THE HISTORY OF SAN FRANCISCO MINT By Gregg Wagner THIRD SAN FRANCISCO MINT (1937)

The Granite Lady had become to small and out of date by 1937. A third structure was built about a mile away and became operational in 1937. The 3rd Mint is located on Duboche Street featuring state of the art coin machinery. The building is 208 ft by 185 ft with three floors and the front of the building has an extra two floors. In 1955 circulating coinage was suspended from San Francisco for 13 years. The current San Francisco Mint produces Clad and Silver Proof Sets as well as Commemorative coins as authorized by Congress. In 1968 it took over Proof coinage production from Philadelphia. In 2012 it struck America the Beautiful Quarters marked with an “S” for collectors. From 1962 to 1988 the Mint was an Assay office. It is located at 155 Hermann Street. It admits visitors on rare exception with last time on March 31st 1988. It needs all the space for coining machines. Little is known about how the inside appears and its arrangement.

Fractional California Gold (1852 - 1881) Fractional gold coins were made by jewelers and available in 25 cents, 50 cents, and $1 dollar. Many different designs and were made by California jewelers. Coins are graded by NGC or PCGS only. Over 450 different varieties are known to exist. Most are anonymous or have initials only. Most made in San Francisco and Leavenworth, Kansas with a few made in New York city and New Orleans. Fractionals were made by the hammer method and usually were underweight. THE LATIN INSCRIPTIONS ON THE COLONIAL COINS OF POTOSI By Ariel Kwacz

Being that Florida has such a large population hailing from Latin America, it is important to highlight its rich collectible history.

The administration of the Mint was in charge of the President of the Royal Audience of Charcas, who in turn, held the position of Superintendent. An inspection was carried out annually by two members of the Cabildo de Potosi or by officials of the Royal Treasury. In this regard, King Philip II, by Royal Decree of November 20, 1578, ordered that the inspection be carried out by the Oidor of the Royal Audience of Charcas.

The Latin Inscriptions on the Colonial Coins of Potosi. Part I. COBS OR MACUQUINAS Potosi, 1545, or perhaps 1547, an Indian named Diego Thualca, or Huallpa, discovered, by a quirk of fate, the Cerro Rico de Potosi'. The legend end here; the reality is that the history of money, the economy and in general, universal history, as we know it, would be different if the silver of Potosi had not existed. The influence exerted by Potosi and the Spanish monetary system is of such importance that the format of dividing the currency into eight (reales) is maintained until today, to the point that the New York Stock Exchange divides the shares into eighths. The discovery of Potochi, according to Baquijano; Putunsi, silver spout in the Native Aymara; of a mountain of 6,000 Castilian rods above sea level, communicated by Huallpa of Chumpivilcas to Huanca and by this to his encomendero, the Captain Juan de Villaroel of Medina del Campo, caused an immigration of great magnitude towards the skirts of the hill, making the city the largest in America, and only surpassed worldwide at the time, by London and Paris. It is estimated that of the total amount of silver extracted by Spain from America during the colony, half came from Potosi, and that it was enough to make a belt around the globe, of the diameter of an 8 reales coin, crossing the Equator and another of Meridian, with 9,000 leagues of circumference each. The monetary history of Upper Peru begins when Viceroy Toledo authorizes the construction of a Mint, in the city of La Plata, today Sucre – administrative Capital of Bolivia -, by order of King Philip II between 1572 and 1573 with machinery brought by mules and llamas from Lim. The reason was that the deposits were closer to the Casa de Moneda de Lima, founded in 1565. Since even so the silver paste was closer to Potosi than to La Plata, the House moved to the new city, founding the Casa De Moneda in 1574, date on which the first minting proofs were sent to Spain for royal approval. The Mint was installed in the southern part of the Plaza del Regocijo, in a place called El Pedregal, in front of the Cathedral, in a place belonging to the Cajas Reales de la Villa Imperial.

