Come and wander around a beautiful and intriguing sunken garden with exceptional richness and arrangements of colour and textures with a very wide and unusual variety of plants and grasses attracting butterflies and bees and with hummingbird hawkmoths to be seen in late summer. This vibrant garden changes from year to year to reflect the owners’ passion for plants. Tiers of dry stone wall terraces hold an original and fascinating plant collection, with richly layered planting in what was an old stone quarry, which is a surprising find at the top of a hill above the seaside town of Swanage.

GOLF TIP THE SECRETS IN THE
SHOULDER TURN For anyone who slices the ball or struggles with power and distance the shoulder turn can hold the secret to greater consistency and the shot shape you’ve been dreaming of. First we need to understand the problem. Golf is a game played on a tilted angle, our body is bent from the waist somewhere from 35 to 45 degrees and sometimes beyond. The angle that we set at the address position is typically the angle that is maintained throughout the golf swing until somewhere near the finish. To achieve this the shoulders turn on an angle with the leading shoulder moving downwards on the way back then the opposite movement on the way down with the rear shoulder moving downwards whilst the body weight moves towards the target. The issue I see and fix all the time is the shoulders turning too level during the swing as the player tries to hit the ball. As the shoulders turn too level the golfers hips and weight tend to move backwards creating Tops and thins along with the dreaded slice. So what’s the solution? The lead shoulder needs to turn downwards and not across during the back swing. It will feel as though your lower at the top of the swing and almost like the lead shoulder is point down at the trailing foot! You will not only start drawing the ball if you do this correctly but hit it higher and further! Start with shorter swings if you need to in order to achieve the correct motion. Good luck with your practice and pop up to see me at The Dorset Golf & Country Club Stephen Packer PGA Professiaonal & Tour Coach The Dorset Golf & Country Club www.stephenpackergolf.com 20
THE DORSET GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB The Dorset Golf & Country Club has recently been acknowledged as at Top 150 Course in England having never been before! The Lakeland, Parkland and Woodland Courses were designed by Martin Hawtree, who received international acclaim for his excellent work in redesigning The British Open courses and more recently the design of Troon Golf in Scotland for Donald Trump. Martin Hawtree is certainly rated as one of the best designers in the world today, so in design terms the courses here at The Dorset have a pedigree that is undeniable. Hawtree is renowned for his tricky clover shaped bunkers and large and deceptive undulating greens which is what you will find at The Dorset. Hawtree purposely designed the greens to have run ins and run offs so that the summer requires a different tact than the winter, truly a Unique test whatever the time
of year. Having being built to the highest specification the course never closes surviving the wettest winter weather. The whole course is surrounded by the Purbeck Hills and Rolling Heath land with an abundance of wildlife! With four sets of tees the course can be set up to play at multiple levels of difficulty. Having hosted many championship events including the South West PGA Championship, The Mastercard Tour Event, County Championships, Bentley Regional Qualifier, National Army Infantry Championships and the West of England Seniors Championship. Justin Rose even held the course record here briefly shooting a Gross 69 from the back tees which he shot playing in a Mastercard Tour event. Definitely worth playing at some point every year in your golfing diary!

