Maldives
Never-ending Paradise
Weather Maldives usually enjoys beautiful tropical weather with bright sunny day and easy sea breeze. The average temperature is a warm 30 Celsius, making it real easy for you to pack your holiday suitcase. There are 2 distinct seasons in Maldives – dry and rainy seasons. Dry season begins in the end of October through to the end of March and the rainy season begins from the end of April through to the end of October.
36 NOW TRAVEL ASIA MAY/JUNE 2015
When talking about great beaches and islands, it’s hard not to mention a world renowned little paradise named Maldives. Around a million tourist travel to Maldives each year for one thing only - amazing holidays! And with unrivalled luxury, stunning white-sand beaches and an extraordinary underwater world, Maldives is the no brainer answer for a memorable holiday of a lifetime. Located just across the equator below the west coast of India, Maldives is formed from thousands of beautiful coral islands dotting the Indian Ocean in two rows of atolls, with the total of 26 atolls. The reefs of the islands, alive with countless types of underwater creatures and vibrant corals, protect the islands from wind and wave action of the surrounding vast oceans. Only 200 islands are inhabited by locals and around 90 prestigious islands are developed into world-class resorts. With only a few inhabited islands, Maldivians are widely dispersed across the atolls which make Maldives an amazingly secluded getaway destination for discerning tourist around the world. The looks of the Maldivians may differ from one atoll to another, attributing to the genes passed on by South and Southeast Asians, Africans, and Arabians, with Islam as the main religion.
Transportation Located on Hulhulé Island right next to the capital, Malé International Airport is the main gateway to Maldives. Most international flights are from China, India, Sri Lanka, Dubai and South-East Asia, as well as an increasing number of flights from Europe. Ferry service will take you to Malé and then the easiest way to get around the capital is on a motorbike or a taxi. If you want to go to other islands, speedboats and seaplanes are the main choices of transportation.
NOW TRAVEL ASIA 37 MAY/JUNE 2015
EXPLORE THE LAND
SHOPPING AT SINGAPORE BAZAAR Lining the north of Chaandhanee Magu that runs from north to south of Male, Singapore Bazaar is the place to go if you are looking for souvenirs local handicrafts, diving and surfing equipment, and teahouses where Maldivians meet for a snack and a chat. Here you’ll get to experience a slice of Maldivian’s everyday life. DISCOVER THE CULTURE OF MALDIVES AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM Built in 2010, the new National Museum is located in Sultan’s Park, Malé. Although the new building was recently built, its interior has been retained from the days of the Sultanate, including the handwritten Qur’an engraved on the walls of the building. The museum displays historic artefacts, ranging from stone objects to fragments of royal antiquities, dating back to Buddhism era through to the conversion to Islam. Nonetheless, most items are dedicated to Islamic era and you’ll find royal clothing and jewelry, lacquered drums and miniature fishing boats. ENJOY ART Housed in one of the oldest building in Male just east of Sultan Park, Esjehi Art Gallery is simply a perfect attraction for those who appreciate art. Although quite small in size, the art gallery does very well in preserving traditional art while promoting modern art by local artists.
38 NOW TRAVEL ASIA MAY/JUNE 2015
TRY MALDIVIAN DANCE AND MUSIC The root of Maldivian is linked to Sri Lanka, Africa, India, Arabia, and even Portugal, and so the culture is heavily influenced by these roots. Music and dance are 2 prominent examples of these influences, for example, the “Bodu Beru” folk music that hints African tribal drumming rituals with a unique Maldivian accent. Some dances are exclusively gender based such as the Bandiyaa Jehun which has roots in India and performed by women only. On the other hand, Thaara was introduced by the Arabs in the 17th century and performed exclusively by men only.
