SAPPORO IS BACK! FLY DAILY AND DIRECT WITH THAI AIRASIA X TRAVEL DURING SUMMER THROUGH WINTER PROMOTIONAL FARE STARTS AT ONLY 3,990 THB* PER TRIP Thai AirAsia X continues to add highly demanded routes by commencing daily direct flights “Bangkok-Sapporo”, kicking off on 10 April 2018 at a promotional fare starting at only 3,990 THB* per trip. Book 18-28 January 2018 for travel from 10 April – 27 October 2018. Premium Flat Bed Class seats are also available at only 12,900 THB* per trip. Find out all the details at www.airasia.com. Mr. Nadda Buranasiri, CEO of Thai AirAsia X, said that the airline is very grateful to be bringing back flights from Don Mueang to Sapporo, capital city of the island of Hokkaido. The route is the first addition by Thai AirAsia X following the lifting of Thailand’s red flag by the International Civil Aviation Organization, or ICAO. Hokkaido is a very high potential destination and is already second only to Tokyo in terms of most popular place to visit in Japan among Thai travellers. The island can be visited year-round with distinct charms both in the summer and winter and is best known for its wealth of seafood, especially the ever popular Taraba Crab. Visitors can enjoy Sapporo’s catchy travel concept “Eat Crab, Watch Bears, Go Skiing, See the Lavenders” with a just about 7-hour flight from Bangkok. 22 NOW TRAVEL ASIA JANUARY/FABRUARY 2018
The addition of Sapporo offers a new travel option for both Thai and foreign travellers, including those in Japan who wish to fly low fares to Thailand. Thai AirAsia X is an expert in the Japanese market and is always seeking out new opportunities. This year, Mr. Nadda believes the aviation industry will likely grow significantly with many airlines planning expansion. The high activity should prove beneficial to both the airline and tourism industries and offer great value to travellers. The optimism follows Thai AirAsia X in 2017 finding success from its strategy of continually adding flight frequencies and strengthening its network in north Asia. Thai AirAsia X currently flies direct from Bangkok (Don Mueang Airport) to Seoul, South Korea three times a day; Tokyo, Japan two times a day; Osaka, Japan two times a day and Shanghai, China one time a day. In 2018, Thai AirAsia X is targeting acquiring 3 more Airbus A330 airplanes to finish the year with a fleet of 9 in support of its expanding network of destinations and flights.
To celebrate the new route, AirAsiaGO, online travel booking website and AirAsia partner, is offering a special 4 day 3 night hotel + flight + tax deal starting at only 11,999 THB per person available for booking 19-28 January 2018 for travel from 10 April-27 October 2018. At the same time, the site is providing promo coupon code AAGTH12 for a 12 percent discount when booking a hotel at www.airasiago.com from today to 31 March 2018 for stays between now and 31 December 2018. AirAsia BIG Loyalty members get the privilege of booking Don Mueang-Sapporo before anyone else at the promotional fare of only 3,990 THB* between 14.00 hrs and 23.00 hrs on 18 January 2018. TAIPEI
Taipei is a tough little city whose beauty lies in its blend of Chinese culture with a curious fusion of Japanese, Southeast Asian and American influences. Taipei’s oddness is one of its charms. It may be inspired by the kawaii (cutesy) culture of Japan, but there’s a lot of home-grown humour in there too. In the puppet museum you will find a strip-tease marionette oozing knock-kneed naughtiness; the idea of chocolate sauce on a steak is accepted; themed restaurants transport you to a world where you eat hotpot from a toilet bowl or in a hospital ward for dinner; and one of the top souvenir items of the city is a larger-than-life cock-shaped pineapple sponge cake. 50 NOW TRAVEL ASIA JANUARY/FABRUARY 2018

