Letter from the Principal Dear Notre Dame Community, The 2014-2015 school and fiscal year was a very productive one for Notre Dame. We put to rest the 2010-2015 strategic plan and drafted new and robust initiatives for the next five years. We began to make the campus master plan a reality, working to obtain a zoning permit with the city of San Jose and taking the beginning steps toward a capital campaign to launch the first phase. The 2010-2015 strategic plan’s focus was on tactical initiatives that would strengthen the school’s governance and financial position, while developing distinctive program. Mission accomplished! Over those five years, Notre Dame’s Board of Directors grew in number and influence and have made provisions for a board-designated endowment of seven million dollars. That endowment, along with a perpetual endowment of $1,850,000 assure the ongoing stability of the school. The strong organizational business operations of the school, as affirmed in the annual audit, have allowed for substantial program growth that includes an integrated theme of education for justice and leadership that weaves mission into every class and activity; the launch of a technology, engineering and design department with requisite courses; growth in STEAM curriculum and growth in the visual and performing arts program. With capacity enrollment year-over-year, all is working well and we are ready for the next steps. The building of the 2015-2020 strategic plan took on a completely different and fresh focus. With strong operations and distinctive mission-aligned programs in place, the steering committee and various task forces were free to brainstorm about where Notre Dame San Jose would set its sights for the next five years. These new initiatives are both exciting and challenging for us and we have already begun to chart their course and impact. • • • • •

As we move forward with these initiatives, we are dedicated to advancing the campus master plan to meet program facility needs for the school today and for the future. We look forward to sharing more in 2016 about the campaign to achieve those goals. Our progress is clear and impressive. We have you, our supporters, to thank. Thank you. Thank you for your generosity and loyalty and for helping us shape a strong future for Notre Dame San Jose. Ora et labora!

Notre Dame Vignettes — Lorraine Cristina ’35 Sunseri by Brigitte Heiser, Director of Communications Born in Willow Glen into a large Italian family, Lorraine Cristina and her three siblings grew up on Minnesota Avenue near Lincoln Avenue. “San Jose was such a nice town,” shared Lorraine. “It had a library and beautiful stores including O’Briens Candy Shop.” The family owned apple orchards as well as a large ranch in Hollister. “Life was centered around our extended family and working on the ranch and in the local canneries. My aunts, uncles and cousins picked fruit in the orchards and then prepared it for canning, like many other people of that time. Santa Clara Valley was known as The Valley of Heart’s Delight and fresh and dried fruit were the primary business.” While Lorraine was still a young girl, her family moved to Third Street and Reed in downtown San Jose across the street from Notre Dame and close to St. Mary’s Catholic Parish where she attended elementary school. In 1931 when Lorraine began her Notre Dame journey along with her 34 classmates, the United States was mired in the depths of the Great Depression with an estimated six million people out of work. The country had already experienced “Black Thursday” and “Black Tuesday.” The selling of nearly 29 million shares of stock over the course of those two days left investors with worthless shares and, in many cases, completely destitute. As the third wave of banking panics began in the fall of 1931, hundreds of banks were forced to close their doors. Although the family didn’t have much money, her father was able to trade produce for tuition payments. With subjects that included chemistry, biology and Latin, school was challenging and students had a lot of homework. They also enjoyed music classes and physical education classes – playing volleyball and softball. “I was a catcher. We had to play softball with our aprons on so that we wouldn’t get our uniforms dirty,” laughs Lorraine. Family and social life revolved around parish and school functions and dances. “I met my future husband, Joe Sunseri, at a church dance when I was just 16,” explains Lorraine. “After the dance, Joe went home and told his mother that he had met the girl he would marry. Young people in our circle didn’t date as teenagers do now. We would go places with friends and family members.” While Lorraine attended Notre Dame, the depression continued with unemployment rising to a high of 25% in 1933. California also saw significant increases in population as hundreds of thousands of residents of the Dust Bowl salvaged what they could and headed for the promised land where they hoped to find good jobs and a better life. What they found were few jobs and wages that had dropped by over 30%. Tensions rose even higher in San Jose as Hart’s Department Store heir Brook Hart was kidnapped and killed and an angry mob lynched the pair of kidnappers at midnight in San Jose’s St. James Park. Today’s Notre Dame students can often be found downtown on Friday afternoons, enjoying the variety of food and entertainment available just a few steps away. In the early 1930’s however, students went home right after school. “We didn’t go downtown. If you had your socks rolled down or were smoking or caught downtown you would be expelled.”
