NUANQUAN,

CHINA If somebody was to say to you, let’s go to a molten iron throwing festival, you may call a sick day and steer clear of the obvious dangerous connotations. But for many, this spectacular festival, taking alternative routes to that of the usual irework events traditional to the Lunar New Year festivities, is one that is not to be missed. Dressed in sheepskins and a small hat for protection, a team of skilled farmers hurl molten iron at a purpose built brick wall. The lying metal is mesmerising and when it hits the wall, the glowing red patters astound and amaze. Throughout the day there are many other events and entertainment on offer, such as traditional folk dancing. Unique to Nuanquan, a city with architecture dating back to 916 AD and an incredible cultural heritage.

SHIMO - SUWA,

JAPAN The Onbashira Festival has been held every six years for over 1,000 years, in the ancient city of Suwa in Chubu region of Japan. With the last one in 2010, this year locals once again gear up for the incredibly impressive, but also quite perilous act of riding giant logs down steep slopes. Expect hundreds of thousands of people to attend the highly revered festival, where men jump upon logs and shoot themselves down a hill; a traditional display of masculinity. The logs will eventually be placed at one of four shrines in the area, but not before the craziness has come to an end. An incredible sight to say the least.

BALI SPIRIT FESTIVAL

INDONESIA Bali Spirit Festival describes itself as the best festival in Bali that appeals to the growing holistic travel marketplace. Rather than feeling exhausted when you come home after a heavy weekend away, expect to return home feeling refreshed and built-up by an eclectic range of health experts and wellness presenters from around the world. Expect music, dancing, yoga and love. The Bali Spirit Festival is a festival that tries to connect that good energy between all who go. Expect to meet like minded people with magical intentions. This is a festival that makes you feel good emotionally, spiritually and socially.

The Adiyaman Province of Turkey is still regarded as a rural province, with poorer communities and still very much in development. But if you were to visit the province, you would soon find a wealth of beautiful pillars of yesteryear - a graveyard of beheaded gods on the top of a mountain almost forgotten. This magnificent historical site found on the eastern Taurus mountain range is known as the 8th wonder of the world - remaining host to the beheaded images of Greek and Persian gods and their resting place after the decline of the Kingdom of Commagene. It was built as a tomb and mausoleum of Antiochus I, and is described as one of the most ambitious construction of the Hellenistic period. The eagle head is well known to be one of the most intriguing and incredible carvings that have lasted the test of time. Although not worshiped these days, the gods still look over the lands of ancient times, lasting 2000 years up on the mount. This mount looms across the entire surrounding territory, some 2200 metres high, with views of a kingdom now forgotten, and a river that still runs true. The whole mount is been given UNESCO world heritage status since 1987, as it offers rich cultural heritage to the area, and is part of the impressive and unique landscapes of southeastern Turkey.

Believed to be formed partly due to the ancient activity of the volcanic mountain of Erciyes (which is now dormant) and partly due to the harsh sandy winds, eroding the soft rock to create a flowing, rippling landscape that is one of a kind. Steep pillars jut out into the sky and are often referred to as the ‘fairy chimneys of Cappadocia’ or hoodoos in the local dialects. Goreme is a national park and despite being protected now, has been used, re-built and modified by man for centuries. It is an amazing example of how nature and man once lived in much more harmony than today. Apart from some natural earthquake damage however, the landscape is very much still intact, and with the continuing erosion from the

Originally, the gods were of course not beheaded, but as times changed and beliefs, kingdoms and rulers changed, those with new ideas and control sought to destroy the current gods in place of their own. By beheading the statues, these gods were denied their reign, but were not forgotten. Many

years after, it is believed that archaeologists were the ones to re-discover the mountain of gods and place the heads upright, where they once lay strewn for hundreds of years gathering sand and slowly being eroded in the sharp sandy winds.

The name comes from the white, cotton like appearance of the mineral bath spas, laced in calcium overlooking hillsides and the ancient roman city. Despite being a small town, it has a big name within the tourist circles of Turkey. Many years ago the Romans and the Greeks discovered the strange area, and immediately set up a city and a sacred bath, believing the hot spring and sacred steam to be a gateway to the underworld and the home of Pluto (Hades in Greek belief). In addition to the manmade structures that encompassed the main hot spring, a more natural structure existed, which has now also earned UNESCO World Heritage status in the 1970s. The famous terraces are made from the lowing of high mineral content water, bubbling from hot springs deep underground. The while cotton like terraces are made of travertine, carbon based minerals that have been left by the lowing water for thousands and thousands of years. MOUNT ERCIYES,

KAYSERI When thinking of Turkey, many would not believe it when presented with the fact that it is a popular destination for winter sports - and Mount Erciyes is one of the best places for those interested. Gear up with some walking boots and a backpack and adventure upwards or, for those who enjoy a bit more speed in their step, head to the top, clip on some skis and shoot down the mount. With an elevation of almost four thousand metres, the summit is almost always covered in snow and fog. The mount is in fact not a mount at all, but a dormant volcano that looms over the city of Kayseri to the north.

