T
he 6th Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR), co-hosted by Thailand’s Ministry of Interior through its Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) on 22-26 June 2014 at the Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld served as pivotal platform for regional disaster risk reduction. The forum brought 19 government ministers, high-level officials from 19 countries as well as practitioners, academic experts and representatives from the private sector, civil society organizations and stakeholders from 25 countries, totalling 5,278 delegates to convene under the main theme “Promoting Investments for Resilient Nations and Communities”.
The 6th AMCDRR presented significant opportunity to identify strategic mechanism and policy for disaster risk reduction at regional level. At the same time, highlight priorities from this forum served as fundamental for the drafting of the Hyogo Framework for Action 2 (HFA 2). Most importantly, member states in the Asia-Pacific region have endorsed the Bangkok Declaration, which adopted the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy of His Majesty the King of Thailand as guidelines for disaster risk reduction. This is by recognizing the importance of
NOW27p3-70.indd 40
people-centered development models, which reduce the impact of uncertainties and increase self-immunity of local communities. The paper also stresses the need to focus on participation and partnership of stakeholder groups including the public and private sectors as well as all concerned organizations on several issues. These include: enhancing resilience at local levels; promoting inclusion and volunteer/community-based networks; promoting comprehensive school safety and strengthening private sector investments and commitments on disaster risk reduction. Furthermore, the paper emphasizes the need to promote the use and further development of science, technology and innovation as well as applying technology in early warning and disaster risk data sharing. All these are to lead to one ultimate goal that is to push forward disaster risk management into national policies as well as national development plans for communities and the country as a whole. In addition to the Bangkok Declaration, the forum also endorsed the “Asia Pacific regional HFA2 implementation plan and priority actions” highlighting nine contributions: 1) integrating actions for disaster risk reduction and the adaptation to climate change; 2) take serious actions on disaster risk reduction; 3) further development and improvement of data on disaster risk reduction; 4) enhancing the role of private sector on
7/15/2557 BE 1:52 PM
disaster risk reduction; 5) strengthening cooperation at local levels in managing risk; 6) recognizing the important of participation and partnership of stakeholder groups; 7) encourage the adaptation of disaster risk reduction actions into law; 8) enhancing the role of women as a driving force on disaster risk reduction; and 9) introducing practical policy on disaster risk management. Each country has agreed to formalize guidelines for disaster risk reduction in accordance to the Hyogo Framework for Action 2 (HFA 2) in order to create sustainable mechanism in reducing and managing disaster risk. Thailand will present the priority actions on disaster risk reduction under the Bangkok Declaration at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai, Japan, in March 2015, and be a part in making Asia-Pacific a strong, safe and resilient region to disasters.