2
After high school, Lorraine attended San Jose State College and graduated as a dental assistant. Lorraine and Joe were married in 1939 at St. Mary’s Church. After the ceremony they visited the nuns at Notre Dame in their wedding finery, as was the custom. “Joe also went to San Jose State for a while, but wanted to start his own business and so he opened a grocery store. I was a stay-at-home mom and had two children, Patricia and David. World War II broke out and Joe was drafted in 1944. He was eventually stationed in Southern California as a supply sergeant a year before the end of the war.” As Joe continued with various business ventures including a partnership in San Jose Speedway and ownership of the San Jose Bees baseball club, Lorraine had a third child, Susan. Lorraine was very active at St. Patrick’s Church and Notre Dame High School for many years as her children grew. Lorraine’s daughter Pat Sunseri ‘58 Schott (right) followed in her mother’s footsteps, attending Notre Dame High School and then San Jose State University. Lorraine’s son David and daughter Susan graduated from Santa Clara University. Following Joe’s retirement, the couple continued their philanthropic work with organizations including the Civic Club, the Hibernians, Optimists International, Elks Club, Our Lady of Fatima Villa, Catholic Social Services and many others. They also traveled extensively. In 2009, Joe passed away at the age of 93. Lorraine, who turned 98 this year, enjoys her grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down!

Creating Downtown San Jose’s First Student Mural by Brigitte Heiser, Director of Communications Having Notre Dame student artwork displayed in the San Jose downtown area is not new for us. The Downtown Doors program, established in 2003, has featured the artistic creations of our students 29 times. In fact, this year, three new pieces of ND art were chosen for the program. Students have also had their artwork featured in exhibits and at special events. In 2015, however, Notre Dame’s contribution to art in the SoFA (South of First Arts) district reached new heights - literally! The San Jose Downtown Association (SJDA), a non-profit membership-based Rebecca Ternas ky organization founded in 1986, represents business and property owners and works to enhance downtown’s vitality and livability. In late 2014 they first contacted Rebecca Ternasky, chair for the Visual & Performing Arts Department and art teacher, about displaying student artwork on a large scale. Our unique urban location and the level of artistic talent in our student body made us a natural choice for this pilot program, an 8’ x 48’ mural. Unlike traditional murals painted on existing buildings or other structures, this mural would be painted onto wood panels to be installed on a freestanding frame structure on the corner of 2nd Street and San Carlos, right in the heart of the SoFA District. The finished mural will be a corner-style landscape design on a special frame that will house the artwork ten feet in the air! After being invited by the SJDA to produce this mural, Rebecca offered the opportunity to design the mural artwork to 16 ND artists. Among this group were students she had taught in Introduction to Visual Art and Advanced Pen and Paint — girls that had a strong art portfolio and would potentially go on to study the visual arts in college and beyond. From that small group, Jamie Friedman ’17 offered a great design that would fit nicely in the SoFA District. She worked hard to finish the artwork digitally during the months of January and February, 2015. While creating the original artwork required the creativity and focus of one student artist, translating that digital art into a 48’ mural required the time and talent of a great many more. In March, a core group of 30 students were chosen to accomplish this monumental task. The downtown association delivered the wood panels in April. After the panels had been primed, the students, under Rebecca’s direction, spent two weeks tracing the artwork image onto the panels. As school broke for summer and most students shifted into vacation mode, our core group of 30 students rotated through morning and evening shifts,
4
