The bride gets top billing at her wedding. She is the star, the one who turns heads. But to shine brightly on her special day, sometimes the bride needs a little help. And that help doesn’t just start the day of the wedding. The bride begins preparing for her big day well in advance. Everything from weight loss to the perfect hair is on her list. Lisa Bodenhausen, manager of Ideal Weight Loss and Wellness, can offer a customized weightloss program for the bride. The four-step program, which doesn’t use stimulants, can help not only with weight loss but also healthy lifestyle changes. The program and the food are FDA approved, Bodenhausen says. The program was developed for French athletes, she says, and has been used in Europe for 22 years. There is no one-size-fits-all pro-

gram. Everything is customized to the bride’s tastes and abilities, Bodenhausen says. She also advises brides to contact Ideal Weight Loss and Wellness well before the wedding. “Not only will they look good in their wedding dress,” Bodenhausen says, “but they’re going to look good at the beach.” Whether it be the beach or the church, many brides dream of walking down the aisle with a tan. Brides can opt for several sessions in the tanning bed or go for a spray tan. Dave Riggs, owner of Fun Tan, says the Mystic spray tan is a popular choice for brides. “It gives them the bronze golden tan look without the UV exposure,” he says. Please see Page

He recommends starting about three weeks before the wedding if using the regular tanning beds to build up a tan and a day or two before the wedding for the Mystic spray tan. The bride wants her skin to look its best on her big day, and the pros at Advanced Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center offer a variety of services to help. They have skin care products and “sell a whole makeup line, too,” says Charity Wampler, practice manager. If acne is a problem, Wampler recommends an acne facial. Facials and spray tans, she says, are popular with younger brides. More mature brides may opt for Botox treatments to help with anti-aging and wrinkling. Those

brides should begin Botox about four to six months before the wedding. “They need three or four treatments to get the full effects of it,” Wampler says. Pamela Calligan, an aesthetician with Midwest Laser Aesthetics, says a hydrafacial is a great way to rejuvenate skin. “It smooths the skin and infuses the skin with vital nutrients,” she says. Midwest Laser Aesthetics also offers makeup services, featuring mineral makeup. “It’s wonderful for your skin,” Calligan says, “It’s backed by the American Cancer Society,” She recommends that brides do a practice run with their makeup before the wedding. “Brides look the best when they aren’t overdone,” she says, adding that she can do the makeup for the wedding at her office or at the

Of course, which hairstyle to wear on the wedding day is a big question for the bride. “Most brides grow out their hair for the wedding,” says Cara Jeschke, owner of Mix It Up Salon. Longer hair makes it easier to put the hair up, a style that is very popular with brides, Jeschke and Sherri Jackson, owner of Images of You, say. The up do compliments a tiara or veil. The up do, while popular, may be getting a little competition, Jackson says. “It’s kind of going to the big curls,” she says of hairstyles for the bride. Contact your hairstylist as soon as you know your wedding date, both Jackson and Jeschke advise. One thing a bride probably doesn’t consider when planning

Accent that for her wedding is stress. A great way to step back from the wedding planning is to get a massage. Consider taking the groom or your wedding party along, or have your own relaxation day. “It’s so they can kind of chill out,” says Courtney Brooks, owner of Associates of Therapeutic Massage. Try a Swedish massage, which is “very relaxing, slow and rhythmic,” or a therapeutic massage, which is “also rhythmic but more invigorating,” Brooks says. “They can have the room together,” Brooks says of the bride and groom. From DIY to they do it all Cake suppliers, caterers can make the food for your big day be its best

