Teleport City: a modernidade em sua mais radical condição Ao supor a invenção do teletransporte, Gabriela Bílá tece uma reflexão sobre o tempo e o espaço. Não só a informação circula instantaneamente em escala planetária, mas também a matéria e as pessoas. Um mundo sem fronteiras promete as mais fantásticas experiências, tais como iniciar o dia com um café em um bistrô em Paris e terminá-lo em um restaurante em Tóquio, bastando a proximidade a uma cabine de teletransporte. As possibilidades de desenraizamento não se dariam impunemente, o corpo humano tem suas exigências. O deslocamento instantâneo poderia induzir ao estado de vigília, com consequências para a saúde. Novas síndromes surgiriam, a exemplo das pessoas cujas vidas se restringiriam ao período noturno: de fuso em fuso, elas eliminariam o sol de suas vidas. Uma tal mobilidade modificaria as relações com a alteridade, recrudescendo xenofobias, apagando as diferenças culturais do pequeníssimo planeta Terra. Máquinas clandestinas de teletransporte colocariam em risco as vidas de quem as utilizasse – afinal, pretendendo ir para um ponto do planeta, poder-se-ia, num milionésimo de segundo, encontrar-se no centro de um conflito. Este mundo de radical modernidade adquire materialidade em “Teleport City”, traduz-se em cartografias inéditas, objetos para o enfrentamento dos deslocamentos, novas formas de morar e transformações do espaço urbano. Bílá surpreende ao romper os limites do mundo material, para vislumbrar aspectos do mundo social, como por exemplo movimentos pela defesa do ciclo biológico da vida humana entre outras cingidas por sua imaginação. A linguagem de Teleport City transpõe coerentemente as hipóteses nele implícitas: modelos tridimensionais dão a ver o mundo constituídos por um mosaico de paisagens. Projeções e o acender e o apagar de luzes conferem unidade entre conteúdo e forma e nos convencem das propostas de Gabriela Bílá. Atenção: nesta viagem, apertar os cintos é um ato inútil!

[Teleport City : Modernity in its most radical condition] By supposing the invention of teletransportation, Gabriela Bílá weaves a reflexion about time and space. Not only does the information circulate instantaneously on a global scale, but so do people and matter. A world without borders promises the most fantastic of experiences, such as beginning the day with a cup of coffee in a café in Paris and ending it in a restaurant in Tokyo, the proximity of a teleport booth being the only requirement. These uprooting possibilities wouldn’t occur unpunished, the human body having its exigencies. Instantaneous displacement could induce on the waking state, with consequences on one’s health. New syndromes would emerge, like the ones of people whose lives are restringed to night-time: from time zone to time zone, they would eliminate the sun from their lives. Such a mobility would modify relations with alterity, increasing xenophobia, erasing cultural differences on the our tiny planet Earth. Clandestine teleport machines would put the lives of their users at risk -in the end- wishing to go from one place on the planet to another, one could, in a nanosecond, end up in the middle of a conflict. This world of radical modernity acquires substance in “ Teleport City “ it translates into unprecedented cartography, subjects to the confrontation of displacements, new ways of living and the transformation of urban space. Bílá surprises us by breaking the limits of the material world, foreseeing aspects of the social world, such as movements for the defense of the biological cycle of human life among others suggested by her imagination. The language used in Teleport City translates coherently the hypotheses implicit in its concept: tri-dimentional models let us see a world formed by a mosaic of landscapes. Projections and the switching on/off of lights give unity between the content and form, and, thus, convince us of Gabriela Bílá’s proposals. Beware! TelePods As cabines públicas de teleportação são padronizadas mundialmente, assim os pods são facilmente encontrados em qualquer paisagem. É possível escolher o destino por coordenada, fuso, clima, atividade e muitas outras opções. The teleport public cabins are standardized worldwide, so the pods are easily found in any landscape. It is possible to choose your destination by coordinates, time zone, climate, activities, and many other options.

Cartografia do desejo O mundo não é mais representado por distâncias geográficas. Nos novos mapas, os interesses individuais são sobrepostos à proximidade física. Por exemplo, a Avenida Paulista pode conectar-se diretamente a Quinta Avenida, muito mais próxima agora do que qualquer rua da zona norte de São Paulo. [The cartography of desire] The world is not divided by its geographical distances anymore. On the new maps, individual interest overlaps physical proximity. For instance, Avenida Paulista can directly connect to the 5th Avenue, much closer now than any other street from Sao Paulo’s north zone.

