“MEANT TO BE”

JEROME AND SHEMIA MET AT A LOCAL LOUNGE, A LOCATION SHEMIA had never been to and wouldn’t have gone to, she shares. “I felt it was meant for us to meet. We introduced ourselves, joked around, then me and my friends left. The next week I ran into him again so we exchanged numbers!”

On January 19, 2019, Jerome popped the question. He bought out the entire top floor of Café Sbisa Restaurant in New Orleans and told Shemia they were going to a fancy party for his stepmother’s brother. When she arrived, Shemia found all the guests wearing her favorite color, purple, and when she turned around Jerome was on one knee, with her family and friends holding a banner reading: “‘Will You Marry Me?’” She immediately said “Yes!”

The newlyweds are both first responders, Shemia is an RN at Touro Hospital and Jerome a K9 officer with the City of New Orleans, and both have worked throughout the pandemic caring for the sick and keeping the City safe. Covid restrictions forced them to make a lot of changes to their wedding, including moving the date as well as changing the ceremony location. In the end the entire wedding took place at the Westin Canal Place. “It’s been a time, but everything came out perfect!” shares Shemia.

“What drew us to the Westin was those beautiful windows overlooking the city and river front,” says Shemia.

The bride, dressed in a luxurious Badgley Mischka gown, and groom, in a

custom made tuxedo, said “I do” under an arch of white phalaenopsis orchids and then jumped the broom (made by Shemia’s mother) into their new life as a married couple.

The couple’s event planner, Tenisha Keller a.k.a. “Chocolate Bunnie,” made sure that the event was both luxurious and fabulous.

“Bunnie was wonderful,” says Shemia. “I gave her and the decor team my vision and they exceeded my expectations! When other friends were stressing during this pandemic I just remained calm. Bunnie took care of everything.”

“As I entered the 12th floor of one of the reception spaces, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” says Shemia. “From the burgundy dance floor to the gold glass tables, the fancy chairs, oversized florals and all of the candles. The room was more than I imagined.”

The wedding cake mirrored Shemia’s gown and the groom’s cake was a crawfish pot with all of Jerome’s newspaper accolades creatively included. The party even featured an appearance by the Zulu Tramps!

“I will tell others, let the professionals and the designers do what they do best,” advises Shemia. “That’s why you hired them. I still sit and look at the pictures and can’t believe how that blank canvas was turned into my fairytale dream wedding.”

“BRISCO BODA”

“IAN AND I MET AT A HOLE IN THE WALL BAR THROUGH MUTUAL friends,” shares Mari. “Ian was kind enough to buy me a po boy that evening,” she says, which led her to immediately text a friend, “I am going to marry this man!”

As it turns out, Mari’s intuition was right and five years (to the day!) and many adventures around the world later, the couple tied the knot at Corpus Christi Epiphany Catholic Church.

“We wanted our wedding to be a great blend of our cultural backgrounds,” shares Mari. “During the ceremony, we had Bible readings in Spanish and French.” They also included traditional Latino Lasso and Arras Coins rituals that symbolize eternal love and prosperity. The priest kept the ceremony upbeat by including references to the couple’s love of traveling and included lyrics from Luther Vandross (one of Mari’s favorites) during the Gospel.

“This wedding had originally been planned at not one, but two different locations but due to COVID-19 restrictions and changes it had to be replanned

within 3 days, with Thanksgiving being one of those days. Rena Sweeney from Alchemy Events and Rene Jalice and his staff from Down the Hatch pulled off a successful event in a short amount of time that people are still raving about!” Mari says.

“At the wedding reception, we wanted traditional New Orleans food and traditional Latino cuisine,” says Mari. Down the Hatch was able to create a fabulous menu including Shrimp and Grits, a NOLA staple, and Ropa Vieja, one of Cuba’s national dishes.

DJ G blended different genres of music, from Bounce to Merengue to keep the atmosphere lively and ended the evening with Second Line music.

Being able to celebrate with her family and friends was everything Mari and Ian could ask for. “After so many changes due to COVID, they were the perfect moments to have.”

The newlyweds plan to honeymoon in Morocco in late 2021.

