[ Air duct cleaning ]

What you don’t see Air duct cleaning has many benefits The air ducts in your home provide more than just a route for warm and cool air to travel. There is an unseen world behind those vent covers. And it’s not pretty. “We get everything out of the vent that you can imagine, says John Musser, owner of Musser’s Cleaning and Restoration Service. “We find bats, rats and mice. Of course, the creepy-crawlies aren’t the only things that might inhabit the duct work. There are pollutants such as dust, animal dander and, with newer homes, construction debris. Those contaminants can affect the air quality inside your home and make life miserable for allergy sufferers. And all of that makes for a good reason to have your air ducts cleaned by Musser’s Cleaning and Restoration Service, which has been in business since 1967. Musser says that air duct cleaning has been offered for several years and when industry guidelines and recommendations are followed, household dust, dander, allergy irritants, construction debris and yes, the creepy-crawlies, are removed.

“We use a ‘source removal’ process which combines compressed air, agitation and negative pressure (vacuum), Musser says. “All of the contaminants are collected in our truck-mounted unit outside of the home or business. That means you don’t have to see what comes out of your air ducts. And, the vacuum Musser refers to isn’t your home variety. Their vacuum will lift a concrete block off the pavement. “We have a variety of customized cleaning tools for the different applications that we see every day, he adds. To improve the air quality in your home, there should be no shortcuts when it comes to air duct cleaning. Musser says that there are good companies with the best equipment available and his company is in that category. “Look at more than price, he says, “... and remember, the entire system has to be cleaned. If someone offers to clean just part of your system for less money, move to your next quote, Musser says. How often you should have your air ducts cleaned will depend on how

airtight your home is. And, while the cost will vary from project to project, Musser says that price usually ranges from $260 to $400. Once the duct work has been professionally cleaned, changing air filters regularly can help maintain the air ducts. Yes, you know that changing the furnace and air conditioner filters help make the systems more effective. The same applies to the duct work. “Your heating and cooling system is trading that air constantly keeping us comfortable, so it only makes sense to have the cleanest air possible moving through your home or office, Musser says. “Changing your air filters regularly will dramatically enhance and extend the benefits of having your air ducts cleaned. In addition to air duct cleaning, Musser’s Cleaning and Restoration Service also does carpet and upholstery cleaning, water damage and fire damage restoration and media blasting. The company serves both residential and commercial customers.

[ Awnings ]

Going green Awnings help reduce energy use in both residences and businesses With the seasons changing and temperatures dropping, now is the perfect time to invest in awnings for your home or business. Awnings can help reduce energy consumption by at least 25 percent, making this addition an easy way to save money. Gary Reynolds of Awnings Unlimited believes awnings are the most energy-efficient purchase you can make. “Awnings are the best way to save energy in your home or business,” Reynolds says. “They eventually pay for themselves because they help reduce internal temperatures by up to 15 degrees. They also help control your thermostat, which is key to reducing your heating and cooling costs.” Not only are awnings an eco-friend-

ly investment, but they can also act as a signage for a business. They can help shield your home or business from any type of weather, as well as keep your furniture and drapes from being damaged by the sun. “Awnings protect your home or business from all types of weather. They are an all-around good investment,” Reynolds says. “And, they have an eight- to 10-year warranty, so they will last for many years. They also let in natural light, while keeping the sun from damaging your interior.” By purchasing awnings for your business or residence, you will not only reduce the amount of energy you use, but you also will invest in an addition that is guaranteed to help save you money.

