NPOWER MARYLAND
A NOTE OF REFLECTION While this has been an unprecedented time with a health pandemic that has touched every one of our lives in some way and the heightened focus around racial injustice, our Spring 2020 Graduates have remained determined and focused to build the skills and obtain the certifications needed to excel in tech careers. I speak for our entire team, that we have been inspired by their commitment to excellence and grace and the trust they put in NPower for support in building successful careers. They have been resilient, encouraged one another and adapted in creative and innovative ways. And while times are challenging at this moment, we at NPower, are hopeful for the road ahead. One of the important lessons we learned during this pandemic is how vital a role technology plays in keeping us connected—to learn, to work and to communicate. Technology has enabled millions of people to work from home and learn from home in a matter of weeks. And this proves how critical tech jobs are in every company and every community and will be in the future.
A special thank you to the partners who have hired our students and hosted virtual internships. To our Spring 2020 graduates, we know a bright future awaits you and you have made us proud. Congratulations! Onward and forward!
With gratitude,
Kendra Parlock Executive Director, NPower Maryland

Before Tech Fundamentals, I was going from job to job with no real career plan. Eventually I decided that I wanted to take my passion, which is working on computers, and to turn it into a career. This led me to NPower. During my time with NPower I gained in-depth knowledge about computers in a very structured manner that is not easily accessible when trying to be self-taught. My plans after NPower are to further expand my technical skillset and pursue a career in software development. TECH FUNDAMENTALS | SPRING 2020

I’m aspiring to be an IT specialist, more specifically, a cybersecurity specialist. A quote that I live by is: “Everyone has the same 24 hours; how you utilize your time is your choice.” NPower has been a great starting opportunity. Being a part of this training has given me knowledge of the IT field. I have learned to step out of my comfort zone and go after my goals. I aspire to be a software engineer for Under Armour. NPower has given me the confidence to reach that goal.
Before NPower, I was working for my father doing plumbing while applying for various jobs. A friend recommended that I look into NPower. I saw it was a great opportunity to get my foot in the door of the IT industry. Through NPower, I realized how abysmal I was at networking. NPower instilled in me the ability to meet various people within my classroom and the IT industry while expanding my networking sphere. I loved the staff at NPower—they were just amazing at aiding me as a growing professional. After graduation, I plan to pursue a career in cybersecurity.
Before NPower, I was feeling trapped in jobs I hated and was very unhappy. I knew I had to change my career path, but I didn't know what to do. A mentor gave me an NPower flyer, and I was intrigued. I applied and was accepted. I was nervous in the beginning, but it's the best decision I've ever made. NPower gave me the strength and confidence to set new goals for my professional and personal life. I've made connections, and I have grown to love my classmates as my second family. After graduation, I plan to further my education to achieve more certifications and gain more experience in the IT field.

“Big dreams by no means.” This sums up my life before NPower. I was stuck between a rock and a hard place, working a deadend job and spending the little money I had trying to fulfill my dreams. I was desperately searching for a new career, but traditional schooling was out of the question due to finances. Then a friend told me how a tech program gave him the skills he needed to get on his feet and start working as a help-desk technician. It sounded too good to be true, but in desperation I reached out. Not only was I accepted into the program, I was also shown so much love and support! I will always be thankful. Now I can proudly say that I am CompTIA certified; I have also formulated clear steps to making my dreams into reality. I feel optimistic about my future, knowing where I am going.

Prior to the Tech Fundamentals program, I was looking for a way to get my foot in the door of the IT industry. I was looking for jobs on Indeed when I came across NPower. I had already gotten a certification through self-study, but I feel like NPower prepared me for my actual career. The staff is excellent; instead of just giving me technical knowledge, they helped me get a handle on career management. Now, I feel like I can go into an interview or meeting with confidence, using the technical and professional skills I have obtained. After I complete the program, I plan to work full-time and also increase my knowledge and obtain more certifications.
Before NPower, I was working for a phone company. Going into my second year, I was no longer content with this career path. I shared my interest in cybersecurity with my family, but I didn’t know where to start. My aunt discovered NPower and shared it with me. After reading NPower's mission statement on the website, I was amazed. Balancing a full-time job and work as a freelance designer while attending NPower was challenging, but I was determined to excel. Being in an environment of young adults trying to build their foundations was motivation enough to fight through all obstacles. I learned about time management and prioritizing what is important. I met great mentors at the NPower 40 by 22 Women Empowerment event. I was drawn not only to the security field, but also to networking and software. I will grow in the technology field and as an active alumnus. I will also further my education by going back to college.
Before the Tech Fundamentals program, I was thinking about what I wanted to do with my life. I knew that I didn’t want to work in a warehouse anymore. I needed a career change. One day, I was looking online for IT development programs that could help me enhance my skills, and I came across NPower. As an NPower student, I realized how beneficial this program is; it has helped me change my view of interviews. I also saw the importance of IT certification tests. I learned that this was something that I really wanted to do; I have the power to make a change! After graduation, I look forward to getting into a help-desk role at a company and learning cybersecurity.

