Shrinking budgets for strawberry and bramble research have made it essential to generate funding from other sources. NASGA and NARBA have contacted nurserymen in the US and Canada with a plan to collect $1.00/1000 strawberry plants and $0.01/bramble plant sold during the course of a year. Funds collected are then distributed to research projects that have been approved by the committees of these groups. Nourse Farms is an active participant in this voluntary collection program.

Currants and gooseberries provide an excellent low border, and gooseberry bushes’ thorns will keep out unwanted pests. Strawberries make a perfect ground cover. Planting a few varieties will produce berries all season long.
Elderberry bushes are fast growing and hardy. They typically grow quite large and full with clusters of tiny white flowers in late spring followed by clusters of berries in late summer.
The No Planting Zone is a guideline for all of our plants. Planting in areas that see little or no sun will lead to plants that will struggle to survive. If plants do survive, the small crop produced will have a lot of disease pressure. NORTH
The Caution Zone is a place where plants will struggle during high heat months. Because of extra protection from wind and higher temperatures, plants and fruit can get an overdose of sun and heat.
Cane plantings such as blackberries and raspberries will climb fences and trellises and become a lovely ornamental hedge; they will also burst with color in the spring just before bearing their fruit.
You can
Blueberry bushes, excellent for beginners, develop into 4- to 6-foot tall shrubs that turn a brilliant red in the fall.
Grow Healthy!
Growing berries is not just a way of assuring an abundance of fresh, delicious and colorful fruit; it’s also an easy way to add beauty and interest to your landscape. Since each variety of plant has its own distinct growth habit, the benefit of planting berries offers both aesthetic and practical rewards. While choosing Nourse Farms as your supplier of berry plants will get your garden off to a healthy start, eating more fruit can help you grow healthy in both mind and body! Natural Albino Pineberry Also Known as Hula Berry ®
™
As people began travelling more in the 16 and 1700s, they also began moving and trading plants around the world. Strawberry plants from various places ultimately cross-pollinated and created strawberry plants with varying characteristics. Dr. Hans De Jongh, a Dutch strawberry breeder, working with old pineberry varieties and traditional breeding practices (to increase berry size, yield and overall performance) has recently released a distinct and improved variety, the Natural Albino® Pineberry. Considered the best pineberry available! Dramatic color Excellent flavor and aroma Unique small berry (about the size of a nickle) Winter hardy
It is not self-fertile…it needs pollen from a different variety to produce its distinctive fruit. We have chosen a red variety, Sonata (U.S. Plant Patent #18,000) for crosspollination. It is another dutch variety known for its distinctive flavor. Every other row or every other plant must be a self-pollinating variety, so plants are sold as a set of 15 Natural Albino® Hula Berry™ and 15 Sonata plants.
This year we have traditional, bare-root plants available. Treat the plants like other June-bearing varieties, including blossom removal the first year. Planting and care instructions are outlined in our planting guide (viewable online). We will include a detailed planting guide with every order to ensure your success. ORDERING INFORMATION Every collection will have 15 plants each of Natural Albino® Hula Berry™ Pineberry and Sonata. 1-2 collections $21.00 each 3-4 collections $19.50 each 5+ collections $18.00 each U.S. Plant Patent #24,332

Most strawberry growers allow their beds to become over grown with too many plants. Maintaining a minimum of 4-6 inches between plants will yield bigger and juicer berries. Take time to locate good straw mulch. Hay or cheap straw will carry pounds of weed seeds. Apply the straw in mid to late November, just as the soil begins to freeze. We believe 2-3 inches over the entire bed is best. We do not recommend leaves. Weed often and weed well, do not allow weeds to become established. A big mistake people make is to till the soil too deep. We recommend shallow tilling at 1 inch or less.