[ Carpet cleaning ]

A deeper clean Let the pros tackle your carpets You love your carpet — it’s soft under your bare feet. But while you’re sinking your toes in that plush cushion, have you ever thought about what’s buried deep in your carpet’s fibers? “Carpet in the home has been compared to the kitchen sink — everything ends up there after the party,” says John Musser, owner of Musser’s Cleaning and Restoration Service. “It doesn’t take long to see visually the abuse it takes, but it also acts as a filter holding on to everything that lands on it.” And what dwells in your carpet — dirt, dust mites, pet dander, bacteria, etc. — can trigger allergies. It kind of makes you want to put your shoes back on, doesn’t it? Just as the kitchen sink needs a good cleaning, so does the carpet in your home. If you have allergies, it makes sense that cleaning the carpet — and keeping it clean — will benefit your health. You can rent a carpet-cleaning

machine, purchase the shampoo and do it yourself. Or for a comparable cost, you call in the pros and know that your carpet is going to get really clean. “When you have to do it yourself, it’s a big hassle,” says Kathy Hudspeth, co-owner of Hudspeth’s Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning. “We can come and do it in a couple of hours.” Musser’s Cleaning and Restoration Service and Hudspeth’s Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning are two companies ready to tackle the job. Musser’s has been in business since 1967 and Hudspeth’s since 1998. Both companies use a powerful truck-mounted hot-water cleaning system. The water is heated to about 230 degrees — hot enough to not only extract dirt but also to kill bacteria. “It’s the way carpet manufacturers recommend,” Hudspeth says. “When we put the hot water on, we take the water back off.” Musser adds that the drying time is

minimal and the water temperature is high enough to get the most out of the cleaning products used. Hudspeth’s charges by the square foot and Musser’s by the room for carpet cleaning. Both companies offer stain removal, pet urine/odor treatment and carpet protectors. “We have carpet protectors that far surpass the products available to us in the past,” Musser says. How often you have your carpet cleaned depends on the amount of traffic, the pros say. Most carpet should be professionally cleaned at least once a year. For homes with higher-traffic areas, kids and pets, about every six months. “People who have pets usually get their carpet cleaned more than people who don’t,” Hudspeth says. But no matter how often you have your carpet professionally cleaned, both Hudspeth and Musser stress that regular vacuuming is the one thing that you can do to make sure your carpets stay as clean as possible. “What wears down carpet the most is dirt,” Hudspeth says. She recommends vacuuming at least once a week. “Vacuuming is the most overlooked and best thing you can do,” she says. Also, use a neutral spotter for your “accidents,” Musser says.

[ Flooring ]

Step on it Find the right flooring for your home or business If it stands up to Ricko the Rhino, it will probably last in your home. Smart Strand carpet, made from corn-based fibers, was installed in the cage of a rhinoceros at the Burmingham Zoo. After two weeks, the white carpet was cleaned and came out looking like new. The Smart Strand carpet is very popular with customers at Carpet Masters. “It’s the softest, easiest to clean and it has a lifetime soil and stain warranty,” says owner Tim Westcott. “It’s the best all the way around.” Carpet Masters is celebrating its

20th anniversary this month, which gives Westcott the advantage of knowing which carpets will stand up for customers. Much of his business now is repeat business. As a mill outlet for Mohawk, Carpet Masters sells flooring that meets quality standards but is from discontinued styles. “With the outlet, you can save at least 50 percent, if not more,” Westcott says. Smart Strand is also a big seller at Eckard’s, flooring specialist Josh Nauman says, and is available at all price points. New technology offers many more

options for homeowners. Konecto is a vinyl flooring that looks like wood or tile and is easy to install. “You can put it over plywood, you could even put it over existing vinyl,” Nauman says. The flooring is waterproof, resistant to acid and grease and is easy to clean. The Konecto flooring and Smart Strand carpet are the type of product that appeals to customers, he says. “They want something that is lower maintenance and has longevity,” Nauman says. “You can buy it once and not have to worry about it for 20 years.” A brand new product at Eckard’s is high-definition porcelain. “It looks really sharp. It looks exactly like natural stone,” Nauman says. The porcelain works great in high-traffic areas because it is longlasting. An additive can be mixed in the grout so that it does not absorb, which means the grout would not have to be sealed ever again.

