Getting it Done

Getting it Done | Workbook | Day 1

Day 1

Empty your mind of every single thing that you need to do. Everything that has been on your mind. Everything that is on your various to-do-lists. Next, see if you've left anything out. For example - getting buttons sewn onto shirts, dropping off the dry cleaning, filing old coursework. My coach is called Brooke Castillo and she coaches using 'unintentional and intentional models'. I share her exercises in this workbook. So, now write out an unintentional model (just based on the thoughts that have come up) followed by an intentional model (where you choose more neutral or even positive thoughts).

Unintentional Model

Intentional Model

What are your thoughts about this list?

What neutral or positive thoughts could you choose to have about this list?

What are your feelings based on these thoughts?

What are your feelings based on these thoughts?

What actions will these feelings drive?

What results can you hope for based on these actions?

Day 2

Write down the actions and the results you generated from your intentional model yesterday. Now write down all of the obstacles that stand in the way of you being able to achieve the things on your to-do-list. Add these obstacles that need to be overcome to the list. E.g If completing a Year 8 SOW is a to-do, not knowing about the bits the department want to keep and the bits they want to purge could be an obstacle. So you need to add 'consult the department' to your to-do list. Now write out an unintentional model about your obstacles followed by an intentional one.

Getting it Done | Workbook | Day 3

Day 3

Realise that there is nothing that you MUST do. Brooke Castillo talks about the fact that there is nothing that you must do. EVER. You have free will and are entitled not do do anything on your list. Now write down the things from your list that you don't want to do AND that you don't have to do. Mentally accept the consequences of not doing these things and find peace with your decisions. Now do an unintentional model on the things you have decided you do not have to do, followed by an intentional one.

Unintentional Model

What are your thoughts about the things you have chosen not to do?

What neutral or positive thoughts could you choose to have about the things you have chosen not to do?

Getting it Done

Getting it Done | Workbook | Day 4

Day 4

Having eliminated the things that you do not have to do and do not want to do, today is about prioritisation. Prioritise your entire list focusing on WHEN THINGS NEED TO GET DONE. Again, I got this from Brooke Castillo, and she underscores the importance of this list being reorganised in terms of when things need to get done as opposed to what you think you need to do first. These can be different things! Now write out an unintentional model followed by an intentional one.

Unintentional Model

Intentional Model

What are your thoughts about your new list?

Getting it Done | Workbook | Day 5

Day 5

Today is the day to put everything you have on your list into your calendar being mindful of deadlines. Be sure to chunk tasks out over time so that a SOW maybe takes three sittings of 1 hour to complete. Schedule in your free time, downtime, family time and wellness. There will be things that just don't fit onto the calendar. This is where the gold is. These are the things that you need to talk to your line manager about. This framework gives you a means of having those conversations. Now write out an unintentional model followed by an intentional one.
