Growing healthier and happier plants is supported by our annually updated planting and growing guide. Our videos on YouTube provide further support and help you succeed in growing healthy plants, which in turn, yield fruits that are healthy for you. Locally grown and home grown berries are being consumed in record numbers! More people are demanding healthier foods that taste great through the entire year. Our berry plants will produce earlier and later in the season, increasing the possibility of having fresh berries during the entire summer up to the first killing freeze. We sell the most varieties of strawberries and raspberries. This allows berry production to occur in more growing areas. Berry plant varieties do have their limits of heat and cold tolerance. Healthier plants given a little help can produce amazing results. Our staff has been learning how to help you grow the best berry plants even better. Nutraceuticals/Phytochemicals Nutraceuticals are substances that provide a healthy benefit to the human body. High levels of these compounds have been identified in all berries. Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and currants all have generous quantities of these health-promoting compounds. The varieties marked with a H in this catalog contain the highest levels of these phytochemicals.

Check out what our customers are saying about Nourse Farms at davesgarden.com!

Shrinking budgets for strawberry and bramble research have made it essential to generate funding from other sources. NASGA and NARBA have contacted nurserymen in the US and Canada with a plan to collect $1.00/1000 strawberry plants and $0.01/bramble plant sold during the course of a year. Funds collected are then distributed to research projects that have been approved by the committees of these groups. Nourse Farms is an active participant in this voluntary collection program.

Currants and gooseberries provide an excellent low border, and gooseberry bushes’ thorns will keep out unwanted pests. Strawberries make a perfect ground cover. Planting a few varieties will produce berries all season long.

Elderberry bushes are fast growing and hardy. They typically grow quite large and full with clusters of tiny white flowers in late spring followed by clusters of berries in late summer.

The No Planting Zone is a guideline for all of our plants. Planting in areas that see little or no sun will lead to plants that will struggle to survive. If plants do survive, the small crop produced will have a lot of disease pressure.

The Caution Zone is a place where plants will struggle during high heat months. Because of extra protection from wind and higher temperatures, plants and fruit can get an overdose of sun and heat.

NORTH

Cane plantings such as blackberries and raspberries will climb fences and trellises and become a lovely ornamental hedge; they will also burst with color in the spring just before bearing their fruit.

Blueberry bushes, excellent for beginners, develop into 4- to 6-foot tall shrubs that turn a brilliant red in the fall.

Growing Health and Happiness Growing berries is not just a way of assuring an abundance of fresh, delicious and colorful fruit; it’s also an easy way to add beauty and interest to your landscape. Since each variety of plant has its own distinct growth habit, the benefit of planting berries offers both aesthetic and practical rewards. Garden plan drawing by Janna Thompson, Nourse Farms

strawberries

Nourse Farms is excited to be offering two new strawberry varieties for 2013! We’ve been testing these berries for over three years to make sure they add something unique and different to the existing berries on the market. Each one of these new selections promise superior flavor and production potentials than that of their midseason and everbearing rivals. Growing several varieties of strawberries not only extends the production season, it also spreads the risk of loss to weather and garden pests. With this year’s additions, your biggest challenge will be to limit yourself to just one or two varieties. Our traditional top ten sellers are a sure bet for satisfaction.

Most strawberry growers allow their beds to become over grown with too many plants. Maintaining a minimum of 4-6 inches between plants will yield bigger and juicer berries. Take time to locate good straw mulch. Hay or cheap straw will carry pounds of weed seeds. Apply the straw in mid to late November, just as the soil begins to freeze. We believe 2-3 inches over the entire bed is best. We do not recommend leaves. Weed often and weed well, do not allow weeds to become established. A big mistake people make is to till the soil too deep. We recommend shallow tilling at 1 inch or less.

Evie-2* Licensed Variety EXCLUSIVE!

