Suburban Slum Wasteland Industrial Area
PROFILE The Gateway from the North, the Capital’s Slum, and the Trash Mountain… All nicknames and associations made with the Bourj-Hammoud District. Despite the negative connotations, the area is still considered home to many, and the starting point for those who were left with nothing. After 1928, Armenian refugees who had survived the Ottoman persecution started settling in the area, in compact quarters organized in regular gridiron patterns. After 1946, attracted by employment opportunities in and around the Capital, emigrants from the South, Palestinians and Syrians, settled in the area. These inhabitants became the working force of the adjacent industrial strip. Throughout the years, the Coastal stretch became dangerously degraded and has become the backyard of the Capital where are located all environmentally hazardous and harmful services. These include, a solid waste dump hill, the Sukomi waste sorting and treatment plant, a slaughterhouse, a car tires dumping area, and a badly polluted fishing harbor. The area became a source of nauseating smells that spread all over the District, carried by the prevailing South-West breezes. The proposed design focuses on rejuvenating the constitutional elements that once formed the District. Reshaping its ground elements to portray what every culture and city are united by: A living front. A safe haven for the workers, inhabitants and city dwellers that wish to escape the numerous limitations of the District. The intervention transforms the wasteland, located at the extreme end of Bourj-Hammoud, into a green space where nature becomes the main inhabitant.

10.1 Concept Vision Sitting at 40m above sea level, the 170 000 m2 mound can easily be seen from the congested city. Over the years, 40m represented accumulated trash, toxicity and unsanitary components. Inhabitants would look out their window and witness the living representation of a slum. The landscape project aims at reshaping the mound’s identity, and re-establishing the links between the city, the industries and its residents. Such transformation prioritizes an extensive treatment plan to eliminate the health hazards and a strategy to enhance the safety aspect in the overall site connectivity. The concept shall reshape the 40m and establish it as a key natural landmark that represents community, safety, and refuge.

10.2 Master Plan Famous for its degraded nature, its trash and its negative reputation, Bourj Hammoud is an area that most people avoid, and specifically, avoid the mound. The proposed design challenges the image presented and transforms the heart of the problem into the heart of the city. After an extensive area treatment, the mound is turned into a key landmark that reconnects the city and the industries to the coast. By materializing these connections through safe pathways across the main nodes of the area, visitors are lead to a green haven, filled to bloom with phytoremediation plants. The design further emphasizes the boldness of the mound by complimenting it with a 50m wide stairs that lead to the top. This intervention sleekly works with the existing contours and blends into them for minimal interference. Inhabitants would look out their window and no longer witness the living representation of a slum but one of nature.

Senior Retreat Healing Garden Biomimicry Design
2
PROFILE Located 65 km from the Capital, Niha, one of the largest towns in the Mount Lebanon region, is secluded within an overwhelming greenery. Historically, a location of great religious, economic and political value, the area was thriving. Today however, due to the ever-growing number of emigrants seeking better opportunities, families are separated, and only the middle aged and seniors are left to tend to themselves. Known for their independence, benevolent, and altruistic nature, the current citizens of the area had requested to build a retirement home that would recreate a sense of family for them and any wishing incomer. The home is envisioned as a landmark of high quality design and accommodation that can compete with the Middle East region. True to these virtues, the project design embodies key elements that serve to heal, connect and repurpose each member in its community. The facility shall establish a system of ‘smart community’ through which every individual shall have an important task to uptake. These tasks allow the members a sense of responsibility and commitment while also allowing them to be hands-on with nature. Combining healing gardens with biomimicking elements from the Honey Bee – as honey making is one of Niha’s most valued asset- the design approach transforms the project into a theoretical hive through which renewable resources, sustainable strategies and enriching values are formed.

HUMAN HIVE- HEALING BIOMIMICRY HUMAN HIVE- HEALING BIOMIMICRY
11.1 Concept Vision A retirement home is often looked down on with sadness. The patients, even when placed in the most prestige medical care, often suffer from depression and symptoms of isolation. These facilities often implement a healing garden which helps to lift the morale, however, they often lack a key factor: maintaining the sense of purpose of each member. The proposed design combines healing gardens with biomimicking elements from the Honey Bee. It extracts the key criteria of these gardens and merges them with the hive system of smart community. The facility thus balances both mental and physical needs of each individual.

Taking into account the natural elements of the site, the area was divided into two main parts. The Northern part, which is lower in elevation, is mainly intended for seclusion. It contains the amphitheater and solitary gardens. The design accentuates the view points by creating meandering paths through the lush greenery. The extensive vegetation helps create shading, and buffering for the event space. The Southern part, which is higher in elevation, is designed to encourage socialization. The open space includes programs that stimulate teamwork and activity, while also providing refuge from the strong winds and sun through the dense vegetation.

Targets the LEED/BREAM certification standards Temporary Installation Furniture Design
2
PROFILE The Waterfront City project targets the LEED/BREAM certification standards and is thus aiming to balance Economy, Equity and Environment. One main element of the design is the integration of a farmers’ market. The concept behind it is about promoting local production, creating a venue where consumers directly interact with the producers and linking rural traditions and customs to city dwellers. The project will establish one farmers’ market on a weekly basis in a designated area in the residential complex; this market will be managed by a unit of trained local personnel from cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and producers. The unit will be responsible of organizing the market and developing a strategic work plan to enhance marketing of sustainably produced foods. Although some small-scale initiatives have been developed in Lebanon to promote conservation and the sustainable use of the agro-biodiversity, as well as the marketing of the sustainable agro-biodiversity products, many small-scale rural producers in different regions still have difficulties in accessing such markets and information on better practices. The present proposal builds on the regional experience of the Environment and Sustainable Development Unit (ESDU) at the American University of Beirut. It has supported and trained community kitchens and cooperatives in rural areas of Lebanon and trained rural women on best practices, food processing, and safety for the purpose of producing Lebanese traditional food. In addition, the proposal builds on the experience and networking with small-scale producers of the Food Heritage Foundation, which has helped link producers to urban consumers through various marketing activities. Local food markets typically involve small-scale farmers and short supply chains in which producers perform marketing functions, including storage, packaging, transportation, distribution, and advertising.

FARMER’S MARKET - LEED - BEAM CERTIFICATE
12.1 Case Studies Farmers’ Markets are venues where small local producers gather to sell their merchandise. The aim of it is to eliminate the middlemen and to directly connect the producers with the consumers. This bazaar reintroduces the local culture and allows its spread to larger communities, specifically in the cities. These markets are known worldwide, they vary in sizes and shapes, but many still successful after centuries. After viewing a few examples from the Middle East and Eastern Asia, several common key points have been noticed.

12.2 Master Plan Inheriting aspects from the worlds’ most successful markets, the following layout combines their major traits and criteria. The design is divided into two halves: the market and the parking. It re-emerges the traditional markets’ atmosphere with its narrow venue while accommodating 169 parking spots, as per the Client’s request. The design accentuates the linearity of the site by positioning three rows along the path. This geometry ensures maximum space usage and a larger exposure of people to the produce. The rows are divided as follow: entertainment activities, kiosks, and the final lane is a series of two stands separated by Palm trees (Phoenix dactylifera) that are used as a form of blockage. This layout forms two main pathways, and three secondary ones, all leading towards the performance stage which acts as an attraction point that lures the visitors in through the kiosks.