he ceremony is just one part of pulling a wedding together. After the “I dos,” there’s a whole party to plan with tables, chairs and entertainment to worry about, not to mention the decorations and food. Ah, yes. The food. If you’re on a shoestring budget and are looking to save a little money on your wedding, you do have options. One of them is to do your cake — or at least part of it — yourself. “I get some that are going to do their own,” says Mag Carmichael, owner of Shirley’s Cakes. “Or their mother is going to do it for them to help them save money. There’s a significant cost savings by doing it yourself.” Carmichael says she sees moms and their daughters coming into the store for everything for the baking bride from pans, separators and columns to dummy cakes and tips. Shirley’s Cakes doesn’t just offer cake decorating supplies, it also has wedding accessories including cake tops, toast glasses, garters, guest books, ring bearer pillows and flower girl baskets. “The popular thing right now is initials for the top of the cake,” Carmichael says. “But you have to special order those. You can’t wait until the last minute. You would be surprised at the number of people who come in here the day before the wedding who still don’t have a cake topper.” “It’s best to have your caterer pretty early on,” Regina Calderwood agrees. The owner of Gina’s Café and Catering says if you want to have your wedding during the busy season, it’s best to find your caterer at least six months ahead of time. And while you’re looking, you need to be doing a lot of tasting. “I think it’s very important to taste the caterer’s food,” she says. “You have to make sure you understand what they’re cooking and if you’ll even like it. It’s amazing to me that people will hire a caterer not having even tasted food made by them.” The caterer says she sits down with every couple to help them figure out what their wedding budget will allow and tailors the food to that budget. And while they’re at it, they also figure out if she will be providing the dishes and utensils or if they’re just interested in having her drop off the food and serving it themselves. Calderwood says it’s an important part of the planning process. Many times people call to order the food and don’t think about the incidentals, but she says the last thing you want to be worrying about on the eve of a big wedding is having to run around trying to figure out ways to keep the food warm. Calderwood says the couple 10 Wedding Planner 2011

also needs to figure out the type of caterer they’re hiring. Is the food made from scratch or is it coming out of a box? It makes a big difference in the quality of the food and the presentation. “Your aunts can go to Sam’s Club and take it out of the box and heat it up for you,” she says. “I’m willing to try just about anything. I’ve even catered Vietnamese food.” While the crew at Hy-Vee has never catered Chinese food for a wedding, it’s definitely an option — as are a myriad of other things. In fact, when a couple comes in to talk to Hy-Vee about catering options, they’ll sit

down with a specialist who will go over all their options. “We have a catering guide, but we’ll sit down with the couple to find out their individual needs,” Don Vessar says. The meal can be as simple or as elegant as the couple wants, with options for everything from hors d’oeuvres to full-plated dinners. And couples have the option of having Hy-Vee set everything up and serve the meal or providing it buffet style. Hy-Vee also can handle the cake and flowers for the wedding. “We offer full-service catering, cake decorating and floral arrangements for their wedding,

all under one roof,” Vessar says. And for them, the advance notice is nice, but not absolutely necessary. “We have had someone come in and order a wedding cake on Friday for a wedding on Saturday,” he says. Ralph Filipelli, owner and chef of Luna’s Catering, sees it a different way. He says while he has stepped up when couples have found themselves without a caterer at the last minute, he prefers to have everything lined up as soon as a couple has picked a date and a location. “A location is the main thing because the location is part of putting it together,” he says. “Some locations require a lot of extra effort. You’re not just buying deli trays from me, you’re buying the whole package, and the full package can be different depending on the location. The Albrecht-Kemper building is different from the Mead building. ... They’re just all different.” What’s also different is what he says Luna’s can do for its clients. Filipelli says if you see it on the Food Network, he can do it — anything from fully served, sit-down dinners for up to 1,200 people to buffets and station foods with international themes. “There could be a Spanish station, sometimes a Japanese station, Italian, French, whatever you want,” he says. “Basically, we offer very creative receptions done any way you want. I have turned tents into upscale restaurants.” Filipelli says the key to a successful reception is to find reputable professionals, screen them well and then trust them. He says if a couple screens caterers well and hires someone they can trust, they need to just sit back and let the professionals do their job. It’s what they were hired to do. “We’ve done these so many times that it doesn’t take very long,” he says. “Just relax and enjoy it.”

In your sites A lot of decisions go into finding the perfect site for your wedding and reception

W

hen it comes to planning your wedding, one of the first decisions you will be making, besides setting a date, is where to hold everything. It’s a tough decision, one that Tracie Rouse takes seriously. The events coordinator for Stoney Creek Inn says in the almost two years she’s been working with couples to make those tough choices, she’s helped dozens come to a decision that works best for them. One of the first things the couple needs to be aware of is the timeline. She says when couples are planning their special day, they need to keep in mind that many of the popular reception sites get filled anywhere from six months to a year ahead of time. “As far as booking a place, they should really look at a year in advance,” she says. “But if they’re flexible on their date, we can get it done in a month.” Once the date is determined, she sits down and talks about their budget. She says couples need to be aware of how much they are 12 Wedding Planner 2011

