Postgraduate Students' Association
Welcome to the University of Nottingham Students’ Union. We hope you’re looking forward to the start of term. When you register with the University you’ll automatically become a member of both the Students’ Union and the Postgraduate Students’ Association (PGSA). This booklet will give you an overview of what this means, how you can get involved and what we can do for you. There’s a guide to some of the events taking place over the first week of term to help you find your feet and meet other people, and an introduction to the Graduate School where you’ll find the support and training you need to get you through your studies. As your Postgraduate Officer and Chair of the Nottingham PGSA I’ll be your voice within the Students’ Union, making sure your views are heard and your interests are taken seriously. You’ll also be hearing from me regularly via email and through the PGSA Facebook group: PGSA Postgraduate Students’ Association. If you get the chance, come to the Newcomers’ Night Out at Pitcher and Piano in the city centre on Monday 21st September from 8pm. It’s FREE and it’s a great opportunity to meet other new postgraduates. Visit the PGSA stand at Freshers’ Fair from 10am4pm, 22nd-24th September in the big tent on Nightingale Field, University Park (despite the name, postgraduates are definitely welcome; it’s not just for freshers). We’ll be more than happy to answer absolutely any questions you might have and to discuss what the Students’ Union and the PGSA can do for you. I look forward to meeting you and if you see me about, please say hi! Rebecca Lockhart Postgraduate Officer 2009/10

‘Give it a Go’ Taster Sessions
Ever wanted to try a new skill like salsa dancing or learn a bit about wine tasting but think you’re too busy to join a society? The PGSA runs Taster Sessions in partnership with Students’ Union societies so you can try something new without committing too much time. Of course, if you like what you try you can always take it further and join the society afterwards. You never know, it could be the start of a whole new hobby. The first Taster Session of term will be with RamSoc on Sunday 27th September. You can find out more about joining Students’ Union sports clubs and societies on p. 13.
Sport
The PGSA runs several sports teams and there are leagues, events and activities throughout the year. Whether you’re a seasoned sportsperson or you just want to try something new and get a little exercise there’s ample opportunity to get involved. From PGSA teams that compete in the University’s intra-mural leagues to oneoff events like fun runs and climbing sessions, there’ll be something to suit your level (and commitment).
Representation
The PGSA is there to represent you to the Students’ Union, the University and on a national level. As well as Rebecca Lockhart, your Postgraduate Officer, the PGSA Committee consists of a General Secretary, Treasurer, Welfare Officer and a number of Social Secretaries and Sports Secretaries.
The PGSA needs you!
ElectionsNominations: 9am on 28th Sept - 5pm on 9th Oct Voting: 9am on 12th Oct - 5pm on 16th Oct We need a new PGSA Committee for 2009/10 so if you’re interested in helping to run events, socials, sports teams, or representing your fellow postgraduates, why not stand for a Committee position? The PGSA is a good place to start if you want to do a little bit more than study whilst you’re at Nottingham … and you can get involved straight away! We organise everything to fit around your academic responsibilities and it arms you with some great CV boosting skills. You can find out more about how to join the PGSA Committee at www.pgsa.org.uk.

Living in Nottingham With two universities, Nottingham is a fun, vibrant place to be a student and there are plenty of restaurants, cinemas, bars, theatres, events and historical sites to keep you entertained. Check out the timetable on p. 10-11 for all the events we’ve got planned to help you find your feet over the first week of term.
Living in halls JCRs
All halls of residence have a JCR (Junior Common Room) Committee to organise events and activities, offer welfare support and to represent their students to the University and to the Students’ Union. All JCRs are part of the Students’ Union and are made up of students who live in the hall they represent. There are Postgraduate Reps on the JCR Committees for Broadgate Park – including Cloister House - Raleigh Park and St Peter’s Court. Melton doesn’t have a specific Postgraduate Rep, but as everyone who lives there is a postgraduate student, everyone on the JCR Committee is a postgraduate anyway! Nominations for the new JCR Committee members will run from 5th-16th October 2009 and voting will take place from 22nd-23rd October. If you’d like to have a say in the way your hall’s run, why not stand for a position? You’re not just limited to running to be a Postgraduate Rep either – you can stand for any position you like.

Student Parents Postgraduate study can be challenging enough, so if you’re juggling university work with bringing up children, you really have got your hands full. The PGSA is there to offer support and guidance should you need it and there’ll be plenty of opportunities throughout your time at the University for you to socialise with other student parents. We’re there to help, so make the most of us!
Come and say hello
The PGSA will have a stand at Freshers’ Fair in the big tent on Nightingale field from 22nd-24th September, 10am-4pm. If you get the chance, we’d love you to come along and meet us (you can bring the kids of you like) so we can let you know more about all the things the PGSA can do for you.

Events
The PGSA runs regular, family-friendly events, like our Big Days Out, so you can take a well-earned break and have some fun with the kids. Keep checking our website, www.pgsa.org.uk, and the Facebook group, PGSA Postgraduate Students’ Association, for the latest events. Alternatively, join our student parents’ mailing list by emailing supgofficer@nottingham.ac.uk and we’ll make sure you’re kept updated. To kick things off, here’s what we’ve got planned during Week One: · Family meet and greet, Friday 25th September, 3-5pm, Graduate School · Family film night, Friday 25th September, 5.30-8pm, Savoy Cinema (film tbc). Tickets cost just £2 and are available from the Students’ Union Reception in the Portland Building. · Family day out at Attenborough Nature Reserve, Saturday 26th September, 10am-4pm. Tickets are £3. Wear warm clothes and bring a picnic.
