2 Kui Buri is an award winning resort under X2, a leading design resort/hotel/residences brand. X2 Kui Buri has won several awards including the Citation Award from the Association of Siamese Architect under the Royal Patronage in 2012 and recently the Gold Medal from Arcasia Awards 2013 from Arcasia Architect Regional Council of Asia. Located about 45 minutes south of the famous beachside resort town Hua Hin, X2 Kui Buri is situated on a secluded beach with a beautiful natural landscape. X2 Kui Buri is designed and built with a primary goal that they must “Satisfy the Spirit”. This is partly achieved via architectural design, but more importantly through natural beauty of the location and the meshing of the structures with the canvas provided by nature. The idea for the use of stones comes from the seasonal appearance of sea pebbles that find them self-scattered along the beach during winter months. The “Mountain Rock” used throughout the resort are all from local quarries. The external stone walls of the villas appear as wall and not as a building, creating an invisibility of design. What is a structural wall for one villa appears as a fence wall to other villa. By using this invisible wall design and clever landscaping; villas are private without the need to be encased in four high fences. This importantly allows cool sea breezes to pass through the villa area with minimal disruption. It provides privacy without isolation. NOW Travel Asia 43

Seoul A LIBRARY OF INSPIRATION AND CREATIVITY THE LIBRARY This trendy hotspot may seem a bit unusual if you were told it was a library. But this isnt just any ordinary library. First it’s location, Gahoe-dong, is a beautiful, nostalgic area of Seoul that retains remnants of Korean history. Guests will notice Hanok rooftop perched atop a modern, square building, symbolically signaling the transition of old and new. The building’s interior was as carefully crafted as the exterior. With open spaces and large glass windows allow natural lighting throughout the library. The impressive literary collection found here boasts 11,500 design books and reference materials, some even out of print. The library is growing rapidly due to a few factors, it inspires creativity, it casts off relaxation, and the book cafe inside isn’t too shabby either.

Colonized by the Portuguese in the mid 16th century, Macau boasts rich cultural heritage from the West. Considered the door to South China, Macau isn’t just known as the entertainment and trading hub, but it is home to many UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Every year, the “Las Vegas of Asia” welcomes millions of tourists to experience more than just entertainment. Macau also has a unique mixed Chinese Portuguese culture, food, architecture, and renowned events like the highly anticipated Macau Grand Prix.

Bangkok

Since Thailand is a leading leisure destination in the world and the transportation hub for ASEAN, Bangkok is one of the most visited cities in the world. Bangkok is also known as Krung Thep or the “City of Angels” for its amazing cultural heritages that features beautiful temples and traditional Thai architectures. More to just what eyes can see, Thai food ranks in the same league as Chinese, Japanese, and French food, and Bangkok is home to the finest traditional Thai restaurants, as well as creative modern and fusion Thai restaurants.

Beijing

With over 20 millions people, Beijing is one of the most populous in the world. The metropolis has been China’s educational, political, and cultural center for centuries. For that reason, Beijing is full of cultural treasures like the world-renowned Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven. Beijing is also one of the most modernized cities with futuristic architectures like the Beijing National Stadium or the “Bird Nest”, and the National Center for the Performing Arts, and the success of the 2008 Olympic Games confirmed the status of Beijing in the world stage.

Osaka

Osaka is the cockpit of Kansai and one of the commercial centers in Japan. It’s famous for its friendly hospitality and the refined atmosphere of Kyoto, but more than that, it’s ‘the destination’ for good food! Okonomiyaki (pan-fried batter cake) and Takoyaki (Octopus ball) are some well-known Japanese food that originated from Osaka. Osaka has much more to offer, its highlights include Osaka-jo and its surrounding parks, Osaka Aquarium, and the majestic Osaka castle. But the city really comes to live as sunlight fades away and the flashing neon dance.

