S T RO K E T E L E M E D I C I N E bringing the future to the bedside Stroke patients have a three-hour window for diagnosis and treatment. To save precious time within the three-hour window, Heartland Regional Medical Center has partnered with Mayo Clinic to bring telemedicine to the bedside. This new technology includes a bedside camera and monitoring system where our specially trained neurologists can assess stroke patients remotely. With a telemedicine laptop equipped with a camera, the neurologist can see the stroke patient, ask questions, view lab results, MRI images, vital signs and zoom in and out on the equipment in the room or see more closely the patient’s facial features for further assessment. The stroke telemedicine robot also has a screen for the patient to see and interact with a Heartland neurologist. This technology dramatically reduces the three-hour window for stroke assessment and action. Why is that three hours so important? Heartland neurologists must assess, diagnose and treat the stroke patient within three hours of the beginning signs of a stroke for clot dissolving medication to be effective. The three-hour window is also important to prevent permanent damage. If you or someone you know shows the signs or symptoms of a stroke, call 911 immediately to get to the nearest medical facility. At Heartland Regional Medical Center, when a 911 call comes in on a stroke patient we call a Stroke Alert so the Emergency Department and neurologist are prepared for our stroke patients before they arrive.

Iron workers place steel beams in a portion of the Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica administration building that will be enclosed in glass. Construction of the 100,000-square-foot facility is on schedule for completion in June of 2012 thanks to the dry conditions in St. Joseph last summer. When the building is completed, approximately 300 people will work there.
Modern work force demands new skills Most jobs in today’s market require some form of higher education to handle technical realities of modern employment 6 Profiles of Progress, March 25, 2012, St. Joseph News-Press

he St. Joseph work force has changed in the past 10 years. The days of abundant factory jobs with good pay and great benefits are being traded for services, life sciences and a more skilled class of workers. Larry Mace has seen a completely different set of job orders come through his office at The Staffing Center. For example, he said, there are still manufacturing jobs out there, but now those businesses want a welder and CNC machinist. “The days of the general laborer are greatly reduced,” Mr. Mace said. “I think right now, nationwide, there are 3.5 million jobs, and half of those have been posted for more than 90 days. We’re having trouble filling them.” Companies have grown cautious in the recession and their hiring habits reflect that. Of the 20 current openings at the employment agency, Mr. Mace said that about eight are manufacturing and the rest are clerical and administrative. “But rather than broad computer

