Southside Fall Festival September 16, 17 and 18

Time for the 23rd annual Southside Fall Festival The weather is getting cooler and the leaves are beginning to turn, which in St. Joseph means it’s once again time for the Southside Fall Festival. The event will be noon to 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 17 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 18 at Hyde Park. As always, the festivities will include handmade crafts, two stages of live entertainment, childrens’ activities and games, animal rides and karaoke (Friday and Saturday). At 9:15 p.m. Friday, there will be fireworks by Aerial FX. And it wouldn’t be a festival without food, so you can expect to find ice cream, kettle corn, root beer, funnel cakes, corn dogs, brats, BBQ, onion blossoms, pizza, curly fries, tenderloins, turkey legs, beef burgers, roasted corn, gyros, Polish sausage, Italian sausage, hamburgers, hot dogs, tacos and more. The hospitality tent can be found near the new playground equipment and will host a lost and found and first aid by Hands of Hope Hospice.

Also available at the Hospitality Tent sponsored by the South Side Progressive Association will be 23rd annual South Side Fall Festival Tshirts, hoodies, sweatshirts and caps. T-shirts range in price from $6 to $11; sweatshirts are $14 to $15; hoodies are $23; and caps are $9 and $11. Skateboards, rollerblades, wheelies, bicycles, scooters, alcohol, coolers, handbills and pets on leashes or in carriers are prohibited within the festival grounds. Service animals are welcome. There will be a community worship service at the Gazebo from 9 to 10 a.m. Sept. 18. Pastors Laura Blevins (St. Paul UMC) and Jeremy Blevins (Deer Park Grace UMC) will be the guest speakers, and Hymns & Her will be providing special music. This year’s festival grand marshal is J. L. Robertson, a St. Joseph native who joined his South Side family business, Rupp Funeral Home, in 1994. Mr. Robertson has been vice chairman of the festival and chairman of the parade.