four days a week. After being painted, the panels were sealed to protect them against the elements they would face in their new home. The downtown association held an official ‘grand reveal’ of the mural during the SoFA First Friday event on August 7th, 2015. Friends, family, and members of the Notre Dame community as well as representatives from both the SJDA and the San Jose City Council celebrated the completion of this massive piece of art. The mural is expected to be in place by the end of November. The mural project is just one of the unique and creative projects Rebecca does with her students. “My favorite part of the mural project was getting all the artists organized and working together to achieve the desired end-product” shared Rebecca. “I was blown away by how fluidly everyone worked together — like a well-oiled machine! Everything came together nicely in the end.” When asked why she became a teacher, Rebecca said “I went into teaching because I discovered in my early college days how much I enjoyed working with other people to help them succeed in school and in the workplace. I’ve always enjoyed making art, and I realized at an early age that the more I practiced, the better my art became. That “aha” moment that comes after you’ve spent time and energy practicing something always feels so good and I want to help other people feel it for themselves. I like to see people push themselves to try something new, explore multiple options with their work, and finally feel a sense of accomplishment and find satisfaction in what they do. Life is hard, I believe everyone deserves to find one thing that makes it all worth-while.” In addition to sharing her talent and love of art with her students, Rebecca also helps them learn balance. “One big thing I have learned over the last four years is that life keeps you busy! I will never find the time to create, instead, I have to make it. As busy as I am, I know that if I really want to I can make it happen. It may mean saying ‘no’ to other things, which can be difficult to do, but it is necessary if I want to maintain a balance of work and play and self care. It’s all a matter of prioritizing and allowing myself the time and space to become invested in the creative process.”

L’Esprit de Françoise Award Recipient by Marylou Schoone, Senior Development Associate A tapestry woven of public service, quiet determination, family, faith and benevolence has defined the legacy of Suzanne Donovan ’53 and Dominic Cortese. For their loyal support and generosity to Notre Dame through the years, we honor Suzanne and Dom with this year’s L’Esprit de Françoise award. This philanthropic spirit began in both Suzanne and Dom when they were young. Suzanne says, “Once we saw the possibility that discretionary money was in our future, we took that as a responsibility and knew that we would share it. Early on we designated a percentage of our earnings for charitable giving. We were always on the same page with that.” Born in Michigan, Suzanne’s family moved to San Jose where she attended St. Clare School. Though her mom was a single mom by then, there was never a question that she would go to Notre Dame. To offset tuition, the Sisters of Notre Dame let Suzanne work in the cafeteria. Notre Dame “was kind of austere as there were rules that just had to be followed, but academically it was great. From the beginning I had a vision of myself as a Notre Dame girl. I made lasting friendships there.” Suzanne went on to San Jose Junior College where she earned certification as a dental assistant. Dom spent his early years in downtown San Jose before the family moved to the “country,” a ranch just below San Jose Country Club. His father considered himself a farmer, with apricot and prune orchards, but became an astute real estate man. In time the family owned many orchards. Two weeks into his freshman year at a public school, Dom’s mom took him to Bellarmine and said to one of the priests, “I want my
6
son to go here.” He began that day and Dom says, “It was a fluke, and certainly a Godsend.” He would subsequently graduate from Santa Clara in 1954 with majors in political science and economics. Suzanne and Dom met after her graduation from ND when a friend set them up on a blind date on New Year’s eve. After dating for two years, they married at Fort Ord where Dom was stationed. A year and a child later (Dave) they moved back to San Jose and into a small house on Dom’s parents’ ranch. In the next few years four more children were born: Rosanne, Mary Elizabeth, Tom and Jim. During this time they built a home, which remained the family home for 40 years, across from Dom’s parents’ ranch. The family home would eventually become the Mission House at St. Francis of Assisi, thanks to their generosity. As Dom and Suzanne were raising their children, their East San Jose neighborhood came to know the family and encouraged Dom to run for the board of supervisors. In 1968, on the last day to file to run for office, Suzanne was out soliciting petition signatures from parents in car pool lines at Most Holy Trinity where their children went to school. At five minutes before 5pm, Dom filed his papers and declared his candidacy for District 2. After being elected – the youngest member to date – Dom served on the board of supervisors for 12 years and then on the state legislature for 16 years. Suzanne was always right by Dom’s side “furthering the cause.” The Cortese legacy continues today with oldest son Dave currently serving as the District 3 representative on the San Jose Board of Supervisors after having served as a councilman and vice mayor for the city of San Jose.