Historically, Mount Erciyes was a bubbling hot lava illed volcano, and has been attributed to the ‘fairychimney’ rock formations in the nearby city of Cappadocia. Once a centre to the communities living there, the lava and volcanic dust proved incredibly fertile and was revered so much that in ancient civilisations, they even depicted the billowing volcano on their coins and in their artwork. As are many places in Turkey, Mount Erciyes is steeped in history and society, with historic writings and symbols found on the summit. Although the irst successful climb to the summit was by WJ Hamilton in 1837, it is widely regarded that locals once traversed the rocky outcrops and made it the the summit many many years before those in the early modern era. The best time to climb is from late spring to early autumn when the snows are less and the weather is calmer, but for those wanting to ski, obviously it is the winter months that are the best. However, as the mount is an exposed mountain, the snow storms can be quite hazardous, so there are constant warnings and study of the summits and mountain tops to ensure any visitor, weather you are skiing, climbing, hiking or just taking in the breathtaking views, are safe at all times. One of the more dangerous aspects of the mount is the risk of falling rocks, so most climbers, cross country skiers and adventures are advised to wear helmets. The nearest airport to the mount, and it’s neighbouring city Cappadocia, is the Kayseri International Airport,

which has busses and transport links directly to the mountain. There is also busses and other transport to the city from Istanbul. The mount is dotted with a number of ski centres, so take your pick before you go and book up to avoid disappointment. The northeast side of the mountain is recommended for those wanting to climb the mountain, as most climbs begin there. The highest lift line takes you up to 2700 metres, and stops very close to the Cobanini camping ground where those heading to the summit can rest before the last day.

LIKE ANY SNOWY MOUNTAIN, THE WEATHER CAN BE HARSH, AND THE ENVIRONMENT CAN BE DANGEROUS, BUT WHY ELSE WOULD PEOPLE VISIT IF ITS NOT FOR THE THRILLS. FOR ANYONE VISITING TURKEY WHO ENJOYS ADVENTURE OR WINTER SPORTS, MOUNT ERCIYES IS MOST CERTAINLY THE PLACE TO BE FOR A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE, WITH BREATHTAKING VIEWS OF THE GLORIOUS COUNTRY SURROUNDING IT ON ALL SIDES.

AKDAMAR ISLAND,

LAKE VAN The second largest island of four found within the Lake Van in eastern Turkey is a location well worth the visit when exploring the vast and impressive country of Turkey. Not only is it geographically spectacular, but it is also famed for it’s Armenian church, showcasing some exquisite medieval Christian art. Constructed in around 920 AD, it has survived the test of time and religious conlict, and now marks one of the more vibrant eras of Armenian construction and artistic design. Visitors lock to the island to relish in the beautiful decor, such as detailed stone relief which has been described as truly unique, which depict both biblical stories and scenes of life at the time such as palace living and hunting animals.

The island itself is also great for those who enjoy a swim, with it’s very own natural sandy shores looking out over the lake, both the water and the views are refreshing. Grab a boat from the Van Lake coast which departs every half an hour or when the boat is full. There is a small fee to visit the island, as it is a protected site, but for those carrying a Turkish Museum Card it is free.

FOR THOSE WHO ENJOY NATURE IN IT’S BEST SETTING, PITCH UP YOUR TENT IN ONE OF THE MANY CAMPING AREAS AROUND VAN LAKE, AND TAKE A STROLL ALONG THE COAST BEFORE SITTING DOWN AT ONE OF THE MANY IMPRESSIVE RESTAURANTS AND WATCH THE SUN SLOWLY SET, CASTING BEAUTIFUL ORANGE HUES ACROSS THE LAKE, MYSTIFYING THE WATER AND IT’S ISLANDS FURTHER, TAKING YOU BACK INTO A TIME ALMOST FORGOTTEN.

