years ago, at the start of the American Civil War, our nation entered into a period of change. And now a century and a half later, change is also coming to the grounds of Trails West! as organizers prepare for a new and improved festival. It’s time to commemorate the “Civil War-Divided Loyalties” with Trails West! 2011 in St. Joseph Aug. 19-21. Trails West! is the same, and different, for 2011. The 19th year will continue to have long-time favorites like great food, excellent art and top-notch entertainment, but they’re making a few changes to shake things up a bit. This year, instead of isolating each art form in a different part of the park, each aspect (fine art, crafts and children’s art) will be integrated into several different “villages.” “This gives patrons a chance to sample parts of Trails West! they may never have experienced simply because they weren’t able to move around the park,” says festival Chair Scott Johnson. The names for the villages are “South Paw Paw Village,” “East Rockhouse Village” and “West Fort Smith,” and they will include everything from metal flying pigs to fine jewelry, paintings, photographs, sculptures, leather, wood working, perfumes, apparel and varieties of delicious food. In addition to the evolving atmosphere, the festival itself will be a commemoration of St. Joseph’s involvement in the American Civil War. “Our 2011 Trails West! theme commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, with living history exhibits by re-enactors from both the

FESTIVAL HOURS 5 to 10:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19 | 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20 | noon to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21. Admission to the festival granted with a 2011 souvenir button or 2011 Trails West! T-shirt. Buttons, good for all three days of the festival, are $6 in advance and $8 at the festival gates. All festival guests over the age of 12 will need a button for admission. Trails West! T-shirts must be purchased in advance and can be worn to the festival instead of purchasing a button. This year the festival will showcase the history of the Civil War by hosting encampments, reenactments, Civil War poets and storytellers, artifact displays, Civil War-era music, a costume parade and an Abe and Mary Lincoln dress-up contest. The Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln look-alike contest begins on the Family Stage Saturday at
10:30 a.m. Those interested in participating should register for the contest at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Family Stage. There are two different judging categories: children up to 16, and 17 and above. Trails West! also is bringing the past to life with a look at both the Confederate and Union troops. Civil War re-enactments and encampments will demonstrate the differences between the armies. The re-enactors perform on the hillside on both Saturday and Sunday. Civil War poet

The Saint Joseph Symphony Civil War Band performs on the City Stage at 1:30 p.m. and on the Family Stage at 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Civil War musicians Cathy Barton and Dave Para will share folk music from long ago. Their performance begins at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon on the Family Stage. To add to this year’s excitement, the Remington Nature Center of St. Joseph will present a program on the Civil War in Missouri, complete with authentic Civil War artifacts. The program begins at 12:15 p.m. Sunday on the Family Stage. A brand new addition to the festival is the creation of the Trails West! Bistro. This new tent will feature a “Wine 101” session on Friday evening from 5 to 8 p.m., and wine pairings with food samples from several St. Joseph caterers and restaurants from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday. The tent will remain open to festival attendees until 8 p.m. on Saturday evening to accommodate wine tasting. Wine, cheese and food samples are a ticket each, or five tickets for a full glass of wine. It simply wouldn’t be Trails West! without a tempting assortment of festival food like barbecue, funnel cakes, ice cream, kettle corn, roasted nuts, Philly cheesesteaks, tenderloins, hamburgers, Philly nachos, Reubens, deep-fried Twinkies, old-fashioned root beer and 50-plus flavors of shaved ice, among many other items. Carriage rides by Duncan Carriages will return to the festival this year. Ride pick-up and drop -off is at the northeast entrance of the festival grounds. Rides are $6 for adults and $4 for kids. “There’s nowhere else in the Midwest offering this caliber of entertainment at this price,” says Teresa Fankhauser, executive director, of the Allied Arts Council. “We’re very fortunate in St. Joseph to have the kind of community support that makes the festival one of the best entertainment options all year. Having the history of the Civil War as a theme adds an extra element.”

Ready to rock In addition to changing the layout of the festival, the Main Stage entertainment also is undergoing a renovation of sorts. FRIDAY NIGHT will feature the Tex-Mex rock band, Los Lonely Boys. After proving itself as one of the most stunning and wonderful musical success stories of the last decade, Los Lonely Boys is now carving out its legend with its fourth studio album, “Rockpango.� Los Lonely Boys embodies the great stylistic moments of an American band when it performs at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 19 at Trails West!. http://loslonelyboys. com/rockpango/track/. The Fabulous Thunderbirds | Saturday | 8:30 p.m. Stage area. Listen up During the Civil War, everyone needed that opportunity to listen to the music and watch the entertainment that surrounded them. On the City and Family stages, the lineup includes many different types of entertainment from blues, to rock, to hypnosis and dance. Entertainment on the City and Family stages includes several new acts as well. Entertainment Co-Chair Allison Stewart says, “We’re very excited to host so many musicians from our area. Each village will feature its own collection of children’s activities. Kids, accompanied by adults, can spend time painting, panning for river gems, receiving airbrush tattoos and face paintings, building craft projects sponsored by Lowe’s Home Improvement or experiencing the activity and movement tent. There also will be various “make it and take it� projects available.
