Andrei Pilleren, 23

U.S. Marine Corps, Served Four Years After high school, I was unsure what I wanted to pursue, but in my last year of service, I found out about the field of cybersecurity. I started doing my own research to learn more about what it is and how I can get there. During my search, I found NPower which helped me gain valuable knowledge and skills needed to break into the tech world. Before NPower, I took a cybersecurity boot camp, but I found it lacked the fundamentals of tech. Through NPower, I was able to reinforce my skills, add to my knowledge, and obtain new certifications that will help me become more marketable. Not only did NPower help with the knowledge I needed for tech, but they also provided professional development. They helped prepare me for interviews, resume writing, and guidance with my job search. I am glad to have the support that NPower provided me along with great resources to continue my journey. I would recommend NPower to future students who are trying to break into tech.

Andrew “AJ” Silveira, 23 My academic journey began at The University of Rhode Island; however, the path wasn’t always clear. Two years in, uncertainty about my major, financial challenges, and the unforeseen impact of the global pandemic prompted a pause in my academic pursuits. During this hiatus, I spent three years navigating various roles in a restaurant, building resilience in the face of challenges. In the summer of 2023, I decided to pivot my career trajectory and enrolled in the NPower program with no prior tech experience. Despite the fear and the initial hurdles, I persevered alongside my cohort, reaching the culmination of our program. Today, I stand at the intersection of past struggles and newfound triumphs. This journey has taught me the power of adaptability and the rewards of stepping into the unknown. To my fellow classmates, thank you for the shared experience. To my support system, your encouragement has fueled my resilience. Last but not least, to the NPower organization, you’ve opened doors to a tech future I once believed was beyond my reach. As I embark on this new chapter of my life, I carry with me the lessons learned from both the hospitality and technology worlds. I hope to pay it forward by encouraging others to never give up and not let fear dictate what you can and cannot do. I am nothing but grateful for the support I have received, and I am eager to embrace the endless possibilities that lie ahead.

Ashim Mukherjee U.S. Army Veteran

Although I was a US Army veteran, my background was in finance. I was in finance (corporate) for most of my service life until I got laid off in March 2023, after working for the company for 22 years. So, finance was my passion, and I wanted to move up the ladder if I could reach it. I always enjoyed and was/still am amazed by the IT industry, such as how computers work and what these tech-savvy people do to solve problems. Not knowing much about NPower and IT, when I got the offer as a veteran and, above all, no cost to trainees to make them tech specialists, I did not even think twice about availing myself of the opportunity. I would say NPower means a lot to me. As I get deeper into the session and have the chance to learn more about NPower, it is the same, if not better, than any accredited educational institute. The instructors are knowledgeable, passionate, and ready to provide any help a trainee might need. They teach the trainees how to work in a team and how to help each other along with the study material. Although I have spent almost 25 years in a corporate environment, the professional days are a refresher. I plan to complete the journey within the specified time and get into the job market again in the foreseeable future with the knowledge I am acquiring at NPower.

Austin Silver, 25 When I was younger, I always thought that I would become either a geneticist or an artist, however, as I got older, I started to look more into sales for financial incentives. I ultimately enjoyed physical labor work; however, I felt it was time for a career change that would be less physically taxing. I’ve always had a lingering interest in technology growing up, as I grew up with it, but I never knew where to start or had the funds for courses. When my girlfriend introduced me to NPower I thought, “this is the perfect opportunity!” To me, NPower is more than just an opportunity. It showed me it can be a path to financial freedom, on top of learning from the amazing staff, being able to network with peers of varying backgrounds, and gaining real-world skills that will allow me to be competent and effective no matter where I go. One of my favorite moments in the cohort was when we were first introduced to command lines and I found myself wrapped up and enjoying the lessons, being able to see the code and watch how each specific command works within the terminal. In a perfect world, I would be an NPower alumnus returning to speak to the next series of cohorts to warn of pitfalls and give whatever wisdom and encouragement I can offer. If I were to have any power it would have to be technopathy, the ability to interact with, manipulate, and control any form of technology in this day and age would be amazing, wouldn’t it? If I could go back in time to tell my younger self anything I would tell him to pay more attention in Computer science class, “you don’t know how much you’ll need and enjoy it in the future.”