It is resistant to Verticillium wilt and Phytophthora crown rot, and also has some resistance to anthracnose crown rot. Grows best in zones 4-7. 25 for $11.95 • 50 for $19.95 • 100 for $32.50
Seascape
Released by the University of California Breeding Program in 1992. This day-neutral has been highly successful for northeastern growers for summer and fall production. Avoid Common Mistakes Read free planting guide 1-3 months before planting. Plants will fail to flourish if roots are too deep or too shallow. Pack soil firmly around the roots. Do not plant near wild plants or plants whose origins are unknown. Water well one to three times a week, not every day.
Healthy berry plants require these important elements: 1.
Planting time. We recommend planting when soil temperatures exceed 40 degrees. One of the biggest mistakes is planting in cold and wet soils. As a rule, we recommend planting at least 2 weeks after the earliest date on the zone chart. We do not recommend fall planting in the northeast or midwest.
2.
A sunny, weed-free location with at least a half-day of sunlight.
3.
Clean beds that are frequently weeded. We recommend every 7-14 days.
4.
Well-drained soil. For poor drainage conditions, consider raised beds.
5.
Proper soil pH. Matching soil pH to plant requirements can be a huge factor in your success. Sample the soil before planting and contact your local cooperative extension office for assistance.
6.
Crop rotation. Avoid planting strawberries or raspberries in soils where previous crops have included strawberries, raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor the soil pathogens Verticillium, Phytophthora and nematodes and may affect your new plants.
7.
Irrigation. Maintain proper moisture levels throughout the season and, most importantly, during the establishment period. Drip irrigation is imperative when planting in raised beds.
Avoid fertilizer burn by fertilizing only after plants are established. Do not soak plants in water more than 1 hour!
USA Zone Chart If in doubt about anything in this catalog, please call us here at Nourse Farms, (413) 665-2658, or email your questions to info@noursefarms.com where a member of our helpful staff will confirm your zone and ensure that you get the best available plants for your home gardening pleasure. Strawberry Planting Tips
Asparagus Planting Tips
Avoid planting strawberries in soils where previous crops have included raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor soil pathogens, which may affect your new plants. Do not mulch using materials like decayed or wet leaves that tend to mat down and can smother plants. Do not renovate day-neutral strawberries. Spacing: Unless otherwise noted, plant 12 to 18 inches in the row, 3 to 4 feet between rows. Depth is important — see detailed planting guide. Roots should be planted straight down. Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.
Do not add compost to soil until plants are growing. Spacing: 12 to 14 inches between plants, 3 feet between rows with furrows 8 inches deep. For heavier, clay-like soils, plant 6-8 inches deep. VERY IMPORTANT! Asparagus requires very sweet soil with pH 7.2. Use soil tests to check and maintain soil pH and phosphorous levels. Make soil pH adjustments before you plant, using lime.
Rhubarb Planting Tips Water well during excessive heat. Spacing: 3 feet; 5 to 6 feet between rows. Set buds about 1 inch below soil surface. Maintain a pH between 6.0 and 6.8.
Bramble Planting Tips Avoid planting the roots too deep. Do not plant green tissue culture plants until the danger of frost has passed. Your plants will come with one packet of Viterra Agrigel®. Use it at planting to help maintain moisture and establish plants with little stress. Spacing: For raspberries, unless otherwise noted, 18 to 24 inches for reds and yellows; 20 to 24 inches for blacks. Plant blackberries 3 to 4 feet apart. Between rows, leave 8 to 12 feet depending on machinery. Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.
Horseradish Planting Tips Spacing: 10 to 12 inches between plants, 3 feet between rows. Plant at 45-degree angle with flat end facing up; the flat end should be about 1 inch below the soil surface. Maintain a pH between 6.2 and 6.7.

Blueberry Planting Tips IMPORTANT! A pH of 4.5 to 4.8 is required; 5.0 is too high! For best results, amend pH levels before planting and apply garden sulfur regularly. To establish plants successfully without prior pH adjustments, read our planting guide. Excessive sulfur can be toxic. Do not use leaves or sawdust as mulch. They inhibit hydration. Do not use fertilizer that contains potassium chloride. Do not fertilize at planting. Do not fertilize in late summer or early fall. This could lead to new growth, which is susceptible to winter injury and disease. Spacing: 4 to 5 feet in the row, with 8 to 12 feet between rows. Be careful not to plant too deeply.

