Campaign for Better

Brain Health Advancing Brain Health in Palm Beach County

Join us to lead change for better brain health. As President and CEO of Palm Healthcare Foundation, I am passionate about our vision that all Palm Beach County residents have an opportunity to thrive and reach their full health potential. A lifelong interest of mine has been the role that our brains play in our overall health. The more we learn about the brain, the more we understand just how dependent our health is on this amazing, complex organ. And, while we have developed good daily habits to take care of other parts of our bodies, few of us pay attention to our brain health, let alone adopt good daily habits.

Palm Healthcare Foundation, Inc. is Palm Beach County’s community foundation for health. With the support of donors and a focus on results, the foundation builds strong community partnerships, advocates for our most vulnerable neighbors and inspires innovative solutions to lead change for better health for generations to come.

Brain health affects everyone. Almost all of us know a person or family member who has been weighed down by mental health or addiction issues. Many of us have personal struggles. A recent article in Scientific American magazine reported that more than 80 percent of us will develop a diagnosable mental illness at some point in our lives. Put another way, we are more likely to experience a “bout” of mental illness than any other chronic health condition. In Palm Beach County, brain disorders — including substance use disorder — are claiming thousands of lives each year. Lack of resources and support for mental health conditions has claimed the top spot of Palm Beach County’s greatest unmet health needs for several years in a row. Now is the time to put a spotlight on this important health issue. The foundation is launching a $1 million fundraising campaign with a goal to advance brain health in Palm Beach County through exciting new programs and research. From building brain fitness to saving lives, Palm Healthcare Foundation is committed to leading change for better brain health. We cannot do this alone. We need your help. Please donate to our Better Brain Health Campaign to advance brain health in Palm Beach County.

— Patrick J. McNamara, LCSW President and CEO

According to the National Institute on Mental Health 1 in 4 people have a mental health disorder. In Palm Beach County, that translates to approximately 330,000 people. Even more alarming, a recent article in Scientific American estimates that 80% of us will develop a diagnosable mental illness at some point in our lives.

In Palm Beach County

600

opioid overdose deaths in 2017

27%

4,012

of high school students reported sadness and hopelessness that was strong enough to interrupt normal, day-to-day activities

calls to 211 due to loneliness and isolation

25%

increase in suicides since 2008

Our brains communicate with our bodies in very sophisticated ways. Scientists have identified five holistic domains of the brain that affect our overall health. When we incorporate healthy behaviors related to each domain, our overall health and wellness improves.

As understanding of the critical interplay between our brain and other systems in our body increases, it will change our approach to brain health and provide valuable insight into better treatment and prevention of many mental health disorders.

Donate to Our Campaign for Better Brain Health The time is NOW for Palm Beach County to focus attention on this important health issue. That’s why Palm Healthcare Foundation is launching a $1 million fundraising campaign with a goal to advance brain health through exciting new programs and innovations.

Your philanthropic support will: ● Raise awareness and increase screenings ● Change the conversation around mental illness to reduce the stigma ● Educate our community about brain health advancements ● Spearhead innovations around the opioid crisis ● Advance research and explore new technologies ● Train residents how to identify someone in mental health crisis and offer appropriate response and support
