HISTORY AND CULTURE ABOUND IN ST. JOSEPH

By Marshall White

Patee House Museum

Visiting St. Joseph for the first time and you’ve only got a day or two to see the town? One will never see all of St. Joseph in less than two days, but you can get a good idea about whether you’d like to come back and see more. If it’s rainy, cold, or snowy outside, consider starting at the Patee House Museum. Here you can get an overview of this community’s history. The museum began life as a luxury hotel in 1858 built by local entrepreneur John Patee. Mr. Patee rented first floor office space in 1860 to a freighting firm called the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company, founders of the Pony Express. Here you can see a stagecoach, climb on board a steam engine, walk down an indoor main street and view all sorts of antique vehicles. And if you’re tired of walking, try a ride on the Wild Thing Carousel. Right next door to the museum is another major attraction that’s part of the city’s claim to national fame – The Jesse James Home. Here

the notorious outlaw was shot to death on April 3, 1882. By now you’ll have easily spent three hours inside and it’s probably lunch time. Consider eating at a local restaurant. A drive four blocks north will lead you to Bleecker Street Deli, which has very good take-out sandwiches. And if the weather is nice, you can eat outside at their picnic tables. A half-block north brings a discriminating eater to the Gothic Tea House and Eatery. Owner Pat McNaughton cooks fresh food daily and is noted for her soups and crustless quiches. Calling ahead is encouraged at both deli and tea house. For the afternoon, consider walking off your lunch. You can take a tour through the historic downtown where many of the 19th century buildings have been saved by converting them into apartment buildings or businesses. There are two historic warehouse districts on the National Register of Historic Places, dozens

of beautiful churches, and don’t forget to visit the statue celebrating the Way West in the park at Third & Edmond Streets. . Visitors can also walk through the attractive Museum Hill neighborhood filled with dozens of historic homes and one of the city’s crown jewels – The Wyeth Tootle Mansion. It’s filled with three stories of local and neighborhood history. The city has several other historic neighborhoods that are recommended for a drive, including Cathedral Hill, Lover’s

Lane and the Harris-Kemper Neighborhood. But throughout the city, one can see historic homes built in a wide variety of architectural styles by a number of nationally recognized architects. Another walking tour should include Mount Mora Cemetery. Established in 1851, it is the oldest operating cemetery in St. Joseph and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The architecture in the cemetery is incredible and it is the burial place for three Missouri Governors, Pony Express Riders and other famous past residents. Many more tours and itineraries can be found at the Visitors Center at 502 N Woodbine, or the Visitors Bureau offices at 109 S. 4th Street.

By Chris Fleck Sometimes I do business with people on Craigslist in the Kansas City Metro Area. When I mention I’m in St. Joseph, it often generates an inordinate amount of huffing and puffing on the other end of the line. What most Kansas City folks forget is that St. Joseph is closer to Kansas City International Airport than many neighborhoods in their own area . . . about 35 minutes north. It’s an easy daytrip if you know the right places to visit. St. Joe, as the locals call it, has a thriving live music scene with several open mic opportunities every week. Years ago, classic rock cover bands mostly took the local stage, but today it’s exciting to be home to a growing number of local bands garnering national attention, including Radkey, a local punk band. They’ve recently been featured on MTV and are currently touring the globe. Visitors can also catch

several more up and comers including Dsoedean, Eyelit and Scruffy & the Janitors. During spring and summer months, you can enjoy monthly outdoor music events such as Parties on the Parkway along the city’s boulevard system and Sounds of Summer at Coleman Hawkins Park on Felix Street Square. Some of the Local restaurants & bars that feature live music regularly include The First Ward, Bad Art Bistro, Fosters Martini Bar, Piatto 614, Norty’s, The HiHo, Magoon’s Delicatessen, the Muny Inn and the Rendezvous. If country music is your scene, St. Joe offers The Buffalo Bar & No Place. You’ll find a large number of dining choices while you’re 2014 St. Joseph Missouri Official Visitors Guide

in “The Joe.” Sure we have our share of national chains, but we also offer some great “mom & pop” restaurants. Dine in the company of gourmet chefs at Piatto 614, Bad Art Bistro, JC Wyatt House and AlbrechtKemper Museum of Art, or grab some burgers & wings at the HiHo, Norty’s, Ground Round and the First Ward. Steaks at 36th Street, the Fredrick Inn and the Hoof & Horn, Greek cuisine from Gyro Paradise, a familystyle chicken restaurant called Galvin’s, unique Cajun cuisine at Boudreaux’s Louisiana Seafood & Steaks or famous tacos and enchiladas from Barbosa’s are all great choices. St. Joseph has a thriving visual arts culture as well. See pieces by such artists as Wayne