willing to spend on their site. They also need to consider whether the wedding will be taking place at the same location. “They need to be completely aware of how much money they want to spend,” she says. “If they want everything as far as the food, the host bar, the place, they need to have the budget for it. We don’t run into too many snags because we are so upfront with people. Knowing how much you want to spend is the most vital and then knowing how far you can stretch it.” Rouse says Stoney Creek offers couples just about everything they need for their special day — the complete setup of the ballroom, a gift-opening room, catering and a place to spend the night, just to name a few. “We provide everything except your cake and your DJ,” Rouse says. If you’re looking for a nontraditional wedding setting, Karen Corder, president of BK Vineyards, says she may be able to help. The Buchanan County resident and her

husband, Bob, started the vineyard several years ago. It’s just been within the last few years that they began hosting smaller weddings, since the site can host only about 60 guests. But BK Vineyards is quickly turning into an area favorite. “It’s small and quaint,” she says. “It’s not a big production. The girls are there wanting it on a personal level, and there are not a lot of big things that can go wrong.” Corder says BK Vineyards also is able to host the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. Although they do not provide the catering, she does help out with some of the other planning. “I am also a mini-bridal consultant,” she says. “If they need a referral to a florist or a caterer, I can help them. I have a list of three photographers, three caterers, three DJs. I say here are three ... I know they’re good. These are people that I would trust to do mine.” Another unique location to hold a wedding or reception is the Community Courtyard in Plattsburg, Mo.

Located in one of Missouri’s oldest towns, the restored livery stable and Chicago Skate Factory sat abandoned for years before an East Coast couple stepped in 12 years ago and launched an effort to restore it. Now the site that once made skate parts is home to weddings, reunions and even small concerts. With two levels and 9,000 square feet, a sky-lit atrium and a white wood balcony, Lambeth Zachary says it’s the perfect blend of historic and charming. “It’s just a place I think people would be charmed by,” the event coordinator says. “It’s kind of a blank canvas.” The moderate rental fee includes use of the kitchen facilities, tables and chairs and use of the building for 24 hours. Although Community Courtyard would like to have reservations as soon as possible, it only requires a 30-day notice with a deposit on the fees to reserve the space. The Wyeth-Tootle Mansion is another beautiful spot for intimate


weddings. The mansion is home to four unique parlors. Public relations officer Kathy Reno says each one makes a beautiful setting to hold weddings and receptions. “To me, the beauty of the mansion is its naturally elegant setting,” she says. Couples are able to choose their own caterer, and tables and chairs are available for rent with a maximum seating capacity of 100 guests. Twice that many are allowed if guests are left to mingle. “The parlors in the mansion

create a romantic atmosphere for intimate weddings,” she says. “And it’s a wonderful place for receptions where they can mingle.” Twin Spires has been the scene of weddings for the last 100 years, but it wasn’t until 2003 that weddings became its only purpose. The historic Catholic church was built in 1908 but was given away in the late 1990s by the diocese after it became too difficult to manage the upkeep. Ed and Linda Hood Please see Page 14

[ Celebration spaces ] CONTINUED FROM Page 13 purchased the property in 2003 and turned the old Catholic parish into a wedding chapel. “That’s all it is used for is weddings,” says Twin Spires manager Debbie Young. “We offer the sanctuary for the ceremony and have a reception area in the basement. We do full catering for the receptions, except for the cake.” With seating for 500 guests, the building provides a very traditional wedding atmosphere. Twin Spires boasts old Gothic architecture, 80-foot-tall ceilings, dark beams and stained-glass windows. “The windows in Twin Spires are probably the most beautiful stainedglass windows I have ever seen,” she says. “They have even been featured in national magazines.” The couple needs to provide their own clergy and cake. Other than that, Twin Spires pretty much handles everything — even the decorating. “We set it all up and clean it all up,” Young says. “All they have to

do is come in. They don’t have to do one thing.” Fairview Golf Course also can take care of a lot of the details for you. The 18-hole course may not be an obvious choice for a wedding, but golf course coordinator Penny Wingard says more and more couples are turning to them to host their ceremonies and receptions. And the best part is that unlike many private courses, anyone can book a wedding or reception at Fairview. “They don’t need to be a member here at the golf course to use the facility,” she says. “It’s open to the community.” The facility holds up to 150 guests and has two patios that can accommodate people as well. Wingard says they can handle the food for you and have several packages to choose from. But if you’re interested in having your event at Fairview in 2011, you’ll need to hurry up. “I’m already booking into the end of 2011, so the sooner the better,’ she says.