Commercial growers will want to plant this variety from the Peter Vinson breeding program in Kent, England. An improvement over Everest, this day-neutral is easier to grow, higher yielding and less sensitive to the warm summer temperatures that shut down day-neutral production in the East and Midwest. Berries have an attractive red color, good flavor and maintain good size. In fruiting trials here, Evie-2 produced the largest spring crop of any dayneutral variety we have tested to date. Best in zones 4-8. 25 for $12.50 • 50 for $19.00 • 100 for $31.00

Mara des Bois

Developed by a French breeding program, this everbearing strawberry produces small to medium fruit, containing the highest flavor and fragrance of any everbearer. Berries have an attractive red color with a high gloss. Planted in the spring, Mara des Bois will produce fruit during the summer into the fall. The following spring it also produces a good spring crop. Although considered a specialty variety for home gardeners, it is also good for commercial applications when high taste and berry fragrance is required. Grows best in zones 5-7. 25 for $15.50 • 50 for $24.00 • 100 for $41.00

Albion* U.S. Plant Patent #16,228 Albion produces very large fruit that is mostly conical, very firm and red in color. Its flavor is very good for a day-neutral. To get the high yields it is capable of producing, this variety will need a stronger watering and nutrient program than any other everbearer. Wider plant spacing will deliver the largest berries. It is resistant to Verticillium wilt, Phytophthora crown rot, and has some resistance to anthracnose crown rot. Grows best in zones 5-7. 25 for $12.50 • 50 for $19.00 • 100 for $31.00 Seascape

Released by the University of California Breeding Program in 1992. This day-neutral has been highly successful for northeastern growers for summer and fall production. The plants have the potential to be the most productive of any day-neutral. The berries are large, firm and have good flavor when picked ripe from the plant. Zones 4-9. 25 for $12.00 • 50 for $18.50 • 100 for $30.00

NEW FOR 2013! San Andreas* U.S. Plant Patent #19,975

Avoid Common Mistakes Read free planting guide 1-3 months before planting.

Healthy berry plants require these important elements: Planting time. We recommend planting when soil temperatures exceed 40 degrees. One of the biggest mistakes is planting in cold and wet soils. As a rule, we recommend planting at least 2 weeks after the earliest date on the zone chart. We do not recommend fall planting in the northeast or midwest.

Plants will fail to flourish if roots are too deep or too shallow.

1.

Pack soil firmly around the roots.

2. A sunny, weed-free location with at least a half-day of sunlight.

Do not plant near wild plants or plants whose origins are unknown. Water well one to three times a week, not every day. Avoid fertilizer burn by fertilizing only after plants are established. Do not soak plants in water more than 1 hour!

3. Clean beds that are frequently weeded. We recommend every 7-14 days. 4. Well-drained soil. For poor drainage conditions, consider raised beds. 5. Proper soil pH. Matching soil pH to plant requirements can be a huge factor in your success. Sample the soil before planting and contact your local cooperative extension office for assistance. 6.

Crop rotation. Avoid planting strawberries or raspberries in soils where previous crops have included strawberries, raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor the soil pathogens Verticillium, Phytophthora and nematodes and may affect your new plants.

7. Irrigation. Maintain proper moisture levels throughout the season and, most importantly, during the establishment period. Drip irrigation is imperative when planting in raised beds.

USA Zone Chart If in doubt about anything in this catalog, please call us here at Nourse Farms, (413) 665-2658, or email your questions to info@noursefarms.com where a member of our helpful staff will confirm your zone and ensure that you get the best available plants for your home gardening pleasure. Planting Zones are used as a guideline to determine climate adaptibility of plants. The zone desiginations that we list are estimates based on the information we have available to us. In selecting varieties, we suggest you be conservative in regard to the zone for best results.

Strawberry Planting Tips

Asparagus Planting Tips

Avoid planting strawberries in soils where previous crops have included raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor soil pathogens, which may affect your new plants. Do not mulch using materials like decayed or wet leaves that tend to mat down and can smother plants. Do not renovate day-neutral strawberries. Spacing: Unless otherwise noted, plant 12 to 18 inches in the row, 3 to 4 feet between rows. Depth is important — see detailed planting guide. Roots should be planted straight down. Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.

Do not add compost to soil until plants are growing. Spacing: 12 to 14 inches between plants, 3 feet between rows with furrows 8 to 10 inches deep. For heavier, clay-like soils, plant 7-8 inches deep. VERY IMPORTANT! Asparagus requires very sweet soil with pH 7.2. Use soil tests to check and maintain soil pH and phosphorous levels. Make soil pH adjustments before you plant. Lime may be necessary.