TOUR HISTORIC SITE The Grand Friday Mosque or the Hukuru Miskiiy is the ancient mosque built over 350 years ago during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar I. If you are not a Muslim, you’ll require a permission to enter the mosque. The beauty of the architecture and intricately carved Arabic writing and ornament patterns sure worth the trouble of getting permission. Just a short walk from the Grand Friday Mosque is an important historic site called Medhu Ziyaaraiy or the tomb of Abu-al Barakaath-Ul Barbary. The Moroccan scholar is responsible for the mass conversion of Maldives to Islam. If you cannot or don’t have time for an entrance permission to the Grand Friday Mosque, you can always visit the Islamic Centre instead. The Islamic Centre is Male’s most renowned architectural landmark, containing the largest mosque in Maldives. The golden domed mosque welcomes visitors outside prayer hours, but photographs are not allowed inside.
ENJOY THE SEA
FISHING AND NIGHT FISHING
TAKE A SUBMARINE TOUR
Adrenalin junkies will love big-game fishing in Maldives! Battle with a large yellow-fin tuna, wahoo, marlin, or a majestic sail-fish, and grab your trophy back to the resort for the freshest and most fulfilling meal of your life. While big-game fishing let you work out the muscles, night fishing is a much more leisurely activity. Catch your own red snappers, groupers, and grunts, but keep in mind that you must release endangered species. Most resort operates their own night-fishing trips, so just ask the front desk.
Explore the underwater world and observe the variety of life on the reef without getting wet! Since 99% of Maldives is water, the whale submarine shows you what Maldives really is. It provides an opportunity for the old and the youngs, ables and disables, to see wonderful lives that inhibit the sea of Maldives. Just ask your resort front desk to book a seat in the submarine for you and enjoy!
SWIM WITH WHALE SHARKS The gentle giant of the sea is an all-year-round resident of Maldives and you’ll have a great chance of encountering one with just a snorkel gear, not a scuba gear. With thousands of islands in Maldives, you need to know where to look for them. In May – December, Whale Sharks generally prefer the western side of the Maldives; whereas they are spotted in the east side during December – April. The best atolls to see them are Ari and Baa Atolls.
TAKE A DHONI CRUISE A dhoni is basically equivalent to a Maldivian version of a yacht. A dhoni cruise is an exciting alternate option to your Maldives adventure. Instead of staying in a beachfront resort, sail between unspoilt palm-fringed tropical islands and visit idyllic corners of the Maldives, far away from the tourist resorts, in your private dhoni with professional staffs and personal chef!
TAKE PICTURE FROM SEAPLANE You haven’t seen the unbelievable beauty of Maldives until you have seen Maldives from up above. Seaplane photo flight guarantees magical sceneries and the opportunity of a lifetime. Fly over shallow lagoons, pristine and uninhabited islands, a variety of tourist resort islands, fishing villages and the sparkling sea. Try to spot schools of dolphins, Manta and sting rays, and schools of fish as they cavort in the crystal clear waters.
LEARN TO DIVE No introduction is needed for Maldives as a premier diving destination. The warm seas have high visibility throughout the year, with as far as 50 meters of visibility through the crystal clear water. See a thousand different fish species swim across over 3,000 coral reefs. Scuba divers from across the globe travel to Maldives to witness nature wonders like whale sharks, manta rays, eagle rays, reef sharks, hammerhead sharks and moray eels, as well as many smaller fish and coral species. Popular dive sites are located around Ari Atoll, North/South Male Atoll, and Addu Atoll. However, you don’t need to be professional divers to experience amazing underwater world of Maldives because Maldives also offers exceptional spot for snorkeling.
NOW TRAVEL ASIA 39 MAY/JUNE 2015
EAT
It shouldn’t be any surprise to see fish and coconut in most of Maldivian traditional dishes. Most fish is normally smoked, fried, barbequed, or roasted with coconut milk or curry powder, and usually accompanied by white rice or Maldivian flat-bread called “Roshi”. You are guaranteed to come across “Mas Huni”, diced smoked tuna with grated coconuts, lime, pepper, and onions, as it’s the most common Maldivian breakfast. Other popular dishes you shouldn’t miss are Bambukeylu hiti (breadfruit curry), Kulhi boakibaa (spicy fish cake), and Theluli mas (fried fish with chili and garlic).