Carl Garnier, 25 Since I was a kid, I’ve been captivated by those classic sci-fi shows that fueled my love for tech. Finding my way into the NPower program? Well, that was a bit of a lucky break, thanks to the inspiring tale of a fellow grad. Having to juggle work, school, and life has been a real balancing act, but I stuck with it, always keeping my ‘why’ in mind. One of the highlights of this program has been nailing all my certifications – a clear sign of my commitment and hard graft. Besides tech, I love to just wander for hours and let my creativity flow through poetry. Then there’s the cool memory of checking out SAP, this super modern and grand place that got my imagination running wild about what’s doable. Now, as I graduate, my goal is straightforward: dive into UX Design or any tech job that brings both fulfillment and a comfy paycheck. With my sci-fi roots and NPower background, I’m stoked to shape a bright future in the tech scene.

Carlos Cobar, 26

U.S. Marine Corps, Served Six Years In my earlier ambitions, I aspired to have a career in federal law enforcement, driven by a profound desire to contribute to the betterment of my community, particularly given my military background. Concurrently, a latent fascination with the realm of technology always lingered in my thoughts. Venturing into this uncharted field presented formidable challenges, but my unwavering determination to embrace knowledge and persevere led me to the fortuitous discovery of the NPower program. NPower, to me, symbolizes boundless opportunity. Regrettably, a common inclination among veterans is skepticism when they encounter cost-free offerings, yet this program has proven to be a profoundly enriching experience. As I contemplate the future, I envisage a fulfilling career in the dynamic tech industry. If I were to possess a superpower, it would be the telekinetic prowess reminiscent of the cinematic masterpiece ‘Chronicle.’ Given the perennial traffic conundrum of New York, the ability to swiftly navigate the city would be an invaluable asset. In retrospect, I would counsel my younger self to embrace any opportunities that beckon, irrespective of the inherent risks.

As a first-generation American, a veteran who served in Operations and Plans in the United States Marine Corps, and a proud Black woman, I’ve journeyed through various industries. It’s in the realm of technology that I’ve truly discovered my passion. What sets me apart from my peers is my dedication to volunteering, my self-taught skills as a graphic designer and artist, and my unwavering interest in mental health, community organizing, and amplifying artists’ voices. Looking ahead, my aspirations within the tech industry extend beyond professional success. I yearn to lead and inspire teams to achieve not only professionally but personally as well. My heart is set on exploring opportunities to give back, emphasizing the importance of community and mentorship. Throughout this incredible journey in the NPower program, I’ve built close-knit relationships with colleagues who have become like family. My hope is that we continue to succeed and remain life-long friends, supporting each other’s dreams and endeavors. The future is bright, and I’m eager to embrace it with optimism and determination.

Chelsea Anyaegbu, 24 Before NPower, I had my eyes set on medical research and healthcare. During the pandemic, I felt so lost with where my skillsets and passion met. I saw how technology had such an impact on my journey through undergrad, but fear of the unknown was stopping me. It felt so impossible to know where to start until I came across NPower! Now that I’ve settled in with the pace of the program, I can truly say that NPower has been a supportive and well-rounded environment to cultivate my growth. I’ve interacted with so many different personalities with different areas of expertise, and it is exciting to see how diverse the world of tech is! I’ve gained a whole new perspective on what my journey could be like, and I owe it to all of you! In my perfect world, my future self would be happily employed as a cloud computer or software engineer with plenty of certifications and projects to show for it. I would have enhanced my freelancing skills in UI and web design! Diana Rogers

U.S. Army Military Spouse Before NPower, I worked as a medical clerk. During that time, I discovered my passion for technology as I enjoyed working with computer systems to help patients. I knew I wanted to transition into IT, but I lacked the necessary technical skills despite having valuable soft skills. After many unsuccessful applications for tech-related roles, I learned about NPower through an employment specialist. Upon discovering the success stories of individuals who found fulfilling careers post-program, I decided to apply. The program has equipped me with valuable technical and professional skills and industry-recognized certificates, making it a life-changing opportunity. I am confident and well-prepared to enter and succeed in the IT industry. If I could go back in time, I would tell my younger self to dream big and not settle for what you see but for what you hope for.

