REWARD FROM THE EDITOR
hen you are taking a holiday, there are many different factors to consider when looking for a perfect hotel. Many cities in Asia relish the chance to advertise their own unique selling points as well as the hotel business. This means that the selling-point of a hotel is no longer just about, say, the name of the chef in the kitchen, it’s about design that plays a huge role for the hotels. The reality is that if there is a unique product, the chances of people talking about the brand increase dramatically. Great design always generates more buzz. Fashion Designer Hotels are the new hot accessory now, with everyone from Giorgio Armani to Missoni checking in to their own places in Dubai, Kuwait, Bali and Saudi Arabia. And there are also some Concept Hotels that are very popular throughout the major cities. In this issue NOW Travel Asia magazine brings you to the best design, our readers’ choice of ‘The Best Design Hotels in Asia’. evi Ratn represents the spirit of modern Rajasthan and combines lyrical spaces with bold architecture. It takes its name from the ‘Nav Ratn’; nine pure gemstones that focus cosmic energy of an associated celestial body, ruled by a deity. The gem-craft of Jaipur, is reflected in the intricate quality of detail in public and private spaces. The sculptural astronomical devices of Jantar Mantar, made in the early eighteenth century, were the starting point for the architects for an interpretaion of modern Rajasthan. The ancient observatories were truly ahead of their times in accuracy, scale and gradeur. Taking forward this spirit, the all suite Devi Ratn boutique hotel is a place that combines lyrical spaces with bold architecture. you have worked with many luxury hotels before. Why now Hotel Muse?
I’ve decided to join Hotel Muse because of its unique concept and branding. Hotel Muse is the latest member of the MGallery Collection under Accor. MGallery is a small collection of upscale and exceptional hotels remarkable in their personality and unique in style and décor. I believe that my character and personality significantly portrays Hotel Muse and MGallary’s character and concept;a collection of strong, remarkable personalities with sharp, strong styling but still elegant, designed for those that like to discover the new and the unexpected. As “Public Relations” is well known, what is “Director of Social Affairs”?
Public Relations is part of my job. My role for a position Director of Social Affairs is to organize social events and act as the Hotel’s spokesperson to the public in order to promote the Hotel brand and enhance the recognition and sense of identity for Hotel Muse. It is my belief that through my extensive experience with many luxury hotel groups and through managing my own PR & event management firm for many years, I am well positioned to fulfill this challenge.
Bangkok has so many hi class and stylish hotels already. What is new image Hotel Muse going to bring to Bangkok?
Hotel Muse will bring Bangkok a heretofore new unknown hedonistic experience: a hotel dedicated to the golden age of travel and the most opulent of art and design. The hotel likewise dedicates itself no less to the art of pure pleasure, for every conceptual element reflects a theme of fanciful indulgence. It is the rising high above one of the city’s most desired residential districts.

What is in Hotel Muse’s style?
The hotel indicates prosperity of the late 19th and early 20th century period, the indeed a golden age of Thailand. It is a time of opening up and looking out, of engaging the wider world with an impassioned and resolutely independent turn of mind. So too was it in Europe, as the years saw the birth of luxury travel on glamorous trains and magnificent ships. In such a spirit, Hotel Muse blends the heritages of East and West, the styles of Siam and France, into a beguiling melange of timeless sophistication and unequivocal modernity.

It is the beginning of civilization of Thailand. Hotel Muse suits to the traveler who’s not only expects for 5 stars service but also chic with the very out-standing identity. You can come for drinking after work. The hotel is available for not so big convention. It is a wonderful place for small or private party as well. You appeared in many publications. People know you as a famous chic and beautiful star with attractive lifestyle. Do you think being a celebrity is part of your success?
I am a representative of Hotel Muse. Being a celebrity helps me complete my mission easily. However this does not mean without my reputation I can not get to my goal but it must be much harder. I am a hard working woman. I always put the best effort in everything I do. My success is for my personal pride not to make people call me ‘cool’.