“Next Asana (posture), Paschimottanasana - sit down, stretch your legs forward and bend your body down” “Ouch!”
T
he first voice was from my yoga instructor while the second voice was from the occasional sharp pain running down from my sacrum down my left leg which I have been living with for years. My yoga instructor, who knows Indian Ayurvedic therapy, took notice of my pain and began asking me about it in detail before suggesting that the pain could be from acute spasm in the muscle and joint in the sacrum area. Since her Ayurvedic hospital in Thailand doesn’t offer warm oil therapy, she recommended me to visit an Ayurvedic hospital in “Kerala”, southern India. India was my destination for many occasions, and I’ve heard the reputation of Kerala as the center of the thousand years old traditional Indian Ayurveda and yoga. Most was my India trips were quite the adventurous and active trips, and just thinking about 3 weeks therapy without an adventure made me unsure of the plan. But rethinking it, the pain would be a tremendous obstacle in my yoga training and my life if nothing is done.
far from the cafeteria are the highly sought after private cottages. There are only 6 cottages here and if you really want to stay in it, you probably would have to reserve it a year in advance! For me, I couldn’t wait that long so I settled for a regular room with 2 single beds, a study table, a bathroom, and a shared therapy room, which is no less comfortable at all.
With all my belongings kept in place, I excitedly headed to the diagnosis room with full curiosity. Dr. PMS was very thorough in his questions about my condition, symptoms, and lifestyle, all of which contribute to how healthy I am and my health risks. The result was a 2 weeks Ayurveda massage of oil therapy to allow the healing of my injured muscle and joint by herb infused oil, follow by a week of oil and herbal ball massage. The herbal ball is the combination of mashed rice prepared with milk and herbs to rejuvenate body tissues through the skin.
Early December marked my new type of adventure. I flew to Bangalore before connecting the route to Kerala via train. Surprisingly, Bangalore train station was clean, modern, and the train was very punctual. The 8 hours ride was interestingly swift as I was lost in enjoying Indian style snacks, tea, coffee, and hawker food that were constantly available. The Ayurveda hospital I was heading to belongs to an Ayurveda doctor who taught my yoga instructor. I got off the train at Palakkad train station where Dr. PMS Raveendranath, the owner of the hospital, and his wife were eagerly waiting for my arrival. Before I left Bangkok, my yoga instructor has already filled me in with some background on the doctor. Inspired one part by a friend of his father who is a famous Ayurveda doctor and another part by his father who is a Sanskrit expert, Dr. PMS set to be an Ayurveda doctor since he was a boy. After a 45 minute drive, I was in front of Poonthottam Ayurvedashram. The place was named after Dr. PMS’ family name, and to my surprise, it didn’t feel or look like a hospital at all! Instead, the vibe recreated a medium size resort atmosphere, surrounded by rice paddies, forest, neat rubber tree fields, and tropical fruit plantations like banana and coconut plantations. Beside the obvious hospital facilities like the patient building, medicine room, and diagnosis room, a little walk will take you the cafeteria with panoramic view of the wonderful surroundings. Not nowtravelasia.com 101 July/August 2014

Further, I was prescribed some herbal medicines to take simultaneously with the oil treatment in order to boost my health from within. During my therapy session, I learnt from Dr. PMS that, apart from massage, oil, and herbal ball therapies, Shirodhara or running warm oil on the head, and running herbal water made from nutritious grains on the head are other common Ayurveda treatments as well. With an exception of 1 essential difference, the treatment here is mostly similar to other Ayurveda hospitals where a doctor diagnoses your condition and prescribes an appropriate therapy. At Poonthottam, the doctors take extra attention to the patients by literally doing the therapy processes themselves! And the practice derives from the belief of Dr. PMS who is firmly convinced that doctors should be the one in direct contact with the patients. Since Dr. PMS was born in a strict Brahman family and grew up among Tantra and Mantra rituals, every therapy session would begin with a small Mantra ritual. The peaceful voice got me into the deep relaxation state before the doctor slowly began running warm oil on my body and massage gently. The oil was constantly kept warm by another

staff, and half way through the session, I changed to the lying face down position and, again, the doctor repeated the process. The minute the warm oil ran through my body was my favourite moment. It felt gentle, warm, moist, and very relaxing that I even fell asleep sometimes. Each therapy session (once a day, morning or evening session) lasted about 1 hour. Another half an hour is required in oil therapy session to allow the body to soak in the richness. But an oil therapy followed by a herbal ball treatment doesn’t require any extra time, and a staff would wash the oil off with green bean powder as it removes the excess oil better than soap. During the whole treatment process, you should strictly
avoid heavy exercise, including long walks and yoga, because the healing body is extra prone to injury. As for the food, vegetarian meals and delightful afternoon gingercaraway milk served with fruits are provided. My free time was spent reading books inside my room or in the garden, taking photos, wondering around the resort (or hospital), and strolling through Cherpulaseeri for a little shopping and a refreshing blended mosumbi.
Three weeks flew by very quickly. Being surrounded by nature with only sufficient facilities was a great experience and I didn’t see myself as a patient at all. More importantly, a memorable gift I received on this trip were the friendliness, kindness, and hospitality of India.

