Advanced Training Programs

OUR STORY

NPower is a nonprofit rooted in the community and committed to advancing race and gender equity in the tech industry through skills training, real-world experience, support, and mentorships. The organization has helped young adults from underserved communities and veterans move from poverty to the middle class by training them with a range of tech skills and placing them in quality jobs.

Students who enter our free training programs earn industry-recognized certifications and graduate with the competencies of an IT professional with one to two years of experience. NPower also places students in paid internships and apprenticeships with corporate and nonprofit organizations. Eighty percent of NPower graduates get a full-time job or continue their education. NPower is a vital solution towards bridging the national talent gap that exists in the high-growth technology industry.

Over the past decade, NPower has expanded its program reach and developed a robust network of Fortune 500 companies, mid-sized enterprises, government agencies, staffing firms, and a network of nonprofit partners that host its interns and hire its graduates full-time.

Andruw Brown

Before NPower, my passion for technology burned bright, but I was uncertain about how to transform it into a career. NPower has been transformative, shaping my technical, professional, and career development. The AWS Labs and homework assignments showed me firsthand the rewards of skill, hard work, and dedication. My fondest memory was doing the AWS labs; it equipped me with the tools, knowledge, and experience to thrive as a Cloud Engineer.

Thanks to NPower, I now understand that success hinges on character, preparation, aptitude, and confidence. I eagerly anticipate earning additional certifications and pursuing a career in Cloud Engineering. I extend heartfelt gratitude to the NPower team for this opportunity to grow as an individual. NPower has not just ignited my passion but also set my career on an upward trajectory, and for that, I am profoundly grateful.

Curious, Proactive learner with three months of experience in Systems Analysis and certifications in Security+ and CCNA (among others). I found out about NPower from a former shipmate who went through the program and I am currently in training for my first cloud certification. I appreciate programs like Npower that allow learners to work towards a professional certification and gradually get to a place where they can apply for and be hired for a permanent position.

Detailed oriented and mission driven Operations and security professional with over 7 years of experience with patient care for US Army. I managed to see and document an estimated 20-30 people on daily basis. While managing soldiers under me to perform adequate patient care and proper documentation. Along my military career I have received several army achievement awards.

What brought me to NPower was an avenue to explore my passion in cybersecurity. NPower has allowed me to go from having a job in medicine to a career in tech. I now have my sec+ and AWS certification. I am now on the lookout for cloud security analyst, cloud engineer or devsecops roles.

Before NPower, I never envisioned myself working in the tech industry. Coming from an impoverished community, technology felt foreign and inaccessible to me. During the pandemic, where many felt lost, I ended up finding direction through NPower. Their support helped me transition from a job at Target into my first tech role in 2021. Thanks to NPower, I obtained my CompTIA ITF+ Certification, this was my stepping stone into the tech world. Navigating through virtual learning was challenging, but my dedication was stronger. I embraced the opportunity, developing valuable skills for my future. Now, I’m ready to take my next step, I’m once again armed with NPower’s guidance and assistance in obtaining my AWS Cloud Practitioner certification. The pandemic taught me that with determination and support, I’m able to overcome any obstacle. I’m anticipating a promising future in the tech industry, driven by the skills and confidence NPower has instilled in me.

NPower alumni, ITF+ Certified, Google Project Management and Data Analyst Certification. I have a bachelor’s degree in Education and a graduate degree in Information and Library Science. Currently, I an intern at Citi. I assist in running global projects and programs for Citi employees. I have strong skills in MS office and Google Suite as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills. I am tech savvy and enjoy implementing creative solutions to projects and objectives. I enjoy being a leader and a team player, an overcomer and have a strong ability to learn and grow. As I shift to a career in IT, I am hoping to become an AWS cloud professional or a program and project manager.

In 2018, I graduated from Ranken Technical College with a Two-year certificate in Microsoft Windows Server. In 2021, I earned the IT Fundamentals+ certification through NPower and have been working as an IT Help Desk for about 2 years now. I have become confident in my current role and received a few rewards for providing great IT technical support.

I am ready for a new challenge and skill so I decided to apply for the NPower AWS Cloud Practitioner Advance IT training class because I could not pass up a lifetime opportunity to earn another IT certification with NPower. With the AWS Cloud Practitioner certification, I can earn a new skill and software that will help me qualify for more advanced IT roles. With NPower, I have the power to empower my IT career.

Before NPower, I was indecisive about a career. Although I graduated college studying a specialty in software development, I ended up working in a high school and was going to pursue a career in education. However, it didn’t feel right, part of me still wanted a career in tech and then my friend told me about NPower. What drove me to NPower were four key things; classmates looking to pursue similar goals, professors to guide me through the course, career guidance, and it is a program to support the minority community.

