Miranda Lambert may sing about revenge, but the self-professed Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s ultimate payback has been her success: She’s released three hit albums and in 2010, earned nine CMA Award nominations – the most for any female artist in CMA history. She tied that record in 2014. The Texas native, who competed on season 1 of Nashville Star, turned her third-place finish on the TV singing competition into a full-blown country music career. In 2005, Lambert released her first studio album, Kerosene, which topped the country charts, earned her a Grammy nomination and established her as one of country’s leading ladies. Now with five No. 1 albums and a Grammy under her belt, the singer with the ‘bad-ass’ attitude channeled her inner girly-girl for her May 2011 nuptials to fellow country star Blake Shelton. Fresh off her summer Platinum Tour, CMA Entertainer of the Year nominee Miranda Lambert recently announced her upcoming Certified Platinum Tour. The Philadelphia Inquirer proclaimed ‘Miranda Lambert works the same thematic turf about growing up and growing older in rural America as her (almost entirely male) competitors atop the country charts. She just does it way better than they do.’ For more Miranda Lambert, go to nowitsdarkmag.com

The Arts: REBECCA IBEL the pizzuti collection
As part of on on-going monthly
series focusing on the Columbus Pizzuti Collection, Now It’s Dark talks with Director/Curator Rebecca Ibel about her history, pathway to the Pizzuti, the artwork, the public interface and hopes for the future.
NID: Please tell us a bit about your upbringing, education and overall background. RI: I was born in Columbus and moved to Northern California as a child. I studied art history at the American University of Paris. My first job was at Sotheby’s in New York, working in the print department. NID: What led you to open your gallery in 1993 and what was that experience like for so many years? RI: My husband and I left New York after the Berlin Wall came down to live in Berlin. I began my own art exhibitions, which eventually led me to starting my own exhibition space. While Berlin is an exciting city, it was not for me and I moved back to Columbus and opened my gallery. NID: Please tell us how your decided to migrate from your gallery to curating the Pizzuti collection. What was logistically involved between you and Ron Pizzuti? RI: Ron had been talking about opening a space to show his collection for many years. This was an exciting proposition for me, a new creative challenge. The transition was not complicated, I closed the gallery and started working on launching the Pizzuti Collection... For more Rebecca Ibel, go to nowitsdarkmag.com The Pizzuti Collection is located at 632 N. Park St. in the Short North. For more information, call 614-280-4004 or go to pizzuticollection.org.

hen we think of holiday parties, some of these usual edible
suspects come to mind: caviar, smoked salmon, deviled eggs. There is a reason why we often see these tasty protagonists in many holiday spreads. Sounds like your guests may be in for a real treat, also considering that both avocados and caviar are known aphrodisiacs. The former thanks to its pear shape and creamy flesh and the latter in part due to its high zinc content.

craft beer conundrum solved, sweeties by Kelly Rousculp
I
am notoriously indecisive – painfully so, according to my
boyfriend. It’s not that I don’t care, but the opposite; some decisions require careful consideration. What to wear? What to eat for dinner? What to watch on TV? While these classic conundrums can slip me up from time to time, they are no match for my most problematic regular decision – what beer to get? I find myself in the same situation every time: I’m at the grocery and I’ve picked up everything else on my list except the beer.
by Ria Greiff
I didn’t speak a word of this amazing affair to anyone. I was barely lucky enough to discover it myself. But trolling the interwebs is a ‘hobby’ of mine (and I am sure everyone else’s on this planet almost) and I stumbled upon this event while I was surfing one fine day. I wasn’t the only one. This was a sold out happening. It doesn’t take a ton of math skills to realize that there was tremendous value in a ten dollar ticket for a cocktail free-for-all. And we aren’t talking Jaeger bombs and Kamikazees. These are the greatest handcrafted cocktails from the crème de la crème bartenders in the business. I enter the gorgeous vestibule at the Hilton and my first turn is a wrong one and I end up at Latina night also happening there... For more Cocktail Takeover, go to nowitsdarkmag.com
Perhaps I save the beer for last, because I know the dilemma that awaits? No matter. I will hem and haw in the beer aisle for what seems like an eternity, even to me. I inspect every bottle that I’ve never seen before; I read the description, check the ABV and IBU, critique the label design – I may even google search the beer for ratings. And then finally after much deliberation, I pick up two sixpacks, because choosing only one is impossible. The first time I saw a ‘build your own six pack’ display at a store a few years ago, I approached with caution, understanding my propensity for waffling. But to my surprise and contrary to logic and reason, this increasingly popular store feature has helped me significantly reduced my time spent picking out beer. Instead of taking ages to make a selection, I can quickly once-over the bottled offerings, select six different beers and be on my way. Sure, one or two of the beers may not be great, but that’s OK. The ‘build your own’ phenomenon is great for beer snobs and newbies alike, with the ultimate benefit being that you can expose yourself to a variety of beers without the commitment of the entire six-pack. That being said, I’ve reviewed and ranked six different brews that I recently picked up at Viking Premium Beverage, with a Christmas, but not Christmas Ale theme in mind. The beers are ranked from least to most enjoyable... Drink more Craft Beer at nowitsdarkmag.com