MAIDEN’S TOWER,

ISTANBUL

the interior architecture of Akamar church

Probably one of Istanbul’s most recognised landmarks, the Maiden’s Tower has been a place of intrigue and legend since the city began. Believed to be built in around the 12th Century, then re-constructed in around the 18th century after it was previously destroyed by the Ottoman Turks, this tiny but impressive tower rests some 150 metres off the shore of the Slack district.

It was used for many different purposes over time, such as a tax collection ofice, a lighthouse and a defence tower. In more recent times it was used to quarantine those plagued with cholera in the epidemic in the year 1830, then passed onto the Ministry of Defence before being publicly accessible, now owned by a private company today. Perhaps more compelling and exciting however, is the range of legends that surround the tower. Probably the most famous of which is where a sultan believed his daughter would be killed by a snake bike on her 18th birthday after witnessing a prophecy from god. As any father would, he tried to trick fate, and believed that if he took his daughter to the Maiden’s Tower, she would be safe from snakes and would survive. His daughter spent many days in the tower before her birthday came. At dusk on the fateful day, the sultan was so happy that she had yet to be killed by a snake and that the prophecy could in no way be fulilled, he sailed across to the tower to celebrate with his daughter. On the boat was a basket of fruit. In that basket was a snake hidden away. And just before the night of his daughters 18th birthday was over, she was bitten and then died in her father’s arms. Another prophecy told of a girl named Hero who lived in the tower and of a young man named Leandros who loved her dearly. Every night he would swim to the tower and spend the night with her, but on one fateful night, a storm rolled in and he drowned in the hard currents and swirling waters. When he washed up on the shore of the tower, the young girl name Hero was so distraught she threw herself

from the tower and landed next to her lover, killing herself to be with him. These curious legends perhaps tell of why it is known as the Maiden’s tower, as it is a place of story telling and fair maidens who seem to all end their lives while they are still fair as the day is new. These days, the legends hold true, but the use of the tower is much less impressive. No longer are there fair maidens risking their lives out on the tower, but a restaurant now takes their place, where tourists can enjoy eating with beautiful views of the bay and relive the life of some of these maidens of legends. There is even a bar at the top of the tower - but throwing yourself off with grief is not advised. Shuttle boats depart every 15 minutes from a ticket booth near the waterside that overlooks the tower. It is especially beautiful at night.

THE MAIDEN’S TOWER IS CERTAINLY ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR AND BEAUTIFUL TOURIST DESTINATIONS OF ALL OF ISTANBUL, DESPITE IT’S MORE MODERN SERVICES IT PROVIDES TODAY. FOR ANYONE TRAVELING THROUGH THE CITY, MAKE SURE TO STOP BY, JUST TO TAKE A LOOK, BOAT OVER FOR LUNCH OR A COLD BEER, OR BOOK INTO A MORE SOPHISTICATED FOUR COURSE MEAL SERVICE EVERY EVENING. REGARDLESS ON HOW YOU DO IT, JUST MAKE SURE YOU DO - IT IS NOT A PLACE TO MISS.

HOLI FESTIVAL INDI A 62 NOW TRAVEL ASIA MARCH/APRIL 2016

In more recent times, HOLI HAS CERTAINLY BECOME ONE of the more well known festivals of THE SOUTH

T

he rainbow battleields of the Holi celebrations engulf all who go outside, with people throwing brightly coloured powders at each other all day. Throngs of people take to the streets and the otherwise calm areas of India become wild with the sounds of shrieks, laughter, blessings and happiness.

These days, the dyes are more than just powders, but often come in the form of colourful liquids and water balloons, adding to the arsenal of colourful projectile blessings that you can use to cover those even far away from you. Young and old, men, women and children all come out to enjoy the wild festivities, which often roll into enormous street parties. Although celebrated country wide, there is some dispute about Holi’s true beginnings. The word Holi itself comes from the world Holika, which is the name of the evil sister of the demon king Hiranyakashipu. His own son, Prahlada, was devoted to the Lord Vishnu which angered the demon king, so he devised a plan to kill his son with the help of his evil sister. Holika convinced Prahlada to sit on ire with her but she was protected by a magical coat. However, this coat was torn off Holika and protected Prahlada, who survived. When Holika died, Lord Vishnu appeared and killed the demon king Hiranyakashipu. The symbol of a bonire was then used to represent victory of good over evil, and after the ire cooled