A guide to garage doors Make your home more secure and energy efficient Garages can be used as a workplace or hobby room, to store vehicles or even for your kid’s band practice. Whatever you use your garage for, now is the perfect time to make sure it’s up-to-date, safe, smart and sleek. Does this sound like your garage? If not, you’ll want to read this quick garage guide. to increase your value? With a state-of-the-art garage, you’ll soon be the envy of the neighborhood. So ask yourself, is a new garage right up your alley? With a variety of styles, you can find a new garage door that fits your home and adds to your curb appeal in an instant. “The garage doors set the tone of the house,” Charlie Potchad, a real

estate agent licensed in Kansas and Missouri, says. “The garage doors are like the eyes of the house, so when we drive up with clients you get an instant feel for what the house is like from the garage.” Whether you prefer steel, wood or aluminum, there are garage doors to fit every architectural style. Your garage can make a statement, blend in or look just right. But, being one of the focal points of your house, you better make sure it’s a good one.

Your garage is the largest entry point to your house, so make it a safe one. Make sure your garage meets the highest industry standards of safety by using a company you can trust. Overhead Door of St. Joseph puts every garage door through rigorous safety testing. “A garage door can’t be made burglar proof, but our systems come with advanced, tamper-resistant security features and heavy-duty construction to prevent outside dangers from threatening your livelihood, Houp says. Also, you want to remain safe in your own garage, so it’s important to test the safety reverse feature. The feature is put in place to prevent harm to people, pets or any other object in the way. To test this feature out on your garage, place a 2x4 across the garage door’s threshold. It should stop and reverse before closing.

Maintenance Just like you schedule oil changes for the vehicles in your garage, it’s not a bad idea to schedule maintenance tune ups twice a year. This will keep everything running smoothly and eliminate any hangups with the chains, coils, tracks or doors. Weather changes can cause the doors to expand or shrink too, so you should schedule a tune-up now and as spring approaches. This way, the door to your home, the heart of your family, is always safe, sound and in style.

Before you head out on a family vacation or to a holiday destination, make sure you unplug the garage door opener unit.

O There is a technology for garage door openers that has a rolling code, which changes the access codes. Each time you use the transmitter, the codes are changed, helping to prevent code grabbing by thieves. O Consider installing an activation pad with a personal identification number so kids can get in the garage without having a remote control device. Only make sure the pin number is something that your average thief can’t easily figure out, like birthdays, last names, pet names, etc. O When valet parking your car or leaving it at a repair shop, never leave the remote control in the car. This is like giving them a key to your house. O If you have a GPS system, don’t program in “home to your system. If your car is stolen, the thief would have a direct map to your home, and most likely, your garage door opener, too. This is like a free pass to your home. O For the utmost security, be sure to lock the door from the garage to the inside of your home. O As you lock up each night, double-check that your garage door is closed. overhead door of St. Joseph Overhead Door of St. Joseph is recognized as the leading single-source manufacturer of integrated door and operator systems for commercial, industrial and residential needs. [ Guttering, siding and windows ]

Time to cash in Energy tax credit makes home improvements more affordable Leaves have started falling — and probably landing in places where you don’t want them. Leaf guards installed over guttering can keep leaves from clogging up gutters and creating problems later on, says Doug Wallis of Wallis Guttering Co. in St. Joseph. The guards let rain water filter in, but keep out leaves as well as other debris. Constructed of high-grade aluminum, the guards are available in eight colors, so they can be coordinated to match and can be installed with existing or new guttering. All of Wallis’ gutters are rust-free systems with stainless-steel fasteners, which means they last longer and look better. The guttering is made to suit for each homeowner. Customized end caps and corners create a finished look that adds to a home’s value. Wallis also provides custom window wraps. The aluminum wraps are added to existing windows and doors to give them an energy-efficient, maintenance-free finish.

Information at www.wallisgutter ing.com shows pictures of the nearly 5,000 customers the business has served in 12 years in business. For homeowners considering improvements, the next few months may be the best time to get the work done. A federal tax credit through the end of 2010 allows homeowners to claim 30 percent of the cost, up to $1,500, for a number of projects including new windows, doors, roofs and heating and cooling systems. “I encourage everyone to utilize the energy tax credit,” says Don Peters, owner of Peters Home Repair. “I can also help you get additional money back through the electric and gas companies.” The credit makes home improvements affordable for many people, Peters says. His business offers free consultations and no-hassle estimates and works with homeowners to take on projects at a pace that is affordable. It’s a good time to at least look into

improvements, such as energy-efficient doors and windows, Peters says. “You could have a return on energy savings in five to seven years. With the energy prices rising, you’ll get a return on your investment quicker,” he says.