AIRLINES STORY
Emirates
A Flight
of Fortune
The story of Emirates is no less fascinating each time it’s told - and it has been, many times around the world. Dubai’s quest to have its own
international airline, the cheque for 10 million US dollars from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the two leased aircraft and the small team that established an airline of the highest order.
M
any still marvel at what Emirate has achieved in 25 years, since the first flight to Karachi took off on October 25th, 1985 from a relatively rudimentary Dubai airport. Under the chairmanship of HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, it is a story of collective wisdom, forensic planning and the boldness to create an airline that would help create an inspiring modern city, snatched from the desert. The growth of Dubai and Emirates went hand in hand and they still do to this day.
With a fleet of 153 modern, widebodied aircraft, and a new plane arriving roughly every four weeks, the airline currently flies to 111 destinations in six continents, from its international hub of Dubai. Born into Dubai’s Open Skies policy, the carrier has thrived on competition. Currently, 120 airlines fly into Dubai and over half the 42.9 million passengers who travelled through the city last year were carried by Emirates. Emirates’ standing is so much more than an airline. The company has evolved into a travel and tourism operation on a colossal scale, straddling NOW TRAVEL ASIA

numerous divisions and propelled forward under the umbrella of the Emirates Group. The impressive portfolio includes Dubai’s household name of Dnata, the successful supplier of air travel services, and many other entities, such as Emirates SkyCargo, Emirates Hotels & Resorts, Skywards and Emirates Aviation College. In all, there are more than 40 brands, employing 49,950 peopl
124 JULY/AUGUST 2011 7/7/11 4:41 PM
In the 2009/10 financial year, the Emirates Group announced record net profits of AED 4.2 billion (US$ 1.1 billion), with Group profit margin improved to 9.1 percent from 2.6 percent a year earlier. Wholly-owned by the government of Dubai, Emirates is often asked about the secret of its success. A passion to be the very best, innovation, a strong management team and astute cost consciousness are amongst the factors that have played an important role. This approach has led to an array of product offerings such as the extremely popular onboard ice system, loaded with hundreds of entertainment channels on demand, and a host of industry firsts. In March 2008, Emirates announced it was the first airline in the world to enable passengers to make authorised onboard mobile phone calls a mile in the sky.
Sometimes rivals have accused Emirates of receiving subsidies. We wish that was the case, but the carrier receives no financial assistance from the government of Dubai and is subject to the same market forces as those who stand in awe. Despite this, and jostling in arguably the most competitive industry in the world, Emirates has enjoyed double digit profits for the past 22odd years.
A
ll Emirates’ frontline facilities, including the massive Emirates Engineering Centre are now equipped to handle the Airbus A380, 75 of which are on order. The airline’s total order book numbers 200 aircraft valued at over 68 billion US dollars, not bad for an airline that began with two leased aircraft, a Boeing 737 and an Airbus 300 B4.
They will continue to weave high quality training into the fabric of this potent brand and lead with indomitable energy and vision. They realise the world has grown to expect it.

THE NAME CONJURES UP IMAGES OF A WILD, ISOLATED PLACE WHERE TIME PASSES SLOWLY. THE DENSE WOODLAND OF THE BLACK FOREST OR SCHWARZWALD IN GERMAN, STRETCHES AWAY TO THE HORIZON, BUT THIS SOUTHWEST CORNER OF BADENWĂœRTTEMBERG IS NEITHER INACCESSIBLE NOR DULL. Its distinctive characteristics include the cuckoo clock, the women's native costume with big red or black pom-poms on the hat, and the wild, almost pagan way the Carnival season is celebrated. The first travelers checked in here 19 centuries ago, when the Roman emperor Caracalla and his army rested and soothed their battle wounds in the natural-spring waters at what later became Baden-Baden. Today, celebrities flock to the Black Forest like clockwork to appreciate the springs and the majestic greenery that form its backdrop.