What is the best time to plant? Don’t rush! Waiting until the soil is warmer, above 40 degrees, and drier is best. The biggest mistake growers make is planting in cold and muddy soil. As a rule, we recommend planting 1-2 weeks after the earliest date on the zone chart. We do not recommend fall planting. What do I do with the plants if I am not quite ready? Plants are easily stored in the bottom of the refrigerator up to 1 week after arrival. Keep plants in the shipping bags and keep the bags sealed. Call us to delay shipping by the Friday before they are scheduled to ship. 90% of all orders shipped are loaded Monday morning by 9am. Do not store below 28˚F. Can I pick up my plants? Orders can be picked up in Whately, MA, mid April through late May, Mon. through Fri., 8am to 5pm; Sat., 8am to 1pm. Call for other available times. What is Agri-gel? Agri-gel is a polymer that absorbs many times its weight in water. It helps all plants get established easier, it is especially helpful for raspberry plants. We include a sample in every shipment that is enough for 25 strawberry or raspberry plants. What is tissue culture? Tissue culture is a propagation method that ensures virus and disease free plants. Since 1980, all of our planting stock begins as virus and disease free micro-propagated cuttings. Why do Nourse Farms plants cost more? 99% of our plants are either first or second generation from our tissue culture facility. Our plants set the bar for health and vigor.

Fall Bearing (Ever bearing) varieties produce fruit on first-year canes and are usually mowed in the spring to produce a large fall crop.
Earliest ever bearing variety. Originated in Poland. At least three weeks earlier than Heritage, Polana allows you to grow fall varieties in more northern locations and still produce a great crop. Its berries are highly productive, large, glossy in appearance, coherent, with good flavor. Canes are vigorous and grow shorter than those of Heritage. Ripens early August in southern New England and late July in southern Wisconsin. In most cases, helps fill in the gap between the summer and the other fall varieties. A great choice for early fall raspberries. Polana needs extra fertilizer in May and June. Zones 3-8. 5 for $17.50 • 10 for $26.75 • 25 for $52.00

(Plant Patent Applied for) Niwot is the first primocane black raspberry. Introduced by Peter Tallman, a private breeder in Colorado, Niwot will produce berries in the fall, ripening in late August until frost. It will also produce a good floricane crop, ripening slightly earlier than Jewel depending upon location. Niwot is vigorous, highly productive, has attractive shiny fruit, and the berry is slightly larger or equal in size to Jewel. The flavor is reported to have less intensity than Jewel. As the variety is vigorous, it requires trellising and recommended spacing is 3 to 4 feet apart in the row. Niwot appears to have similar winter hardiness to Jewel. Grows best in zones 5-7. 5 for $24.50 • 10 for $41.00 • 25 for $91.00 NIWOT

POLKA
Trellising raspberries is one of the most important cultural practices, but most people think it is too expensive and time consuming. A simple post with twine could increase potential harvests by 50%. Prune summer raspberries soon after harvest ends. This will reduce disease pressure on new canes and increase production potentials. Don’t plant where raspberries were growing for at least 2-3 years. Don’t plant too deep. Read and keep our planting guide on hand. It will help you care for your raspberries for years to come.

Caroline* U.S. Plant Patent #10,412
U.S. Plant Patent #19,512 (‘RAFZAQU’ variety) Alternative for organic growers. Himbo Top™, a primocane red raspberry variety introduced in HIMBO-TOP 2008, has demonstrated high tolerance to Phytophthora root rot disease. This variety produces extremely large, firm, bright red fruit that does not darken. Berries have good flavor, are conic shaped, have small well-constructed drupelets and are easy to pick. For best results in commercial production, we recommend closely managing your cultural practices, especially water and plant density. This variety is extremely vigorous and will require less fertilizer. It ripens a few days later than Autumn Bliss. We feel Himbo Top™ has the potential to be the most productive of any variety we offer today. Zones 4-8. 5 for $18.75 • 10 for $28.75 • 25 for $56.00
BP-1 Raspberry* NEW FOR 2015! EXCLUSIVE! U.S. Plant Patent #22,459
BP-1 is a cross between POLKA and TULAMEEN developed by the Berry Plant Company in Italy. The fruit is very high quality, lighter in color than Polka, with excellent flavor attributed to the Tulameen parent. Plants are moderately vigorous, producing tall, upright canes. Its yield is higher than Polka. BP-1 is a primocane variety, but a floricane crop can also be harvested. The primocane crop is at approximately the same time as Caroline. The floricane crop is considered early. We highly recommend the BP-1 variety when production and berry quality is required. BP-1 is licensed exclusively to Nourse Farms, Inc. for North America. Plants are available for the 2015 planting season. 5 for $18.75 • 10 for $28.75 • 25 for $56.00
Most productive ever bearer. Caroline has a larger berry than Heritage and is more productive, with a rich, full and intense flavor. It is a very vigorous variety, with more tolerance for root rot than Heritage. It fruits earlier than Heritage; the farther south you grow it, the earlier it will ripen. Though it does not tolerate high heat and drought, Caroline is widely adapted, growing everywhere from the East Coast to the West Coast. Does not tolerate high heat and drought. Recommended for zones 4-7. 5 for $17.50 • 10 for $26.75 • 25 for $52.00
Heritage
Heirloom — recommended for beginners. Released by the Cornell Small Fruit Breeding Program. For many years this was the standard variety for production and high-quality fruit by which fall-bearing varieties were judged. The fall crop is highly productive and ripens from the end of August through October, depending on your location. The berries have good size, color and flavor. The fruit is good for jam and freezing and delicious for fresh use, too. Grows well in zones 4-8. 5 for $16.50 • 10 for $25.00 • 25 for $49.00

