2018 Teacher of the Year Award Winners Beacon Cove Intermediate School Patti Nelson Patti Nelson has been an elementary teacher for 31 years in the Western and Northern areas of Palm Beach County. She st has served as a lead mentor teacher to 1 year and college intern teachers for 20 years. Patti has been nominated by her peers for the Dwyer Award as well as Macy Teach of the Year. For the past 5 years, Patti has been recognized by the state as a Highly Effective Teacher. Patti says, “I love teaching math and strive to help my students learn to love math.” Dwight D. Eisenhower Elementary School Bernadette Moran Bernadette Moran is an innovative, knowledgeable, teacher who focuses on building connections with her students. She shares her knowledge through mentorship of new teachers and interns. Her classroom has been videotaped as the model for multiple literacy and conscious discipline strategies. Ms. Moran is a remarkable teacher who has built a classroom community that integrates social-emotional learning that promotes an optimal learning environment. Howell L. Watkins Middle School Nathaly Ibarra Ms. Ibarra is an irreplaceable teacher. She spends countless hours outside the classroom just to make sure each day is a success. Her tireless effort and commitment to the students is refreshing. Ms. Ibarra goes "above and beyond" in every part of her day and she really is a "Next Level" teacher. In just a few years at the school, she quickly has risen to an elite club of outstanding educators. She _ is well deserving of this awards and recognition. Independence Middle School Allison Fredericks It is with great pleasure that I recommend Allison Fredericks for the Teacher of the Year Award. Allison is a dynamic educator who is passionate about teaching and learning. She sees excellence as a minimum and settles for nothing less th than her best. As a teacher of 7 grade regular mathematics in an inclusive ESOL and/or ESE environment, Allison carefully nurtures her students’ confidence levels and willingness to engage in learning, then fosters their desire to achieve at their fullest potential. Mrs. Fredericks was carefully selected to work with this population of students because of her caring nature and willingness to connect with all students. Her integrity and professionalism are equally notable. Jerry Thomas Elementary School Cyndee Kelly In her years as a teacher, Mrs. Kelly has had an impact on countless young lives. She reaches deep down into the hearts of her students because it is there that she begins her work. She enters students’ lives as a teacher and continues as their mentor, encouraging each to succeed. Jupiter Farms Elementary School Donna VanWeele Mrs. VanWeele is an expert teacher with a heart for her students and out community. She goes above and beyond each st day and plays a vital role here at JFCES. She heads up our volunteer committee and effectively leads the 1 grade team. Mrs. VanWeele is truly an asset!
Jupiter Community High School Nora Ugalde Nora Ugalde has been a stellar Chemistry teacher for the School District of Palm Beach for 36 years. She has been a Warrior since 1997 and taught at Palm Beach Lakes and Twin Lakes for the years before 1997. Even though Nora has taught a few other science classes over the years, she has predominantly taught Chemistry 1 Honors along with AP Chemistry. Her passion, dedication, and love for Chemistry, her students, and education are second to none. She defines “Teacher”. One of the most remarkable components that make up Nora Ugalde is her endless effort to work with her students who seek the help before and after school. In addition, her Sunday study sessions for her AP students. Over the years her near 100 percent pass rate of her students AP exam results demonstrates how effective and extraordinary she truly is. AP chemistry is one of the most rigorous high school courses one can take. Nora has touched the lives of so many of her students to the fact that they reconnect with her over the years and are forever thankful and appreciative, attributing much of their success due to her endless effort and passion for teaching. Lighthouse Elementary School Donna Purtell nd Mrs. Donna Purtell is completing her 32 year of teaching and demonstrates the excitement for her profession as if she were a new teacher. She has been instrumental with implementing our ESOL program and support ELL students with becoming proficient readers and writers. Every year Mrs. Purtell has helped her students write, edit, and publish books about their life experiences. She then has an amazing family night where each student reads one of the important events from their life to all parents (there is never a dry eye in the room). Mrs. Purtell mentors other teachers and demonstrates an intense caring attitude towards her students that results in huge academic gains. She has made a big difference with our ELL population and has been an excellent role model for all teachers. Limestone Creek Elementary School Jennifer Hutson Mrs. Hutson is the fourth grade department chair and ESE inclusion teacher. She takes on many leadership roles at the school and is a huge support for our new teachers. She uses technology and super cool programs that motivate and support her students. She is respected by all and we love her! Northboro Elementary School Karen Markwith Mrs. Markwith is an Exceptional Student Education (ESE) inclusion teacher servicing students in grades 4 and 5. She provides quality educational experiences in a nurturing and caring learning environment and holds high expectations for her students. Mrs. Markwith’s desire is to make a difference in the lives of children, and she does indeed. Northmore Elementary School Audrey Lang Ms. Lang started her teaching career 22 years ago, after she received a B.A. Degree in Elementary Education. Later she earned a M.S. Degree in Exceptional Education and become Nationally Board Certified in Reading. Audrey has taught Second, Third, ESE, and SAI, before transferring to Northmore to serve as the Reading Coach. Audrey believes every child is special and deserves the same love and respect as those who are more fortunate. Palm Beach Gardens Community High School Melissa Llorens In SY17, PBGHS had a graduation rate of 93.4% - the first time over 90% in the history of the school. While it is most certainly a whole school team effort – a team of students, parents, teachers and administration – Ms. Llorens was an integral part of the team. Ms. Llorens has been a Reading teacher at PBGHS for 13 years. As our Senior READING RETAKE teacher, Ms. Llorens works tirelessly preparing our Seniors, Juniors and ELL students for the SAT, ACT, and FSA RETAKE. Earning the required READING score for graduation is the biggest barrier keeping our students from earning a high school diploma – especially our minority and ELL students. Ms. Llorens’ caring and encouraging nature towards her students gives them the confidence to never give up and to persist in earning the passing score. Every year Ms. Llorens helps over 90 students across the high school diploma finish line with a reading passing score.