BLACK FOREST GETS ITS NAME FROM ITS DARK, SLIGHTLY SINISTER CANOPY OF EVERGREENS.
The vast expanse of hills, valleys, rivers and forests stretch from the swish spa town of Baden-Baden to the Swiss border, and from the Rhine almost to Lake Constance. About 200 kilometres (120 miles) long and 60 kilometres (37 miles) wide, the Black Forest encompasses an area of approximately 12,000 km2 (4,600 sq mi). It is bordered by the Rhine valley to the west and south and touches on France and Switzerland.
celebrated of which is the Westweg, running the length of the forest from Pforzheim to Basel via Mummelsee, Hausach, Titesee and Feldbach. It covers 280km, and makes for a fine fortnight's walk for a moderately fit person, with a day's travelling at each end.
The highest peak of the Black Forest is the so-called ‘Feldberg’ with an elevation of 1,493 metres (4,898 ft). The Black Forest is not only one of the most varied and beautiful, but also one of the biggest and best known holiday regions in Germany.
And if you don’t fancy a walk, you could cycle. Bicycle touring is encouraged via signposted biking trails, some of which cross the borders into Switzerland and the French region of Alsace. Bikes are available to rent in many railway stations, as well as at the Mountainbike-Fun-Park in Todtnau.
The Südschwarzwald is bordered by the Rhine in the south, the river also builds the border to Switzerland here. Once the Rhine changes its course northwards, it builds the border with France. The mild climate of the Rhine valley influences the climate of the western slopes of the black forest as well. The Black Forest is a hiker's heaven, and practically every corner is worth exploring. The region is criss-crossed by well-signposted trails that allow walkers to reach areas and vistas often inaccessible by car, including castle ruins and waterfalls. The Black Forest also boasts several long-distance hiking trails, the most
If you seek a great drive, try one of the scenic routes such as the Schwarzwald-Hochstrasse, the Schwarzwald Talerstrasse or the Badische Weinstrasse. Each is well-signposted and offers calm driving along picturesque roads. While at the wheel, don’t miss two big scenic attractions. First, the Wutach Gorge, a national reserve. Next, Triberg and its waterfall; at 163m, it’s Germany’s highest. A journey through the northern Black Forest takes you through forests of fir and pine and across high plateaus. Ferns and foxgloves carpet the woods, while broom and

WHAT IS A TRIP TO THE GERMAN BLACK FOREST WITHOUT TRYING OUT BLACK FOREST CAKE? The German name is Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte which means black forest cherry torte. It is thought that the cake was first invented in the late 16th century in the Black forest area of Germany. At the time, chocolate was first introduced into baking and desserts. At the same time, cherry trees were grown locally generating a liquor distilled from tart cherry, called kirsch. A typical Black Forest cake consists of several layers of chocolate cake with whipped cream and cherries between each layer. The entire cake is generally frosted with more whipped cream and decorated with maraschino cherries or sour cherries and chocolate shavings. Traditionally the cake was soaked in cherry liquor. Today the cake is not commonly soaked in the alcohol.

winding roads, the fine Breisgau and Markgräfler Land vineyards in the southern Black Forest mean that good wine is always in plentiful supply.
A true paradise for walkers in both summer and winter with views as far as the Upper Rhine Plains and beyond the river to the Vosges mountains. Hotels are numerous and local attractions include Mount Hornisgrinde, Lake Mummelsee, Mount Schliffkopf, Mount Kniebis and the Schwarzenbach reservoir.
The Upper Black Forest and the Hotzenwald forest, which extends down the south-facing stepped slopes of Mount Feldberg to the Upper Rhine and Lake Constance like so many giant sun terraces, are just as perfect for walking
The central Black Forest around Offenburg features a variety of natural landscapes that blend harmoniously with the wooded mountains. In the hilly Ortenau region, Riesling, Ruländer, Traminer, Pinot Noir and Spätburgunder grapes grow on the steep vine-clad hills which drop down into the Upper Rhine Valley. A number of impressive ruins hark back to the region’s colourful history. In quaint medieval towns, the signs hanging outside the inns advertise delicious Black Forest specialities. In Gutach, you can visit the Vogtsbauernhof Open-Air Museum, which exhibits the most impressive houses and farm buildings from the region’s history. Old Black Forest farms with wooden shingles and steep roofs reaching almost to the ground are scattered across the wild and romantic valleys. In keeping with local custom, they serve up bacon with rye bread, washed down with a glass of Kirsch schnapps, to hungry passers-by. And the Kaiserstuhl region with its

When to Go
The swankiest place in Baden-Baden is Brenner's Park-Hotel & Spa at Schillerstrasse (Tel. 00 49 7221 9000; www.brenners. com). At the other end of the Black Forest, you could stay at the Grunenberg (Tel. 00 49 7675 929922; www.thegrunenberg.com), a family hotel set amid beautiful scenery.
Things to do
Freudenstadt is the most centrally located town and it is the starting point for the travelers to go for hiking and ski-trails through the nearby hills.
In summer the areas around Schluchsee and Titisee are particularly crowded. In early fall and late spring, the Black Forest is less crowded (except during the Easter holidays) but just as beautiful. Some hotels close for the winter.
Shopping in the Black Forest is really a wonderful experience for the tourists. Wood-carving is the traditional cottage industry of the Black Forest region. You can buy carved ornaments or cuckoo clocks as souvenir.