NPower has opened a door that I believed to be closed and brought back confidence I believed to be lost, allowing me to confidently pursue a career in technology. If I could have any power, it would be to mimic other superpowers because then I could have any and/or every superpower.

“Before moving to New York, I had a really strong passion for technology. Once I got here I started googling free IT training in New York. That’s where I found NPower. Since then I was able to graduate from the Tech Fundamentals program, intern at CitiBank and obtain a tech certification. I really liked the path that I was taking and decided to enroll in college and I majored in Computer Science and Information Security. I found a job as an IT Assistant where I have been now for a year. This desire to learn more and challenge myself took me back to NPower and to Cloud training. I am so happy to have joined the program where I believe I am given everything to succeed. I want to thank the NPower team for allowing us students to get a better living and open the doors to many opportunities.”

As a young child, growing up through the height of the technological era, it was natural for my passion for tech to flourish. However, prior to NPower, I was unsure of my career and was nowhere near being involved with the tech industry. Months before I heard about the IT programs NPower offered, I earned my A+ certification after paying for an accelerated program that included no job placement assistance. After learning about NPower’s IT Fundamentals program and being accepted into the Fall 2019 class, my life changed forever! I was able to get hands-on experience, create my technical footprint, and most importantly learn how to interview! Being driven and committed, I landed a helpdesk position with an MSP in the city. Here, I currently hold a desktop engineering role after being promoted twice in just my first 4 years in the industry. In addition, I was unanimously awarded the 2021 Most Improved in the company, as well as, chosen to be part of the 2022 Hi-Po (High Potential) internal program. I plan to continue to expand my technical knowledge and now start to break into the cloud portion of this wonderful industry.

I had been out of the IT world for about 5 years and was looking to get back into it. NPower gave me the opportunity and prepared me as well as giving me the confidence to obtain my CompTIA A+ along with the ITF+, Security+, as well as my AWS Cloud Practitioner Certifications.

I will be forever grateful to the NPower team for given me the opportunity to change my life. I look forward obtaining a position where I can continue down this journey that seems to have no boundaries.

Before NPower, I was in a very tight spot mentally and financially. In 2019, I had just moved to Texas with no prior technology skills and/or management skills as well. I have been in the warehouse and food industry my whole career. In 2020 I had my first child and I was praying for an opportunity to put myself in a better position financially for my son’s sake. In 2022, I worked diligently and patiently for an opportunity that would give me more skills, valuable knowledge, and also bring me in a field where I could grow and expand my career, and that’s when it happened. My dad actually was the one who introduced me to the NPower program and since then it has allowed me to break into the tech field and also gain some life long skills along the way that include networking, attaining globally known certificates and also mentoring from veterans in multiple fields as well. The biggest thing I had to do was believe in myself and also have faith in the process. I now look forward to officially breaking into tech again and begin working with a company whose main focus is growth and to become a full time asset to a vigorous team.

Prior to NPower, I attended the University of California, Irvine as a first-gen student, where I graduated with a background in Business Economics and Education. Shortly after graduating, I got an offer at Amazon. It didn’t take long for me to realize that I felt unfulfilled in my role within Amazon. My heart yearned for more and pushed me to search for something that better aligned with my passions. After some soul searching, I found that all my hobbies and personal interests kept pointing me to tech. It was around this time that I found NPower, and thank god I did! NPower has allowed me to fulfill my personal goals and has enabled me to work towards my professional aspirations within tech. I have met some amazing peers and mentors, which in return has provided me with such an enriching experience. I can honestly say that I feel more fulfilled in life overall, and although I am not where I want to be yet, it feels great knowing that I am one step closer to getting there. Before starting NPower, I was working at a law firm as a help desk analyst feeling stagnant with my career. I wanted to go back to school but was financially unable to. I was living on my own and was trying to figure things out. I Learned about NPower from a former last classmate that was enrolled in NPower and attained a job working for Google. I went to their website and seen I met the requirements and quickly applied. I felt like this would be a great opportunity to network and further my career. During my time in NPower, I felt more relieved being a classroom with individuals that wanted to grow in their careers. It challenged me and introduced me with a different perspective. After graduation, I plan to continue networking and slowly transition from help desk to soc analyst.

My time at NPower gave me the tools necessary to succeed in the cloud field. With the cloud field being so broad and constantly innovating, I had no idea what I wanted to do. NPower exposed me to many different career paths and many different opportunities in the field. They equipped me with technical skills and gave me support in and out of class so I can get my certifications and understand the information in the curriculum.