Rosanne, Lauren and Suzanne
Adding to the Cortese legacy, and strengthening its fabric, are three generations of Notre Dame women: Suzanne, Rosanne Cortese ’76 Compitello, and Lauren Compitello ’16. When Rosanne followed her mother in choosing Notre Dame, Notre Dame was “completely different,” Suzanne says. “It was much more relaxed, with more time for students to talk together and more activities, which made it more appealing to the students.” Rosanne’s daughter, current student Lauren Compitello ’16, says, “My mom and I often talk about the similarities and differences between the activities then and now. But the stories of the friendships formed while my mom and grandma were at Notre Dame definitely had an influence on my decision to choose ND.” Granddaughter Angela Cortese ’14, Dave’s daughter, is also an NDSJ alumna. The lifelong networks of Notre Dame alumnae are alive and well in the Cortese family legacy. “Notre Dame today is elite academically and develops girls into young women who excel in many areas,” shares Suzanne. “It is highly competitive, and we are very impressed with the teachers.” Dom reflects, “There is a great need to raise the awareness of the contributions of women, and Notre Dame is on the cutting edge of that. Women must continue to be recognized locally, nationally and globally. This school has a keen opportunity to participate in that.” With a slight pause and smile, Dom adds, “I got most of my ideas from Suzanne, but this is the first time I’ve admitted it!” These years are quieter ones, Suzanne says, and taking care of one another is a big part of that. With their family close by, they are able to spend a lot of time with their nine grandchildren. With deep appreciation and gratitude, Notre Dame says thank you, Suzanne and Dom. Suzanne, you still are “a Notre Dame girl!”
Notre Dame’s Esprit de FranÇoise award is named for Françoise Blin de Bourdon who, with St. Julie Billiart, founded the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. They were an unlikely pair. Julie Billiart’s family was considered peasant stock, belonging to the artisan and small business class. FranÇoise, a member of the aristocracy, was presented at the court of Louis XVI. When they met, they had little in common but would become lifelong friends. FranÇoise loved Julie for her view of things spiritual, her unwavering faith, her deep and invincible confidence, and her intense and active love of God. Julie loved FranÇoise for her innate nobility, her great capacity for self-sacrifice, her sweet serenity of spirit and her wholehearted desire to please God. Their friendship lasted throughout their lives, with FranÇoise lending her support to Julie’s vision. In her honor, we recognize those who have supported the mission of Notre Dame High School. Studying Education in Kolkata, India by Anupriya Nag ’16 For a Notre Dame student, going to school means learning in an all-girls environment about a wide array of academic subjects through a social justice lens. Appreciating this Notre Dame education and wanting to know more about the learning experiences of other girls around the world, Shanti Gurbuxani embarked on a two week project in Kolkata, India. This project was made possible through the support of the Mary Beth Riley Award for International Study or Service. A scholarship fund, the award helps students expand their horizons and use the knowledge and passions developed at ND to create a positive impact on a global scale. With this in mind, Shanti turned in the proposal for her service project, packed her bags, and set out to be a woman of impact as she undertook this new learning experience. She was inspired by the stories her dad often told her about his childhood in Kolkata, and the need for infrastructure in such a bustling city. Once arrived in Kolkata, Shanti worked with an organization called Loreto House to carry out her project. Because Loreto House runs a grade school and college that are both all-girls learning institutions, Shanti was able to find a similar learning environment to that of Notre Dame in which to conduct her
8
research. To collect data for her project, she interviewed nine high school students and nine college students. She asked them about the personal, political, and economic factors that affected their education. To ensure the diversity of the students that were represented in her research, Shanti created demographic surveys that were sent out beforehand. Through this method, she was able to hear the stories and opinions of girls from varying faith and cultural traditions, as well as those from varying socioeconomic standings. One of her main goals was to conduct a preliminary study on the factors that influence women’s higher education in Kolkata and research the correlation between the backgrounds in the demographic surveys and the opinions expressed in the video. The results of the interviews surprised Shanti. She stated, “At one point, Kolkata was known as the education capital in India, and even now it has some of the best Indian universities. Yet, I learned that the biggest factors inhibiting young girls’ higher education in India are money, familial values, and opportunity.” Many of the interviewed students told Shanti that non-governmental organizations often open more schools than the state government of West Bengal does. In addition systems of corruption are often evident in the top universities, as parents with money often are able to bribe their children’s