people applied ash to their foreheads - this ash slowly developed into the powders of Holi we see today. However, another belief suggests the colour powders come from another story. A story of the Hindi legends Radhu and Krishna, irst found in a 7th century Sanskrit manuscript. Krishna was at one point sad that his darker skin complexion was so dull compared to the lighter, more vibrant complexion of Radhu. The sadness overwhelmed Krishna and soon his mother found a way to help him overcome his feelings by applying beautiful colours to each others faces - rejuvenating their emotions and exploring new ways to express themselves. Today, the people of India still follow the traditions of applying colour to each other to say goodbye to winter and welcome the spring, the season of love and rejuvenation. Many customs come hand in hand with Holi, as do most nationwide festivals across the world. On the eve of the celebrations, wooden sticks and old pieces of wood are collected and piled together in the centre of towns and villages and set ablaze to recreate the ire which killed Holika. Ears of corn, vegetables, coconuts, butter and lowers are all thrown into the ire to appease the gods. By the morning time, the ire is smouldering and people wake up as excited as westerners are for Christmas. Soon the powder and coloured water is thrown around and people are soon engulfed in plumes of incredibly photogenic dust of greens, yellows, blues and reds. There is a phrase that many people use while celebrating Holi and that is “Never Mind, It’s Holi!” This is a phrase you will hear throughout the country if you ind yourself enjoy Holi one year,

64 NOW TRAVEL ASIA MARCH/APRIL 2016

and it basically translates to people excusing their bizarre behaviour, because its Holi day and they just want to let loose. Caste systems are ignored to a large degree and the colours serve as an equaliser between those of high status and low status, often seen playing and throwing powder together. The strange actions of throwing powder, hugging, splashing and just pure happiness can all be explained under the context of Never Mind, It’s Holi. Musical instruments are common place, and you will often see troops of bands playing drums and other traditional musical instruments through town. In more modern times, some music performances have been replaced by sound systems, but the atmosphere is still just as exciting and wild.

W

hile its is an exciting event, visitors who are not used to the celebration to take care while participating. Often the powders can have irritant affects to the skin and eyes, and in extreme cases can permanently change your skin colouration. The dyes are traditionally created from natural sources such as lowers, cumin and sandalwood, however today many are made with synthetic dyes which on occasion can be dangerous. Yet in the end, it is almost impossible to know where each person’s dye comes from, so just enjoy yourself, get stuck in, but be aware if you begin to have an allergic reaction, to quickly wash the affected area and protect yourself. Warnings are also given to women each year, following the social relations between women and men in Indian society. Women must be especially

cautious during the celebrations and the ‘letting-go’ atmosphere which can often be taken advantage of. Alcohol, colour, dust and intoxicants can encourage men to grope women or even go as far as sexual assault. Despite most revellers having no problem during the festivities, it is important to be aware of and to ensure you are in a safe situation at all times. With proper precautions, the celebration is always a happy one. For irst time revellers, wear clothes that you plan to throw away as the dye never comes out fully. For those who have light hair colours and wish to keep it from going rainbow, it is recommended you keep your hair covered. Dyes can be brought across the country and sale of the dyes often begins months in advance as people begin to stock up early. Bring you own if you have sensitive skin, so you know at least your dye is safe for you. Holi is celebrated nation wide but often the bigger parties happen in the north. Rajasthan, Goa and the cities of Delhi, Varanasi, Mathura, Manipur and Mumbai (especially Juhu Beach and Colaba) are famous for having the wildest and most populated celebrations, with tourists and locals locking from far and wide. Jaipur often hosts elephant beauty contests and other cultural events and festivities in the days leading up to the Holi day for those wanting to see some real culture before the big day. Although Holi day is oficially one day, celebrations in some parts of the country can go on for up to two weeks. Most places celebrate for at least one or two days. So regardless of where you celebrate it, Hoil is a festival that everybody should experience at least once in their lifetime. A true colour explosion, in one of the most vibrant countries in the world.

Although located in Samut Prakarn, Bang Krachao is considered “Bangkok’s Green Lung” as it is just across Chao Phraya River from Klong Toey pier. It is a striking contrast between the busy concrete jungle on one bank and laid-back verdant green jungle on the other. The smog-free, government-protected oasis is increasingly becoming the

weekend getaway for city souls and tourists seeking a small day break from their eventful Bangkok trip. Since Bang Krachao follows a strict local planning code, you would ind orchards, gardens, coconut groves, and bicycle lanes instead of high-rise buildings, factories, and highways. Your main transportation, a bicycle, is easily available as soon as you arrive at Bang Krachao pier. Explore the charming atmosphere along the elevated pathway and get a glimpse of what Bangkok looked like 50 – 100 years ago.