NPower has been a huge boon to my technical and professional career. I have always been interested in technology and participating in NPower has furthered my interest and understanding in the technology space, which is ever growing. NPower helped me to gain more confidence in having those technical conversations with my peers by going through labs expanded our experience. Being able to be a part of those professional development days has had a huge impact with learning more about the current industry trends and gaining an insight into what these cloud professionals see and the advice they have navigating through the space. However, I was looking for another opportunity to gain the knowledge and certification needed to succeed in the tech industry. I’m glad I found NPower. Before joining NPower, my journey in life was stagnant in retail. My enthusiasm for technology is unwavering, yet I lacked clarity on how to transform it into a profession. NPower has created an environment of continuous learning and networking to help me feel more comfortable launching my career in technology. I was able to begin my pivot into tech after seven years in Retail, which provided me with the skills to deliver great customer service; I was able to pivot further after accepting an offer with the NPower – Community Help Desk (CHD). I am delighted to have been onboarded back in February during the rebranding and to have been a part of the first cohort going through the apprenticeship. With that experience, I became part of the blueprint for many standards, policies, and procedures that have since become integral to the CHD organization’s operations. I look forward to obtaining additional certifications and earning multiple incomes. Before NPower, I was a recent college grad from UCLA on track for Optometry school. But after participating in various shadowing and volunteering programs for 2 years, I was unhappy and knew that it was not for me. While working as a Health Educator during the pandemic, I started researching other career paths and became interested in a career in IT. However, I did not want to immediately go back to school or go the self-taught route as I make the career change. Then, I discovered NPower and joined due to free training, guidance, and job placement complete with a support system and a structured learning environment. My time at NPower gave me the technical skills, certificates, and professional development to jump-start my career in IT. With my new skills, I plan to solidify my foundation in Information technology through an IT Specialist role while gaining knowledge and experience to pursue cybersecurity/cloud security in the near future.

Prior to NPower, I had a difficult time focusing on study materials needed to go for the certifications needed to advance my career. Working as a technical support engineer at Dell Technologies for 5 years, I felt like it was time for me to learn some new skills to advance my career. NPower provided the necessary tools, knowledge, and experience to succeed in the IT field and life. Thanks to NPower, I now know that the key to my success has a lot to do with character, preparation, aptitude, and confidence. I look forward to obtaining additional certifications and pursuing a career in cloud. I would like to thank the NPower staff for this wonderful opportunity to better myself as an individual.

My experience with NPower has been instrumental to my technical, personal, and career development. I have always been fascinated by Cyber Security. The time I spent here gave me the opportunity to discover that I want to pursue a career as a Cyber Security Investigator. I was also able to make new friends, earn multiple certifications, gain hands-on experience, and have access to career coaching and social support. These were all completely free. It has been an incredible journey, and I am deeply indebted to everyone who has helped me get here. My career now has a clearer path forward with a sense of excitement. You ever just stumble into something good? Well, that’s my story with NPower. As a recent graduate from college, I was able land a decent entry level role but knew I desired more in the long run. I got invited to a job fair one day and found myself across from a NPower recruiter, and the information she passed was music to my ears. She resolved my assumption of NPower being solely for veterans but rather for vets and civilians who have a passion for learning. From there the rest was history. I applied, prayed, and waited for an acceptance letter that finally came! Through the program I’ve been equipped with resume building, networking strategies, and intricate lab projects that’ve help shape my understanding of the cloud. With this good fortunate, I plan to become AWS Cloud Certified before the end of October and cannot wait for the opportunities that soon await. I’d be remiss not to thank my amazing instructors who selflessly stay past class time to assist me and the coordinators who make this entire program possible.

Information Technology has been my career path since grade school. When it came time to start my career, my success began with NPower. Many of my career-firsts happened because of NPower.

Learning and working at NPower taught me that soft skills and practicality are key. The knowledge is useless unless one can effectively communicate and apply it. The longterm efficacy of major enterprises is rooted in how well knowledge is conveyed and actualised. This is a deciding factor for career success.

Much of my time at NPower focused on these aspects, so that I may become a more well-rounded professional. Communication is especially key at this stage in my career, since I work in customer service. End users have varying levels of technology literacy and awareness. Being able to accurately convey policy, concepts, and best practices to them has a cascade effect in the workplace.

That is what I have learned through my time at NPower.