admission to the school. The students also mentioned that they didn’t have a lot of job experience because it was uncommon and difficult for a woman under twenty one to work, even part-time. “I especially remember the story of one married college girl,” Shanti recalled. “She said that her husband allowed her to finish college because she scored the highest on a law exam her freshman year. She studied and was able to not only focus on her own education, but also work to tutor her neighbors.” The girls explained that laws protecting education for women are in place, yet they are not enforced properly and, therefore, are often futile. In addition, family pressures and other such circumstances, whether economic or cultural, force young women to either get married or start working at a young age. The state of a young girl’s education is often dictated by how much her family values it, and the lengths they would go to help her achieve success in college. Shanti shared, “Through this experience, I got to meet amazing and motivated girls who are working for a brighter future, tutor younger girls in classes like environmental science and biology, and visit local villages to give clean bottled water to the families. I think that the Indian view on girls’ higher education is changing, and girls are now usually granted permission to study by their parents. I think the biggest issue is urging government involvement to open up better schools, and making education in Kolkata a priority. I learned very important lessons from Kolkata, and I want to come back in the near future to help open up new schools and work with an organization called Swayam to give high school or college girls more opportunities for internships before they pick their majors or jobs. This is because I noticed that a lot of girls I interviewed had some idea of what they wanted to do, but they never had any experience pursuing these interests outside of school. I think more internship opportunities, even possible internships abroad could benefit these girls a lot. They already have the determination to go far and improve the infrastructure of Kolkata.”

Spiritual Leadership for the 21st Century by Kathleen Quiazon, Director of Mission & Ministry “Ah, qu’il est bon le bon Dieu! (Oh, how good is the good God), St. Julie’s joyful commitment to the goodness of God models an inclusive gospel lens through which to view the realities of the world. It is this spiritual legacy that lies at the heart of Notre Dame’s educational mission and inspires us to become a center for dialogue, discernment and diversity in the universal Catholic experience, one of the five initiatives in our new strategic plan. One component of this goal is to continue to build opportunities for spiritual growth and dialogue for both our students and their parents, embracing of their family faith traditions. Notre Dame’s Freshman Family Liturgy introduces our freshmen and their families to our Catholic experience of liturgy, providing catechesis for people of all faiths with the goal of building familiarity, inclusion and shared faith practice for the community. Key to this “teaching” mass is the use of student commentators who explain each step in the liturgy in Catholic and multi-faith terms. One of the commentators this year was Karissa Peinado ‘16, who has been part of Notre Dame’s Peer Ministry Leadership Team for two years. “Although I was raised Catholic and considered myself Catholic when I came to Notre Dame, I didn’t believe strongly. After taking the religious studies classes and
10
spending time learning about different belief systems, my faith actually became stronger.” Karissa’s spiritual journey included the sacrament of Confirmation as well as two immersion trips, one to New Orleans with Notre Dame and the other to Tijuana, Mexico with St. Julie Billiart Parish. “The people in these communities have such strong faith. I wanted to be part of bringing that back to ND and helping others find something to believe in,” shares Karissa. In addition to helping her Notre Dame sisters strengthen their faith, Karissa and Camille Miller ‘16 are working to establish an organization to provide school supplies and uniforms to students in Mexico as part of their Senior Service Learning Project (SSLP). “We left the community with some supplies when we were there and returned in October to bring clothes and additional supplies.” In recognition of Karissa’s work at Notre Dame and in the community, the Diocese of San Jose recently presented her with the Saint Francis of Assisi award. The award, part of their first Saints in the City program, honors the young saints who possess a spirit of apostolic outreach. They witness with the joy of the gospel and evangelize their community fearlessly. Karissa will be graduating from Notre Dame in the spring and moving on to study animal science at one of the universities in California. We have no doubt she will be sharing her faith and evangelical spirit wherever she chooses to go.