Finding the dress of your dreams

Your dream of a fairy tale wedding in 2011 is bound to come true. Designers have pulled out all the stops to make it so with their new lines of bridal gowns. Styles have come and gone over the 29 years Bridal Boutique owner Phyllis Fetter has been a bridal consultant. Before that, she spent 20 years as a ladies ready-to-wear buyer and bridal associate at the former Einbender’s. The bridal gowns designers have dreamed up for this year — like those adorned with feathers — even have Fetter surprised. “That’s the biggest trend I’ve seen,” says Fetter, a traditionalist, “but I’m not sure I like fabric flowers and feathers around them. But, we have sold some.” To add dimension to bridal wear, designers sometimes use lots of hand-stitched crystals and large floral appliques. Ruffles, a popular way for designers to add volume 20 Wedding Planner 2011

and femininity to bridal wear over the last few seasons, are being replaced by more tiered, three-dimensional flowers, soft petals and oversized clusters of flower corsages. These are primarily used as accents on the waistline or shoulders. And to make a statement for the Lady Gaga in you, feathers are added to such fabrics as net, lace and organza. Another bridal shop following what’s hot in bridal attire is 2 Trendy, located in downtown St. Joseph. After working in retail, owner Tammy O’Meara decided to open her own business last February aimed at trendy items for women and children. The bridal department was added in March. O’Meara says she stocks 100 gowns and also rents tuxedos and dresses. Her shop also offers alterations.

At 2 Trendy, it’s best to order your bridal gown 12 to 15 weeks before the wedding; alterations can take six to eight weeks. Tuxedos need to be ordered four to six weeks in advance, but if it isn’t a busy season like prom time, just two weeks is plenty. O’Meara says some of the trends from 2010 have carried over into 2011. The bridal gowns come in white and ivory, have lots of beading on them, are styled with sweetheart necklines and are strapless. And the design that is catching on is the mermaid. As far as bridal gown colors, Fetter says diamond white, a slightly off-white with an ivory tone, and ivory, a light gold, are still in. In order to coordinate with the bridesmaids’ gowns, adding color trim to bridal gowns has become popular. The trend for bridesmaids’ dresses is shorter lengths — a practical move for beach weddings, Fetter points out. And in winter or summer, brides and bridesmaids are choosing to go strapless.

The new colors for bridesmaids’ dresses are watermelon and azure, and pastels are good for winter or summer, Fetter says. O’Meara says hot pink, yellow and orange are popular spring colors, while navy, chocolate brown, red and black are popular winter colors. For the groom and groomsmen, designers have come out with khaki suits for island weddings, Fetter says. “The men also go along with the bright colors and coordinate their vest and tie colors with the bridesmaids dresses,” she says. Bridal Boutique carries about 250 gowns in stock, but most brides will choose to order a gown in their size. Since gowns are made long, alterations — available through the shop — will probably be required. Since the gowns are made overseas, Fetter recommends ordering at least three and a half months in advance of the wedding and also allowing time for altering. For the men in the wedding party, Fetter says tuxedos need to be mea-


sured in advance and ordered at least 10 days ahead to avoid extra freight charges. Her shop only offers tuxedo rental. When renting tuxedos and bridesmaids’ dresses, it’s best to order them at the same place so they will match. If the wedding party members live in different locations, measurements can be taken by a local tailor and sent to the store the bride is using. The bad economy has not spared brides seeking that fairy tale wedding. Fetter’s shop has a discounted rack of bridal gowns in the $100 to $500 range. Or, a bride could find a bridesmaid’s dress in white or ivory, often at a fraction of the cost of a bridal gown. O’Meara’s shop extends a 20 percent discount on bridal accessories

if the bridesmaids also get their dresses there. There is also a rack of discounted bridal gowns ranging from $100 to $300 and bridesmaids dresses for $25 to $50 in previous years’ styles. The shop features the designs of Mia Solano and Jovani. O’Meara says Jovani tends to be a “nontraditional and trendy designer.” To give a firsthand glimpse of what 2 Trendy is offering in bridal attire for the new year, O’Meara will be sponsoring a Bridal Expo from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 20 at the downtown United department store building. Bridal vendors will be featured in such areas as catering and hairstyling. There will be a $500 giveaway with participating vendors, other giveaways and fashion shows.

