Keynote Speaker Ava L. Parker, J.D. President, Palm Beach State College Palm Beach State College President Ava L. Parker leads Palm Beach County's largest higher education institution with a strategic approach emphasizing innovation, student success, and business and community collaboration. Parker is the first female president in the history of the institution, which opened in 1933 as Florida's first public community college. Under Parker's leadership, the College has opened a fifth campus, improved student success rates and increased support for the College from both public and private sources. PBSC also has set enrollment records, with the highest fall enrollment in the College's history achieved in fall 2016. An esteemed educational leader at the local, state and national levels, Parker serves on the Advisory Committee of Presidents of the Association of Community College Trustees. She also is the support council's liaison for the Association of Florida Colleges’ Council of Presidents. Before joining Palm Beach State, Parker was executive vice president and chief operating officer at Florida Polytechnic University. She served for more than a decade on the Florida Board of Governors of the State University System, including serving as board chair; she also served on the University of Central Florida's Board of Trustees and was general counsel at Edward Waters College. Parker's leadership extends beyond the educational realm. She is on the board of directors of Orchid Island Capital, a publicly-traded specialty finance company. She is a member of the Women's International Leadership Forum and a member of Leadership Florida Class XXI. She also served as president of the Virgil Hawkins Florida Chapter of the National Bar Association. The South Florida Business Journal has named her to its 2017 Power Leaders List, and she was profiled recently in the Florida Leadership publication. She also was recently selected by Legacy magazine as one of South Florida's Most Powerful and Influential Black Leaders and Educator of the Year. Active in community organizations, Parker is on the board of directors of the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County, the Economic Council, the Central Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce, where she also serves on the Strategic Planning Committee. She is a member of the West Palm Beach Chapter of the Links, and she was honored as a female leader by the Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church. Earlier in her professional career, Parker was a partner in the Jacksonville law firm of Lawrence & Parker, general counsel or the 11th Episcopal District of the AME Church, assistant general counsel for the state Department of Transportation, and assistant public defender in Miami-Dade County.

APRIL COMMUNITY EVENTS & LECTURES FREE Community Chair Yoga Class

Class taught by Sara Chambers, RN, BSN, CYT Please choose one class option: Wednesday, April 4 or April 18 @ 6-7pm Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center // Classroom 4 Palm Beach Medical Center now offers a chair yoga class for the community. The class will be taught by the assistant nurse manager of cardiac rehab, Sara Chambers, who is also a certified yoga instructor. Using the same techniques as traditional yoga, the class is modified to allow for gentle stretching, designed to help participants strengthen their muscles and work on their balance. Reservations are required.

You Had Open Heart Surgery, so Now What? – Mended Hearts Program Lecture by Nishant Patel, MD –Cardiothoracic Surgeon on the medical staff at PBGMC Tuesday, April 10 @ 6-7pm Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center // Classroom 4 PBGMC is teaming up with The Mended Hearts Program to provide support for heart disease patients and their families. Members will be able to interact with others through local chapter meetings, volunteer opportunities and special events. Members are encouraged to listen, share their experiences with other heart patients, and learn from healthcare professionals about treatment and recovery. A small fee* will be collected by the Mended Hearts Program for registration. This month, join Dr. Patel for a lecture on what to expect after open heart surgery. Light dinner and refreshments will be served. Reservations are required. *$5/year will be collected solely by the local Mended Hearts Program to provide educational materials for members. $20/year will be collected solely by the Mended Hearts Program if you would like to become a national member.

Better Breathers Clubs are welcoming support groups for individuals with COPD, pulmonary fibrosis and lung cancer, and their caregivers. Learn better ways to cope with lung disease while getting the support of others in similar situations. This month, join Karen Hartung, dietitian, for a lecture on nutrition for COPD. Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center // Classroom 3 PBGMC is teaming up with the Area Health Education Center to provide education on the health effects of tobacco use, benefits of quitting and what to expect. A Tobacco Cessation Specialist will help participants identify triggers and withdrawal symptoms and brainstorms ways to cope. The class is delivered over six, one-hour sessions.

Easter Brunch Is Hopping at PGA Commons This Easter, hop along to PGA Commons to enjoy a special brunch and a visit with the Easter Bunny. The buffet-style brunch at Spoto’s Oyster Bar will be swimming with choices. Fresh seafood offerings include chilled mussels diablo and Asian honey salmon. Breakfast lovers will swoon for hollandaise-drizzled eggs Benedict, cinnamon French toast, and made-to-order omelets. A carved pit ham with pineapple glaze graces the carving station, along with a juicy roast beef. Raw clams and oysters will also be available for purchase. Spoto’s Easter brunch buffet is $39.95 per person, excluding beverage, tax, and tip. Children age 12 and younger can dine for $14.95.