experience, now they want software-particular experience,” he said. “Companies are not hiring unless it really adds to their productivity and efficiency.” Companies aren’t taking a chance to hire when they don’t have that exact position available, Mr. Mace said. “They used to hire when we had anticipation of an increase in business,” he said. “Now companies can’t afford to do that.” Another big change is the age of the local work force. Unemployment numbers often fail to highlight the impact on those aged 16 to 18. That number has hit as high as 24 percent. “There used to be a day where there were minimum-wage jobs available for them,” Mr. Mace said. “Now retirees are working into their 70s and the young people aren’t getting those jobs and the experience.” Work force development has been a big focus for the St. Joseph community, from the local school dis-
tricts to higher education and trade schools. “The challenge is to transition available workers to those positions and help them obtain the skills and training that is necessary to work in those positions,” said Ted Allison, president and chief executive officer at the St. Joseph Metro Chamber. “Work force development has been a major part of our focus. But from what we hear, whether it’s from large employers or our smallest, is that we are in excellent shape.” St. Joseph has always been a diverse community, and right now Mr. Allison and Mr. Mace see the economy being the much of the same. “We have every reason to be optimistic,” Mr. Allison said. “We are obviously impacted by the world trade environment and global economy, but it appears that we’re faring very well.” A majority of the local industries, including manufacturing, services and life sciences, are growing and hiring. “We are excited about the diverse recovery where we don’t have all of our eggs in one basket,” Mr. Allison said. What Must I Do To Be Saved? Perhaps the most important question a human being can ask is, “What must I do to be saved?” We can find the question in the New Testament in Acts 16:30, asked by the Philippian Jailer. Those who were convicted of crucifying the Messiah by the apostle Peter in Acts chapter 2 asked, “…what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37). Jesus in Acts 9:5, 6 told Saul to go into Damascus, and it would be told him what he must do. In Acts 22:10 Saul said, “What shall I do, Lord?” Have you asked that question? Are you looking in the right place, the New Testament? When we turn to the Inspired Word of God (II Timothy 3:16; II Peter 1:3) to find what is involved in becoming saved, we must allow God’s Word to be the final answer, the only answer, that will guide us into that straight and narrow way to Heaven, God’s eternal home, because that is what being saved is all about; Matthew 7:13, 14. When you study your New Testament, you will find that there are five works from God that we must do in order to be saved from our past sins. (All that God tell us to do are ‘works’ from Him: John 6:28, 29) 1. We must hear the Gospel: Romans 10:17, but not be hearers only: James 1:22, 23. 2. We must believe the Gospel: John 3:16, but not be believers only: James 2:24, 26. 3. We must repent of our sins: Acts 17:30, 31, which means we turn away from them: I Cor. 6:9 – 11. 4. We must confess Christ before men: Matthew 10:32; Romans 10:9, 10, which is the ‘good confession’ we read about in I Timothy 6:13. See also Hebrews 4:14; 10:23. 5. We must be baptized into Christ for the remission of our sins: Acts 2:38; 8:36 – 38; 10:37, 48; 16:30 – 34; 18:8; 22:16. This is the new birth: John 3:3-5. This is where we reach the soul savings blood of Jesus Christ: Romans 6:3-6. This is how we get into Christ: Galatians 3:26, 27, which puts us into His body, the church: I Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 1:22, 23; 4:4; of which He is the Savior: Ephesians 5:23. This is the washing of regeneration: Titus 3:5. This is how our Creator has chosen to save us through obedience to Him with a good conscience: I Peter 3:21; Hebrews 5:8, 9. When we accomplish these works from God, He delivers us out of the power of darkness, and translates us into the kingdom of the Son of His love: Colossians 1:12-14. This is how we purify our souls, by obeying the Truth: I Peter 1:22. Question, are we saved eternally at this point? Certainly not! Read Acts 14:22; II Peter 1:10, 11. We must give much diligence to walk worthily of the calling wherewith we were called…keeping the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace: Ephesians 4:1-6; II Peter 1:5-11. We must work out our own salvation: Philippians 2:12. The apostle Paul knew he could fall away from the Faith, and be rejected by God: I Corinthians 9:24-27. Some Christians did fall away from Grace: Galatians 5:4, 7. We must seek to be ‘True Worshippers’ in God’s sight: John 4:23, 24. This involves assembling with Christians: Hebrews 10:25. Five worship activities are found in the New Testament for us to do: Sing together: Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16. Pray together: Acts 2:42; 12:5. Study God’s Word together: Acts 2:42; 17:11. On the Lord’s Day, Sunday, we are to take the Lord’s Supper: Acts 20:7; I Cor. 11:23-29; and give of our means: I Cor. 16:1, 2. Are you doing these things dear reader? If not, why not? Won’t you seek to become a true worshipper in God’s sight? Yes, there are many worshippers today, but God will accept only ‘true’ worshippers. All other worshippers are either ‘vain’ worshippers; Matthew 15:8, 9; ‘ignorant’ worshippers; Acts 17:23; or will-worshippers; Colossians 2:20-23. We pray that you will study these Scriptures with your Bible, and obey His will. We encourage you to come and visit any of our worship and Bible study gatherings. We would also be happy to schedule a home Bible study with you at your convenience, or mail you a correspondence course.

