THINKING ABOUT WHERE TO RETIRE? I chose to retire to Puerto Vallarta in Mexico in 2010, and have not regretted it for a minute. I can hear you already, “why would you want to retire there? The drugs and the killings and the abject poverty.” I have lived in the mountains of Colorado, the beaches of Fort Lauderdale and loved them both. Now here in PV, as it is called by the locals, I have the ocean and the mountains.

Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Carl’s Jr., Dominoes and Pizza Hut, for the people who need their quick fix of fast food. Or you can go to the corner! At almost any corner you can find the neighborhood taco stand. Also we have a store called OXXO, the Mexican substitute for 7-11. And they are everywhere. Almost anything you want you can find here…oh yeah, we have a Home Depot, Office Depot, Radio Shack, and GNC.

A growing city, Puerto Vallarta’s population is close to 300,000. Ten percent of which are expats, i.e. Americans, Canadians, and Europeans who have moved and live here on a full time basis. Some still maintain their homes in their countries of origin; however, many have sold their homes and moved here permanently. I have done that, and continue to go back to the USA to visit family and friends.

In my area of expertise, Real Estate, the most amazing thing about Puerto Vallarta is the availability, throughout the year, of excellent opportunities either in rentals and sales of condos and homes. The conditions for foreign retirees to buy real estate in Puerto Vallarta are at their best. The process is guaranteed and a law firm does it. Prices vary. You can still get deals starting from US$75,000 for condos with 1 bedroom and from US $89,000 for homes.

The hospitality of the Mexicans is outstanding. The people are very nice and happy. Surprisingly, many of them speak English and enjoy conversing in English. The cost of living is far cheaper than the US or Canada. However, gasoline is not. Groceries are similar in price to what you pay in the USA. Puerto Va l l a r t a h a s 2 Wa l - M a r t ’s , a Woolworth’s, Costco, McDonald’s,

If you were considering a move from your home country at any time or after you retire, come to Puerto Vallarta, México and see if you think you would be happy here.