For more excitement, visit Bang Krachao during the weekend to experience the unpretentious Nam Pueng Floating Market. Compared to famous tourist traps like Damnoen Saduak loating market, Nam Pueng loating market is genuinely organized for locals. SAPA ‘VIETNAM’ CHARMING OF HIGH HILL, LUSH FIELD AND TREKKING

NOW TRAVEL ASIA 81 MARCH/APRIL 2016

PICTURE FOLD AFTER FOLD OF MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS, ADD LUSH GREEN RICE TERRACE CASCADING DOWN THE HILLS, NOW DRAW A SEA OF MIST ROLLING FROM THE PEAK OF THE MOUNTAINS DOWN TO THE VALLEY WITH SPARKLING STREAM FLOWING THROUGH. LOCATED IN NORTHWEST VIETNAM AMIDST ENCHANTING MOUNTAIN RANGES, SA PA IS HOME TO VIETNAM’S ETHIC MINORITIES, INCLUDING HMONG, DZAO, AND YAO. IT IS A COLOURFUL AND CHARMING MARKET TOWN, BUT IT IS KNOWN TO DISCERNING ADVENTURERS AS VIETNAM’S PREMIER TREKKING BASE AND THE OASIS OF SURREAL SCENERIES.

SA PA TOWN Nested under the shadow of Fansipan Mountain, Vietnam’s highest mountain, Sa Pa town amazingly command spectacular views of plunging valley and mountains towering above on all sides. Sa Pa was virtually non-existed on the map until the French arrived, fell in love with the town’s natural beauty, and fresh and cool climate, and developed the town as a summer resort to escape the summer heat. Sadly, French colonial villas were

82 NOW TRAVEL ASIA MARCH/APRIL 2016

damaged beyond repair during the resistant war against the French and the town went into a deep sleep. Sapa woke up to welcome the first batch of tourists in early 1990s and it quickly developed into a large town to serve the booming tourism. The town is well maintained in its own charms and the surroundings are harmoniously preserved. From the top of Ham Rong Mountains, a perfect panorama view of the town open wide with colourful local hilltribe people and lovely architectures and buildings under the shades of pine trees which centered around

the Church and market place. But you’re not here to hang out in town because once you’ve stepped out into the lush fields you’ll understand the Sa Pa’s real charm.

TREKKING HEAVEN Depending on your fitness, Sa Pa offers a wide range of trekking trip from a half day trekking to an overnight or a 3 days tour. A leisure half day tour to Cat Cat village, just 3 km south of Sa Pa, is a very popular activity, but if you really want to experience the ethnic minority group, Ta Phin village trail lies just 10 km from Sa Pa. Tourists usually catch a xe om, local motorbike taxi, to the starting point and trek through a 14 km route which passes through Black Hmong and Red Dzao villages, the 2 largest ethnic groups in Sa Pa. Try their much praised green tea and learn their rich traditions. To get the most out of the experience, hire a local guide, especially for an overnight trip. For extraordinary views, Tram Ton Pass lies 1900 meters above sea level, making it the highest mountain pass in Vietnam. Often referred to as “Heaven Gate”, Tram Ton Pass boasts picturesque landscapes and magnificent views that resemble the gate to Heaven. You’ll be surrounded by almost vertical rice terraces and stunning mountain peaks with regular mists hovering on them. Besides fantastic scenic points, the 100 meter tall Thac Bac Waterfall, or the Silver Waterfall, is also a popular en route attraction. Interestingly, Tram Ton Pass acts as the border between 2 weather fronts; on the Sapa side, it’s often cold and foggy, but drop a few hundred meters onto the Lai Chau side, and it can be sunny and warm.

TOPAS ECOLODGE Just 45 minutes out of town, up windy hilltop roads deep in the Hoang Lien National Park sits the Topas Ecolodge, with 25 stunning bungalows built to help guests escape the world and discover nature once again. Relax out on a private balcony, lined with local white marble, and enjoy the magnificent views of endless jungle valleys and rocky peaks. Great for hikers, bikers, explorers or relaxers.

WHERE TO STAY ECO PALMS HOUSE RESORT In a beautiful mountain range towards the north west of Vietnam is a vast roaming forest, with rice plantations and beautiful views across wild valleys. Eco Palms House can be found tucked away in the Black Mong Village, overlooking the beautiful views of the Muong Hoa Valley. With five private bungalows, guests are invited to reconnect with nature and escape the busy cities. Each bungalow is styled in the styles of the local minority groups such as the Hmong, Red Dzao and Xa Pho.