years ago, during period of Kingdom of Sukhothai, where the legendary tradition has begun. The first Barge Procession was made to welcome King Phrasrisadtha Sriratthana Langka Thavip, the nephew of PorKhun Par Muang, when he returned from Langka. In year 1357, during the period of Ayutthaya, reign of King TriLokanat. He has declared the royal family law, many chapters in the law described the Royal Barge Procession. For example, the “Asarayut” royal ceremony will be held in 11th month. It is the cast lots barge racing between Samorachai, royal barge of the King and Kraisoramuk, royal barge of the Queen. The prediction is: if the King’s barge wins, it will be drought. If the Queen’s barge wins, the land will be plentifully.
100 years later, during the reign of King Naresuan. The king and his soldiers marched from Ayutthaya by river on the Suwannahong, the royal barge, to attack Mo Ta Ma. He has given the name “Phrapichai” to lead the barge procession. The beauty of the Royal Barge Procession was described in the book called “Li Lit Talang Pai” by Somdej Krom Praporanuchitchinorod. Later on, during year 1656-1688, reign of King Narayana. There was the evidence described the beauty of the Royal Barge Procession, there were 4 lines plus the royal procession in the middle, there were more than a hundred barges in the procession. It was called “Krabuan Petpuang”. Mr.Nicholas Gervaise, one of the French diplomatic corps,
was recorded in the book called “History of Siam”. He described the great barge procession as “There is nothing to compare with the beauty of the great barge procession, consist of 200 barges. The Barges were float in pair, the paddlers were well trained, and every one of them wore hat, shirt, kneeband and armband, which featured gold. The paddlings were according to the same rhythm, even the paddle made from gold. The paddling sound match the rhythm of the King praise song”.

You wouldn’t believe what 20 minute drive from Hangzhou city center can take you. The modern world seems to disappear as you drive through North Peak among bamboo forest and verdant valleys of cascading tea fields. Instead of re-modeling the setting to fit the hotel, Amanfayun nurtures best of what has
been and what still is in a way that allows you to experience the essence of a culture and location.

ORIGINAL & LUXURIOUS AMANFAYUN, HANGZHOU
The charming resort features original village layout that captures the spirit of traditional Chinese village where stone pathways lead to shaded courtyards, quaint restaurants and peaceful abodes. Amanfayun’s 42 dwellings were once actual village houses occupied by tea farmers. This unique nature of structure means that no rooms are alike, but what they all in common are luxury comfort of underfloor heating, airconditioning, and luxurious room amenities. All bathrooms have twin vanities shaped like shallow clay bowls. Rather than white ceramic baths, there are wood-clad tubs - big, deep and perfect for timeless soaking. Adjacent to the resort are 5 separate wellness buildings set amid groves of bamboo and tea bushes. The Spa offers eight treatment rooms, a reflexology room, a movement studio, a room dedicated to tai chi, yoga and meditation, and a Finishing Salon. Massage and body treatments draw from traditional Chinese massage and reflexology, as well as from ancient Asian healing therapies. Amanfayun’s signature spa menu reflects the resort’s natural setting and inspired by the region’s four distinct seasons – Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.

ith its alluring beauty, Hangzhou is the destination for travelers who wish to experience a piece of heaven. But let’s get to know Hangzhou a little better before we make our way there. As the capital of Zhejiang, Hangzhou covers the total area of 429 km2and it is one of seven ancient city destinations in China. Traditional arts and culture, natural wonders, and its 2,100 years of history surround the city, but beside breathtaking views, Hangzhou is known for its world-renown silk and “Longjing” tea. It is said that, “a sip of Longjing tea will make you feel refreshed all day!” When you visit Hangzhou, a place you cannot afford to miss is the stunning Xihu Lake (West Lake), one of the largest lakes in China. Xihu Lake is 2.8 km long from east to west and 3.3 km from north to south. This perfect leisure attraction is loved byboth tourists and locals who enjoy nature and outdoor activities, especially sailing and bike riding. The lake is beautiful all year round and surrounded by colours of floras, including Fragrant Osmantus that covers Hangzhou with beautiful fragrance in Autumn
(September – October). The intriguing charm of Xihu Lake earned it the reputation of “The Pearl of Hangzhou” and a place in UNESCO’s World Heritage site, and its beauty has been influencing the garden landscaping world across the world. As the sun leaves the sky, begins the impressive Hangzhou Impression West Lake. The visually spectacular show tells the tale of love, using the wonderful Xihu Lake as the background and performed by hundreds of actors and actresses and directed by the legendary director, Zhang Yimou. After soaking in the heavenly atmosphere of Xihu Lake, it’s now time to explore Hangzhou’s cultural wonders. Starting at the architectural wonder of Six Harmonies Pagoda to the south of Xihu Lake, the incredible pagoda was built in 970 during the Northern Song Dynasty. Standing majestically by Qiantang River, the pagoda seems to have 13 floors if you look from the outside, but as you climb up the stairs to witness the spectacular 360 views,

