A semester or year spent abroad as an exchange student is becoming a regular part of one’s university studies. It is also gaining more popularity to start professional career by doing traineeship abroad. Students can also study and do internship abroad using their own financial means, however it is much easier using the opportunities their home university has on hand. The following information will provide a brief overview of the possibilities that students at the University of Tartu (UT) have for enhancing their studies with time spent abroad.
How to become an exchange student

The Erasmus Programme Erasmus is higher-education sub-programme of Erasmus+ (2014-2020) proposed by the European Commission. Students of participating universities can study or do internship in all EU Member States as well as in Turkey, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Macedonia. Students may receive Erasmus grants for studying or being trained abroad totalling up to 12 months maximum per each level of study (according to the requirements of minimum periods – 3 months for studies and 2 for traineeship). Erasmus for studies Student exchange is based on bilateral agreements signed for specific study fields between the faculties/colleges of UT and academic units at partner universities. Competition usually takes place once a year in February/ March. If necessary, additional application round for spring semester is organised in early
autumn. The initial selection process is carried out by academic unit of UT, the final decision on accepting the student is made by the partner university. Erasmus for traineeship Students can apply for financial support if the internship will be used for fulfilling one’s study programme at UT and for the internship taking place 12 months after the graduation of the university. The traineeship can be made in higher education institutions, companies or other organisations (except EU institutions and diplomatic institutions of the student’s home country). Competition takes place twice a year and is announced by the International Student Service (ISS). Erasmus scholarship The programme provides free tuition at the partner university and a stipend (in most cases for one semester). The amount of the grant is determined separately each year. Keep in mind, that it does not cover all of the expenses abroad. Information is provided by the Erasmus Institutional Coordinator and Traineeship Coordinator at ISS as well as by Erasmus coordinators at UT faculties/colleges.

Currently UT has student exchange agreements with more than 30 partner universities in about 15 countries (see the table above). In most cases, students from all faculties can apply, unless a particular study field is not taught at the partner university. Students can study abroad without paying tuition fee and in many cases free accommodation in the dormitory, scholarship or free board is provided.

ISEP – International Student Exchange Programs ISEP is a world-wide network of 300 universities, with approximately half of them located in the United States.

Utrecht Network and Coimbra Group Coimbra Group Student Exchange Network (SEN) Students can apply to 21 participating universities from following countries: Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Switzerland. Exchange students are provided with free tuition at foreign universities. The competition usually takes place in March/April and it is coordinated by ISS. If necessary, additional competition for

Swiss-European Mobility Programme It is possible to apply for student exchange in Swiss universities on the basis of bilateral agreements of specific study fields. The competition takes place once a year in February/March,

Intergovernmental Scholarships Estonia has signed cooperation agreements for student exchange with following countries: Belgium, China, Israel,
Italy, Japan, Greece, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, France, Switzerland, Denmark, Czech Republic, Turkey and Hungary.
Students are guaranteed free tuition at a state university of their choice. Depending on the cooperation agree-
ment, a scholarship may also be provided. The application process is done through the Archimedes Foundation.

ESF DoRa and Kristjan Jaak Scholarship Programmes ESF DoRa and Kristjan Jaak scholarship programmes are coordinated by Archimedes and support student exchange for master´s and doctoral students as well as shorter visits abroad. Students can apply for the following through the ESF DoRa programme: a semester abroad for doctoral students (1-5 months) with the application process done through Archimedes, short visits (3-21 days) for master’s and doctoral students, with the
application process handled through one’s faculty or college. Students who hold Estonian long-term residence permit or are the citizens of EU and who speak Estonian can apply for the Kristjan Jaak scholarship. The application process is done through Archimedes. Three types of support are provided: full studies (studies for up to one year), partial studies (1-5 months), and short visits (3-21 days).
