Shrinking budgets for strawberry and bramble research have made it essential to generate funding from other sources. NASGA and NARBA have contacted nurserymen in the US and Canada with a plan to collect $1.00/1000 strawberry plants and $0.01/bramble plant sold during the course of a year. Funds collected are then distributed to research projects that have been approved by the committees of these groups. Nourse Farms is an active participant in this voluntary collection program.

Currants and gooseberries provide an excellent low border, and gooseberry bushesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; thorns will keep out unwanted pests. Strawberries make a perfect ground cover. Planting a few varieties will produce berries all season long.

Elderberry bushes are fast growing and hardy. They typically grow quite large and full with clusters of tiny white flowers in late spring followed by clusters of berries in late summer.

The No Planting Zone is a guideline for all of our plants. Planting in areas that see little or no sun will lead to plants that will struggle to survive. If plants do survive, the small crop produced will have a lot of disease pressure.

The Caution Zone is a place where plants will struggle during high heat months. Because of extra protection from wind and higher temperatures, plants and fruit can get an overdose of sun and heat.

NORTH

Cane plantings such as blackberries and raspberries will climb fences and trellises and become a lovely ornamental hedge; they will also burst with color in the spring just before bearing their fruit.

Blueberry bushes, excellent for beginners, develop into 4- to 6-foot tall shrubs that turn a brilliant red in the fall.

Galletta*

U.S. Plant Patent #19,763 (NCH 87-22 x Earliglow) Galletta was developed by Jim Ballington at North Carolina State University. Galletta ripens early in the growing season and produces big, attractive, good-quality berries with a glossy finish. Compared to Sweet Charlie, this new variety produces better quality fruit during the same season. We recommend this variety for both home and commercial use. AC Wendy* U.S. Plant Patent #18,340

(K96-5 x Evangeline) We highly recommend this variety. This early-season variety was developed by the Kentville Research Station in Nova Scotia. An Evangeline cross, Wendy’s fruits are larger than Evangeline. The berry is wedge-shaped to conic, with firm, bright, red-colored flesh. Wendy has an excellent fresh flavor. Plants are vigorous and runner well. They are moderately resistant to powdery mildew and red stele, but susceptible to Verticillium wilt and leaf diseases. Frost damage potential, very early flowering. Trials showed Wendy to be highly productive, of good quality, and it held its fruit size throughout the season. (Fairland x Midland) x (Redglow x Surecrop) Heirloom quality — #1 early-season variety. Recommended for beginners. “Wonderful strawberry flavor” is this variety’s trademark. Most strawberry growers allow their beds to become over grown with too many plants. Maintaining a minimum of 4-6 inches between plants will yield bigger and juicer berries. Take time to locate good straw mulch. Hay or cheap straw will carry pounds of weed seeds. Apply the straw in mid to late November, just as the soil begins to freeze. We believe 2-3 inches over the entire bed is best. We do not recommend leaves. Weed often and weed well, do not allow weeds to become established. A big mistake people make is to till the soil too deep. We recommend shallow tilling at 1 inch or less.

Clancy is a very vigorous, late mid-season variety, similar in season to Cabot or Eros. The berries are round and conical in shape with dark red color and a good flavor. Ovation (Lateglow x Etna) Highly recommended for season extension. Organic/low spray. Released by the USDA, Beltsville, MD, breeding program. Ovation is a late mid-season, disease-resistant variety. Fruiting later than Jewel, Ovation produces fruit that is firm, glossy, large-sized, bright red to orangered in color, with pleasant aromatics and mild flavor. The plant is vigorous, resistant to five strains of red stele and shows good tolerance to foliage diseases. USDA trials show Ovation is well adapted to plasticulture, and is highly recommended for trial. Ovation joins Eros as a season extender. U.S. Plant Patent #21, 201 EXCLUSIVE! Dr. Walther Faedi, at the Instituto Sperimentale per la Fruitticoltura, Forli, Italy, released this very late strawberry. Record is an Idea hybrid, with improved red color, berry quality, and overall performance. In our fruiting trials, the first fruit was picked between July 1st and 3rd, the last pick was July 17th. Record is a very vigorous plant with no apparent foliage issues. We highly recommend Record for very late season production. It is the latest fruiting June bearing strawberry available at this time. Developed by a French breeding program, this everbearing strawberry produces small to medium fruit, containing the highest flavor and fragrance of any everbearer. Avoid Common Mistakes Read free planting guide 1-3 months before planting.

Healthy berry plants require these important elements: Planting time. We recommend planting when soil temperatures exceed 40 degrees. One of the biggest mistakes is planting in cold and wet soils. As a rule, we recommend planting at least 2 weeks after the earliest date on the zone chart. We do not recommend fall planting in the northeast or midwest.

Plants will fail to flourish if roots are too deep or too shallow.

Pack soil firmly around the roots.

