Welcome from the Principal Dear Notre Dame Community, As we look back on the 2015-2016 school year, we are grateful for your support. Notre Dame continues to build capacity to ensure its strength for today and for many years to come. In 2015 we laid the groundwork for a campus vision that will provide resources for students in the 21st century. We need to create new spaces for our mission and we now look to next steps to develop the funding to support the vision. That is the work in front of us. Last year we also embraced our newly-minted strategic plan! Our five initiatives are bold and mission-aligned: being an environment of innovation and Catholic in the 21st century, charting career and life pathways for leadership and ensuring a life-long network of Notre Dame alumnae. In this report, you will see evidence of all these efforts as you read about our new biotechnology program, international service projects and women of impact. And, I don’t think that you can miss the powerful influence of alumnae in our community! The articles on Maria Auxilio Cervantes ’36 Viramontes and Laura Aceves ’56 Liccardo speak to community, tradition, and the strength of women’s education. Alumnae make their institution strong. They are an organic, connected network and they generate social and professional connections that support their alma mater. Notre Dame benefits from their life stories and the skills and experiences they share with us. They are role models for our students and ambassadors for us around the globe. Today we recognize, more than ever, the need for this Notre Dame mission that educates women for leadership in the world. You do too, and we thank you for supporting us. Ora et labora!

Centenarian Returns to her Alma Mater

M

aria Auxilio Cervantes ’36 Viramontes recently celebrated her 102nd birthday surrounded by family and friends. The joyful occasion was also celebrated by her home parish, St. Clare’s, who sang Happy Birthday to her at Sunday mass. Auxilio (Auxie) was born in Jalpa, in the State of Zacatecas, Mexico, on October 31 in 1914. Worried about the persecution of Catholics and the safety of Auxie’s brothers, who were in the seminary, the family immigrated to the United States through El Paso, in the 1920’s. “Religion was very important to my family,” shared Auxie. “While we were still living in Jalpa, my family hid some of the church’s artifacts to keep them safe and we went to mass in the middle of the night.” The family lived in Santa Cruz for a time before settling in downtown San Jose.

High School for a year before transferring to Notre Dame. “The nuns at St. Mary’s were always encouraging us to apply to Notre Dame and I loved Notre Dame from the beginning. I took Italian for two years and earned high honors.” As a reward for earning top marks in the class, she was awarded a medal and given the opportunity to travel to Italy. The cost was minimal, with students only expected to pay for the fare to New York. “My father, however, wouldn’t let me go. He was afraid there would not be enough supervision. My parents were very strict — we went shopping downtown or to school in pairs. And we wore white gloves for formal events.”

“San Jose was a small town where everyone knew everyone else. We met through church and friendships and relationships were not based on race or income.”

“The education at Notre Dame was excellent,” explains Auxie. “The school gave me an excellent education and the skills necessary for a successful life.” At the time, students could choose to follow an academic pathway or a commercial pathway which provided them with

the skills they needed to succeed in business, among them accounting, clerical, transcription and shorthand. “I remember transcribing President Roosevelt’s Fireside Chats in shorthand to practice my skills.” Auxie and her husband, Ruben Viramontes, were engaged on the day Pearl Harbor was bombed. “He knew he would be going into the service and wanted to propose. Then he joined the Navy.” They were married in 1942. As World War II went on, Auxie’s brothers served as air raid wardens. Although they were never called into service, Auxie and her sisters were recruited as members of the message brigade. Auxie remembers having to keep the shades closed at night and worrying and praying for family, friends and neighbors who were serving overseas. Ruben and Auxie had five children, including three girls. When it came time for them to attend high school, Notre Dame was a natural choice just as it had been for many of the women in the family.