Joseph to eliminate the need to pump sewage to its main plant. Mayor Bill Falkner used his State of the City address in February to tell the audience the community’s leap of faith may soon pay off. According to the mayor, staff from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources have selected the Whitehead Creek Stormwater Separation Conduit and the Eastside Improvement Project for inclusion in its “fundable” category for its intended use plan for federal funds. In other words, the city may soon learn it has secured a significant savings on sewer projects. “While it will not become official until the Clean Water Commission meets in March, the approval would mean a savings over the next 20 years of about $7.9 million for the taxpayers,” Mr. Falkner said. And it could not have happened without St. Joseph’s voters. Clinton Thomas can be reached at clinton.thomas@newspressnow.com. Follow him on Twitter: @SJNPThomas.
Crews will work to install improvements to the St. Joseph sewer system that will lessen the likelihood of raw sewage releases into the Missouri River. The Environmental Protection Agency has mandated these improvements after monitors observed several such releases during periods of heavy rain, endangering downstream water supplies. It’s important to know that these two facilities also are available to the public on a rental basis. The Geiger Shooting Range, with the new Herzog Lodge, offers an excellent alternative for group/business meetings or client entertain-
ment. The Sporting Clays course provides a variety of targets suitable for all skill levels. Project C.O.P.E. is a national program of the Boy Scouts of America. C.O.P.E. is an acronym for “Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience” and is designed to provide all participants challenges that encourage teamwork and leadership skills. Today’s new state-of-the-art course offers quite a variety of high and low stations. For more information, contact the Pony Express Council office at (816) 233-1351. We know the consequences of overpopulation and abandonment that result from neglecting to spay and neuter pets. We train our pets by humane methods. We have leash laws instead of letting them run free. Older pets have so many options to make them more comfortable. There are service dogs, therapy dogs, police dogs and cats that comfort the dying. For every advance in how we care for pets, it seems they repay us a hundred times over. The bonds that exist between humans and pets are powerful and continue to thrive. No matter what happens in the world, pets provide a deep friendship that touches us unlike any other. What does it take to adopt a pet from the St. Joseph Animal Shelter? Food, shelter, play time, veterinary care and your companionship is all that is needed to make both of you content. Many pets have the basics but lack for human companionship, and then the pet acts out due to boredom and loneliness. If you can provide all of those things, seek out your local shelter or check the websites petforu.com and petfinder. com.

Year established: 1860 2011 was a year of anticipation for the Pony Express Museum. Construction began on the Pony School, a 900-square-foot, one-room schoolhouse reproduction, with a groundbreaking ceremony in early April. Students from Hillyard Technical Center began construction of the framework located outside the Pony Express Museum near Mitchell Avenue and Ninth Street. The schoolhouse is modeled after 1860s schoolhouses, similar to those used by children during the days of the Pony Express. “The bead board is correct, the flooring is correct, the windows are correct, the doors are correct, the roof is correct ... so the majority of the schoolhouse is very appropriate for the 1860s,” said Cindy Daffron,

Atchison (Kan.) Hospital’s old patient rooms helped spur the initiative to get to a new facility, which opened in January 2010. With the move, the hospital’s semi-private rooms and a non-ADA acceptable patient shower transitioned to private rooms with
pull-out couches for visiting relatives. The facility also has state-of-the-art surgical suites, which provide more space for equipment-intensive orthopedic procedures. The smallest suite at the old hospital was 208 square feet; the smallest one at the new facility is 400 square feet and its largest, 640 square feet. There also are two designated GI rooms for colonoscopies. Though CEO John Jacobson said there are no plans for further building projects, each major unit has an
“expansion corridor” that would allow the hospital to increase that department’s capacity. As other hospitals in the region, Atchison Hospital will focus on its electronic medical record initiative, a MEDITECH system, which began several years ago. “We didn’t lose much momentum with the move,” Mr. Jacobson said. Atchison Hospital will celebrate the organization’s centennial this year as well. Jennifer Gordon can be reached at jennifer.gordon@newspressnow.com. Follow her on Twitter: @jjgordon. Energy firm developing next generation of biofuels By RAY SCHERER
A St. Joseph News-Press
company with a presence in St. Joseph continues to make headway in developing and producing the next generation of ethanol-based fuels. ICM Inc., which is based in Colwich, Kan., is working to create new types of ethanol through efforts at a pilot plant located on the Lifeline Foods campus in St. Joseph. The facility is developing cellulosic ethanol by small-scale production from such materials as switch grass, sorghum and corn fiber. ICM partially owns Lifeline and has provided proprietary technology to more than 100 ethanol facilities in North America. Work on the ICM pilot plant began in 2007, with an initial focus on starch-based ethanol testing. Dr. Douglas Rivers serves as the plant’s research and development director and is supervising the cellulosic project. 58 Profiles of Progress, March 25, 2012, St. Joseph News-Press
“We’ve added significant staff over the course of about the past six months,” he said. “We’ll have some in production this year.” More than 50 employees have joined the staff recently, Dr. Rivers said, with a handful more workers planned during the course of the year. The $30 million capital investment, mostly in equipment, was partially funded through the U.S. Department of Energy. The project relies on three Platte County farms to provide the feedstocks. A receiving area processes and pre-treats the bales. Construction of the pilot plant began in August 2010 and finished at midyear of 2011. “Then we began shaking down the system,” Dr. Rivers said. “We checked for water tightness.” ICM first tried working with corn fiber last fall. “It’s easier to deal with than switch grass and sorghum,” he said. “We’re
working out the conditions that we need in the pre-treatment system so it works like it did in the lab. ... We feel like the corn fiber is low-hanging fruit, as far as commercialization is concerned.” Integrated runs of the entire process began in late February. The energy department requires a qualification run to ensure the system is operating as designed. Company officials believe that the first opportunity for commercializing cellulosic ethanol will arrive by 2014. Sorghum and switch grass still hold promise as an ethanol fuel base. “We’re glad to be here,” Dr. Rivers said. “It’s a longterm investment. We’re not going anywhere.” Ray Scherer can be reached at ray.scherer@newspressnow. com. Follow him on Twitter: @SJNPScherer.