Linha do tempo da evolução dos meios de transporte e a transformação da malha urbana, até o desaparecimento das ruas. [Speed and the streets] Timeline of means of transportation evolution and the transformation of the urban fabric, until its disappearance.

Quando as ruas não são necessárias para o transporte elas abrigam novos usos. Em muitos pontos do planeta as antigas estradas e avenidas abriram espaço para hidrografias artificiais e florestas urbanas. [The Venice Effect] When streets are no longer necessary for transportation, they serve other purposes. In many places on the planet, former roads and avenues give space to artificial watercourses and urban forests.

Colmeias A disseminação do teletransporte significou a obsolescência de toda a infraestrutura rodoviária. Em algumas partes do mundo as ruas foram tomadas por edificações, o que originou a tipologia urbana das colmeias, uma extrusão da malha viária. Garantindo a iluminação e ventilação para os edifícios internos, foi adotada uma altura máxima para toda a colmeia, o que permite que seu topo seja caminhável. É como o próprio percurso das antigas cidades, mas, dessa vez, experimentado de cima. [Beehives] The spreading of teleport means the obsolescence of the entire road system. In some parts of the world, streets are taken over by buildings, which give birth to the urban typology of beehives, an extrusion of the urban fabric. In order to guarantee natural lighting and air circulation to internal buildings, a maximum height has been established for the whole beehive, which allows people to walk its rooftops. Just like walking in the city, but experienced from above.

O nome dessa tipologia urbana referese a um grid que serve de suporte para edifícios com as mais diversas formas e funções. Lado a lado estão moradias, comércio, escolas, fábricas... Esses edifícios anexados ao grid das estantes possuem circulação interna física, como escadas e elevadores, mas a externa se dá pelos telepods. Assim, não existem conexões entre os prédios e, portanto, não é necessário que existam ligações culturais entre seus habitantes ou setorização de funções. O cotidiano desenvolve-se em saltos de ponto em ponto, não obrigatoriamente adjacentes, por isso as estantes distanciam-se do antigo conceito de “cidade”.
[Shelf city] This term of urban typology refers to a grid which sustains buildings in a variety of shapes and functions. Side by side there are habitations, shops, schools, factories… There are circulation areas within these buildings, such as lifts and escalators, but the access to other buildings linked within the shelf grid is through telepods. Since there are no connections between buildings, there is no need to have any shared cultural backgrounds between its inhabitants nor the separation into specific function zones. Daily life evolves in leaps between two points, not necessarily adjacent, therefore shelves distance themselves from the outdated concept of “city”.

[Drifting apps] To urban explorers, some apps might help one navigating while wandering when streets no longer exist in most parts of the world and physical interconnections between buildings are rare. There are those who spend hours, days and even months leaping from room to room. Aim your reader to the landscape and receive the access codes to any pod nearby.

Arquipélagos Telepods particulares permitem habitações em áreas remotas do mundo, possibilitando que seus moradores saiam para suas atividades diárias. Fortemente vinculados à natureza, os arquipélagos são ocupados sazonalmente e assim abandonados e repovoados ciclicamente. [Archipelagos] Private telepods allow people to live in remote regions of the world and still attend their daily activities. Being strongly connected to nature, the archipelagos are seasonally inhabited, in a cycle of vacancy and reoccupation.
Para casas com telepods recomenda-se preparar uma sala 25 graus logo na entrada. Ela ajuda na climatização dos moradores recém-chegados de outros hemisférios, além de facilitar a identificação do lar. Decore esse cômodo com objetos de valor emocional significativos. Experimente também deslocar os núcleos móveis de banho e cozinha. Água e esgoto são transportados fora de tubulações e as zonas molhadas da casa podem virar mobília. [Home] To houses equipped with telepods it is recommended to set a 77ºF Room at the entrance. It helps acclimatizing newcomers from the other hemisphere, as well as recognizing home. Decorate this room with valuable emotional objects. Try also reallocating the kitchen and bathroom mobile units. Since water and sewage systems are outside pipes, former wet areas of the house might become new furniture.
Taps become portable thanks to minipods linked to the water system.