Stay safe Take care to avoid a fire accident in your home this winter As the weather dries up and everyone scrambles to stay warm, it’s important to avoid fire accidents in your home. A great place to start when fireproofing your house is with your heating appliances. If you live in an older home with a floor heater, make sure there is nothing blocking it. American Family Insurance recommends that you leave at least a three-foot space open around your heating units. And, if you’re cutting costs and using space heaters, make sure they are turned off before leaving your home and before going to bed. Invest in a thick, robust comforter or two instead of using space heaters at night. And, make sure your furry friends are warm, too, by buying a sheepskin bed for them to sleep on and even give them an old blanket or sweatshirt to cuddle up in. Although space heaters outside can give you a warm ambiance for any outdoor gathering, it’s best if all kerosene is left outside. Don’t use any heaters that burn on fuel like kerosene because this is a prime source of ignition, and it generates life-threatening carbon monoxide — both things that you don’t want in your home. While you’re at it, a good thing to grab the next time you’re at the store is a carbon monoxide detector. These will alert you to any high concentrations of this deadly gas and help to keep your family safe. Some fireproofing tips might be things you’ve heard before, but it’s important to repeat them — especially to your children. For instance, everyone knows to not store any flam14 Home Resource Guide Fall 2010

mable liquids inside your home, but do you know exactly which things can combust? If you bring your motorcycle in for the winter, take it for one last ride so that gasoline is not in the tank. And, the same goes for your lawn mower and gasoline tank. The vapors from these types of liquids can easily ignite from stoves or water

heaters. Always store combustible materials away from furnaces and portable space heaters. This holiday season, make sure your family is singing “O Christmas Tree” instead of “Oh no!” If you choose to decorate with a real tree, make sure you keep it well-watered. If your tree dries out, it can ignite

[ Insurance ] easily from hot holiday lights. And, worst of all, if it’s especially dry it will burn very quickly and spread throughout your entire house in an instant. So, keep that tree watered. Not only will it reduce your risk of fire, but it will keep that spruce smelling of a sweet winter morning all season long. While the holidays are centered around the table and full of love and laughter, the actual decorations may be a bit of a pain, but once they’re up, you’re able to spread cheer and joy. When you’re detangling strand after strand of tree and house lights, ensure they are working properly and that there are no shorts in the wiring. This will reduce any sparks that could ignite your home or tree. Get in the habit of checking the fuses, too. If you need to replace one, make sure it’s the same size, and when in doubt, ask for help Lighting your home gives an inviting glow to your family and friends, but you don’t have to recreate the scene from the ever-popular “Christmas Vacation” movie to show your holiday spirit. Clark Griswold did not emit the best fire-safe holiday decorations, but thankfully you can. American Family Insurance suggests trying to avoid using extension cords when you can. If you must use them, make sure they are not cracked or frayed and are UL approved. Try to purchase cords that carry enough electric load for the appliance. The labels on the appliance and cord should have this information for you, and your local hardware store can help, too. Or, better yet, let a professional handle it. There are several companies that will hang your lights for you and even store them in the off-season. This way you can take comfort in knowing your holiday lights are professionally hung, and they’ll look good too.