Before Tech Fundamentals, I was job hopping and taking classes. I heard about NPower from Indeed; what caught my interest was the opportunity for a free education, experience, and certifications. What I enjoy most are the connections with staff and other trainees. They accepted me with open arms; as a result, I could be myself and thrive. The biggest challenge was gaining self-confidence in interviews. I had a mindset that I was not good enough, but the professional development team gave me a plan of action to combat this. Now I can walk into any interview with my head held high! After graduation I will continue my career—either in security or databases, which are the two paths I am most passionate about. I plan to return to school to get my master’s degree because learning never stops for an IT professional.

Before NPower, I was attending college at Towson University studying for a B.S. in IT. I did selfstudy and tried to learn different areas of the field; I even managed to obtain a Cisco certification. However, it was always difficult to secure an interview or position because I didn’t have the necessary experience or degree. The fact that NPower didn’t require any experience or education seemed like the perfect opportunity. People came with various ranges of experience. I sensed the eagerness in the atmosphere; everyone was ready to learn. This class was a perfect refresher. It was hard to stay focused, but I managed to work with it while dealing with a full-time school schedule and self-study for additional certifications. I’m very grateful for the opportunity NPower gave me to obtain tech certifications and build the foundation for a help-desk job. I see myself one day becoming a network engineer.
Before NPower, I was stuck working dead-end jobs. I wanted to go to college, but I was unsure of a major. I had a passion for working on computers, but I didn’t have the technical experience necessary. I knew that I couldn’t get a technical position, so I put that part of my life on pause. NPower has given me the best training, leading me to get the necessary certifications to go further in my dream career. NPower made sure that my needs were tended to; they are more than a helping hand. After graduating, I plan to stay financially independent and obtain a government job. I hope to start my own business one day.

Before NPower, I graduated from high school knowing that I wanted to pursue a career in technology. However, I was uncertain about the path. I started working at a major hardware retailer to make ends meet; my job required me to use a computer system to track and maintain customer orders. I noticed that the company was hiring fewer human employees, instead investing in self-checkouts and online ordering. I realized that being able to fix a computer system would guarantee better employment. I found NPower while looking for IT internships and was astonished by the amount of resources they’ve made available! I plan to complete the program and pursue more certifications.
Before NPower, I was a mechanic technician, working long hours with plans to become a certified mechanic when a tragedy happened. I had no idea where life would take me, so I prayed and talked to a relative. I learned about NPower through contacts of my brother, and I interviewed and got accepted. This program has changed my life tremendously. I was awed by the support I have received. I truly believe that I can achieve anything I put my mind and heart to. Thanks to NPower, I know what I want to do: pursue cybersecurity. Once I graduate, I look forward to enhancing my skills and one day becoming a cyberforensics analyst.
Before joining NPower I was working long hours in retail; I knew I didn’t want to do that forever. I was given information about NPower, and I immediately had an interest because tech was something that I was already interested in doing. I had little knowledge about technology, and I’ve gained so much! I did get a little discouraged, but I got through it with the help of NPower. Everyone is supportive and always there when you need them. After graduation, I plan to continue with an internship and start my new career in the IT field.

After graduating, I hope to finish my degree and use my new skills to pursue my aspiration to help and positively affect the lives of others in the IT field.
Prior to joining NPower, I faced much adversity, including unemployment and the death of my mother. Things began to look up when I received my real estate license and got accepted into NPower. My journey with NPower has been amazing and life-changing. In a short time, I learned so much about the IT field and what to expect in the workplace. The staff is amazing! Everyone has something to teach you that you will definitely benefit from in the real world— from technical instruction, to professional, personal, and leadership development. NPower has been a boost; it has taught me to stand up for my beliefs, and not only reach for what I want but also go out and achieve it. Prior to NPower, I was working a dead-end job that I didn’t enjoy. I wanted to get into IT. I had taken classes but had no hands-on experience or any type of network or support group. At NPower I was able to practice my craft and zero in on the necessary skills for success in IT. The staff at NPower feels like a family; they truly care about everyone’s well-being. The NPower process is tried and true, and it opens many doors for students. I am beyond grateful for all that NPower has done for me. My plans include earning a Security+ as well as a Linux+ certification and getting involved in cybersecurity. I also plan on going back to school to earn a B.S. in cybersecurity.
Before Tech Fundamentals, I was and still am a UPS supervisor. I was tired of working in a warehouse. I learned about NPower while searching on Indeed for new opportunities. During my time at NPower, I loved the hands-on training, which suited my learning style. After graduating from Tech Fundamentals, I will sharpen my skills and get more certifications to become an IT support technician. I also plan to return to school.
Before NPower, I was unemployed and job searching with little direction. I just knew I didn’t want to go back to what I was doing before. I had always been engaged in IT-related activities, such as making music, doing graphic design, and playing video games. My cousin, an alumnus of NPower, recommended it to me. My time at NPower gave me a better understanding and more knowledge of the IT field. NPower also helped me become more professional. After graduation, I plan to continue my journey in the IT industry. I love technology and how fast it grows. I definitely want to be a part of that growth!