Donte Dorceus, 24 Aspiring to be a streamer in my childhood, I embarked on an unexpected journey into the tech world. My early affinity for YouTube over traditional TV made me appreciate content creators who were getting paid to do what they loved. However, I never considered a career in tech, thinking it was reserved for experts. My perspective changed when a friend introduced me to NPower, a program offering entry into the tech industry. Virtual machines and assignments on platforms like Replit opened new doors for me, gradually boosting my tech confidence. Through NPower, I also gained a broader understanding of professional development and its role in securing employment. My outlook on the job search process transformed significantly. In an ideal scenario, I envision a job offer post-NPower, granting me a home in California. Reflecting on my journey, I’d tell my younger self to build a PC –a task I once deemed too expensive and complex but ultimately proved rewarding in selfreliance. My story underscores the potential for growth, even in unexpected directions.

Before coming to NPower, I wanted to be a civil servant providing security to the public as a police officer. My goal was to assist people in providing safety and be able to provide a service to the people. However, after an injury in the military, I had to divert my path into tech which led me to my aspirations in Cybersecurity. I wanted to still be able to provide a service and that security in the tech world. I came to NPower with hopes and dreams of coming out of the program as a tech expert. NPower is a beacon of hope for me, from someone who is coming from nothing NPower provides me the power to change my life. I gained a lot of professional and technical knowledge thanks to the instructors at NPower. I learned knowledge as an IT specialist in Google and CompTIA, along with professional skills in interviews, resume building, and networking. In the future, I hope to start the cybersecurity program for NPower to further my career while gaining some experience as an IT helpdesk support. If I could have one superpower in the world, I’d want to be able to be invisible because cybersecurity is only now becoming more widespread and known. Cybersecurity is that secretive protector, invisible unknown, and providing safety and security to all assets. Something so invisible some of us don’t even know that we’re possibly even doing little actions that commit to it such as just shutting down our computers. If there’s one thing, I wish I could tell my younger self is to not be afraid to try. I got into technology deep diving into it in my opinion a little bit late. I feel like with my interest in the past I maybe could’ve given myself a better head start.

Elijah Tolbert, 25 Before NPower, I had given up on a dream that had started with a PC equipped with dial-up internet. That dream was to work in technology, not only maintaining it but also improving it. Today, I want to express my deepest gratitude to NPower for providing me with a transformative opportunity on my journey through the world of Information Technology. From a young age, my love for technology has been a driving force in my life, guiding me toward a path I’m truly passionate about. During my high school years, I had the incredible privilege of being a part of a robotics team. It was here that I first delved into the fascinating and ever-evolving world of technology. I discovered the thrill of problem-solving, coding, and engineering. This experience ignited a spark within me, inspiring me to pursue a career in Information Technology. My time with NPower has been nothing short of remarkable. The program equipped me with the essential tools and knowledge needed to thrive in this dynamic industry. The mentorship, training, and exposure to big tech companies have been instrumental in my personal and professional growth. NPower not only broadened my skill set but also provided a supportive community of like-minded individuals who share my passion for tech. As I embark on the next chapter of my career, I carry with me the invaluable experiences and skills that NPower has given me. I am truly grateful for this opportunity, and I am excited to continue my journey in the world of Information Technology, eager to make a meaningful impact and contribute to the ever-advancing field that has captured my heart.