you’ll soon realize that there are actually 7 floors. Beside architecture, culture and traditions are the best way to learn about Hangzhou. Workmanship Demonstration Paviliondemonstrates traditional crafts and local arts on its 7,571 m2 of exhibition area. Here you can see Hangzhou’s traditional porcelain, textile, and local arts that reflect historic prosperity of Hangzhou in each different era.

nother cultural highlight is Longjing Village or Dragon Well Village. The name might sound very familiar because the village is known for producing the best green tea in China – Longjing Tea. The peaceful village is virtually covered in endless fields of tea and you can experience what the best tea taste like at Longjing Tea Museum as well as learn how to properly brew tea.
HANGZHOU IS KNOWN FOR ITS WORLD-RENOWN SILK AND “LONGJING” TEA. IT IS SAID THAT, “A SIP OF LONGJING TEA WILL MAKE YOU FEEL REFRESHED ALL DAY!”

Tea isn’t the only famous product of Hangzhou as the region is also known for its top quality silk. China National Silk Museum displays the vibrant history of Chinese silk. More than 140 pieces of invaluable silk dresses from different dynasty are on display at the museum and you can buy quality silk products here as well. After an insightful trip through the history of Hangzhou, take a break and stroll through He Fang Walking Streetfor a souvenir or two. The walking street is set among historic buildings and alleys where traditional architectures are preserved, so it feels like walking through the history of Hangzhou. Ling Yin Temple is a spiritually calming destination to end a trip. Ling Yin Temple or the “Temple of Soul’s Retreat” is embraced by the tranquility of lush green mountain, giving it a very peaceful atmosphere that sooth your soul. The formal entrance of the temple is the Hall of the Heavenly Kings that houses the Maitreya Buddha in his manifestation as the cloth bag monk, or the Laughing Buddha, and also houses more than 500 statues of Buddhist saints crafted by local craftsmen. If you crave a picture-perfect getaway adventure, come and experience the irresistible charm of Hangzhou’s natural wonders and its long history of tradition and culture that truly make it the Heaven on Earth nowtravelasia.com 119 July/August 2014

With 13 states and 3 federal territories, Malaysia combines the best of Asia for its cultural diversity and amazing holiday destinations. Out of the 13 states, Kuala Terengganu stands out as the epitome of rustic Malay charm and is called the “Gem of the East Coast”. LAKE K EN YIR
W
orking our way from outside in, we began our exploration from TasikKenyir or Lake Kenyir. The biggest man-made lake in South East Asia was created when Malaysia’s largest hydroelectric dam was built and over 200,000 hectares are flooded. Lake Kenyirbecame one of the most magnificent tourist destinations in Terengganu. It’s home to more than 14 cascading waterfalls, abundance of rapids and rivers, and over 340 islands dotting the landscape of the lake. It is also home to more than 8,000 species of flowers, 2,500 species of plants and trees, 800 species of orchids, and 300 species of fungus.
Departing from the airport, we took a 45 minute leisurely ride to Lake Kenyir Resort & Spa before checking into one of 136 individual traditional Malay timber chalets. The resort is located close to PengkalanGawi, the main entry point to Lake Kenyir, wherewe stopped by for some introduction to the lake. Surrounded by ancient rainforest, the lake and the national park flourish with an incredible assortment of flora and fauna, includingnumerous species of freshwater fish, rare ferns, exotic orchids, hornbills, elephants, and panthers. Our next stop took us to see the friendly giants at Kenyir Elephant Village. Thriving in their natural environment, the elephants are well-trained and offer the