Bramble Planting Tips Avoid planting the roots too deep. Do not plant green tissue culture plants until the danger of frost has passed. Your plants will come with one packet of Viterra Agrigel®. Use it at planting to help maintain moisture and establish plants with little stress. Spacing: For raspberries, unless otherwise noted, 18 to 24 inches for reds and yellows; 20 to 24 inches for blacks. Plant blackberries 3 to 4 feet apart. Between rows, leave 8 to 12 feet depending on machinery. Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.

Rhubarb Planting Tips Water well during excessive heat. Spacing: 3 feet; 5 to 6 feet between rows. Set buds about 1 inch below soil surface. Maintain a pH between 6.0 and 6.8.

Horseradish Planting Tips Spacing: 10 to 12 inches between plants, 3 feet between rows. Plant at 45-degree angle with flat end facing up; the flat end should be about 1 inch below the soil surface. Maintain a pH between 6.2 and 6.7.

Gardening Resources

Blueberry Planting Tips IMPORTANT! A pH of 4.5 to 4.8 is required; 5.0 is too high! For best results, amend pH levels before planting and apply garden sulfur regularly. To establish plants successfully without prior pH adjustments, read our planting guide. Excessive sulfur can be toxic. Do not use leaves or sawdust as mulch. They inhibit hydration. Do not use fertilizer that contains potassium chloride. Do not fertilize at planting. Do not fertilize in late summer or early fall. This could lead to new growth, which is susceptible to winter injury and disease. Spacing: 4 to 5 feet in the row, with 8 to 12 feet between rows. Be careful not to plant too deeply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Purchasing information

What is the best time to plant? Don’t rush! Waiting until the soil is warmer, above 40 degrees, and drier is best. The biggest mistake growers make is planting in cold and muddy soil. As a rule, we recommend planting 1-2 weeks after the earliest date on the zone chart.

Order early! Prices valid to May 31, 2013. Use the enclosed order form, call or order online. Order early to ensure your first choices and on-time shipping. We make every effort to ship on time. We do not recommend fall planting.

What do I do with the plants if I am not quite ready? Plants are easily stored in the bottom of the refrigerator up to 1 week after arrival. Keep plants in the shipping bags and keep the bags sealed. Call us to delay shipping by the Friday before they are scheduled to ship. 90% of all orders shipped are loaded Monday morning by 9am. Do not store below 28˚F. What is Agri-gel? Agri-gel is a polymer that absorbs many times its weight in water. It helps all plants get established easier, it is especially helpful for raspberry plants. We include a sample in every shipment that is enough for 25 strawberry or raspberry plants. What is tissue culture? Tissue culture is a propagation method that ensures virus and disease free plants. Since 1980, all of our planting stock begins as virus and disease free micro-propagated cuttings. Why do Nourse Farms plants cost more? 99% of our plants are either first or second generation from our tissue culture facility. Our plants set the bar for health and vigor.

Visit us at noursefarms.com for pick-your-own hours or call our berry line at 413-665-2650 for additional information.

Protect your harvest from many pests, including Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD), Drosophila Suzukii, a new invasive pest which can cause extensive damage to many fruit crops. Its presence has been confirmed in most states. Unlike native types (of drosophila) which deposit their eggs in fully ripe fruit, this one deposits eggs in fruit before fruit is ripe. By the time fruit is ripe, the larvae can be very well developed. 13 ft. x 30 ft. $99.00 13 ft. x 50 ft. $149.00 13 ft. x 100 ft. $259.00

New for 2013!

TulaMagic®

Killarney

Released in Manitoba in 1961. Released in 1961, Killarney is especially winter hardy. It is an early mid-season variety ripening about a week after Boyne. It’s medium to large-sized berries have an attractive bright-red color and a good raspberry aroma and flavor. The canes grow upright, are medium-sized and sturdy. This variety would make a great fresh raspberry pie. Best in zones 4-7. 5 for $16.50 • 10 for $25.00 • 25 for $46.75

Lauren* U.S. Plant Patent #10,610

Nourse Farms offers the most raspberry varieties! Now, growers from zone 3 to zone 8 can produce berries throughout the entire summer and fall. The introduction of TulaMagic® will allow growers in zones 5 thru 7 a new alternative in the early mid-season. See page 11 for raspberry planting guideline and page 15 for additional planting tips.

summer bearing ear l y season

Summer Bearing varieties produce fruit on second-year canes which are usually pruned out after summer harvest.