Options abound in home remodeling — for everything including the kitchen sink. The farmhouse sink is a popular choice now, which creates a period feel with a tub-like sink. Fall projects Prepare your yard and home for harsh winter weather As we shift from summer to fall, we realize the time for yard work is coming to an end. Although the season is nearly over, there is still much to do in order to prepare for colder weather and to get a jump start in making sure your yard is the yard you want next spring. Some projects to tackle before winter hits include cleaning up leaves, aerating, overseeding and fertilizing. Trim low-hanging tree limbs to allow sunlight and seed to fill in bare spots. Clean out the gutters and trim the bushes. And make sure that you have a snow removal provider set up prior to the first snow. “The biggest mistake that I run into is that people wait way too long before they call a professional, says Chris Kowalewycz, owner of Dr. Green Thumb Landscape Services LLC. “It is much less expensive to prevent issues than fix them. One call can take care of all your outdoor needs. One call does it all with honesty and integrity. While lawn mowing is the most popular service the company offers, Dr. Green Thumb also does lawn seeding, commercial and residential general maintenance, tree service, shrub trimming, landscape design, fence/rock wall construction, mulching beds fertilization, leaf mulching, roof and gutter cleaning, French drains and more. “Our company is based on the

belief that our customers’ needs are of the utmost importance, says the company’s website. “Our entire team is committed to meeting those needs. As a result, a high percentage of our business is from repeat customers and referrals, the backbone to any successful business. Quality without compromise is unique to our business in the industry. Most companies are focused on time and quantity, not quality. We believe that the customer that we are currently handling is the most important customer in our business. Each customer is handled one customer at a time. Bottom line is we really are what most businesses have forgotten — customer service. Dr. Green Thumb Landscape Services LLC has a large assortment of professional equipment, and background checks are run on all the company’s landscaping professionals.

Dr. Green Thumb Landscape Services LLC Dr. Green Thumb believes in quality without compromise. We offer free estimates and services including tree trimming, lawn installation, lawn maintenance, custom flower beds and gardens, French drains, clean up, bush trimming, gutter cleaning, aeration, custom fertilizing and weed control and dirt work. Turn to the pros Tackle any of a number of projects A few cold mornings are enough to remind us that the summer is over. Our project ideas turn from building great outdoor areas to keeping the inside warm and cozy for the coming months and protecting our homes from harsh conditions. “People usually think about insulating and weatherizing their home for the coming season,” says Don McCamy of Porters Building Center. “This year is especially good, with 30 percent tax rebates available on replacement windows, storm doors and insulation. Roof repair and exterior painting in preparation for bad weather are also good projects.” Porters Building Centers began 58 years ago as Kearney Lumber Company in what was an abandoned mule barn in Kearney, Mo., by Mack and Mary Helen Porter, the company’s website says. The company has since grown to seven locations and serves the Kansas City, St. Joseph and Lake of the Ozarks areas.

The company has two contractor and distribution yards in Mosby and Kansas City, each with rail spurs, and five traditional lumberyard and home centers in Kearney (headquarters), Cameron, Laurie and Greenview in Missouri, and Elwood in Kansas. The Elwood location, opened in 2004, offers next-day delivery Monday through Friday and often delivers the same day. “Porters specializes in greeting and helping each customer,” says McCamy. “If you can’t find what you need among our quality line of products, we are happy to help you special order those hard-to-find items that no one else has.” Porters Building Centers stocks many fine products other than those you would find in a hardware store. Porters is a distributor for ViWinteck, Ellison & Lindsay in vinyl windows and Andersen & Weather Shield in wood, features Porter paints and purchases lumber direct

from the mills with quality as the first consideration. “Porters has a seven-acre lumberyard with a “pay at the gate” option for speed and convenience,” McCamy says. “We are staffed with knowledgeable, helpful associates that have many years of experience in the building industry.” Stop by and see the complete product lines of millwork, lawn and garden supplies, power equipment, tools and paint.