Don’t overlook the small stuff

O

nce you have the date set, the location selected and the caterer hired, it’s time to start looking at some of the other details. Things that won’t affect the final outcome — you’ll still be married after all — but that can affect your memories, photographs and guests’ enjoyment. Some of those things are the biggies — chairs, tables and candelabras. Jeff Black, manager of Belt Rent-All, says they have a number of items available for rent that you may not be able to find in your traditional store. “We have 2½- to 4-gallon champagne fountains, 20-by-20 and 20-by-40-foot tents and white wedding chairs,” he says. “And there’s just a multitude of different types of candelabras that we have for rent.” The key is to contact them early and have the items reserved for you. “If their weddings are in the summertime, they’ll need to be in there six months ahead of time if they want to get something held for them. If they wait too close to the wedding date, if it’s in the summer, they may be out of luck because we do get rented out in the summer on certain weekends.” Regina Calderwood got the idea for her wedding business, Best Seat in the House, when she started look-

ing for chair covers for her own. “We needed covers and no one offered them, so we made them ourselves,” she says. “It just grew from there.” That was nine years ago, and now she has a thriving business renting chair covers, tablecloths and table overlays for weddings. “We have manufactured pretty much all of our stock,” she says. “... I would say 95 percent of our stock is made by us.” The family-owned business includes Regina and her husband, Bill, along with her parents, Ray and Lunetta Lunceford. The family works hard to put in the extra effort. Besides the covers they have in stock, the company is more than willing to make custom covers for couples as well. “If they want to have them match bridesmaids dresses, we will order in fabric and make them,” she says. Of course, having the covers custom-made takes time, but for some couples the extra time and money is worth it. Another personal touch that Best Seat in the House offers is installing the covers and then returning after the reception to collect them. “They don’t have to deal with it at all except to pick out the colors,” Calderwood says. “Once they’ve decided on their color and stuff, we

take it from there. It’s the least expensive way to transform a room. You can bring in every flower or as many candles as you want, but if you still have mismatched metal folding chairs, it won’t look good.” If you’re looking for a special religious item to enhance your wedding, Jeanne Modlin may be able to help. The co-owner of Blessings of St. Joseph says they carry a number of unity candles, wedding crosses and Bibles. “We have a number of samples of unity candles in the store,” she says. “But there are so many different styles and varieties of the unity candles that we do order those.” It may be the newest item, but it’s the lasso rosaries that are the hottest thing right now. In a traditional Hispanic wedding, during the ceremony the lasso is wrapped around the couple as a sign of them standing before God and their devotion to the blessed mother. “It’s a wonderful tradition,” she says. “It’s very beautiful and very unifying.” The store also has a section of books, from wedding planning pamphlets to Bibles to books on building a healthy marriage. “It’s just a whole host of things,” she says. “It’s just a lot of information for them to help them prepare not just for the wedding day but for the lifetime of marriage.”

ou’ve got the wedding dress. The wedding and reception locations have been booked and the caterer is on board. Now it’s time to think about the honeymoon. You want to find that special place you’ll both remember as the years go by. Can’t get away for a long honeymoon? How about a nice weekend stay at a local bed and breakfast? nations are the Caribbean, Mexico and Hawaii. All-inclusive resorts are popular with newlyweds, the Cotters say. But no matter where you want to go, the agents at Cotter Travel probably have been there. Bob Cotter notes that, with five agents, customers are going to get a combined total of 121 years of experience. And that experience is something you can’t get when planning your honeymoon via the Internet. For example, Chad Cotter is a destination specialist for Hawaii and has first-hand experience of the islands to help you plan a memorable trip. “People care. The Internet doesn’t,” Bob Cotter says. While a picture may be pretty online, the reality may be something different, both Cotters say. And you may not be getting the best deal online. Also, by booking through an agent, you have a real person who can help take care of any problems. “People get down there and something goes wrong, we can intercede for them,” Bob Cotter says. Off into the sunset Ride away in elegant style Many girls dream of a fairy tale wedding, including the ride off into the sunset in a horse-drawn carriage. Even if fairy tales aren’t your thing, Duncan Carriages offers an experience worth remembering. Wayne and DeDe Duncan, owners of Duncan Carriages, started the business in June of 1989 and have been doing weddings, festivals and special occasions since. They offer horse-drawn transportation for about any event and estimate that about 35 percent of their business is from weddings. The variety of vehicles to choose from allows more flexibility in planning an event. Whether you want a small, private carriage ride for you and your sweetheart or transportation for your whole wedding party, they have the ride for you. “We recommend customers reserve their date six months in advance for a special occasion, but we have done weddings on a day’s notice,” Duncan says. “We can put up to five vehicles on the street at once, and more if needed

