I'm incredibly amazed at their level of organization, their level of expertise, their ability to facilitate conversations with students.” The council is currently working on a multi-cultural event for the spring.

Amplifying Student Voices for Justice In December of 2019, Kristine Pashin ’22 had an idea to create a platform for students to speak about issues and be part of the conversations that were happening in the community and around the country. As the Black Lives Matter movement and other social justice issues were brought to the forefront, Pashin reached out to Anna Yang ’23. Kristine and Anna called on their experience as editors of Notre Dame's student newspaper, the Crown & Shield, and years of journalism to establish The Journals of Justice, a non-profit online journal with contributions from students across the country. Their first issue came out in June 2020 and featured articles from students in the Bay Area. The reach has since grown to include chapters in other states. “We have about 660 contributors who write for

partnered with organizations to start workshops and host panels about youth advocacy,” said Yang. “We welcome student work of any kind, from art to social justice articles. We really wanted to give middle school and freshmen the tools they need to make their own change in the world,” shared Kristine.
Connecting Across the Miles When the pandemic resulted in the cancellation of Notre Dame's immersion trip to Japan, Mito Funatsu '22, president of the Japan Club, found an alternate way to connect with students thousands of miles away. Mito reconnected with her childhood friend Saya Miyake. The two met in preschool in Japan before Mito’s family moved to the United States. Their conversations, which ranged from general life to social justice issues, inspired them both to offer a similar experience to their peers. Mito and Saya brought their proposal for a cross-cultural program to Notre Dame High School in the United States and Keio Girls Senior High School in Japan. The program, which included 21 students, consisted of three, one-hour Zoom sessions. “The first meeting was just ‘get to know each other,’” explained Mito. The questions included simple things about family and school hours. “The questions sound very mundane but it’s so interesting because it really brought out the cultural differences,” said Mito. The second meeting was a discussion about education, ranging from school life, what clubs and activities students were involved in, to how COVID had impacted their school experience. Students from both countries bonded over shared experiences and struggles. The third session discussed food and pop culture. “It was really interesting because they were surprised to find out that anime was such a prevalent thing here. And I was surprised to find out that they were watching Gilmore Girls. “I didn't know that was a thing in Japan,” shared Mito.

In giving to ND as an alum, I reflect on my immigrant parents who came to the U.S. with just their hopes and their education and the sacrifices they made to provide me and my sister, Lisa, also an ND alum, the gift of a quality education rooted in faith. Like many of us, we can never repay our parents for everything, including what we learned and gained from our ND education, from which we benefited more than just academically. It's that unique experience of an ND education that makes many ND grads into leaders who want to serve."

ThirtyOne Women Mary Quilici '75 Aumack and Maria Bellafronto founded ThirtyOne Women in 2011 as a way to help girls from Our Lady of Grade Nativity School afford a Notre Dame High School education. The concept is simple - a group of 30 women committed to giving a fixed amount each month for four years. The outcome - four years of a Notre Dame Catholic education for one young woman who then becomes the center of the circle and the thirty-first woman. The money generated by each group of women covers the costs associated with a high school education including tuition and other fees. Circle 7

I support ND because I am a feminist, therefore women's education is important to me. I grew up at a time when very few women pursued higher education. My support is through ThirtyOne Women because so many women are denied the chance of a formal education to allow them to pursue worthwhile lifelong careers.

At my age I remember being counseled to pursue teaching or nursing or secretarial work. I also remember that my mother had to quit working as a teacher because she got married. The rational was that her job would go to a man who was supporting a family and that her husband would support her. My grandmother was one of the first to graduate from the University of Manitoba. but she too was not allowed to work after her marriage. We have come a long way baby but not, in my opinion, far enough. Magaret Cucuzza

Alums interested in forming a circle to support a young woman with tuition assistance can join together by making a commitment for four years. The benefit of a Sister Circle is that a circle can be formed with alums from a certain class or via peer-to-peer and allows donors to meet with the identified student.

Ways to Give Cash Outright gifts of cash are acceptable in any form. Checks should be made payable to “Notre Dame High School.” Gifts by Credit Card Donors wishing to make payments using a credit card may do so online at www.ndsj.org/donate. Gifts by ACH/EFT Donors wishing to make payments using an Electronic Funds Transfer from a checking or savings account will be contacted to set up a FACTS account after receipt of a completed pledge form. Gifts of Stock, Securities or Personal Property Donating a highly appreciated asset may allow you to avoid a significant portion of your tax liability while still receiving a charitable deduction. The gift of an appreciated asset is also a powerful way to support the mission of Notre Dame High School. How Can I Make a Gift of Appreciated Securities to Notre Dame San Jose? The following information can assist your stock broker or bank in the transfer and delivery of securities: For Donations to Tuition Assistance Security Deposit Morgan Stanley DTC: 0015 Account: 814-017750 Account Name: Notre Dame High School San Jose
For Donations to the Endowment Security Deposit Morgan Stanley DTC: 0015 Account: 814-015848 Account Name: Notre Dame High School San Jose For Donations to the Annual Fund Security Deposit Morgan Stanley DTC: 0015 Account: 814-017749 Account Name: Notre Dame High School San Jose If you hold the physical securities, you can directly mail or hand deliver the certificate(s) without any endorsement or assignment. Appreciated Securities Please enclose a letter stating the purpose of your gift. And, in a separate envelope, please include a signed stock power form for each gift. Please note that, except for your signature exactly as your name appears on the stock certificate, the stock power form should be blank. You may obtain a stock power form from your banker or broker. Please notify us of all stock or securities gifts. A transfer document only gives the name of the stock and the value per stock. It can take months to discover the name of the donor who actually made the stock gift unless we hear from you first. Employee Matching Gifts Your employer may also match your gifts, thereby doubling your support for the young women at Notre Dame High School. Through a corporate matching gifts program at your workplace you can make your gift go twice as far. Some
companies will also match gifts made by retirees and spouses of employees and even volunteer hours. Contact your personnel or human resources department and fill out the matching gifts form to initiate a match. Memorial & Tribute Donations Gifts may be made in honor or memory of a family member, friend, alum, colleague, etc. Often given to celebrate a significant life achievement or anniversary or in lieu of flowers for a funeral service, memorial and tribute gifts are recognized in the annual report and with a letter of acknowledgement to the honoree or their family. Memorial and tribute donations may be made by check or credit card. Vehicle Donation Notre Dame will accept vehicles. To donate, please fill out the form on our website at www.ndsj.org/support-nd/ ways-to-give Contact Information If you have any questions or need additional information about any of these ways to give, please contact the development department.