“FRIENDS TO FOREVER”

IT WAS THE SUMMER OF 2013 WHEN STEPHANIE RIALES FOUND HER new best friend, Chris Hooee, during a fun night out at Dublin House. For more than a year, the two best friends would spend weekends and holidays together and as Stephanie puts it, “Chris was always my constant.”

“In Winter of 2014, I came to my senses and we went on our first ‘official‘ date,” says Stephanie. “Chris got floor seats to a Grizzlies game - how could I say no?

Needless to say, it was the date to end all dates.”

Six months later they found their first apartment together and a year after that they bought their first home as a couple.

“Two days before Christmas 2018 in the house we made a home, Chris asked me to spend forever with him,” shares Stephanie. “I didn‘t say ‘yes‘- I said ‘of course‘.”

The couple began planning a destination wedding with 75 guests in their favorite

city, New Orleans for April 18, 2020. Covid, of course, changed their plans. “Moving to October and to just 25 guests was not ideal but ended up being absolutely perfect,” says Stephanie. “It was intimate, emotional and just the best party with our favorite people.”

Stephanie’s brother walked her down the aisle and her grandfather officiated the ceremony. “Chris‘ mom led a Zuni Native American wedding vase tradition during the ceremony,” says Stephanie.

The whole day was perfect. “My favorite part was our first look in City Park on the beautiful bridge,” says Stephanie.

The day was filled with photo opps including a Pedicab ride around the French Quarter after the ceremony. The evening ended with traditional New Orleans second line music: “Kinfolk was AMAZING and ended the night perfectly!” shares Stephanie.

Your Rehearsal Dinner

THE REHEARSAL DINNER IS THE TIME TO REFLECT AND enjoy the company of close friends and family before the big event. It’s a wonderful time to present gifts to family members and the wedding party and thank them for supporting you during all of your wedding festivities. Restaurants, hotels and other establishments in NOW WEDDINGS MAGAZINE are some of the most beautiful in the country. Visit some of our amazing vendors and sample what they have to offer!

WHO HOSTS

Parents of the engaged couple or the couple themselves.

WHERE

There are no rules for location, but ideally it will be somewhere convenient to the ceremony site (if doing an actual rehearsal). Private residences, restaurants or a unique location special to the couple are all great options.

WHO TO INVITE

All immediate family (parents, grandparents, siblings and spouses), members of the wedding party (and their plus ones), and out of town guests; other wedding guests may be invited if the budget allows.

LEVEL OF FORMALITY

This is entirely dependent upon the couples’ desires and wedding style and the hosts’ budget. Anything from an informal backyard crawfish boil to the most formal 5 course seated dinner at a restaurant may be chosen.

WHEN TO BOOK

Book your rehearsal venue, caterer and other vendors at least 3-6 months prior. If you would like a very popular or specific location, it is wise to reserve your location as far in advance as possible.

Ashleigh Pichon & Connor Rougelot

ASHLEIGH + CONNOR’S STORY

Mardi Gras 2020 became even more special when Connor asked his lifelong friend, Ashleigh to marry him in front of the St. Louis Cathedral. Ashleigh and Connor met when they were 16 and Ashleigh was attending St. Scholastica Academy and Connor attending St. Paul’s. They both attended LSU where their friendship blossomed. Ashleigh moved to NYC to pursue her career at Kleinfeld Bridal and Connor went on to medical school at LSU Medical School in Shreveport, LA. Ashleigh and Connor have been long distance for almost 7 years and travel to see each other every moment they can. They are proof that distance does make the heart grow fonder. Shortly after Ashleigh moved back to NOLA, Connor proposed to Ashleigh on February 15 in front of their favorite spot in the city, the St. Louis Cathedral.

JP + JARED’S STORY

“Jared and I met at a group dinner of about 14 other guys in November of 2017. We sat on opposite ends of the table and didn’t speak much during dinner. After dinner we all walked to a local bar and that’s where we started chatting. By the end of the night we were dancing together and having a blast. Though Jared is a complete introvert, I am the exact apposite, an extrovert. We balance each other out perfectly! We took our time dating and eventually began traveling the world together. Our first trip was Ireland, then Thailand, Portugal, Spain and lastly El Salvador, where Jared proposed. It was New Year’s Day, 2020, at 12:10am, under the fireworks on the beach. Though Covid had us move our May date, we are looking forward to our October 2021 wedding!” - JP