Before joining NPower in 2021, I served four years active duty in the US Army as an Automated Logistic specialist (92A) before getting injured and medically retired from service. I was also a full-time student majoring in Electrical Engineering. A few months before graduation, my wife was enrolled in NPower, and through NPower she was able to obtain an internship and this encouraged me to explore the program. Through NPower, I was able to start my career in IT with an internship at Citi Bank where I was then converted to a full-time role. I obtained a master’s degree in cyber security and information Assurance last year and I am presently polishing up my skills at NPower in AWS cloud which I intend to explore a career in cloud security in the nearest future.

I am currently working as a federal contractor with the Marine Corps as an Information System Security Officer (ISSO). I have a master’s degree in information assurance from the University of Maryland Global Campus in 2023. I had my first degree in Library and Information Science at University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and I have over 7 years work experience as Information Security Analyst. I have passion for IT and so excited, I found NPower as my best career pathway to build my cybersecurity skills in IT field. I came into the NPower program with little technical skills and left with the knowledge and experience to begin my Cybersecurity career. Thanks to NPower and handson-experience I gained from my 12 weeks AWS cloud practitioner program. I am confident in my ability as a cloud and IT professional. I see my future in Information security as a reasonable extension of my interests and skills. NPower is helping me to acquire knowledge and the genuine-world skills to propel my career in Information Security. I am certified in ISACA CISM, CompTIA Security+ CE, A+, ITF+ with the help of NPower.

The second Twin Tower came crashing down on the TV that was strapped to the tall cart in front of the classroom. It was sophomore year, second period, history class, and everyone stared in shock and disbelief. I remembered then and there that I wanted to enlist to help protect this great nation of mine. Serving 2003 to 2007, I was able to deploy to Japan, Korea, and Iraq. After active duty, I went home and proceeded straight to work as a technician. Oftentimes difficult and gloomy with having been in and out of jobs, I did what I learned best in the Marine Corps: adapt and overcome.

As my life is transitioning from technician to technology, I managed to come paths with NPower. My open-minded nature led me on taking a chance with NPower which is creating a pivotable life-changing experience. The staff at NPower certainly feels more like family than just another cohort. Accomplished so much in such a short amount of time and there will be no number of words I will be able to say to thank each and everyone in the NPower family enough!

I’m an adaptable tech enthusiast with a proven track record in roles ranging from Associate Analyst at Infosys to a Men’s Health Prevention Associate at APICHA Community Health Center. With a passion for problemsolving and a knack for adapting to new technologies, I bring over two years of experience, along with an impressive array of technical skills. Notably, I’ve earned certifications in AWS Cloud Practitioner and CompTIA Security+, further strengthening my foundation in cloud computing and cybersecurity.

Before NPower, I had a diverse background in digital services and consulting, as well as community health. However, I was eager to bridge the gap between my skills and a flourishing career in IT. NPower provided the ideal platform for this transformation. Through the advanced Cloud Computing and Cybersecurity training, I not only gained valuable certifications but also learned to leverage cutting-edge technologies in real-world scenarios. The transition to virtual instruction and internships was seamless, showcasing the adaptability and resilience instilled by NPower. Yee Ling Bolton U.S. Army Veteran Spouse

Prior to NPower, I worked as a continuous improvement leader in the consumer-packaged goods industry. I am seeking to expand my career in the technology field, I discovered NPower, a nonprofit organization that provides free IT job training and career development resources to veterans and their spouses. Intrigued by the program offerings, I attended an ACT NOW orientation and was impressed by the breadth and depth of the resources available, including textbooks, exam vouchers, live classes, and career assistance. Since joining the program, I have gained valuable technical skills and friendships with fellow trainees. I should have joined the program earlier when considering switching my career. I credit NPower for helping me pursue my career goals and I am grateful for the professional and supportive staff and trainers who made my learning experience a success.

I joined the United States Marine Corps. Right after high school. Growing up I always knew I was going to join the military and so I served my country from 2011 to 2015 as a mortarman. After being honorably discharged from the military I went and attended The Ohio State University where I studied Criminology. After graduating from college I decided to start my own business. After running my own business for a few years I knew I wanted to grow even more and came across NPower/IT via a few friends. NPower has been nothing short of great with getting me experience and starting my new career journey in technology. I cannot be more thankful for NPower and all that they have done for me.

From youth to adulthood, I’ve been a man of many hats. My interests range from natural sciences, finances, martial arts, etc. However, I’ve always been a student of the tech industry. While I’ll always be a ‘student’, great minds never stop learning and reflecting, my time at NPower gave me the tools, knowledge, and confidence I need to move ahead. As a trainee, NPower has proved its exceptional reputation. I’ll forever be grateful and fond of my experiences with both the Tech Fundamentals and Cybersecurity courses; from the staff, instructors, and my classmates. I’ve learned so many things, not just about IT via our CompTia or Google training, but via our Professional Development sessions as well. With the tools and knowledge NPower has given me over thus far, I will accelerate my growth and career in the IT and Cybersecurity industries.

