24th annual South Side Fall Festival set for Sept. 14 through 16 The 24th annual South Side Fall Festival will take place Sept. 14 through 15 in Hyde Park. Festivities kick off at noon Sept. 14 and run until 10 p.m. that day. Additional hours for the festival are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 15 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 16. As always, the festival will include handmade crafts, children’s games and activities and animal rides. There also will be two stages of live entertainment throughout the festival and karaoke Friday and Saturday. And of course, there is the food. Among the tasty items you’ll find are ice cream, kettle corn, root beer, funnel cakes, corn dogs, brats, BBQ, onion blossoms, pizza, curly fries, tenderloins, turkey legs, beef burgers, roasted corn, gyros, Polish sausage, Italian sausage, hamburgers, hot dogs and tacos. The music starts at 1 p.m. on Friday on

the two stages. At 6 p.m., opening ceremonies will be held at the gazebo. The music starts again at 7 p.m. and runs until the

fireworks start at around 9:15 p.m. Events Saturday start off with the South Side Fall Festival 5K family run/

walk sponsored by Performance Plus Rehabilitation at 9:30 a.m., followed by the parade at 10 a.m. lead by 2012 grand marshals Jeff and Carolyn Sampson. On Sunday, the day begins with a church service at 9 a.m. by Faith Valley Baptist at the gazebo. In addition to music, Sunday’s events also feature the Q-Country Baby Show at 1 p.m. And head over to No Place Dance Bar, 3414 S. 22nd St., for the SSFF Car Show, sponsored by South Side Rotary, also at 1 p.m. For more information on the car show, call Karen Price at 236-1805. The hospitality tent, sponsored by the South Side Progressive Association, can be found near the new playground equipment. It will host a lost and found, first aid by Hands of Hope Hospice and childfinders. Festival T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies and caps also will be available.

Annual parade, walk/run kick off Saturday events at festival The South Side Fall Festival parade and 5K family run/walk get the party started Sept. 15. The popular parade, sponsored by Benton SPTA, begins at 10 a.m. and will be lead by 2012 grand marshals Jeff and Carolyn Sampson. Jeff and Carolyn Sampson both were born in St. Joseph and both graduated from Benton High School in 1977. They have been married since 1977 and have two grown children, T.J.(married to Jill) and Jennifer (married to Jeff Rodgers). They also have three grandchildren, Logan, Mattingly and Emma. Jeff and Carolyn have been the owners of the Clark-Sampson Funeral Home since 1987. Jeff works in the business with their son, TJ. Carolyn also is an agent with American Family Insurance with an office on King Hill Avenue. They both are members of the South St. Joseph Progressive Association. Jeff was the first president of the group in 1987. Carolyn is currently the secretary and is also a past president and treasurer. The parade follows its traditional route: North on King Hill Avenue from the King Hill Plaza, turning

left at Illinois Avenue (the fire station) to Gordon Street. Then the parade turns left and ends at the Carnegie Library. Parade donations will be accepted for the March of Dimes. ■ Bands, Benton, Missouri Western, Shriners and other groups line up at Kovac’s/King Hill Plaza, 7014 King Hill Ave. ■ All elementary and middle school units enter the parade from Hosea School, 6401 Gordon St. ■ Vehicles, floats and bigger units line up at South Side Lanes in the Kovac’s Plaza, 6938 King Hill Ave. ■ Equestrians line up at Kovac’s Fireworks, 7701 King Hill Ave. Before the parade, there once again will be the 5K family run/walk, sponsored by Performance Plus Rehabilitation, starting at 9:30 a.m. The race course follows the parade route and

begins approximately one mile south of the parade start at Faith United Baptist Church. The pre-registration cost for the run/walk is $25 for adults and $15 for kids 14 and under. On race day, the price goes up to $30 for adults and $15 for kids 14 and under. Proceeds from the race will go toward the Benton High School Scholarship Fund. Participants may register in person at Performance Plus Rehabilitation Center or online at www. enter2run.com. The first 50 participants to register will receive a South Side Fall Festival 5k run/walk T-shirt. The event is chip timed, and an award ceremony will take place at the finish line when results have been tabulated. An overall male and female trophy will be awarded as well as the top three in each age group, male and female. The age groups are 10 and under; 11 to 14; 15 to 19; 20 to 24; 25 to 29; 30 to 34; 35 to 39; 40 to 44; 45 to 49; 50 to 54; 55 to 59; and 60 and older. Calling all cute babies Always a popular event at the festival, Q-Country will again host a baby show in Hyde Park. The baby show will be at 1 p.m. in the gazebo. Register your child at the east entrance of the park from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 14 and 1 to 5 p.m. Sept. 15. Babies must be preregistered to compete. Show off your car This year’s South Side Fall Festival will include a car show, sponsored by South Side Rotary. The event will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 16 in the parking lot of No Place Dance Bar, 22nd and Garfield streets. Set up and entry runs from 9 a.m. to noon. There is a $20 per vehicle entry fee. Judging results and awards will be announced at 2 p.m. Trophies will be awarded.