RAINBOW VILLAGE Moving on to find a pretty sight at Rainbow Village. Rainbow Village wasn’t always pretty since the beginning. In fact, the village was originally a veteran village where Kuomintang soldiers took refuge in Taiwan. The village got old as time went by and renovation plan was put forward. However, during the demolition a veteran named Huang Yung-Fu started to paint the old building walls with colourful cartoons and pictures. His work caught attentions of young generation and artists across Taiwan who participated in the work. The village eventually became a famous attraction in Taichung and received government protection as a cultural landmark. Although there are only a few houses left in the village, Rainbow Village is still a unique destination visited constantly by visitors at Sun Moon Lake. Discover art and tea, and feel spirited away at Jiufen. The city was a booming gold mine town in 1950s, but it started to decline as the mine ran dry. Although depleted of gold, the city still has its unique character that makes it a destination for tourists. Visitors love the nostalgic vibe of Jiufen with charming wooden homes and retro style teahouses with distinctive red lanterns in every corner. Some teahouses also offer traditional tea brewing session to give you the real Taiwanese tea drinking ceremony experience. Moreover, you can taste local specialties and buy local handicrafts without breaking your bank. Besides its nostalgic atmosphere and amazing teahouses, Jiufen also boasts fascinating views of the Pacific Ocean from several scenic points. Visitors will get to buy local handicrafts, taste traditional dishes, experience 360 degree views from the cable car, and visit Formosan Aboriginal Village. Another highlight event happens in spring where thousands of people join the annual “Sun Moon Lake Swimming Carnival” for an exciting 3 km swim across the lake. There are a few landmarks to explore at Sun Moon Lake. Starting at Wenwu Temple or Guanyu Temple at the foot of a hill with spectacular views of the lake. Devoted to Guanyu, the God of War and Honesty, and Confucius, the God of Intelligence, the temple is guarded by 2 giant red lions at the entrance in front of 366 steps that lead to the main shrine where the statue of Guanyu and Confucius stand. The temple palace style architecture takes after the architecture of the Forbidden City in Beijing. Originally Sun Moon Lake had 2 temples along its shore, but after Japanese occupation of Taiwan, a dam was built in 1934 and the 2 temples were drowned. A new temple was built at the foot of a hill to compensate the loss of the 2 original temples, and it became the famous Wenwu Temple we know today. Must do: If you love cycling, you must not miss the Sun Moon Lake cycling track along the lake which CNN ranked one of the top 10 best cycling track in the world. While Mt. Chokai is technically climbable year-round, it is completely covered in snow for the majority of the year. However, from August until around the second or third week of October the trails are free of snow. It is during this time that most people venture to the top. There are nine different trails to get to the top, but the most popular (and easiest) is the Hokodate Trail, which starts in Kisakata, Akita. This is the trail of choice among people climbing a mountain for the first time. The first half of the trail is mainly stone stairs. Fear not, though, because this changes after the halfway point. The halfway point is marked by a cabin overlooking a beautiful lake.

The Avatar Mountains
I
If you’ve seen the movie Avatar, you’ve already seen Zhangjiajie National Forest Park – but don’t let that stop you seeing them in real life. These mountains were the inspiration behind the Hallelujah Mountains in the mythical world of Pandora in the movie Avatar, and it’s easy to see that when you visit. In fact, the government has even changed the name of one of the mountains in the park to “Avatar Mountain”. The park, however, does offer so much more than just that one set of mountains. 66 NOW TRAVEL ASIA JANUARY/FABRUARY 2018
Zhangjiajie National Park Zhangjiajie is located in the west of Hunan Province, over 1,000 kilometers from both Shanghai and Beijing. Zhangjiajie National Park isn’t actually located in the city of Zhangjiajie, and to reach it, it will take a 30 kilometres or 50 minutes drive to Wulingyuan. There are a lot of interesting places in the park: caves and authentic local villages. But using a drone inside the caves, even the biggest ones, turned out to be quite impractical. Everyone who visits the park has a choice: either take a walk on the lower lanes between the 400-meters tall vertical rocky pillars gazing up at themor climb the mountain with the help of 360-meter tall Bailong elevator. You can take the bus and observe rocks from the top. The park
itself is not actually Pandora with its flying rocks, lianas, waterfalls and even dragons. But if one mentally turns the whole picture upside down, the similarity will be obvious. The Zhangjiajie Park is a part of Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area. It is declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and the Zhangjiajie Park itself was listed as a UNESCO Global Geopark. The distances are impressive: sometimes there can be no connection between the parts of the park. But every section has its own charm: the rock pillars of different height, pagodas, pavilions, rivers, arches and bridges. Lanes lead you from the hillside downwards: it will take you quite a long time to follow such a lane.
Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Footbridge The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Footbridge is also home to the highest public bungy platform in the world with a drop of 250 meters. The central suspension span is spectacular not only for having glass panels along its entire length but also for the tapered deck that is 15 meters wide at the ends of the bridge before narrowing to a width of only 6 meters in the center. The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Footbridge is one of several attractions within the privately owned park that is located just 20 minutes east of the famous Zhangjiajie National Park that inspired the look of the Avatar movies. Other attractions include a cliffwalk, mountain elevator, slide, waterfalls, caves, a smaller low level glass bridge, zip line and a boat ride. For most visitors, the visual highlight of a trip to the Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge will be viewing the gorge between their toes through glass panels 2 inches thick. But for those few who are brave enough to take their thrills to the next level, the ultimate fall awaits them on two separate platforms located several meters below the main deck.

