Elections

Welcome to the Students’ Union Elections 2011! As a student at the University of Nottingham, you’re automatically a member of the Students’ Union and you’re therefore eligible to vote for the people YOU want to represent students during 2011-12. This election is for all Officers of three important Students’ Union Committees – the SU Executive, SU Representational Officers and SU Faculty Coordinators. That’s over 20 Officer positions in total! Every Officer position may have several candidates standing for it, but only one can win for each. YOU DECIDE!

The SU Executive The Exec is made up of nine students, elected by YOU who are responsible for managing and developing your Students’ Union. New students take office every year and all but one work full-time for the SU, taking a year out during or after their studies. The Exec ensures that the student voice is present at all levels of University decision making and that students’ needs are addressed by the University and by external organisations. The Exec is also the day-to-day managing body of the Students’ Union, leading and setting the direction for the whole organisation. Each Officer has their own remit of responsibility.

The SU Representational Officers The SU’s Representational Officers make sure that every student at Nottingham is able to have their voice heard. Working voluntarily alongside their degree, they work with the Exec and their own Committees to ensure the needs of all students are addressed by the the University, the Students’ Union and on a national scale.

Your Vote Counts! The SU Undergraduate Faculty Coordinators Undergraduate Faculty Coordinators ensure that students’ views and concerns about their courses are heard by the University and other external bodies. Working voluntarily, alongside their degree, they help to keep the Course Rep system running smoothly, run a whole Faculty’s representation system and provide a link between students and the Education Officer. You can only vote for a Faculty Coordinator if you are part of the Faculty that they represent.

You can only vote for a Representational Officer if you are, or self define as, the group of people that they are there to represent.

This booklet contains the manifestos of all the candidates so you can decide who to vote for.

Go and Vote 4 - 11 March 2011

You can vote online on the Portal. More information is available at Voting Information Stations in the Portland Building, George Green Library, QMC Medical School entrance, Hallward Library, Sutton Bonington Library and the Jubilee Exchange Building. Voting: 4 - 11 March 2011

Why Vote?

The people you elect make a big difference to your university life, whether in relation to your course, your welfare, your personal development or your social life. To see what the current Officers have been doing this year, visit: su.nottingham.ac.uk/yswd

The Voting System Explained

Students’ Union Elections are run using the single transferable voting (STV) system where you express a list of preferences rather than voting for a single candidate. This means that no vote is wasted, because if your first choice doesn’t have enough support to be elected, your vote will be passed on to your second (and third, fourth, etc.) preference.

RE-OPEN NOMINATIONS Why Vote RON? If RON is elected, another election will be held in which more candidates can stand. You should only use RON if you would rather we held another election than see certain candidates voted in. If you choose to do this, you should list RON ahead of the candidate(s) you want to eliminate.
