Remembrance of His Majesty

King Bhumibol Adulyadej

HIS Majesty King Bhumibol Aduladyej was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA on December 5th, 1927, and was the third and youngest child of Their Royal Highness Prince and Princess Mahidol of Songkla. The name he was given, Bhumibol Adulyadej, directly translated as “Strength of the Land, Incomparable Power, has proven to be prophetic. As his reign advanced through critical times, Thai nation revolved more and more around the throne as the center of unity and strength.

Even as a young prince growing up in Switzerland, His Majesty the King was a keen craftsman.

w

ith his older brother, King Ananda Mahidol, He embarked on his first degree studies in the field of science but later switched to law and political and social sciences when he acceded to the throne. Despite his huge responsibilities as the king, His Majesty had always used his love of science and engineering for the benefit of his people. A long shot to take over the throne, he became king after the unexpected death of his older brother, King Ananda Mahidol, who had officially inherited the post in 1935. King Bhumibol was only 19 when he succeeded his brother, and his first few years were spent finishing his education abroad.

By 1951 he was back in Thailand for good and married to Queen Sirikit. During his long reign he had amassed great respect from the people and risen above unstable Thai politics. Highly revered by the public, he had a history of only intervening in politics when national stability is threatened. Otherwise he would occupied himself touring the country and working on agricultural and medical reform, while also earning a reputation as a first-class jazz musician (mostly saxophone), as well as a painter, photographer and sculptor.

NOW TRAVEL ASIA 5 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016

King Bhumibol Adulyadej No one in the history of the Kingdom of Thailand had done so much to improve the well-being of its people as His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, also known as Rama IX. He had initiated literally thousands of development projects that have greatly benefited the country and its people.

This is why almost every home, office and public building in Thailand is adorned with portraits of His Majesty and other members of the Royal Family, and this is also true in the homes of Hmong, Karen, Mon, Shan and other minorities along the Thai-Myanmar border.

The Life and Work of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej “I shall reign with righteousness for the benefits and happiness of the Siamese people.” This declaration, spoken by His Majesty at his coronation ceremony was his first public pledge to promote the welfare of all his people. Throughout his 70 - year reign he had fulfilled this promise to the letter. Early on His Majesty was inspired by the example of his parents to work tirelessly to improve the lives of the Thai people. Although most of his childhood was spent in the West, he was taught to be aware of his roots and his responsibilities to the motherland. This attitude formed a solid foundation for a deep understanding of Thai society.

6 NOW TRAVEL ASIA NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016

To His Majesty, the people’s problems were also his, and so he never stopped striving to make their lives better. It is for that reason the people proclaimed their King the “Father of the Nation” and the monarchy has become a rock solid institution, ensconced firmly in the hearts of the Thai people. His Majesty truly deserved to be called the Developer King for his dedication to alleviating the people’s hardships and improving their quality of life.

8 NOW TRAVEL ASIA NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016

Besides His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s daunting task of working for the well-being and livelihood of the people across the country he had numerous duties in forging friendly ties with various countries. In diplomatic protocol, he received foreign ambassadors to Thailand, who officially present letters of credence to him upon their accreditation to Thailand and take leave at the completion of their terms. He also granted audiences to Thai ambassadors to various countries and gave them a royal blessing before they leave to take up their posts. He also made efforts to pay state visits to friendly

countries when time permitted between 1959 and 1967. And as the royal children grew up, they share the burden in reinforcing the bonds of friendship with various countries by paying royal visits to observe technical progress and promote cooperation with them, leading to good understanding and benefits to the country and the people, which is the true objective of the Royal Ties of Friendship, a time-honored mission of the Thai monarch. the Thai monarch.

After that prolonged foreign tour, His Majesty the King did not venture abroad again, until 28 years later in 1994, when he inaugurated the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge and crossed over to visit the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. And as His Majesty advanced in age, the Crown Prince, the Princesses, and other royals are actively sharing the burden of forging royal ties of friendship with the international community.

For seven decades, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej was Thailand’s guiding light. The monarch, regarded far and wide as Father to the nation, took the country out of several deadly turns with his wise counsel. His fortitude and devotion to human development were an inspiration to all. Regardless of the differences and disparities across Thai society, His Majesty was a solitary constant, a beacon of hope for Thais rich and poor, young and old, rural farmers and urban residents alike. His Majesty King Bhumibol’s selflessness, generosity and compassion will always be remembered. To honour the monarch, Thais must learn to follow his footsteps and carry on his royal legacies.