opportunity for tourists to ride, play, and feed them under the supervision of the trainers. Although we would love to play with the gentle elephants for hours, but our first day of Lake Kenyir exploration started off quite late in the afternoon. We got back to the hotel, had a sumptuous dinner, and prepared for a little night festival at Kenyir Fest. The month-long festival happens every year from late April to late May or early June in order to promote Lake Kenyir at its most beautiful time of year. Quite unfortunately, we missed the exciting day activities like helicopter ride, fishing, power boat, cycling expedition, remote control boat demonstration, paintball, and folk sports, but nighttime cultural performances and arts, as well as tax-free sale were amazing! The action-packed second day started off with the serene morning scene of Lake Kenyir. We were advised to wear casual sport clothes and proper shoes as Kelah Sanctuary and Bewah Cave were on the schedule, and it’s time to really explore!

Departing from Gawi Jetty, the beauty of the lake slowly revealed itself. Countless islands, birds, trees, flowers, and fishes scattered throughout the lake and we were just stunned by the picture-perfect views. The trip was nearly 45 minutes but it felt like an instant as we arrived at Petang Island where Kelah (an endangered fish) breed and conserve. As Kelah requires clean, highly oxygenated streams to survive, you can imagine how pure Lake Kenyir’s environment is. After a 30 minute jungle trekking through clear water and shaded jungles, we arrived at Kehlah Sanctuary. The Kelah were very familiar with people and hundreds of them welcomed us when they hear people arrived. If you aren’t scared by a swarm of fish, you can actually swim with them!
Tip: No food and smoking are allowed at Kelah Sanctuary and jungle tracks. Time went by very quickly and it was time to say goodbye to the Kelah. The boat took us along the shore, and before we know it, we were floating right in front Bewah Cave. Locally known as GuaTahiKelawar, Bewah Cave provides the spectacular sights of towering limestone hills abound with unexplored secrets and mysteries. Incredible sight of stalactites and stalagmites revealed itself after a little climb up the stairs and into the dimly lit cave. Our guide brought along a torch and the cave sparkled as we explore through it. The cave also holds a valuable history when an archeologist from National Museum discovered the skeleton of the Neolithic man and ancient artifacts. Kelah Sanctuary and Bewah Cave concluded our little nature exploration of the much-more-to-offer Lake Kenyir, and it was time to get back to Kuala Terengganu.
E X P LO R I N G TER EN GGANU ’ S C U LT U R A L H E R I TA G E As a Muslim state, Terengganu houses the finest aspect of Islamic architecture. The inspiring Islamic Civilisation Park features the majestic Crystal Mosque. The gleaming steel and glass structure looked extraordinary through our camera lens and we just couldn’t stop the photo spree. But beside the Crystal Mosque, the park also features replicas of 22 world’s famous mosque from around the world. While the mosques are visually spectacular, our 2 last stops got us closer to the traditional Malaysian lifestyle and art. While NurZahirah Complex preserve the art of Songklet, an intricately embroidered piece of silk or cotton, Noor Arfa Craft Complex is the center of crafts such as traditional woven songket, hand-woven pandanus mat and glass craft, and especially batik. With attractions like Lake Kenyir, picturesque mosques, and traditional craft centers, Terrangganu has proven itself to be a high potential candidate for your next adventure! We bought a few souvenirs back to Ri-Yaz Heritage Marina Resort & Spa where we recharged for a return trip to Kuala Lumpur for a different Malaysia experience in the next issue.
How to get there: 1 Hour domestic flight from Kuala Lumpur Tip: The best time to visit Lake Kenyir is from late April to June when the reservoir level is high. Tip: Make sure you have bugs repellant ready before taking an adventure. nowtravelasia.com 127 July/August 2014