Before my NPower journey, I worked for a pharmacy running their Amazon storefront. I was always interested in working in tech, but I didn’t have the resources or the necessary information to make it happen. A friend who had gone through NPower program recommended that I apply, and I was accepted into the LA Tech Fundamentals program. After graduating from the Tech Fundamentals program with a wealth of knowledge and certifications, I decided to apply to the NPower Advanced Cyber program. Cybersecurity is the area I’m most interested in, and I knew that NPower would give me the skills and training I need to succeed in this field. One of the many reasons NPower is so amazing is that every trainee is cared for. With a great support system of instructors, social support, and job placement assistance, there’s always someone there to help you with whatever needs or concerns you have. I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue my tech journey with NPower, and I’m confident that I’ll be successful in advancing my career.

Before Joining NPower, I served in the U.S. Navy for seven years and when it was time to transition out of the military, I knew I wanted to go into the IT field, so I started doing my research. Through the VA transition assistance program, I came across NPower and decided to apply to their Tech Fundamentals program, where I learned various skills to help with my transition into the tech world and get a general understanding of technology.

Upon completing the tech fundamentals program, I applied for their advanced Cybersecurity program to give me more extensive knowledge, and I was accepted. Their Cybersecurity program is highly competitive because it is one of the best out here, and I was so elated to have been accepted. After the program, I hope to apply the knowledge and skills I have gained to my job and be able to assist my team better.

Before starting NPower, I was working for Door Dash struggling to make ends meet while living in a homeless shelter with my mother and younger brother. I wanted to go back to school but was financially unable to. I frantically job searched on Google, LinkedIn, ZipRecruiter, and finally Craigslist. After searching on Craigslist for a few days, I saw an ad for a tech fundamentals program which was free for young adults. I took this as a sign and applied. I got accepted and began my tech journey! NPower helped me make a career move for the better. This program has been a gift from above. I didn’t stop at the tech fundamentals though. After finishing my first program at NPower I had learned that I wanted to embark on a continued journey of higher education which led me to the Cyber Security Advanced Program by NPower. Between the networking, the internship, the mentorship, and even the certification training, this program has been a blessing, and everything was free! The only thing I had to do was “trust the process” (a quote used throughout the program).

Before NPower, I was unemployed, helping out my father in his work while I was looking for an entry job, internship, and apprenticeship in software development or handling data. I found out about NPower after searching every day for numerous openings on apprenticeships and entry jobs and reading about certifications they help you out with. After finding the NPower opening, I applied and was soon accepted into the program. My time at NPower has been more than amazing. The amount of support you can get from your classmates on Discord, the instructor helping you out with any questions you have, making sure you understand the material thoroughly, and the staff is there for you to make sure you accomplish your goal and the networking opportunities you have while in the program. Trusting the process is the biggest thing to keep in mind, and its what has helped me to keep persevering. After graduating from the Cybersecurity program, I plan to get a role in Ethical Hacking or Web Admin.

Before Power, I was constantly job searching with no success. While I had always wanted to pursue a technology career, I was worried about putting my family in debt through pursuing traditional education. I wanted to have a big change in my future career. One of my best friends showed me that he was doing this IT program and told me about NPower and how great the program is.

He was telling me how great the tech courses are, especially with great teachers like Anthony and Dixon, in addition to Connie and Ricky, showing everyone that they really care about everyone’s well-being and career path. Even though, at times, there was a struggle to balance through everything. I pushed my way through. I have multiple certifications in the job fields I want to pursue, and I look back now and think I am grateful I did this program. A friend of mine who also graduated from NPower told me about their tech fundamental program during my junior year of college and I was very intrigued, especially since I was just informed about how important certifications were in the field of tech. Shortly after speaking with my friend, I applied to the program, and I have been coming back ever since to help further my career. Before NPower I was a retail associate at Macy’s Inc. What brought me to NPower was an email I received from the Veteran’s Administration.

My time at NPower gave me the opportunity to return to studying computer technology and obtain an ITF+ and a Google IT support certification. It opened the door for me to explore a career in cybersecurity. After graduation, I plan to seek apprenticeships and/or internships in cybersecurity. In addition, I will continue to apply for computer information instructor positions. I have a background in teaching computer technology to adult learners at a community college.