Auxie, her sister Acela Maria Cervantes ’42 Bernal and daughter Lydia Jane Viramontes ’64 Schott recently returned to Notre Dame for a visit. Although they found the campus had certainly changed, all three were happy to learn that strong Catholic education was still a priority. Much in the same way as Auxie and her sisters, today’s students are still being taught ‘what they need to know for life.’ ■

Biotechnology Program at Notre Dame Education for College & Career Success

A

t Notre Dame, hands-on labs and opportunities for experiential learning have been integrated throughout the science curriculum for several years. This year, as part of an ongoing commitment to introducing young women to emerging careers, particularly in fields where women have traditionally been underrepresented, Notre Dame has added a new biotechnology laboratory course as well as an Independent Science Research Program. These are opportunities for students that mirror those found at the college level.

Students in the class learn to use a variety of equipment. For example, they become familiar with DNA analysis using gel electrophoresis and work with spectrophotometers to conduct a variety of experiments. The newest addition to the lab is a set of r3bEL 3D Bioprinters, which allow students to print using biological materials such as enzymes, algae and bacteria. From an educational and career pathway perspective, practical experience with topics such as bioprinted enzymes and bacterial assays serve as a great tool for understanding biological systems in many applications such as enzyme engineering and drug discovery. L’Esprit de Françoise Award Recipients Laura Aceves ’56 Liccardo & Sal Liccardo

Y

ou may recognize the Liccardo name as that of San Jose’s current mayor. But you may not know that mayor Sam Liccardo inherits all of his better qualities from parents who graduated from two of the oldest institutions in San Jose – Notre Dame High School and Bellarmine College Preparatory. Laura Aceves ’56 Liccardo credits Notre Dame with providing her the focus and discipline she needed to be successful. Although born in San Francisco, she is a true native of the Santa Clara Valley with roots dating back to Jose Francisco Ortega, a Spanish scout on the Gaspar de Portola expedition of 1769-70. Shocked by the attack on Pearl Harbor and fearful that bombs could reach San Francisco, Laura’s father, Ted Aceves, packed up his family and returned to the Santa Clara Valley. The family settled in Los Gatos, buying a home near the Jesuit novitiate for a whopping $3,500. Growing up as the only girl on both sides of her family, and in her neighborhood, Laura played with her brothers and their friends, never considering gender a limitation. Her grandparents compared Laura and her brothers to The Katzenjammer Kids, a comic strip featuring three brothers who rebelled against authority, running wild and playing in the streets. Laura spent her childhood playing in their Los Gatos neighborhood, shooting marbles and swimming in the lake at the Jesuit novitiate. While Laura was in middle school, her mother became ill and enrolled Laura at St. Mary’s boarding school. Impressed with the education at St. Mary’s, Laura’s mother urged her to apply to Notre Dame but Laura wasn’t ready. In time, Laura made the choice to transfer to Notre Dame. Laura immediately loved the sisterhood and even the uniform! At the end of her junior year, Laura’s mother passed away. remembers how her Notre Dame friends helped her through that difficult time. Despite this setback, Laura was determined to graduate from Notre Dame. She thrived academically and spiritually under the careful watch of the Sisters of Notre Dame. While she was serious about school, Laura continued to have fun with her friends. She was a cheerleader, played on the basketball and volleyball teams and loved senior glen. When one of her friends asked how she managed to get a date every weekend, Laura told them that she went to chapel every Tuesday to pray for a date. Pretty soon the chapel was filled on Tuesdays! Laura dreamed of becoming a lawyer and was accepted to Stanford, but was discouraged from that pursuit by her brothers. Needing to be able to support herself, she chose to attend O’Connor School of Nursing. Laura intended to work as a nurse and go to law school at night. Instead, she met Sal Liccardo. Sal grew up on North 5th Street. His father worked for Lucky stores, eventually opening Notre Dame Market, which was located behind the DeAnza Hotel (the sign is still there). Sal’s cousin had gone to Bellarmine and his mother really wanted him to attend as well, though his father was concerned they

might talk him into becoming a priest. While Sal was at Bellarmine, his father became Bellarmine’s first fundraising volunteer! He organized the first golden bell auction with Bing Crosby’s brother and orchestra. Sal graduated from Bellarmine, moving on to Santa Clara University just as Laura started at Notre Dame.