Enrique Arteaga, 25 I joined NPower driven by a simple yet powerful dream: to become a Software Engineer. The challenge lies in entering the tech world without a traditional degree, but I was determined to overcome it. Throughout my NPower journey, I’ve experienced a remarkable transformation. I’m not typically the most social person, but NPower showed me the value of networking and connecting with others in the field. NPower’s opportunities gave me the motivation to dig deeper into coding languages and develop myself as a more competitive candidate. I’ll always cherish the moment when I completed my very first coding project independently, a clear symbol of my growth. Looking towards the future, my ambition is to become a fullstack developer, and I’m excited about the road that lies ahead. NPower has been the guiding light on this path. One program highlight was our visit to Colgate, which proved to be a fascinating and motivating experience. As I approach graduation, I’m eager to dive into the tech industry, armed with the skills and knowledge gained from NPower. I’m grateful for the program that has equipped me to follow my dreams and embrace a future filled with innovation and promise.

I chose NPower because of the opportunity it would bring to not only become certified but also work in a new network with like-minded individuals and passionate instructors. NPower was truly a new hope for me to take this career path further. The professional development and mentoring I received from this course has truly helped me not only in my current role but is going to help me as I continue further. In a perfect future after NPower, I see myself becoming an engineer in GM’s electric vehicle division. To wrap up my bio, I leave you with one question: What would you tell your younger self? He told me all about it and how it functioned and asked me if I was interested in joining. I was a bit skeptical, and it took a few months to think about my situation and where I wanted to be. Even before NPower, I knew I wanted to do something technical. I had a few digital IT books I bought but they were too advanced for me. I knew for certain I didn’t want to work as a waiter. There was an age limit, so I decided to just apply. I had nothing to lose, a few weeks later I had an interview. Two weeks before my last interview I gave my former boss my two-week notice. Jeremiah Campbell, 20 To me, the technical field has always been exciting. Entering college, I knew I wanted to be in a technical field. Still, I wasn’t sure what branch, until I was pointed in the direction of Cybersecurity which immediately sparked my interest. Though I knew it would be difficult, I was confident in my ability, and I chose to major in that field. But as time passed my confidence in my skills and knowledge of cybersecurity dwindled. I knew if I was going to continue my path towards tech something had to change for me to be successful. NPower showed me that I would not only learn more but my confidence in my skills would increase as well. Since joining I have not only been able to have an opportunity to gain immense technical knowledge, but I have been able to better understand my college courses. When it comes to my college courses, I can make connections. With NPower accompanying my bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity (In progress) I have no doubt in my heart that I will be able to achieve a career in tech, no longer doubting my skill level. Nicole Rojas, 24 Before starting NPower, I had little knowledge of it. I just knew it was something I wanted to do and work with in the future. I already had a background in graphic design since I completed my associate degree in it, then was pursuing my bachelor’s degree in architecture. I knew that I wanted to do something where art and tech convened but did not know exactly what. NPower was able to answer that question for me, I learned about UX Design & the world of coding. I am so thankful for the opportunity NPower has offered me.

U.S. Army, Served Eight Years Before NPower, I didn’t have an interest in technology. But one day, while I was in a season of searching for employment, someone told me about NPower’s training program in technology. Though I had no technology experience, I decided to check out their website. As I read about their mission to help “move people from poverty to economic prosperity,” and listened to videos of previous students sharing their stories about how the training at NPower had positively impacted their lives, I was deeply touched. As a result, I applied for the training and was accepted into the program. I learned so many valuable life lessons, skills in technology, and professional development. I was also stretched every which way but loose, for the better. I am so looking forward to sharing everything I have learned with the world. As I move out into the digital world, I plan to hone the skills that I have learned and acquire and develop new skills to “pay them forward.” Thank you, NPower, for adding value to people’s lives over the years through technical skills training.

Omar Emara, 25 Before NPower, I barely knew anything about the IT world. I always wanted to go into the tech field, yet I was still determining which part of the industry I wanted to pursue. My interest in tech started from a young age. I always enjoyed spending time on gaming consoles and exploring different computer operating systems. While searching for an opportunity in the tech industry, my sister found this program and informed me about it. I then researched information about the program and decided to give it a shot. I do not regret joining NPower due to the many beneficial materials covered in the program, not to mention the trainees do not pay for anything! NPower even offered the trainees a free Google IT Support certification course, which was very appreciated. After graduating from NPower, my goal is to pursue an IT professional career.