Restart is a monthly house event that happens at Brothers Drake on the second Thursday. BD is owned by Chris and I know one of his quieter partners Eric and wife Mickey from way back. Mickey also runs the yummy food truck out in the parking lot, Tokyo A Go-Go. I walk in on a frigid winter night of the first snow fall of the season. Billy Zehnal of Angela Perley and Playhouse fame is chatting it up with Ororo. I have known Christina since the days that she and Austen were running things at Bento Go Go on Tuesday nights. They would close the kitchen and we would dance our A’s off all night, like 15 years ago. And still at it OY! Speaking of OY, Pro-tip, check out OYO next door when... miss ohio 2015
Sarah Newkirk was fresh off the runway — after modeling at the CMH Fashion Week finale in Columbus, wearing fashions from NY designer Althea Harper (Project Runway), when she left for the Miss Ohio competition. Having been a runner-up or a semi-finalist in four prior years, she must have felt winning was within her grasp. Ceaselessly working to hone her skills, Newkirk finished at the top. The next ‘stop’ is the Miss USA pageant.

blazing through the holidays get high on local
What does one get a friend for the holidays? You can search Amazon and click a button and have it sent; you can give giftcards and receive free gas; you can go to the mall and watch parents line up with their kids for a picture with a fake Santa or you can shop local. Along High Street alone, specifically the Short North and Clintonville, you can find anything: housewares, thrift, antiques, high fashion, treats for pets, candles, art, books, crafted figures and clothes, artisan jellies, stationary, toys and yada yada yada. The list covers almost all of your needs. So why not shop local? Cbus has tremendous civic pride and this season, wear your freak flag by presenting something from home. Get them the t-shirt.
creating a fashion & model shoot What does it take to generate a fashion & model photoshoot? A lot more work than you think. For any endeavor, the first thing you must have is inspiration and when this happens, you hang on like a tenacious pit bull until you make your thoughts become a reality. One day while driving I saw a building on fire and the Columbus Fire Department was working on putting it out. Across the street, people were sitting in lawn chairs watching. new wall street owners speak Interview by Kelly Rousculp | Photography by Tony Bentivegna
For Sandy Rollins and Amber Myers, the new proprietors of Wall Street Night Club, their journey together as performers, entrepreneurs and lovers has come full circle. Rollins’ had her first burlesque performance at Wall Street in 2004; Myers, a drag king, appeared in her first drag show a few days before she met Rollins, six years ago. ‘The cool thing is I actually asked her for her number right over there,’ said Myers, pointing across the room of the main floor of the night club.
CMH FASHION WRAP-UP
Check out the hundreds of incredible Tony Bentivegna photographs online at nowitsdarkmag.com
The couple opened Bossy Grrl’s Pin Up Joint in south Clintonville early in 2013. The successful bar and restaurant is not only a venue for Columbus’ growing burlesque scene, but additionally functions as an open and accepting environment for all people. In November, Rollins and Myers sold Bossy Grrl’s, and on the same day, purchased the downtown Wall Street Night Club.
‘We’re a gay bar that’s accepting of the straight community’ Under new ownership, Wall Street will be just as open to all people – gay, bi, trans, or straight. The building is already under renovation that is scheduled to be completed in February, while still remaining open for business. In addition to the remodeling, there are other changes to look forward to in Wall Street’s future. Rollins and Myers have added pinball and ‘Ms. Pacman’ to the upstairs gaming area, and are working with food truck vendors to have food available to patrons until they can adapt to something that’s on site. An area of the night club has been designated as a future kitchen. Look for new exciting additions to their expanding craft beer and wine selection as well. As far as programming is concerned, apart from adding more burlesque and drag king shows to the schedule, the lineup is slated to stay very much the same. Wednesday night is still... mixology squared ‘body language’ by Luke Toney | Photos by Tim Evans
During Squared’s monthly dance party Body Language, at Victory’s Live Nov. 8, a record release party was held for Columbus’ own James Johnson, also known as DJ Plural. His new single ‘Shifting Forward’ will be distributed via Metroplex. Plural has built a reputation around his DJ skills and production savvy, to be highlighted during the next Body Language. Kevin Kennedy, otherwise known as FBK, brought his funk-infused minimal techno, published on labels such as Frictional and Xplor to the mix and Squared’s own Lower Frequency got things started with the dubby minimal musing we come to expect from the Columbus transplant. Body Language returns Saturday, Dec. 13 with quality electronic music. For more information, visit squaredonline.com