Shanghai

Shanghai beats Beijing in term of population. Shanghai flourished as the center for commerce between East and West, and it has since became the center for culture, finance, media, fashion, and technology, and transport. Due to construction boom in the 1920s, Art Deco buildings are everywhere in Shanghai . Some of the famous Art Deco buildings here are the fabulous Park Hotel and Grand Theater. During the last decade, Shanghai has been growing rapidly with large number of distinctive modern skyscrapers like the Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center, and Jin Mao Tower.

Tokyo

As the capital city, Tokyo is the political and financial core of Japan. The futuristic metropolis is home to more than 13 million residents and world’s industrial giants like Honda, Sony, and Mitsubishi. The Japanese, especially in Tokyo, takes everything, including their food, very seriously. Tokyo has been awarded, by far, the most Michelin stars ahead of any other city in the world!

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH

MARK BYRNE

HIGHLIFE ASIA IS A SHANGHAI BASED EVENT MANAGEMENT AND CONCIERGE COMPANY THAT SPECIALIZE IN ARRANGING EXCLUSIVE EVENTS FOR PRIVATE AND CORPORATE CLIENTS. HIGHLIFE ASIA OFFERS A DIVERSE RANGE OF PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL SERVICES FOR ASIA’S ELITE. EVENTS COULD BE ANYTHING FROM CORPORATE GALAS, PRIVATE PARTIES, FASHION SHOWS, AND WEDDINGS TO NAME A FEW. OUR MAGAZINE HAD A FEW QUESTIONS FOR HIGHLIFE ASIA CEO AND FOUNDER, MARK BYRNE WHOSE EXPERTISE IN AREAS OF OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT, BRAND MANAGEMENT, STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT, AND A WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE HELP SOLIDIFY THE COMPANY.

What things in general does Highlife Asia offer to clients as a stand out event management and concierge company? Our events are high quality made to measure productions, whether it’s a product launch or an intimate dinner setting, we source suppliers and venues of the highest caliber to give clients an event to remember. Our access channels have to be what sets us apart from other companies, as we offer unique luxury experiences that usually combine events and travel. At Highlife Asia we like to guarantee a client VIP service, this means we offer exclusive services unavailable elsewhere. For example, VIP tickets to the 2013 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, with access to celebrity filled after-parties, private jet travel and 5 star hotel accommodations. When we created this experience we pulled out all the stops to give the client the holiday of a lifetime, including a side trip to Las Vegas, and made sure every detail was checked to give them an elite service.

What’s your secret to managing so many clients around the world and keep it organized? To say “teamwork” maybe a cliché, but it truly is our greatest asset. We manage our work together as an expert team and importantly, our clients are involved throughout the process. The team all share similar passions and mindsets but crucially every single member of Highlife Asia has different talents and experiences to bring to the table. Keeping clients involved and up to date also builds a great relationship that is defined by trust and mutual understanding.

What would you say are the strengths of Highlife Asia? Our strengths are creativity and flexibility. Working in a different cultures presents many challenges, but we never take no for answer. From the beginning of any project we strive for quality control. Highlife Asia will develop new concepts continuously, build upon our past successful events, and ensure the rapport with clients remains strong. Clients are either taking the trip

of a lifetime, planning their dream wedding or launching a product or service that is dear to them, very often in a business capacity, so every step of the journey must make them feel comfortable, confident and at ease.

decisions are often based on the ric h cultural heritage that can be associated with an established overseas brand. Clients don’t have to stay in China anymore to buy these items, often preferring to travel abroad to purchase luxury goods.

Another key strength again has to be great communication, and we want the whole team to engage in a process, so we don’t just end up as another run of the mill event company. Building and maintaining the global network we have is paramount to our success and to our client’s success, and we are connected to 88 concierge companies worldwide and to thousands of luxury suppliers so we need to nurture these relationships everyday.

What motivates you to always keep moving forward?

Please tell us a few examples of exclusive services that Highlife Asia can provide to customers? We find a lot of our clients here in China want to host overseas events, and their individual requirements can range from a corporate team building experience in Thailand, to the perfect wedding on a beach by the Indian Ocean. We host luxury shopping experiences and have the connections to give a client exclusive access to their favorite designer store for example, or we can provide celebrity meet and greets and have arranged backstage passes to televised events. With every journey we offer the highest quality of service throughout.

