Hello and a very big welcome to Nottingham from your Students’ Union! We’re one of the biggest, most active Students’ Unions in the country and as a student at Nottingham you’re automatically a member. This means that you have access to hundreds of fantastic services and activities including societies, sports clubs, welfare, events, representation, volunteering and more. We know that starting university can seem a bit daunting, especially if this is the first time you’ve lived away from home, but this really is where the fun begins. Over the next few days you’ll have the chance to join some of our societies and sports clubs (there are over 200 of them so you’ll have plenty to choose from!), meet new people and, of course, enjoy loads of Week One events. If you find it a bit hard to settle in at first don’t worry, you’re not on your own - we have plenty of welfare services to help you find your feet (you can find out more in the Students’ Union Welcome Pack you received when you moved into your hall). Remember, Week One is your chance to make new friends, try new things and have a great time, so check out the timetables in this booklet to find out about everything we’ve got in store for you. Most importantly, have a great time! Will Vickers University of Nottingham Students’ Union President 2010/11

Week One 2010 Week One is all about celebrating the start of your student life at Nottingham. It’s full of day trips, fancy dress, parties, inter-hall competitions, activities and endless opportunities to make new friends.
The aim of the week is to get you settled into university life as quickly and easily as possible and we’ll be putting on a huge number of events to fill your social calendar and help you to meet new people. There really is something for everyone, whether you fancy an evening at the student-run theatre watching a play or dancing the night away in a Nottingham club. What’s more, all the profits that are made from ticket sales to Week One events go straight back into making the Students’ Union even better for you. We have our very own website, www.su.nottingham.ac.uk/weekone, where you can find out more information, so don’t forget to have a browse.
What to expect over your first few days You can check out the timetables in this booklet to see where you’ll be and what you’ll be doing over the next few days, but here are some of the top things to look out for: · Hall welcome talks – say hello to your Hall Managers and Wardens

Week One Reps Starting university is a big step and there’s a lot to take in over your first few days. That’s why help is at hand from your Week One Reps who are there to guide you through your first few days at Nottingham and to help you have a whole lot of fun along the way. There are Reps in every hall and, if you’re a Medic or an international student, you’ll have special Reps of your very own. All Week One Reps are second years so they were in exactly the same position as you are now just 12 months ago. They know what it’s like to be new so don’t be afraid to ask questions, no matter how silly they might seem.
What your Week One Reps can do for you
· Help to make your first week at Nottingham a fun and completely unique experience
· Sell you tickets to Week One events. Be sure to get your tickets early because they sell out fast!
· Tell you about all the day-time and night-time events we’ve got planned throughout the week · Clarify meeting times and places · Direct you to where you need to be on campus, for example, for your University registration · Help you to find your way around Nottingham, including telling you how to use the Hopper buses and how to get into town from campus.
Where to find your Week One Reps · At the front of your hall or in the dining area · If you’re not living in halls, your Week One Reps can be found in The Venue, Portland Building, 10am-4pm every day of the week. · If you’re an international student you’ll meet your Week One Reps during International Welcome Week.

Get home safely
Make sure you get home safely. Only get into a licensed Hackney cab (there are loads of them in Nottingham, so there’s no excuse not to). It should have a meter and the driver’s ID should be clearly displayed. If this isn’t the case, don’t get in! You can call Nightline on 0115 9514985 (14985 internal) for the numbers of reliable taxi firms.
Nightline
Lines are open 7pm-8am every night during term 0115 951 4985 (14985 internal) nighlineanon@nottingham.ac.uk Nightline is a student-run, completely confidential listening and information service. If you’re finding it a bit difficult to settle in, one of the friendly student volunteers will be happy to listen and if you need more practical information like where to get a decent pizza at 3am or cinema times, they can help out with that too. If you’d rather not call you can email anonymously (the person who picks up your email won’t be able to see your email address) and your message will be answered within 48 hours.
Any problems?
Hopefully everything will go smoothly for you over your first week at university and beyond, but if you have any problems or if you need any help, check out the numbers on your Students’ Union Safety Card. Safety Cards will be handed out around campus and at Freshers’ Fair during Week One, or you can pick one up from an Easy Tiger Rep. The Safety Card has all sorts of useful contact details on, including the Student Advice & Representation Centre (SARC), Cripps Health Centre, NHS Direct and counselling services.

Nottingham City Centre As well as now being part of one of the best Universities in the country, you are also part one of the most exciting cities in Britain. Nottingham is quite literally in the centre of everything! Not only is it well placed geographically (being in the middle of the country) but it is also a great place to go for entertainment, shopping or even historical visits. Nottingham is a fantastic student city, a claim well supported by the Department of Environment who have declared it to have the “most vibrant” city centre in the UK. For the more active folk amongst you, don’t forget that we have the National Water Sports Centre, National Ice Arena and the Peak District National Park just a short drive away. In fact, Nottingham has more sporting facilities for its population size than anywhere else in Europe!