Plant Breeder Dr. John Clark, from the University of Arkansas, has released the following varieties. In northern areas, the development of these everbearing blackberries may allow production in some regions where other blackberry varieties are not winter hardy. After mowing the canes to the ground early in the spring (as with Heritage) the new growth produces flowers in August and berries in September. We recommend you plant trials of these new varieties to evaluate their performance at your location. Recommended for home gardeners and for local commercial production.

Summer Bearing Blackberries
BLACKBERRIES
Fall bearing blackberry canes respond favorably to tipping! Tip the primocanes at 12"–15" and again at approximately 30". Tipping encourages earlier fruit development and highest yield potential while keeping cane height in check for easier management and manual harvest.
This thornless variety has excellent quality fruit, with firm, sweet, attractive berries. Fruit ripens before Navaho. Winter hardiness appears to be less than Navaho, similar to Apache. Plant has very erect canes, and intermediate vigor. Plants also appear resistant to anthracnose, double blossom/ rosette and no orange rust has been seen on any plants. We highly recommended it for the MidAtlantic, West Coast and South based on excellent grower results. Best in zones 6-9. 5 for $23.50 • 10 for $38.75 • 25 for $85.75

U.S. Plant Patent #22,449 Prime-Ark® 45 is a thorny primocane-bearing blackberry with an erect growing habit. Fruit size is medium-large and trials indicate that Prime-Ark® 45 is much more productive than Prime Jim. Fruit holds up well after picking and is suitable for shipping. The floricane fruiting season is after Prime-Jim and Natchez and before Ouachita. Early indications are that the primocane crop ripens later than Prime-Jim. Ripening may be too late for some northern areas, but will extend the blackberry season in regions with a long enough growing season. We would recommend Prime Ark® 45 as an outstanding primocane-bearing blackberry. Grows best in zones 6-9. 5 for $24.50 • 10 for $41.00 • 25 for $91.00

★ Bluegold
Blueberries can last for several decades if the pH is below 5.0 and they are planted with wood chips. Following our directions in the planting guide will greatly contribute to your success. Mulch your blueberries every year with wood chips that are 3-6 months old. This will help keep weeds down and provide a great place for roots to grow. At maturity, six plants can feed a family of four for a year! Do not use softened water on blueberries. The salts will hurt the plants. Blueberries only utilize ammoniated forms of nitrogen. Do not use regular 10-10-10.

Millennium
Released from the asparagus breeding program of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, Millennium is establishing itself to be a high performing variety. Originally thought to be best adapted to heavier soils, various trials and results from our grower surveys indicate it is adapted to a wide range of soil types. In a North Carolina trial, accumulating six years of data, it was the second highest producer on a sandy soil site. In our trial, Millennium has been productive, with high quality spears, is tender and has good asparagus flavor. We highly recommend this variety. Zones 3-8. 25 for $27.00 • 50 for $47.50 • 100 for $77.50