The first coins struck in Potosi, between 1575 and 1773, bore the name of Macuquinas, a word that comes from the Quechua "Makkaikunas" which means beaten or hammered, since this was the technique used for the minting of the coins. It is due to this procedure and the speed in which it was carried out that the shape was irregular, and the design blurred. It is worth noting that the pieces that were sent to the king, viceroy, or other members of the royal court, were minted in perfectly selected blanks and with extreme care, today called Royal strikes, and are extremely rare and high priced. The first design shows on the obverse, the Coat of Arms of the Habsburg family, reigning in Spain at that time. On each side we find the initials of the assayer, who oversaw the measuring of purity of the metal used; and the mark of the Mint of Potosi, the letter "P". In addition, you can see the face value of the piece (eight, four, two or one real) according to its size and weight. It is with these first coins that we can see the first Latin inscription "PHILIPPVS (with two "P”) D.G. HIPANIARVM". The reverse shows the Cross of Jerusalem, with castles and lions rampant in the four quarters of the cross, and the rest of the inscription: "ET INDIARVM REX" - Philip, Divine grace, King of Spain and the Indies -, becoming the first Spanish King to appear in the legends of the Potosi coins. The son of Emperor Charles V of Germany, I of Spain. When Philip II died, he was succeeded by his son, Philip III. The designs of the coins throughout the reign of the new monarch remained identical to those used during the time of his father, with the difference that in the legend appears the name of the king with two "L" as opposed to the two "P" of the previous ones. An important innovation is introduced during the reign of Philip III and was the introduction of the minting date from 1615. 6

THE LATIN INSCRIPTIONS ON THE COLONIAL COINS OF POTOSI By Ariel Kwacz The coins of Philip IV, son of Philip III and Margaret of Austria, began to be produced in 1630, 9 years after the beginning of his reign. Until 1650, the designs were identical to the previous ones, varying in the inscription the name of the king, which this time appears as "PHILIPVS” without any repeated letter.

Philip V decided to abdicate in January 1724 in favor of his son with Maria Luisa Gabriella of Savoy, Louis I. A peculiarity is that in 1727, coins were still being struck with the name of King Louis I who died less than a year after assuming the throne. Philip V reigns again upon the death of Louis I. The fourth son of Philip V and Maria Luisa of Savoy, Ferdinand VI is enthroned on the death of his father. The coins struck during his reign of thirteen years are identical to the previous ones with the difference that these coins do not bear any legend, except for "PLUS ULTRA" within the Pillars of Hercules.

By Royal Decree of February 17, 1651, the change in the designs of the coins throughout Spain and the Indies was mandated. On the obverse of the new coin, we find the Cross of Jerusalem with rampant lions and castles occupying the quarters of the Cross. The reverse shows crowned Pillars of Hercules over waves. In the middle of these is the Latin inscription “PLUS ULTRA” which means that the Spanish domains go beyond Europe, since in classical mythology, the Columns represented the end of the known world. This shows the importance, firmness, and stability of the Spanish Crown. Another of the changes imposed was the union of the inscription that appeared divided in the previous pieces, in a single phrase on the obverse, deleting the word "INDIARVM", on the reverse appears the inscription “POTOSI ANO (date) EL PERV”, alluding that this Mint belonged to the Viceroyalty of Peru based in Lima. Philip IV's son, Charles II, was the last king of the Habsburg dynasty that ruled Spain, because, although he married twice, he was never able to produce an heir. The coins struck during his reign, from 1665 (at four years of age) to 1700, are identical to the previous ones with the only change in the king's name: "CAROLVS". At his death, and by testamentary disposition of the latter, he named as heir to the Crown of Spain, Philip V, son of Louis, Dauphin of France and Anne Marie of Bavaria, and grandson of King Louis XIV of France. After the bloody War of Succession between 1701 and 1713, the Peace of Utrecht was signed, with which Philip V was ratified on the Spanish throne, with the condition of renouncing his French. Thus begins the reign of the Bourbon Dynasty, of French origin, in Spain, which. The coins struck for Philip V until 1724 continued to use designs like the previous ones, as well as the inscriptions. It is interesting to note the fact that for the proclamation of Philip V in Buenos Aires, the people were presented with Potosi minted coins that were shaped like hearts, these were also offered by the faithful to the saints of their devotion, today being extremely rare.

However, Fernando VI greatly contributed to the minting of coins in the colonial realms in America, as he ordered the minting of more perfect coins, eliminating cobs or macuquinas from every mint, except for Potosi. The reason for this was to maintain the status of wealth attributed to the city and to the fact that coins were hammered by hand and not really struck with machinery, as the mint had been doing for almost 200 years. In is important to note that Potosi cobs from this period are extremely crude, and date identification is key for their attribution. Among the important acts dictated by Fernando VI in monetary matters can be identified the Royal Decree of December 13, 1750, which ordered that the Mint of Potosi, as well as those of Mexico and Lima become part of the Crown of Spain, naming José María Caballero assayer in Potosi. Philip V and Isabella Farnese were parents of another King of Spain, Charles III. The importance that this King had in the minting of coins of Potosi is transcendental. From 1760 macuquinas were minted, without any legend, similar to those of Fernando VI, until 1763. Charles III launched a first monetary reform, which eliminated the cobs in the Americas, even for the Mint of Potosi. TO BE CONTINUED…