I have completed a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies and an MS in Information Management Technology. In the distant past, I served in the U.S. Air Force for five years as an administrative specialist.

Before joining the military, I was working a few odd jobs around and was scouted by a Recruiter. I joined when I was 22, going on 23, and served for five years under MOS Air Traffic Control from 2007 to 2012. After my time in the military, I didn’t want to continue in Air Traffic Control due to stress, but could only get some warehouse working jobs and sales retail jobs. I also struggled with jobs, mainly starting late 2019 to 2021, while Covid was becoming more widespread and out of a job in 2022. While going through SF Goodwill Veteran Coordinator, I learned of NPower, and graduated from the ITF course earlier this year, 2023. The staff and the program were very illuminating as I hadn’t worked with computer technologies before. I am now currently using NPower for the National Cybersecurity program to broaden my knowledge further.

I am a Ph.D. student studying the psychology of violence, emphasizing on criminal behavior, and a cybersecurity student with NPower—a lifelong learner. As a child, the Rocky films and superhero movies were my favorite, and I always wanted to do something distinct, to serve, so I joined the Marines. After my time in the military ended due to a few injuries, adjusting was challenging; I could no longer go to work because the work had to be missiondriven like the other Marines in my unit, all serving to make this country safe or communities safe: leadership, community, mission, and service matters.

During my time in the reserve unit, a fellow Marine introduced me to NPower. My interest in cybersecurity was sparked even more after taking a computer crime class in grad school. I saw NPower as an opportunity to build upon my knowledge and interest in artificial intelligence. After completing my Master’s in Criminal Justice, I promised myself to join the community of cybersecurity experts at NPower. I am grateful for the staff, expert instructors, and fellow students who have guided me in learning the intricacies of cybersecurity and how to protect against cyber threats. I joined the US Army right after a year in college. At 26, I decided to change careers in the midst of a successful military and tried to navigate the rough waters into the doors of IT. Initially I had my doubts about entering the IT space due to being unfamiliar with civilian employers at the time, so I decided to reach out to an organization called NPower for help and for their expertise in the IT space. Before my time in the military officially ended, I graduated NPower’s IT fundamentals course with my certification in CompTIA+ and NPower’s Social Support Manager Mindy reached out to her connections to get an interview that landed me my first IT job. At first, I had my doubts about it because how can a program like NPower be completely free? I never had an interest in computers or technology, but I saw it as a learning experience and as something that I can build upon. Ever since I started the program, I have never regretted it. The staff at NPower are dedicated to your success and come across as family as they helped me learn a lot about computers in a short amount of time. I am thankful that I came across NPower as they helped me get started in my career.

I have a degree in International Relations and Religion and was considering a career as a lawyer. After taking a few legal classes before I graduated college in 2018, I realized I no longer had a passion for that direction. I have spent the last few years working in threat management but decided that I wanted to follow a different path after speaking with employees who already worked in Cybersecurity. I found NPower through an online search of how I can get a start in the field and was able to get my CompTIA A+, Google IT Support and Project Management certifications through the Technical Fundamentals program. I am currently a Security Command Center Operator through a contract with BlackRock and hope that I can use the skills from the Cybersecurity program to transit to a career as a Cybersecurity Analyst or Engineer!

My desire to venture into the tech industry led me to NPower. Although I knew I wanted to pursue a career in tech, I had no specific idea of how to begin. Through NPower’s IT fundamentals program, I was introduced to various tech careers and provided hands-on lab experiences to prepare me for real-life work scenarios. I joined the Army as a Private First Class after college. I spent the next thirty years in the military in various capacities including Active Duty, Reserves, and National Guard. I have had several deployments overseas and retired in 2017 with the rank of Colonel. Concurrently, I was also a high school teacher for twenty-seven years teaching social studies and technology at the middle and high school level.

As a technology teacher, I was introduced to many aspects of the IT world and learned many relevant skills. After my teaching career, I decided to pursue cybersecurity. I had some experience in the military and in my teaching career but did not have the credentials or experience needed to land my first job. I found out that I was eligible to take classes with NPower and am now taking the S+ class to get my needed credentials and start my new career path.

I initially went to school for a biology degree and switched to a Computer Science degree (obtaining Dec 2023). I have entry level experience in software engineering and have learned the basics of computer science/software engineering in my bachelor’s program as well as having two internships and an apprenticeship. I found NPower through a Cybersecurity group on Facebook, and I am so glad I pursued the opportunity to work with the company. At the age of 5 years old my family arrived in the United States for a better and save environment. After completing high school, I decided to take the burden off my parents financially since college was not an option.