Celebrating a Lifetime - Margaret & Harriet Dickerman by Brigitte Heiser, Director of Communications Margaret and Harriet Dickerman were born in Oakland on June 14, 1924. That same year, IBM was founded, New York City held the first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the first modern Olympic Games were held in France. It was a year for firsts and, for Harriet and Margaret, the beginning of a lifetime of treasured memories. The twin girls enjoyed an idyllic childhood, growing up on a 76-acre prune and apricot ranch in the Milpitas area during a time when the “Valley of Hearts Delight” was filled with orchards. Their father, who served as manager of the ranch originally purchased by their grandfather, drove the girls to and from school daily. St. Patrick School in downtown San Jose, which first opened its doors in 1925, became their home-away-fromhome through their elementary years. In 1938, Margaret and Harriet became part of Notre Dame San Jose’s 74th graduating class, the Class of 1942. “The nuns loved our dad,” laughed Harriet. “When he picked us up after school, they would run out to the car and ask if they could have a ride to wherever they needed to go.” Music was always an important part of the girls’ lives and, from a young age, they sang in school and church choirs. At Notre Dame, under the guidance of Sister Angela Bernadine, Margaret and Harriet sang duets and participated in other choral performances. “When we were at Notre Dame, the junior class organized a tea for their senior class sisters. It was always such a nice event.” The sisterhood that Margaret and Harriet enjoyed is still celebrated at Notre Dame through events such as the senior brunch organized by the sophomore class. When the twins graduated from Notre Dame in June of 1942, the world was deeply embroiled
in WWII. Following graduation from Notre Dame, both Margaret and Harriet went on to UCSF to study nursing. Still loving music, they both also studied advanced voice. As a registered nurse, Margaret worked with newborn babies. Harriet put aside her career until her youngest child entered grade school then went to work in hematology and oncology. In her care were some of the first AIDS patients at UCSF.
Margaret
After a beautiful ceremony in San Francisco’s historic St. Anne’s Church, Margaret married Robert and became Mrs. Margaret Dickerman McSweeney in Harriet August of 1947. A month later, on September 14, and in the same church, Harriet married Jack and became Mrs. Harriet Dickerman Heard. In a beautiful example of true sisterhood, the girls wore the same wedding dress and each served as maid of honor for the other. What followed were years of work and family, six children for Harriet and three boys for Margaret, and many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. In June of 2014, the family came together to celebrate an important milestone for Margaret and Harriet, their 90th birthday. Surrounded by their loving family, they enjoyed a wonderful garden party. Although Margaret and Harriet live miles apart, in Menlo Park and Sonoma Valley, they talk regularly and spend as much time as they can enjoying each other’s company. We wish them continued health and the love of family! 11
ND Reads - STEAM in Action by Jan Tupaj-Farthing, Vice Principal of Academic Affairs
This year’s ND Reads selection, The Odyssey of KP2 - An Orphan Seal and a Marine Biologist’s Fight to Save a Species, by Terrie M. Williams, a wildlife biologist and director of the Marine Mammal Physiology Program at UC Santa Cruz ushered the program into ‘uncharted waters’ with a look at animal physiology, environmental concerns and research. Through this honest and heartfelt story, Dr. Williams shares her personal story and relationship with Kauai Pup 2 (KP2), a friendly seal born on a beach and abandoned by his mother. Theirs is a story of survival, joy, heartbreak, politics and protests that has captured the minds and hearts of our learning community. As with all of our ND Reads selections, the story of KP2 is being integrated across the curriculum in a variety of ways. For the sciences, it is a powerful launching point to discussions about evolution, animal physiology, habitat loss and genetic drift. Students in Advanced Placement Environmental Science are connecting the book to the study of oceanic circulation and climate change while, in Chemistry, they discuss ocean acidification and the metabolic requirements of both humans and sea creatures. In physics, the focus changes slightly to oil spills and the cleanup of those spills. KP2s home and story were even integrated into the arts, with ceramics students creating a display of plumeria blossoms, the Hawaiian Islands and powerful quotes lifted from the pages of the book. In October, Dr. Williams, who is considered one of the top 50 female research scientists in the country, joined us for the
annual ND Reads author visit. In addition to the assembly for all students, she spoke with the greater community. Through her presentation, the story of KP2 came alive for students as did her passion for the animals she studies. In the evening, Dr. Williams shared her latest research into the physiology of lions. In travelling to Africa to study the large cats, she was able to experience what had first prompted her to enter the field of animal research. Her ongoing study of lion behavior will ultimately help humans and animals discover better ways to co-exist. As a follow-up to Dr. Williams’ visit, Beau Richter joined us as part of our STEAM Speaker Series. Beau serves as the head trainer for the Marine Mammal Physiology Program and spent two years working with KP2. In addition to more details of the program’s research and findings, he shared photos and personal stories, which helped students connect even more deeply with the little orphan monk seal, KP2.

