EastEnders -‐ 14-‐09-‐2012 (1)
What kind of realism is being attempted by the program? There is tension between the couples represented in the drama. The camera focuses on their faces to show that they are being serious and what they say is vital for that particular scene and possibly that stays running through the drama. Who is being represented in the drama (who is present) and how? In one scene there is a conversation between Jenin & her husband Michael. The setting is quite dark which shows that what the scene is about would include something dangerous or negative. In another scene there is a conversation between Kat & her husband Alfie. There is some light in the background however the position the couple are set is that they are sitting on a table in the kitchen. This makes things seem tense between the two. Who is not being represented in the drama (who is absent) and why? The characters that are not represented in the drama in that particular scene are the ones who the main characters speak about. For example the man Kat is cheating behind with from her husband, this is so the audience keeps watching the drama to find out what will happen next. Can we identify characters that are stereotypical representations? Michael is setting a stereotypical example that men have dominance over women. This is shown by when he talks in a calm way in response of his wife’s frustration. His tone is clear and deep this shows that he is patient and very serious about what he is saying therefore he does not need to rush and make excuses to what he has to say. Dominance is also shown by Alfie because what he questions his wife he takes a response for. This is shown from when he speaks with a loud tone of voice that then makes his wife feel intimidated who then has to answer with all honesty. Is there a dominant view of the world represented in the drama or are there several different view to choose from? The dominant view of the world represented in the drama is that problems take place between married couples and in order for things to work out and be understandable there must be honesty between the couple. What different responses might the audience members make to these representations? Our society wouldn’t expect a man to stand up for their spouse to be cheating on them. They expect the man to do something about it by either straight away divorcing the wife or going to beat up the other man there wife had cheated with. They wouldn’t expect the man to be patient and try to understand the situation.