I joined the U.S. Army as an Infantryman, proudly serving 23 years and retired honorably. After the military one of the biggest challenges was adapting to a new culture and language. While many of the skills and experiences gained in the military are highly transferable, it can be difficult to explain their relevance and value to hiring managers and job opportunities. I quickly discovered to transition into corporate America successfully I would need to align myself into a desired career.

I personally expressed to my wife my desire and interest in the cyber security/IT field. My wife discovered and heard about NPower. We did some research and she signed me up. I came into the program with no knowledge of computers and can say today that I am grateful to be given the opportunity. I went straight into the Army out of high school at the age of 18 back in 2009. I joined the Military because of my father, my uncle and my grandfather. I wanted to serve and be just like them. Mainly because they showed me how to be a man and I look up to all of them. Before NPower I was literally working dead end jobs after I exited from the Military. I have always had a fascination with tech, and I love the idea of remote and or hybrid work. My mother brought me here through contact and I have been doing my best to be successful in every sense. After graduating from college with a degree in Civil Engineering I joined the Navy, I had many collateral duties but my primary job was Diver. I discovered NPower from a good friend, while I was working in a car rental company. I was very comfortable with the position however I didn’t see it as a position that I was happy calling my career. I started with NPower five years ago, and since then I have achieved in getting my Comptia A+ Certification, AWS Cloud and Solution Architect certifications. Prior to my enrollment in the NPower program, I had the privilege of working at a prominent Fortune 500 IT Consulting enterprise known as Infosys. My tenure at Infosys spanned approximately four years, during which time I acquired a diverse range of IT competencies, encompassing full-stack development and attaining certification as a Scrum Master.

My introduction to NPower was facilitated through a recommendation by my colleague, Ian Icaza, who is a distinguished alumnus of the program and presently employed by JP Morgan. The impetus behind my decision to join NPower stemmed from my desire to embark on a new professional journey, one centered within the realm of Cybersecurity. NPower has presented an opportunity for me to excel past my current role and hone in on my specilization in Cyber security. The security+ certificate will be my first step in a new direction. Prior to joining NPower. I was working in the Financial Services industry. I was drawn to the IT field after the pandemic when I realized the increasing demand for tech professionals.

My NPower experience was exceptional! I was able to build my network both in NPower and externally. The number of relationships that I have created through this experience has been amazing. NPower presented me with the skills and knowledge that I needed to not only learn the foundations of IT and Cybersecurity, but to also pass my CompTIA A+ certification, as well as currently working on pursuing my CompTIA Security+. For my next steps, I hope to acquire a full-time opportunity in an organization that benefits my career growth plans. In the future, I hope to explore the field of Information Security and begin my journey to become a security engineer for a major organization. My journey through life has been one filled with diverse experiences and unwavering dedication. I embarked on my educational path at the University of Mississippi, where I earned my first bachelor’s degree. Following that, I embarked on a remarkable journey of service, dedicating seven years of my life to the Air Force. Upon my honorable discharge, I continued my pursuit of knowledge, obtaining my master’s degree from Webster University. With a passion for education, I ventured into the realm of teaching, where I imparted knowledge and inspiration to students in grades five through eight, specializing in Math, Science, and English. My career then took a technological turn, as I transitioned into the role of an Information Systems Technologist with the Missouri Department of Transportation. Later, after relocating to Texas, I continued to excel in the field, serving as an Information Systems Technologist for Henry Schein. My life’s journey has been a testament to my unwavering commitment to learning and my dedication to making a meaningful impact in various professional roles.

Robert Anjorin

Before starting NPower I was a recent college graduate with an Associate in Cyber Forensics and was looking to get into an entry level position. I had no ways of getting myself around and, I had no idea of certain things about the industry. Leaving for a Marketing and Finance Industry to the Cyber industry has been a great change to me and with all difficulties NPower helped me to see the right path. NPower is my second apprenticeship and It provided me with the in depth knowledge and also a way to help me grow. I love the 1:1 coaching and the style of teaching. I am glad I had to join this program and it has made a great impact in my career goals.

Robert Garcia

U.S. Marine Corps Veteran

I served four years in the Marine Corps as a Radio Operator right out of high school. After leaving the Marines I pursued a career in Telcom which I spent 6 years learning the industry. I was born and raised in Silicon Valley where the technology jobs were competitive and the housing market booming. So, I moved to Northern California to grow my experience in Tech support for an underserved Native American Tribe. After 7 years serving the Tribe, I felt the need to grow even further in my tech career so I moved back to the Bay Area, San Jose, to pursue that knowledge and found NPower to help with that transition. Not only did NPower help me connect with local tech companies they gave me the chance to work and learn side by side with my fellow veterans. This gave me a great sense of pride and I felt the great comradery amongst fellow Vets. After being placed in an internship at Splunk, my career took off like a rocket and landed jobs with the Golden State Warriors and currently with Comcast as a Sales Engineer.