Teibold, Red Grooms and Mary Cassat at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art. Each August help us celebrate our local heritage as the jumping off point to the West at our Trails West!® Music and Art Festival, where you are treated to fabulous food and national musical acts. Trails West!® is just one of 12 annual festivals in St. Joseph. If you enjoy being outdoors, our 26-mile Parkway System is a beautiful green belt that connects Krug Park in the north part of our city to Hyde Park in the south end of town. Another great destination trip in the summer months is to see the Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp, during which many area businesses offer lodging and dining specials. So, the next time you’re searching for something new to do in Northwest Missouri, or are in and around Kansas City, just remember the neighbors to the North. We’re only 35 minutes away and we’d love to see you here in St. Joseph.

older kids, the Glore Psychiatric Museum is a treasure too good to miss. An added bonus is that two other fantastic museums are housed in the same building: the St. Joseph Museum and the St. Joseph Black Archives. These three museums show many intriguing aspects of history, from the fascinating and sometimes gory history of psychiatric medicine, to Civil War and Native American artifacts, to the many incredible achievements and contributions of St. Joseph’s African American citizens. On the educational-fun side, St. Joseph’s many museums offer a glimpse into the area’s colorful history. The Pony Express Museum, housed inside the original Pike’s Peak Stables, makes the history of the famous mail service come alive with interactive displays and even dress-up and pretend areas for the kids. The St. Joseph Fire Museum features several antique fire trucks and other equipment. The Robidoux Row Museum is housed in the restored home of St. Joseph’s founder, Joseph Robidoux. Not far from there is Fort Smith Park, an excavated fort used by Union soldiers in the Civil War, complete with replica cannons and ordnance shed. The National Military Heritage Museum is sure to captivate your patriotic side and the Wyeth-Tootle Mansion will pique your Victorian-cultural interests. If science/natural history is your thing, St. Joseph won’t let you down. The Remington Nature Center has tons of great exhibits, including interactive ones, and even a lifesized woolly mammoth mother and calf. The museum is located beside the Missouri River and has a lovely handicap-accessible trail. If the macabre interests you and your 2014 St. Joseph Missouri Official Visitors Guide

EXPERIENCE THE OF DOWNTOWN ST. JOSEPH

!

By Amy Heath

As a New York City transplant, I am a person who believes in supporting local businesses, sustainable living, and local arts and culture. We live right in the heart of downtown St. Joseph where all of these components mingle perfectly. There is so much to do, all within walking distance with beautiful architecture all around. Looking for a unique place to stay? There are two fantastic Bed and Breakfast mansions, blocks from the downtown shopping area. The Whiskey Mansion and the Shakespeare Chateau are amazing inside and out and have very friendly service. The owner’s attention to detail is apparent in every way. There are two standout boutiques downtown. Mod Podge is a very unique place with handmade recycled scarves and handbags. The owner has a terrific eye for the next trend and you can always find a great gift for the women in your life. There is also The Lucky Tiger, a vintage, vinyl and antique curiosity shop that is very well-curated with the inventory in great condition. They have a music and art event every first Saturday of the month and it’s a great place for meeting the creative people in town.

Downtown St. Joseph is a lovely spot for a quick bite or a delicious dinner. Start your day off at The Pony Espresso with their gourmet coffee and healthy vegan friendly soups and sandwiches. This is a quaint, relaxing place to meet a friend for lunch while you gaze at the art on the walls, which changes every month. There are poetry readings and other rotating events happening every month. Downtown also gets to boast having one of the best bakeries in town, appropriately named Delish. They make melt-inyour-mouth cupcakes and to creative custom cakes for weddings, birthdays and showers. Other baked goods such as croissants and biscotti are delicious, too. For a pre-or-post dinner drink try Foster’s Martini Bar. Inside, the smoke-free atmosphere has an extensive drink list and outdoor patio, with table service. Unique art and paintings line the wall and there are often great jazz, rock and blues players on the weekends. If you are looking for a livelier scene, make your way over to Magoon’s Famous Delicatessen, open since 1918.

This delicatessen by day houses local and traveling musicians by night. They have several nights of blues and rock jam sessions each week. This place is the real deal with fabulous antique relics lining the shelves and walls. You can really feel the history in this place, and the clientele are as varied as the music. Want to catch something a little more cultural? There are two great theaters downtown. The bigger and more historic is the Missouri Theatre which serves as a cultural center for the arts for organizations such as the Robidoux Resident Theatre, Performing Arts Association and the St. Joseph Symphony and more. The theater also acts as a performance venue for many traveling productions, musicals and comedic acts. It is a beautiful building inside and out which showcase the amazing architecture and design from 1927.

they host smaller plays, jazz ensembles and variety shows along with wonderful cuisine. One of the best things to do downtown is to walk around and take in the grandiose architecture of a bygone era. It is about as photogenic as any urban center I’ve ever seen and many visitors love to snap photos of interesting bits of preserved buildings. And at the end of the day, there is nothing better than strolling along the River Walk to catch another beautiful Midwestern sunset. Interior of Shakespeare Chateau

The second venue is the Robidoux Landing Playhouse. This dinner theatre close to the Missouri River was established in 1979, and