ompared to flashy Emirati neighbours like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the capital of Oman is a breath of fresh, sea air. Muscat is famous for dazzling souks and superb seafood, but its terrain brings the biggest thrills. This port city on the Gulf of Oman is backed by the arid Hajar mountains, meaning you can trek deserts at dawn, spot dolphins at sundown, and enjoy plenty of effusive Omani hospitality in between.
To see a remarkable mosque Towards the western end of Muscat’s long urban sprawl, the suburb of Ghubrah is where you’ll find the stunning Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Opened in 2001, this is the only mosque in Oman open to non-Muslims and one of the largest in the Gulf, with room for an estimated 20,000 worshippers in the two prayer halls and surrounding courtyard. The mosque itself sits within a walled compound with a minaret at each corner, plus a fifth, larger minaret halfway along the northern wall. The overall style is a kind of strippeddown contemporary Islamic, clad in vast quantities of white and red-brown marble. The minarets offer a nod towards 84 NOW TRAVEL ASIA JANUARY/FABRUARY 2018
traditional Egyptian architecture, while other decorative touches were inspired by Omani and Persian traditions. Other architectural details, such as the impressive latticed golden dome over the central prayer hall, are entirely original. Visiting the mosque, note that its popularity and limited opening hours mean that it often gets absolutely overrun with coach parties by around 10am. The earlier you can visit the better. Visitors are required to dress appropriately (no shorts or uncovered arms, while women are required to cover their heads) and to remove their shoes before entering either prayer hall. Under-10s are not allowed into the main prayer hall.

For palatial modern architecture A natural starting place to gaze at regal architecture is Al Alam Palace, a resplendent gold and blue royal residence. At the heart of Old Muscat is Al Alam Palace (“Flag Palace”), the most important of the six royal residences of the ruling monarch, Sultan Qaboos, which are dotted around Muscat, Salalah and Sohar. Built in 1972, the palace is Oman’s most flamboyant example of contemporary Islamic design, with two long wings centred on a colourful, cube-like central building, its flat, overhanging roof supported by extravagantly flared blue and gold columns. The palace complex is impressively stage-managed, approached via a long pedestrianized boulevard framed by two arcaded colonnades, with copious amounts of highly polished marble covering every available surface. On either side stretches a cluster of impressive government buildings: huge, snow-white edifices sporting crenellated rooftops, traditional wooden balconies and window shutters. Look right as you approach the palace and you’ll also see a fine section of the original city walls snaking up the hillside, punctuated with three large watchtowers en route.
MUST KNOW The palace isn’t open to the public, although you can get a good view of the facade from the iron gates at the front.
To access breathtaking hiking terrain Northeast of Nizwa rises the great limestone massif of the Jebel Akhdar, centred on the Saiq Plateau (pronounced “Sirq”, and often spelt Sirq or Seeq). This is one of Oman’s more unusual natural curiosities: an extensive upland plateau, lying at an altitude of around 2000m and ringed by craggy summits to the north and the vertiginous gorge of Wadi al Ayn to the south. The plateau has been extensively farmed for at least a thousand years thanks to its temperate Mediterranean climate, which allows for the cultivation of many types of fruit which cannot survive the heat of the lowlands: peaches, pears, grapes, apples and pomegranates all flourish here, along with a wide range of vegetables and the area’s famed roses. The plateau is particularly beguiling during the hot summer months, and deliciously cool after the heat of the plains below. Lace up your walking boots for the rocky C38 trail from Muscat’s Riyam Park into the hills; rewards for this two-hour exertion include bird’s-eye views of the port and fortresses, and blissful mountain solitude.
TIP Hiking is at its best from October to April.

Exploring the Fjords of Musandam on a Dhow At the northeastern most tip of the Arabian peninsula (and separated from the rest of Oman by a wide swathe of UAE territory) the dramatic Musandam peninsula is perhaps the most scenically spectacular area in the entire Gulf. Often described as “The Norway of Arabia”, the peninsula boasts a magical combination of mountain and maritime landscapes, as the towering red-rock Hajar mountains fall precipitously into the blue waters of the Arabian Gulf, creating a labyrinthine system of steepsided fjords (khors), cliffs and islands, most of them inaccessible except by boat. Musandam remains one of Oman’s great wildernesses, with a largely untouched natural environment ranging from the pristine waters of the coast, where you can see frolicking dolphins, basking sharks and the occasional whale, through to the wild uplands of the jebel, dotted with fossils and petroglyphs.