I joined the US Army right before I graduated from the University of Texas A&M, Commerce TX in Computer Science. I always wanted to do something different so I chose to join the military which would help me to set up for the future since I was unaware what the future holds after graduation. I was on the reserve side and started working as a technical engineer in Amry while worked as a Software developer before I was deployed. Once I got back to the states, I was not sure what to do. One of my friends suggested me to join NPower and go for cybersecurity as there is a broad scope for this in upcoming years. I have a great time here in NPower. Shannon Davis

Upon completing college for acting on film and television I dreamed of various ideas I can use that allows me to be passionate while simultaneously successful in all my endeavors.I turned all my passions and aspirations into a clear career path I could pursue for the rest of my life. I blindly jumped into a completely different career path than I anticipated and trusted the process. I am beyond grateful that I was granted the opportunity to join NPower’s IT Fundamentals Program. After graduating from from the IT fundamentals program I was then accepted into NPower’s advanced Cyber Security Program. Prior to joining, I dedicated 8 years to the customer service Industry, where I gained troubleshooting skills as well as communication and interpersonal skills. I went on to spend 4 years working for one of the leading companies in the tech industry, Apple. There I would spend 2 years as a product specialist. I then went under a deep training allowing me to switch to the Apple care department were I would gain my start in IT. I gained knowledge, experience and a true passion for IT. My current goal is to take my skill set and land a full time job as a Cyber security analyst and a Tech sales analyst working for Google.

Soleil Liburd Spencer Moy

Prior to NPower, I was an after-school teacher. I was on my way to becoming a dance specialist. I lost two family members during this time, making me realize that life is short. I loved working with the kids but I wanted something more for me. Technology has been a big part of my life considering my nickname in my house was the electronic killer. So I figured I should step into a a career in it. That’s when I discovered the amazing opportunity of NPower from a friend. I ended up applying and the rest is history. As a graduate, I hope to use my new technical skills as well as my soft skills to be a great addition to any team. Thank you, NPower for giving me this chance to grow.

As a UX designer with over 15 years of experience, I have decided to pivot into cybersecurity. I believe that my skills as a UX designer, such as attention to detail, problem-solving, and critical thinking, are transferable to the field of cybersecurity. Additionally, my experience in communicating effectively with stakeholders, including clients, designers, and developers, has prepared me to write clear and concise technical documentation. I have also written technical documents such as heuristic evaluations, functional specs, and annotations such as user flows, design decisions, and functionality. NPower has been amazing in training me to be a Cybersecurity professional. I’m very grateful for NPower to provide me with the education and professional development. I am confident that my passion for UX can be applied to improve the user experience of cybersecurity products and services.

As a recent immigrant to the United States, resuming my professional career presented significant challenges. Despite my background in technology, adapting to a new environment was demanding. TRANSFORMING LIVES

NPower’s model is a solution to building a diverse tech pipeline. Our graduates launch tech jobs with an average starting salary of $41,000–$60,000 and are positioned to advance their career path, enabling them to earn more than their peers in lower-wage jobs. Higher earning potential is the key to breaking generational cycles of poverty, positioning our students and their families to achieve long-term economic success.

We are the FUTURE OF WORK

Through partner and tech industry collaboration, our free training model is a workforce development solution for the future. In today’s economy, over 50% of all jobs require some degree of technology and digital skills. We prepare untapped, diverse talent to fill the number of technology-oriented jobs that will increase in the U.S. to 13 million by 2025, according to a recent Microsoft Data Science report that estimates that digital job capacity. Our graduates of over 8,000 veterans and young adults are hired at over 3,000 companies and nonprofits as interns and full-time employees. NPower is on a mission to create pathways to economic prosperity by launching digital careers for young adults and military veterans from underserved communities. Part of this goal is supported by our Command Shift Coalition, a national consortium of women and allies that advocate for strategies that invest in and inspire the advancement of young women of color in tech careers and aims to increase the representation of women of color in tech from 5% to 10% over the next 10 years. This coalition was sparked by ‘40 by 22’, a NPower initiative to help young women of color access the skills needed to launch careers in the tech industry in partnership with Citi Foundation’s Pathways to Progress initiative.