2. A sunny, weed-free location with at least a half-day of sunlight.

Do not plant near wild plants or plants whose origins are unknown. Water well one to three times a week, not every day. Avoid fertilizer burn by fertilizing only after plants are established. Do not soak plants in water more than 1 hour!

3. Clean beds that are frequently weeded. We recommend every 7-14 days. 4. Well-drained soil. For poor drainage conditions, consider raised beds. 5. Proper soil pH. Matching soil pH to plant requirements can be a huge factor in your success. Sample the soil before planting and contact your local cooperative extension office for assistance. 6.

Crop rotation. Avoid planting strawberries or raspberries in soils where previous crops have included strawberries, raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor the soil pathogens Verticillium, Phytophthora and nematodes and may affect your new plants.

7. Irrigation. Maintain proper moisture levels throughout the season and, most importantly, during the establishment period. Drip irrigation is imperative when planting in raised beds.

Strawberry Planting Tips

Asparagus Planting Tips

Avoid planting strawberries in soils where previous crops have included raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor soil pathogens, which may affect your new plants. Do not mulch using materials like decayed or wet leaves that tend to mat down and can smother plants. Do not renovate day-neutral strawberries. Spacing: Unless otherwise noted, plant 12 to 18 inches in the row, 3 to 4 feet between rows. Depth is important — see detailed planting guide. Roots should be planted straight down. Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.

Do not add compost to soil until plants are growing. Spacing: 12 to 14 inches between plants, 3 feet between rows with furrows 8 to 10 inches deep. For heavier, clay-like soils, plant 7-8 inches deep. VERY IMPORTANT! Asparagus requires very sweet soil with pH 7.2. Use soil tests to check and maintain soil pH and phosphorous levels. Make soil pH adjustments before you plant. Lime may be necessary.

Bramble Planting Tips Avoid planting the roots too deep. Do not plant green tissue culture plants until the danger of frost has passed. Your plants will come with one packet of Viterra Agrigel®. Use it at planting to help maintain moisture and establish plants with little stress. Spacing: For raspberries, unless otherwise noted, 18 to 24 inches for reds and yellows; 20 to 24 inches for blacks. Plant blackberries 3 to 4 feet apart. Between rows, leave 8 to 12 feet depending on machinery. Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.

Rhubarb Planting Tips Water well during excessive heat. Spacing: 3 feet; 5 to 6 feet between rows. Set buds about 1 inch below soil surface. Maintain a pH between 6.0 and 6.8.

Horseradish Planting Tips Spacing: 10 to 12 inches between plants, 3 feet between rows. Plant at 45-degree angle with flat end facing up; the flat end should be about 1 inch below the soil surface. Maintain a pH between 6.2 and 6.7.

Blueberry Planting Tips IMPORTANT! A pH of 4.5 to 4.8 is required; 5.0 is too high! For best results, amend pH levels before planting and apply garden sulfur regularly. To establish plants successfully without prior pH adjustments, read our planting guide. Excessive sulfur can be toxic. Do not use leaves or sawdust as mulch. They inhibit hydration. Do not use fertilizer that contains potassium chloride. Do not fertilize at planting. Do not fertilize in late summer or early fall. What is the best time to plant? Don’t rush! Waiting until the soil is warmer, above 40 degrees, and drier is best. The biggest mistake growers make is planting in cold and muddy soil. As a rule, we recommend planting 1-2 weeks after the earliest date on the zone chart.

What do I do with the plants if I am not quite ready? Plants are easily stored in the bottom of the refrigerator up to 1 week after arrival. Keep plants in the shipping bags and keep the bags sealed. Call us to delay shipping by the Friday before they are scheduled to ship. 90% of all orders shipped are loaded Monday morning by 9am. Do not store below 28˚F. What is Agri-gel? Agri-gel is a polymer that absorbs many times its weight in water. It helps all plants get established easier, it is especially helpful for raspberry plants. We include a sample in every shipment that is enough for 25 strawberry or raspberry plants. What is tissue culture? Tissue culture is a propagation method that ensures virus and disease free plants. Since 1980, all of our planting stock begins as virus and disease free micro-propagated cuttings. Why do Nourse Farms plants cost more? 99% of our plants are either first or second generation from our tissue culture facility. Our plants set the bar for health and vigor.

Blueberries can last for several decades if the pH is below 5.0 and they are planted with wood chips. Following our directions in the planting guide will greatly contribute to your success. At maturity, six plants can feed a family of four for a year! Do not use softened water on blueberries. The salts will hurt the plants. Blueberries only utilize ammoniated forms of nitrogen. rhubarb Rhubarb is very easy to grow. Plant 3 feet apart in well-prepared soil, with the top of the division level with the soil surface. Do not plant too deeply! When the plants are established, fertilize liberally with manure and garden fertilizer. For continued success, follow this procedure each fall and spring. A wellbalanced fertility program is necessary for optimum results. Soil pH should be 6.0-6.8.

MacDonald Strain Limited Quantities