DRINK
Since Maldives is an Islamic state, alcohol is banned for local population, but restaurants, resorts, and hotels do have permit to sell alcohol for tourists. With the restriction, Maldivians enjoy delicious tropical juices and tea like the traditional “Toddy”, which is aged coconut sap and plain coconut sap. Fresh tropical fruits such as mango and pineapple are also invented into popular beverages. Most Maldivian enjoy a daily cup Madivian tea called Sai, and surprisingly the law is sometimes bended with the consumption of Raa (fermented Toddy that is slightly alcoholic - the closest any Maldivian gets to alcohol).
FESTIVAL
Maldives celebrates the end of Ramadan, the holiest month for all Muslims and usually falls on the ninth month of the lunar calendar, in style with Kuda Eid. The 3 days celebration begins with an early “EID” prayer, then it’s time for a feast, dance, and traditional and modern sports! On 26th July, the whole country gathers together to celebrate Maldives’ Independence day. The capital will be extremely lively with floats, parades, and dacing Maldivians, especially at the Republic Square.
Tip: The month of May-Nov is marginally cooler than the rest of the year and Male isn't as sweaty during these months.
KURUMBA MALDIVES Set on a tropical island north of Male Atoll and just 10 minutes speedboat ride from the airport, Kurumba Maldives is very first Maldives reasort.
T
he village-like island opened its door back in the 1970s and has been upholding its proud history, charismatic character and heartfelt service, to offer diverse experiences amid a stunning island of the Maldives. What separate Kurumba Maldives from other resort is the amazing gourmet experience like none other. Bali, Indonesia An Exotic Getaway
Weather The temperature varies between 20 – 33 Celsius depending on the season. Although the temperature doesn’t change much, the deciding factor for a great holiday is the monsoon. Wet season begins around October to April and high humidity as well as daily rain is expected. The best time to visit Bali is during dry season, from June to August, when humidity is low and refreshing cool breeze flows all day long.
Get to know Bali, the Island of the Gods, lies to the east of Java Island in between Java Sea and the Indian Ocean. The island is known for its diverse landscapes, from the green mountains to vast blue sea, rugged coastlines to sandy beaches, and lush rice terraces to barren volcanoes. With attractions like Kuta Beach and the chic Seminyak, South Bali is the most visited part of the island. But if you want to experience the real Bali, centreal Bali is where the spirit and culture of the island are most accessible. To the west is West Bali National Park and exceptional dive sites. The old capital city lies in the north where you’ll also find quiet black sand beaches. Last but not least, the majestic Mount Agung dominates the secluded East Bali where the coastline is lined with laid back villages. Bali is the melting pot between Chinese Buddhist and Indian Hindi with a little touch of western culture, resulting in its own unique culture and art, including traditional and modern dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metalwork, and music.

Lose yourself in an island paradise filled with surprises and surround by sparkling sea. Surf on an awesome wave, stroll on powdery beaches, or just hangout at a resort, Bali is perfect for every family, honeymooner, and leisure travelers. More than that, Bali evokesa sense of paradise that goes beyond just a sea, sand, and sun – it’s a piece of heaven!
Transportation Bali is accessible by plane and ferry. International travelers from Australia and major cities across Southeast Asia can take a direct international flight to Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali. If you are traveling domestically, there are a number of low cost airlines flying in from major cities in Indonesia, as well as ferry service serving between Java and Bali. Getting around Bali on a rented car or motorbike can be quite dangerous and confusing as the streets are barely coping with the rapid development. Local transportation like metered taxi and bemo, Bali’s traditional transport, are safer choices if you are in South Bali. Moreover, getting around on a bicycle provides a different experience as you would be able to soak in everything along the way.