TUDOR ADVENTURE
AT CORFE CASTLE THIS SUMMER What’s the link between Corfe Castle and Sir Francis Drake? The answer is an Elizabethan courtier who danced his way into the heart of a Queen. Tudor Adventure at Corfe Castle from 9 July-29 August is inspired by the life of Sir Christopher Hatton, who became the castle’s first private owner in 1572. Hatton’s good looks and prowess as a dancer made him a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I and her patronage helped him grow rich and powerful. His money helped finance Drake’s voyages to the New World and Drake renamed his ship The Golden Hind after the emblem on Hatton’s coat of arms. Meet characters from Elizabethan England and hear their stories in Tudor Adventure. Experience adventure on the high seas, Elizabethan music and dance, the tavern, games and pastimes and even 16th century fast food. Adventure on the high seas Join Sir Francis Drake and his crew on a three year journey into the unknown. When Drake returned to England in 1580 after raiding the Spanish overseas empire he became the first captain to have sailed right around the world. He brought with him tales of adventure and a fortune in looted treasure. Elizabethan music and dance Music was an important part of Tudor life and it was dance that first brought Hatton to the notice of Queen Elizabeth I. Try your hand playing musical instruments from the period
and learn how to dance like an Elizabethan. The Brewhouse and tavern Step back in time with the sights, sounds and smells of renaissance brewing. We recreate the ale drunk by rich and poor alike at a time when sanitation was non-existent and water was often filthy. Tudor games and pastimes Bowls and board games were both popular in Elizabethan times – Drake is said to have played bowls while awaiting the Spanish Armada. Find out what toys were like in the 16th century and learn how playwrights like Shakespeare began the age of mass entertainment. Cooking and fast food Away from the sumptuous banquets of the court, what did ordinary people in villages like Corfe Castle eat? Our itinerant cooks serve up a variety of Tudor fast food – you may be surprised by what was available. Family trail A murderous plot is afoot and it’s your job to uncover it. Follow the trail to discover the testimony of witnesses, gather the evidence and tick off potential murder weapons. When you’ve completed the quest you’ll have the chance to vote for your choice of guilty party. Tudor Adventure is a free event but normal admission charges apply – free to members of the National Trust. 23
ATTENBOROUGH
‘SOGGY SUMMER RISK TO BUTTERFLIES’ Sir David Attenborough is warning that this year’s slow spring and soggy summer could pose a risk to the common butterflies found in and around Dorset. Urging the public to take part in this year’s Big Butterfly Count, Sir David said that people’s sightings were vital in order to chart the effects of the poor weather conditions. Cold, wet weather can have a disastrous effect on butterfly numbers as the conditions reduce their opportunity to feed and mate. This year butterflies have endured a slow start to spring with cold conditions experienced during March and snow falling widely well into April, which was colder than average. Despite a few warm weeks in May, June was a washout for many parts of the UK with sightings of butterflies down on previous years. This year’s soggy weather follows on from last year’s colder than average summer, meaning a sustained spell of warm and dry weather is much needed to help our common butterfly species mount a recovery. The Big Butterfly Count is the world’s largest butterfly survey, which encourages people to spot and record 18 species of common butterflies and two day-flying moths during
24
three weeks of high summer. It can be done in any green space and at any time, but people are also being invited to take part in the Count at a free public butterfly event on Sunday 7 August on Portland. This is the final day of the Big Butterfly Count and people will be given guided tours of Tout Quarry from 11am and the Perryfields Butterfly Reserve from 2pm. Butterflies found at the two sites include the Silver-studded Blue, Chalk Hill Blue, Lulworth Skipper and the Grayling, as well as a number of Big Butterfly Count species. More information about this free event can be found by visiting: www.butterfly-conservation.org/PortlandWalks Butterfly Conservation President, Sir David Attenborough said: “Last year’s wet and cold summer made life difficult for many of our butterflies and coupled with this year’s late spring, our Red Admirals, Small Coppers, Green-veined Whites and Speckled Woods really need a boost of warm summer weather to enable them to thrive. “During my lifetime I have seen first-hand how the UK’s once plentiful butterflies have dwindled and diminished, with some species even becoming extinct. This is a gloomy outlook but not one that is set in stone. We must make sure these losses are halted and reversed, but in order to achieve this we first need to find out as much information about our butterflies as possible. “It is vitally important that we gain a clearer picture of how our butterflies are faring. That is why taking part in the Big Butterfly Count is so important – it helps us build a picture of how butterflies are doing in our own neighbourhoods and what help they need from us.”
More than three-quarters of the UK’s butterflies have declined in the last 40 years with some common species, such as the Small Tortoiseshell, suffering significant slumps. The Big Butterfly Count, now in its seventh year, helps Butterfly Conservation find out how our common species are faring and how to best protect them in the future. More than 50,000 people took part last year, counting around 600,000 butterflies. The Big Butterfly Count is sponsored by Waitrose and John Lewis. Tor Harris, Head of Sustainability and Responsible Sourcing at Waitrose, said: “We are delighted to be backing the Big Butterfly Count this year and we hope that people up and down the UK will get involved with the Count, download the app and share their exciting butterfly sightings.” Stephen Cawley, Head of Sustainability and Responsible Sourcing at John Lewis, said: “As part of our education programme, Bringing Skills to Life, we’re excited to be supporting the Big Butterfly Count. We’ve teamed up
with Butterfly Conservation and created a wide range of resources and activities to help children throughout the country learn more about these beautiful creatures.” The Count runs until the 7 August and taking part in the Count is very easy - find a sunny spot and spend 15 minutes counting the butterflies you see and then submit sightings online at www.bigbutterflycount.org or via the free Big Butterfly Count app. Sir David added: “We live busy lives that are increasingly detached from the natural world, so taking 15 minutes out to simply watch wildlife is not only helping butterflies but is also good for our own wellbeing as well as helping wildlife.” Butterfly Conservation is the UK charity based in Dorset dedicated to saving butterflies, moths and our environment. Our research provides advice on how to conserve and restore habitats. We run programmes for more than 100 threatened species and we are involved in conserving hundreds of sites and reserves. www.butterfly-conservation.org 25

Time for a farmyard adventure Farmer Palmer’s Farm Park has Dorset Tourism’s award winning formula for your memorable family day out! The secret is out, and children are shouting about it The “must visit” destination for families who have entertaining the children high on their “to do holiday list! Discover Dorset’s award winning treasure, designed specifically for children eight years and under. A recreational day that still represents great value for money and where your fabulous adventurers can frankly “let their hair down” without older children around to stifle their enjoyment! Your children can easily stay occupied for hours. The Palmer family’s attention to detail is everywhere, delivering an outstanding mix of activities, their “Little Farmers Fun Barn” encourages imaginative play - Here you can become part of the extended farming family. Many attractions claim to be all-weather, and Farmer Palmer’s really is! There is real cow milking, hands-on animal feeding and even a pig racing experience which is very exciting! There are also indoor and outdoor play areas. Meet real cows in their milking demonstration or stroll along the woodland walk. Take a ride or bring a towel for the outdoor sand and water. All the dedicated staff have an excellent attitude. They are friendly, approachable and, as we have found again and again over the years, totally understanding of the needs of parents with little ones. They are kind, keen to offer help, smile and all because they love what they do, and are totally committed to giving 110 per cent to the whole Farmer Palmer’s experience. The attention to “safe fun” is more than reassuring.
The cafe has traditional meals cooked on site and of course they make their own cakes. The attention to detail is obvious in all the little things to make it easy on you - highchairs, baby changing, and microwaves for bottles. If you, as parents, opened a children’s attraction this is what it would be like! Director Sandra Palmer Snellin says: “In a world of technology and screens, we hope little imaginations can explore, curiosity can develop Role-play and creativity are the norm.” Customers say: “It’s not big, it’s not commercial, it is actually run by Farmer Palmer he is a real person.” A great old fashioned day out.” “Frankly it is one of the best value days out in the county!” Open daily from 10am Tel: 01202 622022 or facebook.com/farmerpalmersfarmpark. farmerpalmer.co.uk Tel 01202 022022 Open until Dec 19, 2016 and re-opens 21st January 2017 45