The STEAM Speaker Series will continue this year with three additional events: • December 2, Melanie Duffin (Technology, Engineering & Design Department chairperson and teacher) will lead the entire school in an hour of code. • February 3, Dr. Ruma Kumar, assistant physician in chief and regional medical director of Supportive Care Services Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center, will speak about her career in medicine. • Our final speaker will be Rachel Bergren the director of education at the Marine Mammal Center. She will speak about marine mammal care and conservation. We were honored and excited to have Dr Williams share her personal story with our Notre Dame community. In a note to the school, she graciously thanked us as well: I want to give a BIG Hawaiian Mahalo to all of you. I am still overwhelmed with the visit and welcome last week. I don’t believe that it was Antarctic expedition jet lag. Rather it was the biggest, warmest, smartest welcome I’ve ever received and I am truly humbled. All of the students were just so positive and energetic about life. That is a rarity these days, and it gives me great hope for the next generation of scientists coming my way. Tell the students PLEASE take my job. I’ve been waiting for them to come and help save this earth. After my visit last week, I truly believe that each one will change the world for the better. It makes me smile to know that.
Each year, since 2007, Notre Dame High School selects a book that highlights an issue connected to the school’s mission and programs. ThirtyOne Women ThirtyOne Women is a group passionate about the value of Catholic education, and committed to making it available to girls from very low-income families. Each group of ThirtyOne women consists of 30 women committing for four years to cover the cost of one girl from Our Lady of Grace Middle School to attend Notre Dame High School. This will cover tuition, books, and fees for all four years. One girl from OLG will, through her experience at NDSJ, become the ThirtyFirst woman. Matching Gifts
For More Information
Donations to the Annual Fund campaign make up the difference between tuition income and operational costs. Annual giving supports a balanced operating budget while also making regular investments in overall facilities, academic programs, technology and co-curricular programs. Many companies offer matching gift programs. Check with your human resources office to see if your company participates or contact Notre Dame’s Development Office for assistance.
Tribute Gifts
Notre Dame hosts four major fundraising event annually: a golf tournament, the Women of Impact luncheon, a crab fest and a spring event. Underwriting sponsorships and attendance at these events raises funds for tuition assistance and the operating budget. For more information or if you have questions, contact Elizabeth Fox, executive director of advancement, at bfox@ndsj.org Gifts to Notre Dame High School are tax deductible as allowed by law.
Remember a family member or friend by making a gift to Notre Dame in her or his honor or memory.

Mission Statement
Notre Dame High School, in the heart of downtown San Jose since 1851, provides young women an exemplary Catholic and college preparatory education. We do so in the spiritual legacy of Saint Julie Billiart, the foundress of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, embracing the gift of God’s goodness to support the personal journey of each student. This journey occurs in a uniquely compassionate community with meaningful and integrated learning programs that foster intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, reflection, social awareness and responsibility, and the discovery of each young woman’s voice and leadership capabilities. We bring to life the values stated in The Hallmarks of a Notre Dame de Namur Learning Community. u We proclaim by our lives even more than by our words that God is good. u We honor the dignity and sacredness of each person. u We educate for and act on behalf of justice and peace in the world. u We commit ourselves to community service. u We embrace the gift of diversity. u We create community among those with whom we work and with those we serve. u We develop holistic learning communities which educate for life. We honor Saint Julie’s wisdom to “Teach them what they need to know for life.”