EAT Cultures and traditions in Indonesia are as diverse as its number of islands, and Bali is no exception. Balinese cuisine uses a wide variety of spices cooked with fresh vegetable, pork, chicken, duck, and seafood, but rarely beef since Balinese are predominantly Hindu. Dishes you should not miss are Lawar and Babi Guling.Lawar is probably the most common traditional dish in Bali. It’s a mixture of finely chopped meat, vegetables, coconut, and spices. Although the ingredient may change from place to place, there are mainly 2 types of Luwar – White Luwar and Red Luwar. White Luwar often does not contain meat while Red Luwar might contain blood to enhance the flavour. BBQ is the simplest type of cooking found in almost all cuisines around the world. Babi Guling is the flavourful Balinese BBQ made from spit-roast pig. The whole pig is spiced, skewered, and slow roasted over charcoal fire. The result is juicy, tender, and flavourful meat with exceptionally delicious crispy skin.
DRINK As a tourist destination, Bali packs an incredible range of beverages, including local fruit juices, spirits, wine, beer, and an extensive choice of well-known international spirits and beers.Tuak is Bali’s palm wine made from palms, yeast and sugar, and often served during Gawai festivals, weddings, hosting of guests and traditional festivals. However, Tuak is very easy to find and inexpensive so you don’t need to be at a festival to try one.Putting alcohol aside, the Kopyor is a popular dessert drink and it’s considered a delicacy in Indonesia and Bali. Kopyor is an abnormally developed coconut with super sweet, spongy or jelly-like, coconut meat, and it’s a must-have if you are in Bali.

Phuket, Thailand The Andaman Pearl
Transportation The easiest way to arrive in Phuket is by air. Phuket International Airport handles very frequent domestic flights from Bangkok and direct international flights from the region, including Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. However, more and more charter flights from China, Korea, Australia, Europe, and Middle East are flying directly to Phuket during high season. Since Phuket is a large island, getting around requires some kind of transportation. If you feel confident, renting a car is a good and safer option compared to a motorbike. Although taxi is available, it’s a little more adventurous to try local transportations like ‘Songthaews’ or Phuket style Tuk-Tuk. These local transportations will take you anywhere, but be sure to negotiate the final price before you jump in.
Get to know Phuket has been the world’s tourist destination since the 1980s and it continues to welcome millions of travelers from Europe, USA, China, and Middle East every year. As Phuket is the largest island in Thailand, you rarely get the sense that you’re surrounded by water. The huge island covers the area of 543 km., excluding its satellite islands, and it’s home to world-class dive sites, silky soft beaches, and myriad of island paradises around the main island. Most tourists flock to the west coast of Phuket where quiet and pristine beaches like Mai Khao Beach command the northern part and upbeat party explodes in the southern part with Patong Beach leading the table. Inner Phuket is an expanse of fertile hills with mangrove forests, fishing villages, rubber and pineapple plantations, small Muslim communities and shrimp farms, but these locations are rarely visited by tourists. Beside the main island, small islands to the south and the east feature unbelievable beaches, sparkling clear water, beautiful coral reef, and tons of spectacular natural wonders. Phuket is home to a diversity of ethnic groups, culture, architectural influence, and fine cuisine. Although the majority of the population is Thai, there is a significant number of Chinese, Malay, and Peranakans, infusing their cultures into the root of Phuket.

Meadin.com, the subordinate brand of Hangzhou East Sunnet Technology Co., Ltd., has attracted extensive attention from Chinese local Hotels, especially from chain groups. The brand rankings released exclusively by Meadin.com is created to help hotels to better focus on their brand operation. Some surveys found that the neglect of the brand effect would increasingly influence the long-term development of the hotels. But the brand standard in China is vague. So many hoteliers don’t know how to operate the hotel brands. Meadin Brand Index (MBI) provides index data that reflect the brands (including relative brands of hotels and suppliers) influence for a period of time. The data analyzing brand communication and marketing management is significant for enterprises and relevant industry personages.

GALUNCHAI SUDHIKAM Director & National Sales Director of Better Way (Thailand) Co., LTD.