Before NPower, I was taking IT and networking classes but had no career plan. Ever since high school, I’ve loved learning about technology. After joining NPower, I was surprised at the amount of support I received. I learned that if I put my mind to it, I can achieve anything I want! I look forward to advancing my skills as a desktop analyst and hope one day to become a network administrator or CEO of my own company.

Before NPower, I was taking classes to get a degree in IT support. I achieved this goal, but I felt that it wasn't enough, and that I lacked experience. I needed a place to hone my technical skills and gain more experience. I thought NPower might be the place to achieve these things. During my time at NPower, I was able to gain the experience and training I sought. The lectures and hands-on projects helped me become more confident in my technical skills; professional development helped me become more confident as a person. After graduation, I plan to find a job in IT, further my knowledge, and keep sharpening my technical skills.

Until finding NPower, I never thought I could get an IT education. Having worked hard labor during most of my teen and adult years, I thought it was the best path. From the first day of training, my time with the staff and my classmates has been fulfilling. I have broadened my network and enhanced my potential as a professional in just weeks. Overcoming various challenges, leading team exercises, and being a team player taught me about myself. I've also made some great friends, and I'm excited to finish this training with them. I plan to rack up a handful of other certifications and pursue a career in database management.

Before NPower I was working long hours at Walmart, wondering how I was going to get experience in the career field I wanted to pursue. One day, my girlfriend suggested that I try applying to internships on Indeed.com, and see where that would take me. I’ve always loved technology, so I decided to apply to NPower. To my surprise, I was accepted! During my time at NPower, I was shocked at how much I didn’t know. With all the support I received, I realized that I can achieve anything I put my mind to! I worked full-time, 40 hours a week, and took classes online to further my education. After graduation, I plan to secure a fulltime career in technology and enhance my skills in cybersecurity. Ultimately, I would like to become a penetration tester for systems and networks.

Before enrolling in the Tech Fundamentals program, I was an intern at Johns Hopkins and going to school at Baltimore City Community College studying cybersecurity. I heard about NPower from the Yo Baltimore program; I took a chance and applied. I have learned so much during my time at NPower; it has enhanced my college education, which has been a big help. After graduation, I look forward to increasing my knowledge in the IT and cybersecurity fields. I hope to be hired at my internship for an IT help-desk position.
Prior to NPower, I had graduated from high school and was working at Amazon. I never knew what career path to take until a friend who attended Tech Fundamentals brought it to my attention. I had always considered going into the IT field. After doing some research and trying to make it work with my home life, I felt that this program was a good choice since I didn't want to go to a university. What I like about Tech Fundamentals is the hands-on training and the small class size. I've learned a lot about myself. For example, I learned that my least favorite thing to do is talk in front of a group (don’t worry, I'm getting better). I'm talking more and becoming more social. I've faced a few challenges related to my study habits, socializing, and being a new mom. After graduation, I hope to land a job in IT and provide for my family and continue to enhance my skills.

Before enrolling at NPower, I was working two jobs and studying for a network technology degree at a community college. I noticed that while working both jobs, I was struggling, and it was beginning to affect my education. While searching on Indeed.com for new opportunities, I found NPower. I read what the program had to offer, and it sounded like the perfect opportunity to get into the field of IT. I originally came to NPower with the mindset that it was just an IT internship. However, I will be leaving NPower with much more— valuable knowledge and skills that will benefit me for the rest of my life. NPower taught me more than just technical skills. I’ve learned how to become a successful professional. I truly appreciate the hard work from the staff in believing in every student. After graduation, I plan on graduating from college with a degree in network technology, while obtaining more certifications and continuing on my path to be a network engineer.