Laura worked as a nurse to help put Sal through law school and together raised three daughters and two sons in Saratoga. They have spent nearly all of their 57 years together in that same home.

sellout crowd, excited to hear from two notable leaders in our community, greeted this year’s Women of Impact honorees. Developed to spotlight women who have made significant contributions to society, the Women of Impact Luncheon also generates awareness of the need to provide opportunities for young women outside the scope of traditional education.

This year’s alumna honoree, Rose Pierro Simmons graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1963. She went on to earn a degree in social work from San Jose State University. In 1972, Rose began working for the American Cancer Society, where she would establish ground-breaking programs and eventually retire as chief operating officer of the California division. She also worked for the Stanford University Medical Center during her long and illustrious 41-year career. “Follow your heart. Follow your passion. Over the last several years, honorees have represented a variety of industries including high tech, nonprofit, education and the arts.

Notre Dame’s community honoree, Judge LaDoris Hazzard Cordell, who graduated from Stanford Law School in 1974, was the first lawyer to open a law practice in East Palo Alto. Judge Cordell was appointed to the Municipal Court of Santa Clara County in 1982 and in 1988 became the first African American woman to sit on the Superior Court

Endowment Giving

E

ndowment gifts are permanent funds in which the principal is held in perpetuity. The investment income provides a long-term source of financial support not just for this generation but for generations to come. Funds are invested prudently to help sustain current and future needs. Gifts to endowment and endowed scholarships help Notre Dame keep tuition stable and provide support for tutition assistance to ensure that we are able to maintain diversity and serve the needs of qualfied students who may not have the financial means to afford tuition.

ThirtyOne Annual Giving Women

T

hirtyOne Women is a group passionate about the value of Catholic education, and committed to making it available to girls from Our Lady of Grace Nativity School.

Each group of ThirtyOne Women consists of 30 women committing for four years to cover the cost of one girl from Our Lady of Grace to attend Notre Dame High School. This will cover tuition, books, and fees for all four years. One girl from OLG will, through her experience at NDSJ, become the thirty first woman in the circle.

M

ichelle Ramirez ’16, along with Yasmen Lopez ’16 (pictured above), became the first graduates of the ThirtyOne Women scholarship program in June. “You might not always see how deeply a life is being transformed, but believe me when I say that having the opportunity to be at Notre Dame is a huge blessing,” said Michelle in thanking her circle of women. “Coming from a community where many teenagers our age are pregnant, in gangs, or drop out of high school, being in an environment where everyone is hungry for learning and pushing each other to be better is simply amazing. I definitely have been academically challenged and pushed while at Notre Dame. Being here has inspired me to grow spiritually and academically in ways unexplainable. I have learned how to be a better student, and how to be a young lady that can stand her ground, speak her mind, and make an impact in our society.” Michelle is currently attending Scripps College and hopes to be a lawyer and eventually be part of another giving circle of ThirtyOne Women. Yasmen is attending San Jose State University and majoring in computer engineering.

For questions or to notify us of your intent to match your gift, please contact the development office at donate@ndsj.org

Mission Statement Notre Dame High School, in the heart of downtown San Jose since 1851, provides young women an exemplary Catholic and college preparatory education. We do so in the spiritual legacy of Saint Julie Billiart, the foundress of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, embracing the gift of God’s goodness to support the personal journey of each student. This journey occurs in a uniquely compassionate community with meaningful and integrated learning programs that foster intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, reflection, social awareness and responsibility, and the discovery of each young woman’s voice and leadership capabilities. We bring to life the values stated in The Hallmarks of a Notre Dame de Namur Learning Community. - We proclaim by our lives even more than by our words that God is good. - We honor the dignity and sacredness of each person. - We educate for and act on behalf of justice and peace in the world. - We commit ourselves to community service. - We embrace the gift of diversity. - We create community among those with whom we work and with those we serve. - We develop holistic learning communities which educate for life. We honor Saint Julie’s wisdom to “Teach them what they need to know for life.”