Jersey Supreme
Long-term investment Asparagus, rhubarb and horseradish are all plantings that will continue to yield abundantly for 15 to 20 years if given the proper care. Get ahead of the game with our one-year-old asparagus roots, which meet the nursery standard for two-year-old crowns. Growers have been impressed at how these bigger crowns are jumping out of the ground sooner than others. The new hybrids resist fusarium crown rot and other diseases that weaken asparagus plants.
RHUBARB
This is a unique asparagus variety. Its attractive purple color, milder flavor and tenderness distinguish this variety from others. In addition, our trials indicate Purple Passion has productive yields. For best performance, plant spacing for Purple Passion is 6 to 8 inches apart in the row instead of the usual 12-inch spacing. When cooked, the bright purple color is reduced, but when served fresh in salads it provides a colorful and flavorful accent. Zones 3-8. 25 for $22.50 • 50 for $39.50 • 100 for $64.50
MacDonald Strain Limited Quantities
Cawood Delight Limited Quantities
This variety is not as vigorous as MacDonald, but has deeper red color and slightly thicker stalks. Cawood Delight has a stout growth habit that will excel in northern areas. It may struggle in areas with long periods of high heat. We have had a lot of positive feedback on this variety from commercial growers and home gardeners. Best in zones 4-7. 3 for $20.50 • 12 for $72.70
Jersey Knight
Originated in New Jersey. Jersey Knight is extremely vigorous, has large, succulent spears and quickly attracts a loyal following. The flavor is excellent, and the plant is resistant to rust, crown rot and fusarium. It also does better in heavy, clay-like soils. Zones 3-8. 25 for $22.50 • 50 for $39.50 • 100 for $64.50
Purple Passion
Rhubarb is very easy to grow. Plant 3 feet apart in well-prepared soil, with the top of the division level with the soil surface. Do not plant too deeply! When the plants are established, fertilize liberally with manure and garden fertilizer. For continued success, follow this procedure each fall and spring. A wellbalanced fertility program is necessary for optimum results. Soil pH should be 6.0-6.8.
This strain provides excellent production for commercial growers and home gardeners. This very vigorous, upright-growing strain produces large, tender stalks and has acceptable red color. Shows resistance to root-rot problems. Zones 4-8. 3 for $18.65 • 12 for $65.25
The newest release from the New Jersey breeding program. Adapted to temperate, warm and cool climates, field trials show Supreme to have a very high yield potential. Supreme is quite early and cold tolerant. The spear size is more uniform than other Jersey hybrids. It is best adapted to light- to mediumsandy soils. Supreme has demonstrated very good rust resistance and is noted for its tolerance to fusarium. Zones 3-8. 25 for $22.50 • 50 for $39.50 • 100 for $64.50

HORSERADISH ROOTS
Big Top
We have selected the strain Big Top for its size, vigor, wide adaptability and resistance to foliage diseases, rust and bacterial spot (all common problems in horseradish). These plants are top performers. A few roots will last a lifetime! Soil pH should be 6.0-6.8. Zones 4-8. 5 for $10.10 • 10 for $18.40
Pacific Purple
This variety was bred by Dr. Peter Falloon from Aspara Pacific in New Zealand. This new purple variety is high performing, producing higher yields than Purple Passion as well as many of the green varieties. It is unique in the way it holds a deep purple color through the season and it is very tender with a sweet flavor, distinctive from the green varieties. As Pacific Purple produces especially large-sized spears, we recommend planting the crowns 8 inches apart rather than at the usual 12 inch spacing. This practice will produce more normal-sized spears. We highly recommend this variety. Grows best in zones 3-8. 25 for $27.00 • 50 for $47.50 • 100 for $77.50

CURRANTS & GOOSEBERRIES
Tart, tasty, versatile ribes Admired for generations in Europe for their adaptability as plants and their versatility as food, currants and gooseberries – known collectively as ribes – are growing in popularity in this country. Gooseberries are good cooked, and eaten fresh. They offer a tasty alternative to grapes. Both make excellent jams. Currants, which make a refreshing juice, provide more vitamin C than fresh oranges. Ribes can handle long cold winters, and have excellent shelf-life. They can stay on the vine for up to two weeks, and store well in the refrigerator. RED CURRANTS

Plant currants and gooseberries in well-prepared, weed-free soil that contains at least 3% organic matter. Planting on a slight slope will facilitate cold air drainage. Avoid southern-facing slopes, since intense sun may injure the plants. Soil pH should be between 6.0 and 6.3. Set black currants 4 to 5 feet apart in the row. Black currant rows should be spaced no less than 5 feet apart; 8 to 9 feet apart is recommended for home gardeners, and up to 10 feet apart for machine harvesting for commercial production. Refer to the Nourse Planting Guide for spacing of red currants and gooseberries.