What’s your view about the luxury market in Asia, mainly in Shanghai? The luxury market here is in its infancy so attitudes are still developing; yet lifestyle options are changing rapidly. Even though the global economy may be suffering, and so the luxury market on the global stage is consequently also suffering; within China there is a huge thirst for luxury products and services and this will continue to rise, due to the growing number of the affluent and middle classes here. Wealthy Chinese consumers are travelling more and have more disposable income. There is a shift in attitude for luxury consumers who don’t want just bling anymore. Consumers are becomingmore sophisticated in their tastes and their purchasing

A good challenge, an event or experience where we can be creative in the use of our transferable skills. No one event is ever the same and we thrive on the fast pace of a new experience everyday. There is an element of theatre and the element of surprise - our clients take away memories they will never forget and it takes a lot of planning and negotiating to deliver this!

What has been the key to your success? We offer concierge services that no one else can, and we have a team who truly love what they do, as well as being extremely skilled and dedicated. We stay flexible and ensure we work very closely with our clients to make sure they are happy and to allow us as a team to adapt to any changes that may need to be made along the way. We have built up a solid platform of trusted suppliers and are constantly brainstorming to find new creative ways of delivering what our clients expect.

Going forward, is there anything new on the horizon Highlife Asia? As China continues to hold the focus of the world, the west will definitely continue to see Shanghai’s importance on the world stage. Big named celebrities and businesses are encouraged more and more to engage here due to China’s booming economy, sometimes seeing more opportunities here rather than on their own turf. From that perspective it is exhilarating for us with all those new opportunities. Ho Chi Minh City – The Gem of the South Ho Chi Minh City is the most dynamic and fast moving city in Vietnam, and we are not talking about the chaotic streets that are full of beeping motorbikes. Also known as Saigon, the city was the stronghold of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. The high-octane city of commerce and culture drives the whole country into the future, yet its history and heritages are strongly preserved. Stroll through timeless alleys to ancient pagodas or take a shot at bargaining for silk or souvenirs in teeming old markets, before jumping through time into the future beneath sleek skyscrapers or at designer malls, gourmet restaurants and minimalist bars. The worlds of the past and the present combine seamlessly in Ho Chi Minh City. Centuries old churches and temples, former GI hotels and government buildings that one generation ago witnessed a city in turmoil, stand side by side modern hi-tech business buildings and Bitexco Financial Tower – the highest tower in the city. Ho Chi Minh City offers the country’s largest variety of Vietnamese and international food. Authentic local food at bargain prices is one of the glories of Vietnam. The local food shows influences from French colonial times. Bakeries have fresh and excellent baguettes filled with cheese, potted meat, ham, and onions. However, more and more fine restaurants and cafés are emerging rapidly in numbers as Vietnam grows.

Our first location, located on the Yamagata-Miyagi prefectural border northern island region is a mountain park centered in the Zao Mountain Range. This area hosts a wide range of activities keeping visitors on the go as nature becomes a winter wonderland. Simply put, visitors come here to sightsee and play in the snow. The regions notable attractions are the mysterious Okama crater lake, known for its varying changes in water colors throughout the day. The Zao Shizen-shokubutsu-en (botanical garden) is a treasure house of alpine plants. Travelers won’t want to miss the cable car ride which shows the whole Yamagata Basin from a birds eye view. There is a very unique event that takes place here where trees are glazed with ice, becoming “snow monsters”, during winter with oddly shapes and sizes. This event is a rare sight even in Japan and appear only when several weather and vegetation conditions come together at just the right time. Skiers will have a grand time at one of Tohoku’s largest ski resorts located in the region.