Onyinyechi “Onyi” DominicNzerem, 23 I wanted to be a computer engineer and/or dentist when I grew up. My dreams and aspirations before NPower were to be an information technology professional. I studied computer science in college. My classes in college led me down the path to a tech career. NPower is a tech training program referred to me by a friend when I felt I needed to upskill while looking for a job. He told me how NPower changed his life -- professionally and personally -- and I wanted that kind of transformation. NPower means a lot to me -- I’ve made life-long friends and mentors, I am part of NPower’s alumni, and I can refer family, friends, and acquaintances to this program. A favorite moment during my NPower experience was the in-person Professional Development days. I loved meeting my classmates in person and sharing our views on a lot of topics. That helped in develop my communication and public speaking skills. I can say that I have benefitted from the mentorship program. We were assigned mentors based on the factors we listed, and they were of great help. My future looks so bright after NPower. This program provided the technical/ professional skills I needed to solve real-world problems. Today, I am an IT Professional who has transferable skills that can be used in any industry. If I could have one superpower, it’d be time travel. I believe if I could time travel, I could get to see and experience things written in history books in real-time. What I would tell my younger self is to keep going and make her understand that her journey is different from others.

Reservist/National Guard I am thrilled to share with you my journey as I celebrate my graduation from NPower. I’m here today as a proud graduate, ready to embark on the next chapter of my life. From the very beginning, I harbored a deep fascination for the inner workings of technology, and this drove me to embark on an educational path. Through discipline, self-motivation, and a thirst for knowledge I am here today. From the moment I set my eyes on NPower, I knew I had found opportunities. Reynaldo Jean, 24 Before NPower I can honestly say I was a lost individual unsure of what I wanted to do as a career, but I always knew I wanted to learn a new skill that I would be able to live from, and seeing how technology was being used for almost everything I felt that becoming a technician was the smartest idea. While working at my job at Target I was recommended by a coworker to check out NPower and I honestly can say it was the best decision I’ve made. Not only has NPower provided me with the fundamentals of tech it also showed me how a corporate system works, and I’m very thankful for that. THANK YOU, NPOWER!

Robert Ray, 27

U.S. Marine Corps, Served Five and a Half Years I embarked on my journey, driven by a yearning for change. Trapped in a stagnant sales role, unfulfilled with scant chances for career progression, I yearned for purpose. A chance encounter with a US Navy Officer, drawn by my Marine Corps background, revealed a world of technical possibilities. NPower became my vehicle for exploration. Through this transformative experience, I discovered a newfound confidence, overcoming imposter syndrome and embracing untapped potential. As an avid gamer, I recognized my inherent aptitude for technical concepts. Commencing as a computer novice posed a significant challenge. However, with the unwavering support of my classmates, who quickly became a closeknit family, we conquered our fears and learned together, experiencing growth both technically and personally. My future in tech beckons, with a strong inclination toward security. I’m passionate about safeguarding personal and organizational data, sharing best practices, and educating others on digital security.

Shernise Sennon, 23 When I was young, I wanted to be a lawyer when I grew up, my aunt who’s a federal lawyer was my inspiration. My aspiration before NPower was to have a good career to provide for my family. My dream was to become an international poet, I always wonder what other skills I’m able to learn, how I’m able to have better communications skills, or what opportunities would come my way to have a successful life. After speaking to a close friend, I decided on the tech field. An old friend from college introduced me to NPower, after doing research about NPower and learning about their program I became very interested. After a few weeks in NPower, I’ve set a goal for myself and gained motivation in myself to finish the program and see where it leads me. Being in the program I’ve realized that I’m an introvert, in one of our in-person classes we had an activity on getting to know one another. It was a little difficult in the beginning, but I was able to be open and was able to get to know more about my classmates. I’ve benefited from the professional development program. I’m able to speak more properly when it comes to speaking up, and in our mock interviews, I’m able to notice my weaknesses and my strengths. My future after NPower looks motivational with a lot of success coming towards my way. I would tell my younger self to have confidence in myself and love myself more.

