BACK TO BASICS Dear Friends, Like many of our customers, vendors and other small businesses, Nova has faced a very challenging economic climate for the last few years. Between increasing regulation of small toy producers and the economic malaise that has gripped our country and the world, we have felt at times that we were just holding on. Nonetheless, hold on we have, and it is because of you and the wonderful craftspeople we work with that we still feel energized and hopeful about the future.

In the face of these difficulties, we have tried many different initiatives over the last couple of years to try to continue to grow and share with people the wonder of a childhood filled with natural products. To that end, we have sent out our catalog to rented lists, “prospecting” as it’s known in the industry. We’ve tried free shipping. We’ve tried discounting our products. All of these efforts have ultimately proven to be dead ends; except for the knowledge we’ve gained of how special you, our Nova customer, really are. And how do we know this? Because no matter how much we change, on average, you come to us yearly in the same numbers and spend the same amount with us—regardless of whether we offer discounts or free shipping or how many catalogs we send you. This tells us that you see the value of what we are providing and price is only a small part of it. And so we’ve decided that the time has come to get back to basics. Here’s what that means. SHIPPING: The reality is that there is no such thing as “Free Shipping.” Either the cost is rolled into the price of the product or other things are being scrimped on, like customer service, employee wages or working conditions. In the interest of transparency, we will not hide the cost of shipping, but will tell you what it is up front (or rather in back, as the shipping chart is at the back of the catalog) and let you decide if it seems reasonable and fair. PROMOTIONS/DISCOUNTS/SALES: We sell the same products year in and year out. Discounting a product today means having to order it again to sell to someone else at full price tomorrow. This underscores the main problem with discounting: Why should you be penalized for purchasing a product at the wrong time? We’d rather offer you a fair price every day. Occasionally we do put items on sale. These are almost always close-outs or new items that didn’t find a home at the full retail price. Almost without exception, we will not raise the price of an item once it’s been on sale. Fair pricing and transparent costs: this is our commitment to you. In a way, it’s also a commitment to ourselves. Running Nova in an unsustainable way, not recognizing the true costs of doing business, would mean we couldn’t be around to serve you.

Elves & Angels’ kitchens, produced by the Smalley family, have always been at the heart of Nova Natural. Susan Smalley shares her thoughts and the news from Maine, where they live… Elves & Angels isn’t just a name; it’s our family’s life together creating heirloom quality toys, ever since my husband David made the first Priscilla’s Kitchen 25 years ago. However, the seeds of our product line reach back further, to when we started a family 40 years ago. With a single income and a large family, David and I worked together and spent many hours making unique wooden toys for all of our children. Elves & Angels has grown up since we created that first kitchen. Our children, who once worked in our workshop, are now married with their own little ones to love. Our grandchildren now receive the gifts and test our new creations. Even though the seasons have turned and our children have grown, we approach each toy

with the same commitment to excellence as we did with our first. This year our eldest son, Jeremy, is assisting with some of the production at his workshop in Brandon, Vermont. Back on the farm in Maine, David continues to work on new designs—with my input of course—as well as continue to manufacture most of our products. We have some new creations to share. David has been thinking about ride-on toys for some time and this year he’s made two! Our new Rolling Horsie is a real beauty, with a timeless look that toddlers will love. Made of solid hardwood, its sleek design will stand the test of time and years of “hard riding.” And the Roly Poly is a fun scooting ride for smooth floors everywhere. This season also has a new version of Julianna’s Kitchen that includes an extra shelf and a “broiler oven” for chefs who want to brown the top of their next entrée! Updating the kitchen speaks to David’s love of design-

ing sturdy wooden toys; he is always thinking about what to make next and it is so satisfying to see one of his ideas take its physical form in wood in a short amount of time! As if by magic, it appeared: a little Big Top tent, set on a field surrounded by Vermont woods, its colorful pennants fluttering in the breeze and, inside, a small wooden ring, painted red. People from surrounding villages heard about the Big Top, and came to see what was happening. What they found was a small, one-ring circus. Performed by children. That was 1987, and the “little circus in the woods” has grown. Circus Smirkus, still based in Greensboro, VT, in Vermont’s rugged Northeast Kingdom, is now an internationally recognized, award-winning, traveling youth circus that tours the Northeast each summer, performing nearly 70 shows in 15 cities and towns.

The attractions are many: the colorful, striped Big Top (the third in Smirkus history), the original, live music, the colorful costumes…not to mention the popcorn and cotton candy! But the real reason that Circus Smirkus attracts an annual audience of nearly 50,000 is that the stars are kids, ages 10 to 18. They perform as jugglers, clowns, aerialists, wire-walkers, acrobats and more. And, along the way, they inspire audiences with living proof that the impossible is, in fact, possible. How do they do it? You have probably guessed: it’s not “magic.” Circus Smirkus involves the hard work of countless grownups: coaches, counselors, cooks, and crew. And it requires, more than anything else, that the 30 young performers selected each year from around the country and the world be dedicated to doing the best possible show they can. As diaboloist Al Mireault, a young man from Waterbury Center, VT who is now a freshman at M.I.T., once explained: “You practice and practice. And then you practice some more.” In fact “Try, try again.” is part of the “circus secrets” that Smirkus residency artists share with children when they travel to a school with a Smirkus “Ringmaster Residency” or after-school program. It’s one of the messages that coaches at the Circus Smirkus Summer Camp impart to their young charges. And it’s what the young performers in the Big Top Tour have done in order to obtain a coveted slot on tour. And it’s amazing what these young people can do when they try. Whether it’s a third grader learning to juggle scarves, a summer camper balancing on a wire, or a Smirkus Big Top performer flipping on a trapeze high above the audience, it’s a triumph of dedication, teamwork, trust, and sheer fun.