with enough notice.” Duncan has been driving horses for more than 45 years, and his father and several good friends help with driving. “My two daughters and sonsin-law help when they can with moving of equipment from place to place and loading and unloading carriages,” he says. “You can’t turn just anybody loose with a horse and carriage. It takes a level head and a lot of driving experience.” Several photos on the company’s website feature Tom, one of the main horses used for weddings. “We have used him for weddings and special occasions for the past 19 years,” Duncan says. “He is now 21 and a member of the family. I joke and tell the customers Tom and I have done more weddings than any minister I know, with more than 500 in the past 19 years. We figure we have done over 600 in the past 21 years all together.”

Weddings are becoming more and more personalized, allowing the bride and groom to show off their unique style. The wedding unfolds naturally, and the images give an insider’s look into the couple’s love and connection. “It’s my job to make the day look as if it unfolded smoothly, when in reality it’s always a very hectic and tight schedule,” Barry Robertson of Mypix Photography says. “Bottom line, it’s all about the bride. If she’s happy then everyone is happy, and the rest of the shots you get after that are just gravy.” Some photographers offer a hybrid approach and will capture candid moments as well as traditional poses. Lura Landis of Lura Landis Photography finds herself using this approach most often. “It’s important to capture the spontaneous moments and know how to orchestrate them, too,” she says. “Fusion is really important in wedding photography so I can capture the traditional photos as well as candid moments in order to get exactly what the couple wants.” Some couples long to take a more fashionable approach. With inspiration from high-end magazines, the couple’s fantasies become reality in front of the camera. The goal here is to make the wedding couple look their best. The romance is glamorized so that the everyday couple becomes like wedding celebrities. While this approach requires a photographer with great attention to detail, it also requires artistic talent when editing the images. Half of the photo is made on the camera and the other half through digital image editing.

Another growing trend is having a photo booth at the wedding reception to capture the guests’ emotions. Many couples have fun props that can be used to jazz up the pictures, and the guests love knowing their image will be tied to their friend’s wedding. Typically, the guests get one copy of the picture and the second copy is placed in a photo album for the wedding couple where people can leave a note next to their picture. “Having a photo booth at the wedding gives the bride and groom a personalized guest book and serves as a great party favor. Plus, it’s a happy distraction for guests to interact with each other,” says Alicia Nelson of Mobile Memories. Naturally, it’s up to the bride and groom to decide which style is best suited to them. Make a house a home Julie Bowen, vice president of marketing with Mercantile Bank, says before you say “I do,” there are a few things to keep in mind to assure financial bliss. “One of the first steps you need to take is to be open and honest with each other about your individual finances,” she says. That includes your income, investments, credit history and debt — all of it. It’s also a good idea to review your credit reports, which will become important when it’s time to buy a home, car or insurance. You’ll be relying on joint financing for those kinds of purchases, and Bowen says knowing what is in your credit report ahead of time can help you plan. “Marriage is about sharing your life together, and if you are not willing or able to share your financial history and plans with your future spouse, you may experience serious marital stress down the road,” she says. Some of that stress can come from a couple’s different approaches to handling money. Some people are frugal while others are spendthrifts. some serious challenges. Bowen suggests couples talk about their expectations and how to spend and save so that they can try to come to a common understanding of how to work together going forward. Whether a couple keeps their finances separate or combined — which also needs to be discussed — they need to figure out how they are going to handle the family finances. Bowen says the best way is to create a budget and savings plan. “Decide who will be responsible for physically writing the checks or managing the bills online, monitoring investments and taking care of the taxes,” she says. Then talk about how much can you spend and what types of purchases you can make without first consulting each other. Map out your financial goals and how you’re going to get there. Similar to combining checking accounts and credit cards, newly married couples need to think about combining their insurance needs, but it can be tough to know where to begin. American Family Insurance’s Mike Debenito says the first step is deciding whose insurance company to use or, if they are with the same company, whose agent to go with.
