Welcome to your
Students’ Union Postgraduate Edition
Welcome
to the University of Nottingham Students’ Union. We hope you’re looking forward to the start of term. When you register with the University you’ll automatically become a member of both the Students’ Union and the Postgraduate Students’ Association (PGSA). This booklet will give you an overview of what this means, how you can get involved and what we can do for you. There’s a guide to some of the events taking place over Morgan Stankey the first week of term to help you find your feet and supgofficer@nottingham.ac.uk meet other people, and an introduction to the Graduate 0115 846 8715 (68715 internal) School where you’ll find the support and training you Floor B, Portland Building need to get you through your studies. University Park
As your Postgraduate Officer and Chair of the Nottingham PGSA I’ll be your voice within the Students’ Union, making sure your views are heard and your interests are taken seriously. You’ll also be hearing from me regularly via email and through the PGSA Facebook page: University of Nottingham PGSA. If you get the chance, come to the Newcomers’ Night Out at Pitcher and Piano in the city centre on Monday 20th September from 8pm. It’s FREE and it’s a great opportunity to meet other new postgraduates. Visit the PGSA stand at Freshers’ Fair, an event to find out about SU clubs and societies while grabbing a few freebies, from 10am-4pm, 20th-22nd September in the big tent on Nightingale Field, University Park (despite the name, postgraduates are definitely welcome; it’s not just for freshers). We’ll be more than happy to answer absolutely any questions you might have and to discuss what the Students’ Union and the PGSA can do for you. I look forward to meeting you and if you see me about, please say hi! Morgan Stankey Postgraduate Officer 2010/11

‘Give it a Go’ Taster Sessions
Ever wanted to try a new skill like salsa dancing or learn a bit about wine tasting but think you’re too busy to join a society? The PGSA runs Taster Sessions in partnership with Students’ Union societies so you can try something new without committing too much time. Of course, if you like what you try you can always take it further and join the society afterwards. You never know, it could be the start of a whole new hobby. The first Taster Session of term will be with RamSoc on Sunday 26th September. You can find out more about joining Students’ Union sports clubs and societies on p. 13.
Sport
The PGSA runs several sports teams and there are leagues, events and activities throughout the year just for postgraduates. Whether you’re a seasoned sportsperson or you just want to try something new and get a little exercise there’s ample opportunity to get involved. From PGSA teams that compete in the University’s intra-mural leagues to one-off events like fun runs and climbing sessions, there’ll be something to suit your level (and commitment).
Representation
The PGSA is there to represent you to the Students’ Union, the University and on a national level. As well as Morgan Stankey, your Postgraduate Officer, the PGSA Committee consists of a General Secretary, Treasurer, Welfare Officer and a number of Social Secretaries and Sports Secretaries.
The PGSA needs you!
ElectionsNominations: 9am on 1st Oct - 5pm on 12th Oct Voting: 9am on 20th Oct - 5pm on 22nd Oct We need a new PGSA Committee for 2010/11 so if you’re interested in helping to run events, socials, sports teams, or representing your fellow postgraduates, why not stand for a Committee position? The PGSA is a good place to start if you want to do a little bit more than study whilst you’re at Nottingham … and you can get involved straight away! We organise everything to fit around your academic responsibilities and it arms you with some great CV boosting skills. You can find out more about how to join the PGSA Committee at www.pgsa.org.uk.

Getting Started Accommodation
If you haven’t already got your accommodation organised, don’t worry – there’s still time for you to sort everything out.
University accommodation
All new postgraduate students are guaranteed Universityarranged accommodation for their first year. There are a range of different options to suit your needs and budget. Visit pgstudy.nottingham.ac.uk/university-life/ accommodation.aspx to find out more. Alternatively you can contact the Accommodation Office on 0115 951 3697 or pgaccommodation@nottingham.ac.uk.
Private sector accommodation
If you prefer to arrange your own accommodation, make Unipol (www.unipol.org.uk/nottingham) your first stop. Unipol’s a housing charity that works to improve private-sector student accommodation. All the landlords who advertise their properties through Unipol have to meet a set of standards and if you have any trouble with your accommodation further down the line, Unipol will represent you, so you can house hunt with confidence. Companies like Opal (which sponsors the PGSA) also provide purpose-built student accommodation in Nottingham with added extras like on-site gyms, common rooms, laundrettes and 24 hour staff support.
Welcome Week
Over the first week of term the PGSA and the Graduate School will be running a number of events to help you meet other postgraduates and get settled into life at Nottingham. There’ll be Taster Sessions, Days Out and Nights Out to suit everyone’s tastes. See the timetable on p. 10-11 for details.
Registration
All new, full-time students must register with the University online, via the Portal, at my.nottingham.ac.uk (this should be done before you arrive at the University), and in person at the Sports Centre at University Park. You can find out more about your University registration at www.nottingham.ac.uk/current/registration. If you’re studying part-time, you still need to register on the Portal, but you don’t need to come in to register in person.

Living in Nottingham With two universities, Nottingham is a fun, vibrant place to be a student and there are plenty of restaurants, cinemas, bars, theatres, events and historical sites to keep you entertained. Check out the timetable on p. 10-11 for all the events we’ve got planned to help you find your feet over the first week of term.
Living in halls JCRs
All halls of residence have a JCR (Junior Common Room) Committee to organise events and activities, offer welfare support and to represent their students to the University and to the Students’ Union. All JCRs are part of the Students’ Union and are made up of students who live in the hall they represent. There are Postgraduate Reps on the JCR Committees for Broadgate Park – including Cloister House - Raleigh Park and St Peter’s Court. Melton doesn’t have a specific Postgraduate Rep, but as everyone who lives there is a postgraduate student, everyone on the JCR Committee is a postgraduate anyway! Nominations for the new JCR Committee members will run from 4th-11th October 2010 and voting will take place from 20th-21st October. If you’d like to have a say in the way your hall’s run, why not stand for a position? You’re not just limited to running to be a Postgraduate Rep either – you can stand for any position you like. Check the PGSA website for tips on living in Nottingham.

Student housing charity, Unipol (www.unipol.org.uk/nottingham), can also offer advice if you have any trouble with your accommodation. You can find out more about SARC and Unipol on p.14 and p.6.

The Union runs shops in the Portland Building at University Park, at Jubilee campus and in the Medical School at QMC. You can pick up all the essentials like a sandwich or a pint of milk and don’t forget to take advantage of the discounted newspapers – you can’t beat a copy of the Times for 25p!
Print Shop
The Print Shop is in the Portland Building. It’s THE place to go for photocopying, posters, binding, laminating, booklets and lots more. It offers a great turnaround at competitive prices, and, as it’s owned and run by the Students’ Union, every penny you spend goes straight back to the Union. A price list is available at www.su.nottingham.ac.uk/printshop.
