STUDENT SPEAKER Nedra Bell “I found out about NPower on a Cybersecurity for Women Facebook group as I was seeking change and growth. My career history is based in event and private airline management. Therefore, my previous experiences have sharpened my ability to thrive in high-pressure environments and deliver results. I have had such a positive training experience with NPower. The supportive, educational environment is unmatched. As a career changer, NPower is allowing me to boost my selfconfidence, technical skills and it has given me the feeling of being proud of myself again. This came after gaining my Google IT Support Professional certificate, CompTIA ITF+ certification and soon, CompTIA A+. I am so thankful for NPower and the unlimited possibilities that come with active participation and completion. The exposure to companies such as LinkedIn, Citi Bank, mock interviews, networking sessions and instructor led trainings are opportunities given in Master degree programs. NPower is a trendsetter and is helping me make the positive changes I have been seeking for the past few years. My goal is to enter the IT field as a Cybersecurity Analyst, Technical Sales Representative or Project Coordinator/Manager. I also would like to return and volunteer with NPower in whatever capacity needed. My current opportunities are endless due to the lasting impact NPower has made in my life. Thank you!”

Courtnie Malone Patterson U.S. Navy - Served 10 1/2 years

I served in the US Navy from the time I graduated college in 2012 until February of 2023. While serving, I discovered my passion for technology and decided to make this my career path. I wasn’t quite sure how I would break into the technology field until I was introduced to the Npower program at a Veteran’s job fair. Npower was the answer to my prayers. The Information Technology Fundamentals course has been enlightening, uplifting, challenging, and rewarding. Interacting with the Npower staff has played an integral role in both my and my peers’ success. I am looking forward to applying the skills that I have gained through this program toward further education and landing my dream job. There is no doubt that Npower has equipped me with the tools and resources necessary to take the technology industry by storm, and at this point, the sky isn’t even the limit.

Denvile Michel Dorvis Thinking back, I’ve always wanted to have some sort of part in the Information Technology world, but I was never sure about what position I wanted to hold. I’ve dreamt of taking computers apart and putting them back together, along with understanding the “bits and Bytes” of a network. All this was fueled mainly by friends and family combined with my general curiosity towards IT. I was referred to NPower by my career advisor at Workforce Solutions, and I couldn’t be more appreciative. NPower has provided me with an opportunity to further myself in ways that I never had access to before the cohort. If I had to select a single favorite moment, it would be difficult to do, but I believe that the best moments are completing the courses and getting your certifications above it shows that your work wasn’t in vain. I hope to further myself with these certifications, either by pursuing a specific career or heading back to college to expand my knowledge of the worldwide network further. In a perfect world, I see myself providing another source of internet for my home country and giving back in any other way possible. If I could have one superpower, it would be superintelligence. It speaks for itself, but knowledge is the key to power, and having such intelligence would be a wonderful asset. If I could say something to my younger self, it would be to “Please select IT-related subjects in school” (I didn’t) and “Keep pushing forward no matter how hard things may seem it’s only temporary.”

My friend introduced me to NPower, and I am forever grateful. The community has built my confidence and unlocked so much potential I didn’t know I had. Not only have I made amazing friends and connections, but I have also gained some certificates. I am working on gaining some more before the program is over. NPower has equipped me with all the tools I need to succeed in any field of information technology. As we near the end of the program, I am very excited and optimistic about my future in IT.

One day, my older brother told me about this program called NPower, and I knew this was exactly what I was looking for. An opportunity for me to dip my foot into the tech world. So far, NPower has been the greatest opportunity presented to me. In a world I know very little about, NPower has been the guide that I needed to show me the way, and I thank NPower for that.

NPower has opened my eyes to see the future I’ve always wanted finally. The Professional Development/ Mentorship Programs were the closest I’ve ever been in communication with a real IT Professional. I heard about NPower from the local news, like a lot of people. I didn’t find this grandiose passion-fueled drive towards the IT field. What I had instead was a feeling of comfort and of confidence. This is something I can do and something I can be really good at. This is what NPower instilled in me. Now, and I presume after graduation, my quality of life hasn’t changed. Therefore, I had to join my dad and work with him in construction, but I still had the thoughts lingering in my mind saying, “choose your own path and do what you want to do,” then, out of nowhere, one of my dad’s clients told me about NPower. When she told me about it at that moment, I was already doing my research in tech and computers because I wanted to build a PC but didn’t know how to. I did research as a hobby, figuring out how a computer works, and I had fun doing it. Something in my mind said, “don’t let this opportunity pass you by. Look into it,” so I did, and as soon it said “free” plus “tech,” I applied and knew this was just the program for me. This program has been truly amazing, and I feel blessed to be in this position. so exploring my options, my aunt introduced me to the NPower program which intrigued me. After reading about NPower, I thought it would be a great opportunity with diversity and my passion for tech, and I followed up with my interview process and was accepted into a 2nd home. NPower means “change for the better” and opens many doors for people during and after the program. I think my favorite moments are our Kahoot or quiz sessions we have sometimes. I’ve learned better communication and things about IT that I’ve never even thought about. Professional Development has helped tremendously with talking to hiring managers and filling out applications in the most effective way. After graduation, I’m hoping to continue expanding my knowledge of IT, and even taking it into a Criminal Justice setting or the Army. Now, if I could have any superpower in the world, I would choose mind reading or even invisibility, so I always know what people are thinking. Still, invisibility would be cool because I could be everywhere without anyone knowing. I would tell my younger self that we got this no matter what obstacles we have to overcome to get where we are right now.

His transition to a tech career was a natural progression driven by his innate talent for technology. He became the trusted ‘go-to guy’ in his family for all things related to computer devices. Joining NPower was a pivotal decision for Stanley, inspired by a local news feature. It’s a life-changing experience filled with challenges and unwavering support from instructors and staff. Before joining NPower, I was working for years as a delivery driver with no opportunity for career growth. I had wanted to break into a career in IT for years, but the cost of certification exams and a lack of self-confidence dissuaded me from trying to pursue this goal. After being told about the NPower program by an uncle, I immediately applied, as this program seemed like a dream come true with what it promised me. I can’t begin to express how excited I was when I got the call letting me know I was officially accepted, as I knew this would be a huge first step towards starting my career journey. Not only has NPower helped me to earn three separate IT certifications, but I also have a lot more confidence about the interview process and clearer professional goals for myself. Going forward, I plan to continue earning relevant certifications such as the CompTIA Network+ and Security+, and to pursue a career in Cybersecurity. If I’ve learned anything through this program that I’d want to tell my younger self, it would be to trust the process and put in the work, even when things become difficult, because the end result is more than worth it.

FUTURE OF WORK Through partner and tech industry collaboration, our free training model is a workforce development solution for the future. In today’s economy, over 50% of all jobs require some degree of technology and digital skills. We prepare untapped, diverse talent to fill the number of technology-oriented jobs that will increase in the U.S. to 13 million by 2025, according to a recent Microsoft Data Science report that estimates that digital job capacity. Our graduates of over 8,000 veterans and young adults are hired at over 3,000 companies and nonprofits as interns and full-time employees. NPower is on a mission to create pathways to economic prosperity by launching digital careers for young adults and military veterans from underserved communities. Part of this goal is supported by our Command Shift Coalition, a national consortium of women and allies that advocate for strategies that invest in and inspire the advancement of young women of color in tech careers and aims to increase the representation of women of color in tech from 5% to 10% over the next 10 years. This coalition was sparked by ‘40 by 22’, a NPower initiative to help young women of color access the skills needed to launch careers in the tech industry in partnership with Citi Foundation’s Pathways to Progress initiative.