This next location is great for the family. A festival for the ages that dates back 400 years is said to have its origins in the traditional event of returning New Year decorations to the gods by burning them, and also in the custom of children chasing away birds damaging crops. The festival features many igloo-like snow houses, called kamakura, which are built at various locations across the city. Within each kamakura there is a snow altar dedicated to the water deity. Customarily, children invite festival visitors into their kamakura and offer them rice cakes and a type of warm sweet rice wine. The centerpoint is the exceptional Hirosaki Castle known for its springtime cherry blossoms but the winter season blankets the castle park with snow local residents and groups create some 500 lanterns and snow carvings, large and small, throughout the park. with candle lights lining the perimeter of Hasu Pond, the entire area is riddled in fantastic snowy light.

Another winter wonder happens in the Jigokudani Monkey Park located In the Nagano prefecture. The Area due to its very steep cliffs and the steam coming off the springs in everywhere, ancient people called this valley ‘Jigokudani (Hell valley)’. Best time for a visit are between the months of December to March while the area is covered in snowfall. Visitors can watch Snow Monkeys (Japanese Macaques) descend from mountain forests to warm and bathe in natural hot springs. This worldwide popular place are popular with tourists, ecological researchers and photographers. If you visit in the winter season then it is essential that you have proper winter clothes on because the temperature is very cold. In the capital of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island you can find one of Japans largest winter festivals. Every winter, about two million people come to Sapporo to see a large number of splendid snow statues and ice sculptures which line Odori Park, the grounds at Community Dome Tsudome, and the

main street in Susukino. Starting in 1950 with 6 snow sculptures made by local high school students, the Sapporo Snow Festival is now one of Japan’s largest winter events. Over the years it has evolved into a full-scale international event, attracting more than 2 million visitors a year. The festival showcases the biggest and most beautiful snow sculptures in the world. This festival has a short life span of just seven days so don’t miss it ! Sendai has a population of one million and is the political and economic center of Japan’s Tohoku (northeast) Region. Although Sendai is a large city, it is known throughout Japan as a modern city which is in harmony with nature. The city possesses beautiful

scenery, such as the Hirose River that runs through central Sendai, and the lush Zelkova trees that line the central city.Greenery is especially abundant in the center of the city, which has tree-lined streets and parks. As a result, Sendai is called the “City of Trees.”The zelkova trees that line Jozenji Dori are illuminated with about 600,000 brilliant lights in this winter spectacle of light. Visitors can enjoy a romantic stroll through this “tunnel of illumination.”This traditional event is held at shrines where worshippers bring their New Year’s decorations to be burned in a large bonfire and pray for good health, good fortune and the wellbeing of their families. The largest of these festivals is held at the Osaki Hachiman Shrine, famous for its hadaka mairi (men dressed only in loincloths marching to the shrine).

Lastly, our two last locations would be considered strawberry heaven for strawberry lovers. First, Fukuoka is situated in the northern extremity of Kyushu, facing the Sea of Suo to the northeast, the Sea of Genkai to the northwest, and the Sea of Ariake to the southwest. Born in Fukuoka, the Amaou brand of strawberry can also only be cultivated in its homeland due to strict quality control and production guidance. Japanese strawberries can weigh up to 40g a piece. The second location main location for strawberries are the the Tochiotome strawberries of the Tochigi province. The Tochigi province is Situated in the center of Honshu (the main island of Japan), Tochigi is surrounded by mountains and hills in the east, west and north, and the Kanto Plains spread to the south. There are the Nasu, Taka

hara and Nikko volcanic clusters within the prefecture with a number of hot spring resorts scattered in and around them. Visitors can travel to these locations in November in some places and pick as many of these delicious fruits as you can for 30 minutes time for a small fee. In closing japan has an abundance of beauty for tourists to experience and enjoy throughout any season of the year, however, the winter season provides some rare events only seen during the snow fall. Guests will be dazzled by the color white with festivities to enjoy for the whole family or a couple looking for a romantic time. The winter months vary from region for snow duration which gives visitors a somewhat small window to see these spectacular happening of nature and people. Let the winter festivities begin!
