Myanmar! THERE ARE 2 THINGS WE RECOMMEND YOU TO TAKE WITH YOU WHEN VISITING MYANMAR

– a smile and friendliness.

27

nowtravelasia.com March/April 2014

Before I had a chance to visit Myanmar I didn’t expect Burmese people to be so welcoming. I only know that Myanmar was isolated since 1962 and most news I heard were political news. In reality, the cities in Myanmar are full of fascinating faces waiting to be explored. Hotels and restaurants are popping up faster than anyone could imagine, and international investors are pouring into Myanmar. It seems like modern world just magically appear immediately right after the sleeping tiger awake.

28

nowtravelasia.com March/April 2014

In this edition of NOW Travel Asia, we decided to explore 2 former capital city of Myanmar. The Kingdom where the people today still live a traditional life around the modern city center. While Yangon is our second destination, it is the most modern and civilized city. And Although Naypyidaw is now the capital, Yangon remains is the center of economy and commercial, and the most colourful city in Myanmar.

Mandalay

Tip : Entering a religious site in Myanmar requires you to follow strict codes. Shoes and socks need to be taken off and leave at the entrance. Sandals are a preferable choice if you but make sure to bring a plastic bag to put your sandals in. Short skirts, pants, and tank tops are forbidden in all religious sites.

Mandalay is the third largest city in Myanmar after Yangon and Naypyidaw. Built at the foot of Mandalay Hill, the last royal capital of Myanmar Kingdom is home to majestic traditional architectures and heritages from King Mindon time such as the Royal Palace. Today Mandalay is developed as the commercial, cultural, and tourism center of Northern Myanmar, as well as an important commercial link between India and China.

The night scene was quite tempting, but we had to save the energy for an early city exploration!

Evidences of lives lost and independence taken still linger in the atmosphere of the palace, but these lost are overcome by fascinating traditional Myanmar art & architecture found throughout the site. As we thoroughly explored the Royal Palace exploration, we stumbled across Shwenandaw Kyaung Temple just outside the palace wall. The old temple was built during King Mindong time, but its timeless architecture still stands strongly against time, showcasing the skill of Mandalay craftsmen. It is fascinating to just imagine the golden time of Myanmar Kingdom when the unique teak architecture of Shwenandaw Kyaung Temple was shining bright with gold.

Sule Pagoda The Heart of Yangon

Paying Homage to Botataung Pagoda

Located in the heart of Yangon for more than 2,000 years, the octagonal bell-shaped Sule Pagoda seduces photographers around the world to come and press their camera. Originally, Sule Pagoda was surrounded by a small moat. Later in 19th century, the British decided to make Sule Pagoda the city center and begin building a road network around the pagoda. Since Sule Pagoda is the city center, a stroll around the surrounding area is the best way to observe the daily life of the people in Yangon.

Thousands of travelers visit Botataung Pagoda to pay homage to the sacred hair of Buddha stored within the pagoda. The highlight of the pagoda is the Bo Bo Gyi shrine which Burmese worships for protection and luck. Bo Bo Gyi is also known to grant wishes instantly. According to our guide, Burmese, including kings, love to build temples and pagodas because they believe the good deeds will contribute to their wealth and fame in the next life. So, there is no surprise to countless religious sites around the country.

Shewdagon Pagoda , The Icon of Yangon

eeping the best for last, Shewdagon Pagoda stands majestically for more than 2,500 years. The largest golden monument on Earth shoots 99 meters up in the sky and can be easily spotted when landing on Yangon International Airport. The grand pagoda sits on "Singu-Ttara" hill in the heart of Yangon and its base is surrounded by hundreds of miniature pagodas. Interestingly, the pagoda top contains 5,448 diamonds, with the largest one as big as 72 carats, as well as 2,317 rubies. The golden colour of Shwedagon Pagoda comes from the actual 3 tons of gold covering the pagoda which will be renewed every 20 years by Myanmar expert craftsmen.

Later the British colonial government also expanded and modernized the city. The most prominent landmark is the Shwedagon Pagoda, nearly 2600 years old and one of the most sacred and holy place for all Myanmar Buddhists.

MANDALAY Mandalay was the last capital of the Konbaung Dynasty of Imperial Myanmar before the country was annexed by the British in 1886 A.D and exiled King Thibaw to Ratanagiri in India. It is also regarded as the cultural centre of the capital. Many artists and artisans make Mandalay their home town. The Mandalay Palace, built by King Mindon in 1859 A.D is one of the main attractions. Although most of the original buildings were destroyed during the 2nd World War many are now re-built.

The most remarkable sites are the Watch Tower, partially destroyed in an earthquake and the Mei Nu Oak Kyaung or the Brick the very powerful queen of that time and donated to the Chief Abbot and the Bagaya Teak Monastery.

Many of the pagodas are in ruins but inside these structures beautiful wall paintings are still very much fresh as if painted only yesterday. The mightiest structure at Bagan is the Dhammayangyi stupa, the loftiest is the Thatbyinnyu and the most artistic and exquisite is the Ananda Temple.
