What’s hot in autumn décor Change the season with a new look
By SYLVIA ANDERSON St. Joseph News-Press
It’s a sunny 100 degrees outside, but Jamie Withrow is decorating for fall and Halloween. She is the owner of Jamie’s Secret Garden in St. Joseph and is known for her interior design skills and enticing seasonal displays. “The unwritten rule is you can put up your autumn decorations on Sept. 1 and start adding Halloween the fi rst of October,” she says. “We try to run our store a month ahead.” So far, she has not had a single complaint about seemingly jumping the gun from customers, who are all too happy to be done with summer. On the other hand, autumn decorating sometimes can be a dreary mix of dull oranges and browns. Even Halloween can come off as depressing or tacky if it’s the same thing every year. So we chatted with Jamie about what’s new for the upcoming season.
Burlap “What I love about autumn is the combination of textures. It adds a warmth,” she says. “It’s hard to believe we will want that when it’s a 100 degrees outside, but we will.” A new versatile texture she is seeing is burlap: burlap tablecloths, burlap table runners, burlap-covered lampshades, burlap ribbon tied around lanterns, colored burlap and burlap mixed with French document fabric. Jamie is expecting burlap ornaments to come in for Christmas. Flameless candles Candles add warmth and ambiance to a room, but due to safety concerns, flameless candles are becoming a popular option. They are battery operated, and some look so real you would never guess there was no flame — until they turn off by themselves with a timer or remote control. Some candles,

Espresso primer A quick look at popular coffeehouse offerings
By KEVIN KRAUSKOPF St. Joseph News-Press
Ever walk into a coffee house and find yourself a little overwhelmed by the wealth of options? You’re not alone. “A lot of people come in and don’t know what to order, says Nancy Goode, owner of Cafe Pony Espresso in Downtown St. Joseph. Thankfully, Ms. Goode as well as the staff of Hazel’s Gourmet Coffee, owned by Heather Thompson, were able to provide some help. The next time you’re standing in line, scratching your head and pondering the difference between a cappuccino, macchiato and cafe au lait, refer back to what they have to say here.

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, balance and harmony will reign supreme this week. If there is something you have been meaning to change, now is the time to get it done.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Intentions can be lost when communication is not effective, Taurus. So don’t expect someone to understand simply by your actions alone. Explain yourself along the way. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, sometimes you give off the impression that everything is going well, even when it is not. Hiding your emotions works sometimes, but this week find another strategy. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, most of the time you seem slow and steady. But every once in a while you show some passion that others may not expect from you. These sudden bursts are human.

Change the season with a new look CONTINUED FROM page 1 such as those by Candle Impression, are made of real wax, so they look, feel and even smell (some are scented) like traditional candles, but without the fire hazard. Birds of a feather Birds are always a popular accent in any décor, and the trendy birds this year are owls and peacocks, Jamie says. They are a little more stately and elegant than other birds and can work well in masculine or traditional rooms. The owl is popular for Halloween, too, along with the traditional black crows.
Upscale spiders Spiders have been a standard for Halloween decorating, but this year look for spiders with glitz instead of webs. You’ll see jeweled spiders, miniature spiders and spiders with elegant chenille legs. Set them on pumpkins, suspend them from chandeliers and display them proudly. Lighten up Add some life into fall browns and oranges with what Jamie calls the perfect neutral: lime green. “It’s an enhancer color,” she says. “So when you put it with another color, it enhances the other
color.” The lime trend started about 10 years ago, and she says it’s not fading yet. She also is seeing brighter colors overall, a carryover of the women’s neon color fashion trend. She says sparkly neon purple is the thing for adding excitement to the traditional black and orange Halloween decorations. “It won’t go completely neon, but things are just a little brighter.”
LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, you can’t change the path the stars have set in your place even if you want to. It’s best to simply accept the cards and make the most of them. Jessica Stewar t /St. Joseph News-Press/
Owls are the “in” bird this season for fall and Halloween decorating and purple adds a little excitement to the traditional orange and black colors.

A look at popular coffee offerings CONTINUED FROM page 2
Espresso
First things first. Espresso makes the base of many of the drinks you’ll find on a coffee house menu. It’s similar to brewed coffee but darker, stronger and more concentrated. Espresso is made by forcing hot, pressurized water through finely ground, darkly roasted coffee beans. Typically, it has a thicker consistency and a more bitter taste, “which some people really like,” Ms. Goode says. In cafe speak, shots of espresso are “pulled” from an espresso machine before being combined with the remainder of a drink’s ingredients. The number of shots — roughly an ounce or so each — in a drink often is referred to as a single, double or triple. Caffeine content can vary widely, but there is usually the same amount of caffeine in two to three espresso shots as there is in a cup of regular brewed coffee.
Latte
A latte is simply espres-
so combined with steamed milk in about a 1:2 ratio. The milk masks the coffee flavor, and chocolate, caramel and other flavored syrups often are added to make a mocha latte or similar drink. Lattes also make popular iced drinks, especially during hotter weather. And don’t forget the whipped cream on top for a sweet treat.
Cappuccino
A cappuccino has a stronger coffee flavor than a latte and is made by combining espresso, steamed milk and the velvety milk froth that results from the steaming process in about a 1:1:1 ratio. It is lighter and airier than a latte but still can be paired with flavored syrups — though many cappuccino drinkers prefer to pass on those.
Macchiato
Americano
Espresso is diluted with hot water to make an Americano. The result is a beverage that is most similar to a strong cup of brewed coffee, but an Americano usually is bolder yet.
Cafe au Lait
A cafe au lait, French for “coffee with milk,” is a weaker version of a latte. Hot coffee and steamed milk are mixed in equal ratios, giving a cafe au lait its lighter coffee flavor.
Cafe Breve
Another take on a latte, a standard cafe breve is one part espresso, two parts steamed Half & Half — giving the drink a richer, thicker consistency.
with a dollop of whipped cream. If you need a swift kick in the pants to get your day going, start here.
Mix, match and experiment
Home espresso machines are more affordable than ever, giving coffee lovers the ability to try their hand at creating their own concoctions. Vary the strength of the espresso, the roast of the beans, the proportion of espresso to milk and different added flavorings to come up with something entirely unique. Or, head to your local coffee house and ask what variations they can whip up. “A lot of people like to try something different or get acquainted with something new,” Ms. Goode says.