EDITOR’S NOTE

G

one, but not forgotten this is a sad end of the year in Thailand. Thailand pays tribute to King Bhumibol on social media and pays respects to the soul of our nation for one last time. His Majesty, King Bhumibol, was a great king and a great man who contributed tremendous amount of time, effort and more than his fair share to our small country. He was more than just a king - he was a divine father figure to us all. During his 70-year reign, the King developed 4,447 projects and countless initiatives. These projects were all aimed to improve the quality of life of Thai people - his people. His words stopped bloodshed and conflict. His teachings enlightened our spirits. And his passing only leaves us with inconsolable grief.

THE GREAT KING WAS THAILAND’S LIGHT, LIFE AND GUIDING FORCE FOR 70 YEARS. AND AS HIS SOUL NOW RESTS IN PEACE, HE LEAVCH US HIS FINAL TEACHING: NOTHING LASTS FOREVER. WE PROMISE TO TRY OUR HARDEST TO HOLD DACK OUR TEARS AND MOVE ON - LIKE HE WOULD WANTED US TO. This is the year end issue. U Bein Bridge If you have to name an iconic landmark of Mandalay seen in magazines and postcards, U Bein Bridge will be right up at the top of the list. Named after the mayor who built the bridge, it is believed that the woods used to construct the bridge were reclaimed woods from an old royal palace in Inwa. Using 1,208 teak pole, U Bein Bridge stands against the test of time for almost 200 years, and with almost 2 kilometers in length, the bridge allows tourist plenty of distance to appreciate the wonderful surroundings and closely observe the everyday life of locals living on both side of Taungthaman Lake. Totaling 729 pages of Buddhist teachings, the marble plates are placed around the majestic Maha Lokamarazein Kuthodaw Pagoda which replicates the historic Shwezigon Pagoda in Bagan. Kuthodaw Pagoda was built during the reign of King Mingdon and the story says that Maha Thane Kanchong was once the abbot here, and 3 of his students went on to become kings - one of the being King Naresuan!

Mandalay Palace built by King Mindon after the relocation of the empire’s capital city from Amarapura to Mandalay, Mandalay Palace was the home of King Thibaw, the last king of Myanmar, before he was exiled to India by the British and never returned. The palace claimed to be originally built entirely by the precious teak wood which combined with unique architecture to create one of the most beautiful palaces in Asia. However, the current palace we are seeing today is the restoration of the original palace as the majestic site was vastly damaged during World War II. Although the restoration did not completely bring its former glory back, Mandalay Palace still vividly reflects the glorious days of Konbaung Dynasty. Mandalay Hill is the best spot in the city to capture the panoramic views of the entire city, especially during sunset. Mandalay Hill stands 236 meters above the ancient city, overlooking famous landmarks such as Irrawaddy River, Mandalay Palace, and Kuthodaw Temple. In addition to being the best spot to observe Mandalay, the hill is easily the most popular destination as it is located in the city center and it’s also home to abundance of pagodas and temples, including the hall where relics of Buddha found in India are kept near the foot of the hill. More rewarding experience awaits those who climb to the top as you will see the Shweyattaw or the image of standing Buddha, Sutaungpyei Pagoda, and of course, the stunning views of Mandalay. Zay cho Market Where else would you experience the local way of life if not the local market! Since Zay Cho Market is the oldest and the largest local market in Mandalay, it is the best spot to observe the lifestyle and experience local foods. Fresh produces and myriad of foods are the main highlight here, and they aren’t just fresh, they are cheap as well! Take your time exploring through exotic vegetables and fruits, and learn the local way of life.

CITIE'S UPDATE

Korea

A Heart Melting Trip Have you ever daydreamed about your first snowfall? Catching snowflakes, building a snowman, having a snow fight with friends and love ones perhaps?

Korea is geographically situated in a temperate climate zone at medium latitude. As a result, it has four distinct seasons. Spring typically starts from March to May then comes the steamy summer from June to August. Cooling fresh autumn breeze flows from September to November, and the freezing, yet fun winter lasts from December through to February. Spring and autumn enjoy beautiful clear and dry weather while the summer tends to be steamy hot and humid.

As for winter, cool and dry weather invites visitors across the world travel to Korea to experience its romantic snowfalls and enjoy winter sports, as well as “Gimjang” or the winter kimchi making tradition.

T

he temperature during winter ranges between -6 oC to 3 oC so it can be very freezing for visitors from tropical countries. Despite the cold, there are plenty of activities to warm you up from skiing and snowboarding on snow-capped mountains, basking in hot springs, outdoor ice-skating in the middle of the city, and going on a romantic Christmas date in Seoul.