BETTER WAY, THE COMPANY OF WHICH OWNS THE WELL-KNOWN “MISTINE” BRAND
The Better Way Company was initiated from a small direct sales business of single level marketing. Passed many year of experiences, today, the company is taking care of many direct sales brand, including the three popular brands; Mistine, the top cosmetic direct sales distributor of Thailand with good quality product in an affordable price. Friday, the catalog offering every home product you would need. And Faris brand where you can find beauty care product imported from Japan. Mr. Kalunchai explains that as the company has worked on direct sales business for many years, the direct sales is always the first to concern. This leads to dinstinct responsibility of company's sales department where their job is not focusing on mastering the product information but to recruite a lot of effective sellers in order to achieve direct sales' principal which “ the product needs to directly reach the customers as thoroughly”. To do so, Division Sales Managers in each region around Thailand have to take care of recruitment in their region while Sales Managers taking care of them in overall.
WORKING WITH BETTER WAY
For over 20 years working with Better Way, Mr. Galuchai has fed with a full experience in Sales area. He started as a Division Sales Managers in 1994 and has gained knowledge and strategies throughout those years. He is now a Director & National Sales Director with thousand of employees all over Thailand in his care. He said that the attitude which everyone here all share is to never give up to any burden. What ever happen, we will fight together. Every time the problem comes, we get together discuss and make an absolute decision, then manage as planed right away. This working style is what makes our company’s character prominent leading us to be able to adjust ourselves to the problem in time. Another outstanding thing about Better Way is that the company values the employees. Everyone is family. Everyone takes part in driving the company forward; therefore, in making any decision, we will concern on circumstances to the employees first. For example, when we came up with an idea of online channel, we knew that it would be mainly for advertising our product because we don’t want to compete with our own selllers. We want them to have a happy job.
CURRUNT ECONOMIC SITUATION AND WAY TO ENCOUTER
For the past 2-3 years, economy has been slow down not like many years ago when the company’s growth rate increased 20-30 percent every year. Mr. Galunchai admits that the recession right now can be said to be harder for the company than 1997 Asian financial crisis (Tom Yam Goong crisis). “What we need to do is to adjust ourselves to the condition immediately and work even harder” he said, believeing that the ecomonic situation will be better in the second half of the year. What we do to deal with the situation is, mainly, try to open more channel to privide our product to more customers by recruiting more seller. Also, the price of the product is concerned. We need to promote the product in the middle rate price more broadly. Apart from direst sales buisiness, Better Way is also having joint ventures with companies in three countries near Thailand: Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos. The Better Way company has worked with countries nearby for many years before AEC is concerned. The outcome from these projects is going well, especially in Myanmar. Furthermore, the company as well whoelsale exports the product to other countries, mainly to China and even Africa, which helps the company to keep up its financial quiet a lot. Mr. Galunchai explains the company’s plan that it is made year to year for flexibility is needed, as we all know that the economic situation can always swing swiftly. There are problems that we can’t control so being flexible is a way to lower the damage. Number of competitors is increasing everyday and when the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) opened officially, he believes that the competition will be even more intense. However, he doesn’t see as a burden and emphasises that all that the company has to do is compete with itself to improve capability, making people willing to use our product.
WORKING METHOD TO SUCCESSFUL LIFE
From his long experience in work life, Mr. Galunchai suggests that the most important thing in working is to understand that no one can provide the best work alone so you have to learn having solidarity among your team. Strategy can be discussed but a good team needs to be taken care properly and then the whole company can move forward steadily. The clear communication is also concerned when it comes to work, otherwise there will surely be a miscommunication that sometimes leads to a serious issue. Another significant opinion from Mr. Galunchai is that our capabilities are not that different. But what really makes it different is the ambition to achieve our goal. If we never give up and try to adjust ourselves in each coming situation, we can all be successful. And after all, love what you do. The last point is what makes him come to the office with enthusiasm every day. “I have never been reluctant to come to work because I know I will meet my warm family and the exciting challenge waiting here”