Porters Building Center Porters has been in business for 58 years. The Elwood location is a full-line lumberyard and home center opened in 2004. We offer next-day delivery Monday through Friday and often the same day. We pride ourselves on service and experience. “We’re here to help.” 807 Roseport Road, Elwood, Kan. | (913) 365-1500

DO YOU HAVE

“Soggy soil, septic smell, slow drainage and standing water — these are all signs of a septic system that is coming to an end or becoming exhausted,” says Dick Funk, owner of Midwest Aeration Inc. Until recently, the only answer to this problem was the installation of a new leach field, which is expensive and time consuming. Since heavy equipment is used, work cannot be done until the area above the septic system is dry. Then the area has to be dug up, a new system installed and the soil replaced — an operation taking a number of days or weeks and costing thousands of dollars. Midwest Aeration can provide a solution that is fast, effective and relatively inexpensive. In a few hours, years of life can be added to your septic system, without disturbing your lawn. 20 Home Resource Guide Fall 2010

“We do not disturb the soil,” says Funk. “We need an opening of 44 inches wide to get the machine in the yard. It will look like a riding lawnmower has been in the yard. Results are immediate. The system will go down to working level while I am there, and the system can be used while I am performing this process.” “Our first priority is the satisfaction of our customers,” says the company’s website. “Our treatment comes with a standard two-year guarantee, which can be extended to five years. We can provide a better alternative. With jobs completed now numbering more than 800 and a success rate of 99 percent, we can provide references and perhaps even introduce you to a satisfied neighbor who has used our system. We guarantee you will be satisfied.” Midwest Aeration currently offers

[ Stay warm ]

Keep the cold outside Nothing beats a cozy fireplace for keeping warm on a winter evening — except a fireplace that has no fumes or ashes and can be moved to different locations. Electric fireplaces fit the bill and are a hit with customers of Eisenberg’s Better Living. The Amish-made units are heaters that can warm up a room. They are also beautifully made in different types of wood, including oak and cherry. “It looks like a real fire with embers and everything. You can leave the flames on for cosmetics even when you’re not using the heater,” says owner Richard Eisenberg. The fireplaces plug into any electrical outlet, no chimney or vent required. Because they are on rollers, they can be easily situated. The fireplaces are a nice complement to Eisenberg’s line of portable furnaces. The efficient heaters supplement a furnace, perfect for warming up a basement or taking the chill out of a fall evening when the whole furnace is not necessary. With winter on the way, homeowners also may be thinking about ways to keep warm even if the electricity goes out. Vent-free stoves that run off of LP or natural gas have generated a lot of interest since the ice storm a few years ago, says Gary Power of The Comfort Center. The stoves can be free standing or installed in an existing fire box. Because they do not require a vent, they are easy to install and completely efficient. “All the heat comes into the house. You’re not losing it up the chimney,” Power says. The stoves have an electric blower but still generate heat when the power is off. The Comfort Center also sells pellet stoves and fireplaces. And there are other ways to warm up this winter. Spas are built above ground and can be used year-round. Many spas have therapeutic benefits, Power says, with 15 to 16 jets

that can target any area of the body. Spas also can be tailored to other needs — like a built-in television or connection for an iPod. The Comfort Center has more than 20 different spas available, with about 12 on display in the store with special features like waterfalls and lighting. This month, The Comfort Center is celebrating 30 years in business, with the last two years at the location at 1804 N. Belt Highway.

The Comfort Center The Comfort Center creates an atmosphere of year-round comfort in your own home, offering pools, spas, fireplaces and portable heaters. [ Window treatments ]

A room with a view Consumers look for stylish ways to update their window treatments Fall is in full swing, and homeowners are looking for comforting ways to update the interior of their homes. One way consumers are adding a little warmth to their look is by incorporating the latest window drapes into their homes. “People are definitely looking for ways to update their windows, says Donna Harrison of Donna’s Drapery Shop. “One of the most popular styles right now is pleated drapery. It’s one of our top sellers. Since recently celebrating its 40th year in business, Donna’s Drapery Shop has seen a rise in customers looking for simple ways to update their homes. They offer an extensive selection of draperies, as well as side panels, shades and installation. Harrison has not only seen a rise in drapery sales, but she also has noticed an increased interest in shades. “People really love our light-weave roller and solar shades, Harrison says. “They come in a variety of fabrics, and they can even be customized

to suit your tastes. In addition to drapery and shades, Donna’s Drapery Shop also offers installation, a necessity, according to Harrison. “Installation is very important.