S

eoul, the city of over 10 million people, isn’t just the heart of Korea’s culture, economics, and politics, but this vibrant city is also the destination that should be high on your list of places to explore once in a lifetime. The city is home to the country’s finest historical museums, botanical gardens, nature reserves, and ancient palaces dated back to the 14th century, but Seoul is also one of the most advanced cities in the world with high-tech modern buildings and COEX Mall, Asia’s largest underground shopping center. It’s impossible to explore everything Seoul has to offer in one visit.

so you might have to extend your vacation by at least a month to experience amazing sites and attractions of this stunning South Korean capital.

Must Know! Gimjang is the tradition of preparing large quantities of kimchi to eat throughout winter. It is a special event in Korean households that starts around late autumn and early winter. Kimchi made during this time is called gimjang kimchi.

5 Must Eat Street Foods When You Visit Seoul

Hongdae Street Food

1

Korean food is unique and it’s a big part of Korean culture. The best way to really experience a culture is through food, especially street food that the locals enjoy every day. No matter where you go in Seoul, you will never be far from delicious street treats, and if you have to choose a street to enjoy variety of street food, Hongdae would be up on top of anyone’s list!

2

3

1. Tteokbokki Street food won’t be completed without Tteokbokki. This soft rice cake with fish cake and sweet chili sauce is probably the number 1 Korean street food, and it’s loved by Koreans and anyone who have tried it! 2. Gimbab is basically the Korean version of maki roll. Rice is infused with perilla oil and stuffed anything from sushi, meat, tofu, to spinach, pickled radish, and egg roll before it is wrapped in seaweed. Gimbap is easy, nutritious, and delicious! 3. Odeng (Fish-cake skewers) Odeng are fishcakes and fishballs in hot soup and the perfect way to give your palates a break from the circus of tastes of street food. The mild flavour of hot and soft fishcakes goes superbly with seafood and spring onion-infused broth.

4. Gyeranppang (Egg Muffin) Gyeranppang, aka “egg bread”, is the definition of comfort food. The dense, yet soft golden muffin is baked with a whole egg and sprinkled with a little parsley. It’s hard not to like this sweet and savoury street treat! 5. Pajeon (Korean Pancake) Pajeon may be considered a snack, but it’s a very fulfilling one! These savoury pancakes may come as a plain leeks and spring onion version or a full-on seafood version with lots of squid, prawns, or mussels. Dip a slice of hot pajeon in the dipping soy sauce and you will be asking for more!

Tips 4

106 NOW TRAVEL ASIA NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016

The design of Sing Sing may remind you of Maggie Choo’s since both venues are the work of the same designer and art director, and, in particular, the work of Ashley Sutton who has been striking the town with his elaborate design and established Sing Sing as one of the hottest clubs in Bangkok. The club itself is split into two downstairs bars, a central dance floor which doubles as a stage for performances, and a balcony hanging over the dance floor, a prime spot for checking out the action down below. The music at Sing Sing Theater covers a lot of ground, and is far more ambitious than most clubs in the capital. Here you will find critically acclaimed international acts such as Gilles Peterson, French deep house artist Kilngande and, holding a weekly residency, Jul&Co, house DJs who play live percussion and beatbox, combining live performance with electronic dance music. A more down-tempo live act is usually playing between 20:00 to 22:00 which is perfect for the after dinner crowd. Dance performances are also common, featuring anything from burlesque routines to freaky girls in gas masks.

Three Sixty Lounge

Situated in Khlong San district of Bangkok in Millennium Hilton Bangkok Hotel on Charoen Nakhon Road, Three Sixty Lounge offers some of the best dining experience in Bangkok with 360 degree vistas of the city, exquisite food and cocktail, and mood setting jazz music playing softly in the background.

The bar consists of two distinct areas: One is a large rectangular open air space covering the entire middle part of this tall riverside building, and the other part, as the name suggests, is an amazing 360 degrees cupola balanced on the edge of the Millennium Hilton tower. The atmosphere is laid back yet feels sophisticated. Wind down on one of the comfortable sofas on the open rooftop and contemplate the panoramic views on each side of the tower to start off a relaxing evening. It's a great feeling to relax above a frantic city while enjoying some great wines and soft music. The cupola, on the other hand, has a very different atmosphere with dark tones, dimmed lights and soft carpets, but mostly it boasts incredible view of the Chao Phraya River at the very feet of the hotel.

THE EFFECT IS ACCENTUATED BY THE ANGLE GIVEN TO THE VERY LARGE PANORAMIC WINDOWS WHICH ALLOW YOU TO LITERALLY LOOK DOWN THE BUILDING AND OBSERVE THE FASCINATING LIFE ON THE RIVER.