Stephen Kortum

U.S. Marine Corps, Served Nine and a Half Years While growing up, I always wanted to be a Tech professional. Starting with my first bulky IBM PC back in the 90’s. After growing up, I wasn’t as sure anymore and decided to join the US Marine Corps to find my path. After 9 years of traveling the world, and growing personally and professionally the whole time, I decided that military life wasn’t quite my dream. I decided to go back to college and get a degree in my original passion, IT. While attending I was given an email from the Veteran Rep about a program to help young adults and Veterans kickstart their IT Careers. After reading about the mission and support NPower gives, I was hooked and applied immediately. While attending NPower the technical and soft skill training and development were fantastic and helped round out my skillset. The biggest benefit though was the relationships you build while attending. Everyone on the course is a self-driven IT enthusiast and the network you build with them will follow you for the rest of your career. One of my favorite aspects of the class was the way the instructors made learning fun. I loved the fun learning environments, especially because I am a fulltime student at the same time. My plan after graduation is to an entry-level position work on my Net+ and Sec+ CompTIA Certifications and build my path toward my dream Cybersecurity job.

Stephen Young, 27 A first-generation graduate from Rutgers University. My academic journey led me to major in Economics and Philosophy, where I initially thought my future lay. However, fate had other plans, and I found my true calling in technology and education. Instead of pursuing law school, I made a life-changing decision to relocate to Houston, Texas, through Teach for America. There, I embraced teaching secondary mathematics and coaching Robotics, a move that rekindled my passion for technology in the realm of education. I also became deeply involved with ONEHouston, an education policy advocacy group, channeling my drive for change in the field. My love for problem-solving, cultivated as a secondary mathematics teacher, seamlessly fused with my newfound interest in software engineering. Proficient in HTML, JavaScript, CSS, Python, and Ruby, I embarked on a journey to merge technology with education, with the vision of creating a brighter future for students everywhere. With an unwavering commitment to the Edtech industry, I’m determined to gain invaluable experience with the goal of founding my own Edtech company. My graduation isn’t just a recognition of academic achievement but the beginning of a journey to make a lasting impact on education, using technology as a catalyst for change. I’m excited about the possibilities and eager to contribute to the world of education and technology.

Taeshon Turner, 25 Growing up I spent a lot of time utilizing technology as it evolved and grew with me. By high school, I knew I wanted to be involved in the tech field. It helped that my mom was also involved in the tech field. My uncle got his career started through NPower and told me all about it. He convinced me to give the program a shot and he was right. It has been a great opportunity, and I can feel the shift in my life and the future growing brighter for me in the Tech field. I have taken advantage of many of the benefits and opportunities provided by the program including the mentorship program which has yet to commence, however, I am still looking forward to the growth it will bring me. In a perfect world, I will go on to have a successful career in the Cloud Security field. Also, I achieved my bachelor’s degree through the affordable CUNY program that’s accessible to NPower Graduates. If I could have a superpower, it would be superintelligence. I would love to just know everything and be able to maneuver through situations correctly as swiftly as possible to minimize mistakes and make my job that much easier. Our graduates of over 8,000 veterans and young adults are hired at over 3,000 companies and nonprofits as interns and full-time employees. NPower is on a mission to create pathways to economic prosperity by launching digital careers for young adults and military veterans from underserved communities. Part of this goal is supported by our Command Shift Coalition, a national consortium of women and allies that advocate for strategies that invest in and inspire the advancement of young women of color in tech careers and aims to increase the representation of women of color in tech from 5% to 10% over the next 10 years. This coalition was sparked by ‘40 by 22’, a NPower initiative to help young women of color access the skills needed to launch careers in the tech industry in partnership with Citi Foundation’s Pathways to Progress initiative.
