The project asks for the design of a space that embodies the qualities of sustainable design, where nature and humans coexist. The proposal was to design a new mini town that caters to visitors of Ketam Quarry at Pulau Ubin. Inspired by the mountain biking park that surrounds the quarry, the town is designed to give the visitor the experience of adrenaline, with more narrow and undulating spaces at the beginning of the trial, to a wider more soothing commercial space at the end.

In order to bring the activity to the quarry while retaining the peace and tranquility, the granite wall opposite the viewing point would be blasted, creating an indent below the water level.

Embracing the Green
Year: Module:
2014 Year 2 Term 6, 20.103 Architecture Core Studio 3
Instructor: Jackson Tan Location: Kampong Java Road Type: Residential Development
The task was to design a development at Kampong Java Road that consists of residential, commercial and communal spaces. The site is currently used as a transition space or a short cut to get from the Newton Food Centre to the condominiums at the other side. The site is unique as it is not common to be able to find such a large plot of green in the Newton area at this day and age. Hence, the concept behind this design is to embrace the greens by integrating the building with the existing trees on site, weaving around and over them to make the site virtually unaltered.

The ground floor consists of commercial spaces situated around the perimeter of the trees. The walkways are designed such that visitors would get to experience being immersed in the forestry regardless which pathway they take, allowing them a momentary separation from the busy surroundings.

The concept of embracing the greens follows through as the visitor goes up the building. On level 8, there is an open communal deck where gatherings and functions can be held. The loft apartments on level 12 are unique as residents have to walk along a bridged corridor to get to their unit, which allows them to be in close proximity to the surrounding green.

The residential block was designed to mimic the water of the Jurong lake, which is in close proximity to the site. The building blocks are strategically designed to face away from direct sunlight while maximizing the good views for the residents. There are 2 easily accessible communal skybridges that join the two blocks together on the 7th and 13th floor.

“New Sustainable Housing Mass is a studio that introduces a new way to explore and experiment, through a complete design project, advanced typologies and structures together with contemporary sustainable solutions, dedicated to live in dense and tropical conditions. In this studio, the task was to design a residential establishment that embraced the characteristics of a prairie.

The chosen precedent image shows two curious children exploring the mysterious prairie, going through and stepping over the weeds. Hence, the concept is to allow the residents of this development to experience the interiority, porosity, verticality and fragility of the prairie be it amongst the buildings or in the apartments. The form of the buildings were also inspired by the ripple effect visible when the wind blows on the prairie. Interiority

The project asks for the design of a living repository in the context of Singapore’s 50th anniversary in 2015, showcasing artifacts that shaped the country’s identity over time and provide insights to its possible future trajectory located on a site in High Street. This building aims to narrate Singapore’s history to visitors of this museum by the superimposition of historical images on current existing views.

Perforated images of olden day Singapore would be strategically placed at locations of the building where heritage sites can be seen. Hence as a visitor looks out towards these directions, a superimposition of olden day Singapore would appear before the visitor’s eyes, giving the visitor an experience of what Singapore looked like in the past.

The envelope opens up more at places where there are significant views, and gets denser at the other places. Some of the holes created from the voranoid pattern is covered up, creating privacy and shade at some corners of the building. Hence, the envelope has three functions - It acts as a shading device, creates spatial experience by controlling privacy and openness in the building, and is also a design exhibit itself.

The Pendent Gallery Year: Module:

Instructor: Keith Goh Location: SUTD Dover campus Type: Gallery

The task was to design an interstitial space that will facilitate new forms of activity and continuity in the SUTD Dover campus. Sited in the building’s central courtyard, the project asks for the addition of a performance and exhibition space as well as a number of related programs. In attempt to free up the space at the ground level (which is heavily used for events and transiting from the east and west terrace, the concept behind this gallery is to use cantilevering and suspension to create a hovering and hanging effect.

The main gallery is the most public space in the gallery, where the bigger exhibits are placed. It also shares the space with the lobby and seminar reception area. The suspension language is also translated in this gallery, where the steel rods puncture the gallery from the bottom where there are access to the pendant spaces below.

The Safe House Year: Module:
2014 Year 2 Term 6, 20.103 Architecture Core Studio 3
Instructor: Jackson Tan Location: Bras Basah complex Type: HDB duplex unit (Interior architecture)

This project allowed students to create their own client profile and redesign the interior of a duplex HDB unit following the demands of this client you have created. Located within the arts ribbon at Bras Basah Road, the apartment is surrounded by many educational and inspirational places for young ones to visit. Hence, the concept is to create a safe, fun and inspirational house for a couple and 4 of their foster children.
By playing with evels, the boundaries between private and semiprivate spaces are blurred. Private pods can only be accessed by going through the kids’ bedrooms. This is to give the kids a sense of belonging and privacy, while still being open for the foster parents to keep an eye on.
