Somewhere right now, he’s cooking a brisket for 25 people.
Marty Follis definitely had a knack for entertaining. And whether he was smoking a brisket, grilling a prime rib or just entertaining you with a story, he was doing it at the top of his game.
Playing high school football in Davenport, IA at Davenport West High School, he led the team as quarterback.
He went on to attend Bemidji State University, graduating in 1992 with a BS in Industrial Technology.
Quarterback for the Bemidji Beavers, he won the prestigious 1992 Glen Galligan Award. This award is presented to a student-athlete who is academically superior while making a positive contribution. The Galligan Award was initiated in 1948 to honor an outstanding senior football player in the NSIC. After college, Marty married for a short time and had two children, Tyler 30, and Jordyn 28.
He met Lori Skelley-Follis at Lake of the Ozarks, where they both worked designing accessories for model train enthusiasts. Marty led the research and development team; Lori led the graphic design team.
Then together with their daughter Ariana, they relocated to Grand Lake (Grove) Oklahoma in the early 2000s to pursue their own business endeavors.
Marty’s business continued to thrive, as the exclusive salesman for the area’s Real Estate Book, the Grand Lake representative for Wet Steps, and most recently as a mortgage broker for American Financial Network. Marty was well known for his willingness to network and celebrate his partners’ and clients’ victories right along with his own.
Along the way, he served on the Grove City Council, as mayor of Grove, and on the Grove Municipal Services Authority, and was past president of Rotary.
Where you were most likely to see “Marty being Marty” though was:
• Being a good dad – hanging out with Ariana and his dog, chilling out.
• Being a huge fan – watching the Steelers “dominate” on Sundays with a bunch of friends wherever the game was on.
• Being an avid outdoorsman – a sportsman from very young, Marty was always introducing new people to hunting, sharing his enthusiasm and passion for the sport.
• Being an enthusiastic colleague – hosting an open house or a BBQ at a new build around town.
• Being a friend – Need a favor? – he’s your guy. Need a truck? He’s your guy. Need a few bucks? He’s your guy. There never was a better friend or a guy with a bigger heart than Marty.
Born December 1, 1969, Marty died Friday, April 21, 2023.
Marty was preceded in death by his dad, an infant brother, and brother Gary Follis and brother-inlaw, Bryon Guldenpfennig.
He is survived by his mother, Elaine Follis of Davenport, Iowa; sisters, Sherry Goering (Mel) of Highlandville, MO, Jackie Guldenpfennig, Brenda Quinlan (Jim) and brother, Tony Follis (Amy), all of Davenport, Iowa; son, Tyler Follis and daughter, Jordyn Follis, both of Bemidji, MN and his beloved daughter, Ariana Follis of Lane, KS; his previous wife, Lori Skelley-Follis and her daughters, Starr Oseguera (Luis) of Lantana, TX and Teri Becicka of Grove, 6 grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is planned for 11 am Saturday, June 3, 2023 at COS in Grove, Oklahoma.
And in memory of Marty – remember to live life – to its fullest cathy.schaefer@att.net