Prelude* U.S. Plant Patent #11,747

Recently released by the Cornell Small Fruit Breeding Program in Geneva, NY. Prelude is identified as the earliest ripening summer red raspberry, ripening in mid-June under New York conditions. Although Prelude is also fall bearing, it produces the biggest portion of its crop in the spring. Very winter hardy and vigorous, Prelude berries are round conic, coherent, with very good flavor. An excellent choice when early fruit and quality are required. Grows best in zones 4-8. 5 for $17.50 • 10 for $26.75 • 25 for $49.75

Boyne

Recommended for beginners. Released in 1960, Boyne is an early-season variety that is extremely winter hardy. It consistently produces deep-red, medium-sized berries. The medium-sweet, aromatic flavor makes it great for freezing and jam. It will grow where other varieties experience winter injury to the canes. Best for zones 3-7. 5 for $16.50 • 10 for $25.00 • 25 for $46.75

Released by the cooperative breeding program of MD, NJ, VA and WI. Lauren is an early-season variety that has a large size similar to Titan’s — with wonderful flavor! Lauren is reported to have better resistance to Phytophthora root rot and 20% higher yield than its parent, Titan. Response from growers who have tested Lauren indicates they are pleased with the large quantities of uniform, high-quality fruit and with its long fruiting season. Lauren has shown moderate-to-good winter hardiness to date. Space plants 22 to 24 inches apart in rows. Best in zones 5-7. 5 for $17.50 • 10 for $26.75 • 25 for $49.75

NEW FOR 2013! EXCLUSIVE!

TulaMagic ® * U.S. Plant Patent Pending, (Fruatfri variety) This recent introduction comes from Switzerland and the breeder is Reto Neuweiler. TulaMagic®, a cross of Autumn Bliss and Tulameen, is a new summer/floricane variety which can also produce a late fall/primocane crop. This variety fruits after Prelude, but before Nova, and a week earlier than Tulameen for the summer crop. TulaMagic® is very vigorous and shows low susceptibility to Phytophthora root rot disease. Plant Breeder Dr. John Clark, from the University of Arkansas, has released these new varieties. In northern areas, the development of these everbearing blackberries may allow production in some regions where other blackberry varieties are not winter hardy. After mowing the canes to the ground early in the spring (as with Heritage) the new growth produces flowers in August and berries in September. We recommend you plant trials of these new varieties to evaluate their performance at your location. Recommended for home gardeners and for local commercial production. Berries will be a bit larger and firmer than Prime Jan with a more upright growth habit. Customer feedback suggests that Prime Jim is more widely adapted than originally thought. Recommended for home gardeners and direct market growers. Grows best in zones 5-8. 5 for $24.50 • 10 for $41.00 • 25 for $91.00

This thornless variety has excellent quality fruit, with firm, sweet, attractive berries. Fruit ripens before Navaho. Plant has very erect canes, and intermediate vigor. BLUECROP

Blueberries can last for several decades if the pH is below 5.0 and they are planted with wood chips. Following our directions in the planting guide will greatly contribute to your success. Mulch your blueberries every year with wood chips that are 3-6 months old. This will help keep weeds down and provide a great place for roots to grow. At maturity, six plants can feed a family of four for a year! Do not use softened water on blueberries. The salts will hurt the plants. Blueberries only utilize ammoniated forms of nitrogen. Do not use regular 10-10-10.

13 ft. x 30 ft. $99.00 13 ft. x 50 ft. $149.00 13 ft. x 100 ft. $259.00

Millennium NEW FOR 2013!

New for 2013!

Millennium

Long-term investment Asparagus, rhubarb and horseradish are all plantings that will continue to yield abundantly for 15 to 20 years if given the proper care. Get ahead of the game with our one-year-old asparagus roots, which meet the nursery standard for two-year-old crowns. Growers have been impressed at how these bigger crowns are jumping out of the ground sooner than others. The new male hybrids (90%-95% male) resist fusarium crown rot and other diseases that weaken asparagus plants.