Nestled in downtown St. Joseph, Sunshine Electronic Display Corp. has been quietly manufacturing signage since 1972. One of the less publicized local success stories, Sunshine’s products are nonetheless highly visible in the community. Fastgas, Loves, Nodaway Valley Bank, Trex, and Wiedmaier’s Truck Stop all employ Sunshine’s LED displays. Outside of St. Joseph, Sunshine units are displayed from coast to coast in the fuel, lottery, hotel, and banking industries. Steady growth has seen recent expansion in Sunshine’s new office building and renovated production facility. Rather than move operations,
Sunshine remained at its original location across from the YMCA. The decision to stay downtown shows Sunshine’s dedication to revitalizing the heart of St. Joseph. Attention to detail and quality of the new campus reflects not only the high company standards, but also the long-term commitment to the community. In the year ahead, Sunshine will further upgrade its production facility to meet growing demand, all the while continuing to employ local workers and vendors to produce something truly American-made. By fueling the local economy and workforce, Sunshine hopes to help make St. Joseph a wellspring of commerce once again.

It’s hard to imagine when you look down the Belt Highway where the Shoppes at North Villiage reside that a few years ago the former Green Acres building was surrounded by farm fields. The roof to the old building needed to be replaced and until recently, the old building seemed to be a deteriorating eyesore among retail shopping giants. Now the roof is going up on a new 80-room extended-stay hotel. The four-story, $5.5 million Candlewood Suites will open next spring. But we’re being patient right now.” County commissioners initially envisioned retail but now consider the space to be more beneficial for a business park of sorts. Mr. Hausman said there are still a lot of mixed emotions on what to do with it. “The East Side has really devel-

The Shoppes at North Village still has a few pad sites available for development, and the new Dick’s Sporting Goods and Aldi’s should be open this spring. “It’s all a good sign of growth during what is still being considered a recession,” Mr. Evans said. “But our area is booming. receiving a fair amount of media attention. “We would like to be able to interpret things,” she said. “We want them to experience the heritage and culture.” The alliance is negotiating with a bike federation to develop a Highway 36 tour. All communities have been involved with strategic planning. “Ultimately we’d like to see a couple of visitor centers,” Ms. Bennett said. The potential for turning Highway
36 into a scenic byway — complete with rest stops and other amenities — would require federal and state funds. John Deis of the Caldwell County Area Business Association said Highway 36 traffic already has increased and that converting I-70 into a toll road would add more traffic and business. “Further, additional traffic seeking to avoid I-70 would use (Missouri) Route 13 through Caldwell County as part of a ‘shortcut’ to bypass Kansas City to go both north
and south to connect to I-35, Route 36, Route 50 and even I-44,” Mr. Deis said. The association is working with the city of Hamilton, Mo., to develop a comprehensive plan to capitalize on new business opportunities, membership in the alliance and increased highway traffic. Mr. Deis said the long-range planning should include connecting and mapping businesses to the Internet for travelers. Ray Scherer can be reached at ray.scherer@newspressnow.com.