Ciclos A possibilidade de passear entre fusos horários dissolveu a contagem do tempo. A rotação da Terra e suas 24 horas não são mais obrigatórias. A extensão de um dia agora é uma escolha individual, que esbarra apenas nos limites do corpo. O cotidiano está pulverizado entre fusos. [Cycles] The possibility of travelling among different time zones has dissolved the traditional perceptions of time-passing. Earth rotation and its 24 hours are no longer mandatory. Day extension is an individual choice, conditioned only by the limits of the human body. Everyday life is scattered between time zones.

Conservadores Movimentos que tentam recuperar os modos tradicionais de vida surgem a cada instante. Um deles é pela volta da experiência espacial percebida por meio da velocidade, a volta dos carros. Acredita-se que o teletransporte seja causador de danos irreversíveis à alma dos que dele fazem uso. [Conservatives] Reactionaries gathered to demand the comeback of old habits. One of them is the spatial interaction experienced through speed, the cars comeback. They believe that teleportation is the cause of irreversible damage to the soul of ones who use it.

A necessidade de caminhada é mínima, apenas até o pod mais próximo. Pulando de cabine em cabine, a noção das distâncias não passa da escala dos metros e a percepção do mundo com o efeito da velocidade deixou de acontecer. O borrão de movimento se tornou retrô no mundo do eterno agora. Os Speeding Rooms são uma febre, atraindo muitos visitantes nostálgicos pelo antigo mundo de km/h que nunca experimentaram.
Nostalgia
The need for walking is minimal, only up to the nearest pod. Jumping from booth to booth, the notion of distances doesn’t go beyond the scale of meters, and the perception of the world with the effect of speed doesn’t occur anymore. Motion blur is vintage in the world of the eternal now. Speeding Rooms are trendy, attracting many visitors nostalgic of the old world of mi/h which they have never experienced.
Guerrilhas de centro histórico Guerrilhas armadas mantêm partes de cidades sem conexão aos telepods. Esses grupos pregam a defesa dos centros históricos e suas culturas locais, que julgam ameaçadas pelas constantes interações provocadas pelo teletransporte. Algumas guerrilhas garantem a subsistência com o exótico que ainda conseguem manter. Visitas guiadas são organizadas periodicamente para quem não se importa com perigo. [Historic Centre Guerrillas] Guerrilla warfare groups keep downtown sites out of reach of telepod access. These groups preach the preservation of historic centres and their local culture, believed to be threatened by the intense interactions promoted by teleport. Some guerrillas survive due to exotic features they’re still able to maintain. Guided tourist visits are organized periodically for the curious ones who don’t fear danger.

[The dailies / The nighters] People who teleport through time-zones in order to live exclusively during the day or night. The syndrome is usually associated to those who fear endings or new beginnings.
Acumuladores culturais O medo da perda de identidade individual provocada pelas constantes interações entre culturas faz com que alguns indivíduos criem compulsão em acumular objetos, linguagens e até trejeitos característicos de vários locais do mundo. [Cultural hoarders] The fear of losing one’s identity generated by constant cultural interactions leads a few people to compulsively collect characteristic objects, languages and even manners from different corners of the world.

Síndrome do mundo plano Grande sentimento de vazio ao se exaurirem as possibilidades de explorar novos locais do planeta. É a percepção de que o mundo é finito e a sensação de ser, dentro dele, um prisioneiro. [Flat world syndrome] Feeling of general emptiness due to the exhaustion of possibly unseen places on the planet. It is the perception of the world as finite and the sensation of imprisonment inside it.
[The Gap] Fear of individual annihilation by teleport.
A ideia de desmaterializar-se em um ponto para reintegrar-se em outro é compreendida por alguns como a extinção do “eu” por frações de segundo. Aquele que vai para o outro lado seria apenas um simulacro da identidade original? The idea of being disintegrated in a spot to be reintegrated in another is seen by some as the extinction of the “being” for fractions of second. Is the teleported passenger only a simulacrum of one’s true self?

Arquitetura e urbanidade são bases da expressão plástica da sua produção, que faz uso de novas mídias e tecnologias para pensar a cidade. Gabriela Bilá (Brasília, 1990). Multimedia artist and graduated architect from FAU UnB, she takes inspiration for her work from discussions on contemporary cities aspects. Architecture and urbanity are the basis from which her plastic expression production evolves, thinking the city through the use of new media and technologies.