Released from the asparagus breeding program of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, Millennium is establishing itself to be a high performing variety. Originally thought to be best adapted to heavier soils, various trials and results from our grower surveys indicate it is adapted to a wide range of soil types. In a North Carolina trial, accumulating six years of data, it was the second highest producer on a sandy soil site. In our trial, Millennium has been productive, with high quality spears, is tender and has good asparagus flavor. We highly recommend this variety. Zones 3-8. 25 for $23.50 • 50 for $40.75 • 100 for $66.50

Jersey Supreme

The newest release from the New Jersey breeding program. Adapted to temperate, warm and cool climates, field trials show Supreme to have a very high yield potential. Supreme is quite early and cold tolerant. The spear size is more uniform than other Jersey hybrids. It is best adapted to light- to mediumsandy soils. Supreme has demonstrated very good rust resistance and is noted for its tolerance to fusarium. Zones 3-8. 25 for $21.50 • 50 for $37.50 • 100 for $61.50

Jersey Knight

Originated in New Jersey. Jersey Knight is extremely vigorous, has large, succulent spears and quickly attracts a loyal following. The flavor is excellent, and the plant is resistant to rust, crown rot and fusarium. It also does better in heavy, clay-like soils. Zones 3-8. 25 for $21.50 • 50 for $37.50 • 100 for $61.50

Purple Passion

rhubarb Rhubarb is very easy to grow. Plant 3 feet apart in well-prepared soil, with the top of the division level with the soil surface. Do not plant too deeply! When the plants are established, fertilize liberally with manure and garden fertilizer. For continued success, follow this procedure each fall and spring. A wellbalanced fertility program is necessary for optimum results. Soil pH should be 6.0-6.8.

MacDonald Strain Limited Quantities

This strain provides excellent production for commercial growers and home gardeners. This very vigorous, upright-growing strain produces large, tender stalks and has acceptable red color. Shows resistance to root-rot problems. Zones 4-8. 3 for $18.65

This is a unique asparagus variety. Its attractive purple color, milder flavor and tenderness distinguish this variety from others. In addition, our trials indicate Purple Passion has productive yields. For best performance, plant spacing for Purple Passion is 6 to 8 inches apart in the row instead of the usual 12-inch spacing. When cooked, the bright purple color is reduced, but when served fresh in salads it provides a colorful and flavorful accent. Zones 3-8. 25 for $21.50 • 50 for $37.50 • 100 for $61.50

Cawood Delight Limited Quantities

This variety is not as vigorous as MacDonald, but has deeper red color and slightly thicker stalks. Cawood Delight has a stout growth habit that will excel in northern areas. It may struggle in areas with long periods of high heat. We have had a lot of positive feedback on this variety from commercial growers and home gardeners. Best in zones 4-7. 3 for $20.50

CAWOOD DELIGHT

horserad i sh roots

Big Top

We have selected the strain Big Top for its size, vigor, wide adaptability and resistance to foliage diseases, rust and bacterial spot (all common problems in horseradish). These plants are top performers. A few roots will last a lifetime! Soil pH should be 6.0-6.8. Zones 4-8. 5 for $10.10 • 10 for $18.40

Tart, tasty, versatile ribes Admired for generations in Europe for their adaptability as plants and their versatility as food, currants and gooseberries – known collectively as ribes – are growing in popularity in this country. Gooseberries are good cooked, and eaten fresh. They offer a tasty alternative to grapes. Both make excellent jams. Currants, which make a refreshing juice, provide more vitamin C than fresh oranges. Ribes can handle long cold winters, and have excellent shelf-life. They can stay on the vine for up to two weeks, and store well in the refrigerator. red currants

Plant currants and gooseberries in well-prepared, weed-free soil that contains at least 3% organic matter. Planting on a slight slope will facilitate cold air drainage. Avoid southern-facing slopes, since intense sun may injure the plants. Soil pH should be between 6.0 and 6.3. Set black currants 4 to 5 feet apart in the row. Black currant rows should be spaced no less than 5 feet apart; 8 to 9 feet apart is recommended for home gardeners, and up to 10 feet apart for machine harvesting for commercial production. Refer to page 20 of the Nourse Planting Guide for spacing of red currants and gooseberries. Our extensive planting guide will arrive with each order to provide you with further details for success. Our web site also contains helpful information. Massachusetts has restrictions on the planting of currants and gooseberries. Please check with the Massachusetts Department of Food and Agriculture for regulations in your area. Other states may also have planting restrictions. Please contact your local extension offices or the Department of Agriculture for up-to-date regulations.