Riviera Beach Prepatory & Achievement Academy Toshimi Abe Toshimi Abe Janiga, outstanding educator for FAU Center for Holocaust & Human Rights Center. She is a Language Arts Teacher at Riviera Beach Prep., a public alternative school. She is the only alternative education teacher to be a Dwyer Awards Teacher of the Year Finalist. Seminole Trails Elementary School Rebecca Bowman Rebecca Bowman is an irreplaceable member of the faculty at Seminole Trails Elementary School. She began her teaching career as an intern at STES and has development into the leader of the kindergarten team and a valuable member of the School-Wide Positive Behavior Support Committee. Suncoast Community High School Mary Rawson Mary Rawson is completing her fifth year at Suncoast High School. She has been a leader in her Department. Currently, Ms. Rawson has taken the lead implementing AICE General Paper. She has coached her team through the curriculum, while mentoring a new teacher. This year she took on the role of Junior Class Sponsor, and created a beautiful “Gatsby” themed Prom. She also sponsors Dance Marathon, which raised more than $30,000.00 for The Children’s Miracle Network. The Benjamin School Steven Anderson It is a pleasure to nominate Mr. Steven Anderson, Upper School history teacher, coach, and advisor, for this year’s Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year award. His clear love for history and for his students is reflected daily in his efforts here at school, while his annual Florida and Caribbean History class trips to the Grenadines have made lifelong impacts on our students, primarily as a result of the personal ties he has forged in these island communities over the years. Our students not only live history on these trips, but become part of the fabric of the community for ten days as a result of Steve’s ongoing work to share supplies and educational resources with the residents of the Grenadines. His generosity of spirit and his ability to inspire his students to imagine and live beyond their immediate limits make Steve Anderson our choice for 2018 Teacher of the Year. The Conservatory School Natricia Finegan Mrs. Finegan has been the ‘kid-whisperer’ on our campus. She has a magical way of spinning her instruction to capture event most die-hard student straggler. She teaches with a laser-focus, knows her students and their academic needs, leading her classroom with a soft voice and a commanding presence. It is an absolute joy to watch her teach. It’s like observing a beautiful tapestry being woven with sharp colorful details, clear lines of meaning, and a long lasting design. For the past eight years I have watched this master teacher nurture and grow some of the most challenging students as they complete their last year in elementary school. She has been recognized by the Florida Department of Education as a High Impact teacher for the past two years, having accomplished this while helping students feel confident, cared for, and exercising a new-found love of books. We are thrilled to recognize her as our Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year. The Greene School Samantha Smith Samantha Smith is the dream educator. She is a supportive colleague and team member who is genuinely a teacher leader. There is no job too big or too small and she is always lending a helping hand to her fellow teachers. Samantha was nominated by her peers because she has positive energy and her smile is contagious. To be nominated by your colleagues is the highest form of flattery. Thank you Samantha – we are proud of you! The Pine School Jennifer Metzger The Pine School proudly recognizes Jennifer Metzger. Jennifer, a Middle School teacher and advisor, skillfully and enthusiastically teaches both Pre-Algebra and Algebra, and coaches Pine’s MathCounts Team. She is a sensation at technology integration and inspires her students to continually deepen their mathematical understanding. As a teacher leader, Jennifer is an invaluable member of our community.
Timber Trace Elementary School Shannon Culp Mrs. Culp truly runs the hub of our school at Timber Trace Elementary. It came as no surprise to our school that we have one of the largest circulation counts in the entire District. While most media centers are open from August to June, our media center is open year round! Mrs. Culp coordinates a Summer Reading program. There is always some type of event going on with Mrs. Culp. Battle of the Books, author visits, themed book fairs…you name it, the media center has got it! Watson B. Duncan Middle School Nicole Childs As Pre-Academy of Finance lead teacher and adviser of the largest Middle Level chapter of Future Business Leaders of America, Mrs. Childs’ outstanding dedication provides her students with unparalleled educational and real-world experiences. Mrs. Childs is adept at building relationships, ensuring that each student knows they have someone who cares. West Riviera Elementary School Crystal Watson Ms. Crystal Watson is an extremely competent and compassionate teacher that serves students, teachers and families in the West Riviera Elementary School community in a professional and caring manner. She is a consistent team-player, who takes immense pride in her students’ academic progress and her overall work performance. William T. Dwyer High School Ronda Gagnon Mrs. Gagnon’s teaching career spans 24 years and her dedication and commitment to students and the community has been unwavering. In addition to teaching Personal Fitness, she is a Class Sponsor, has been an SGA Advisor for over 11 years and has been nominated as a 2018 Dwyer Award Nominee.
