CLASS SPEAKER COURTNEY GRANT

NPower New York, Tech Fundamentals Spring 2019

“I wasn’t feeling fulfilled. I ended up falling into a vicious cycle of getting a job, working hard, then getting bored. I was working survival jobs because they were necessary as opposed to finding a career that I was interested in. I wanted to find that joy again, and make a career out of it. It was clear to me that IT was the career I needed to pursue.”

I was let go of my job, could not find work, and became discouraged. I heard about NPower and decided to take the opportunity to gain new skills, have consistent employment, and advance my career. I have learned many technical skills and realized that IT certifications can translate into well-paying jobs that do not require a college degree. I look forward to learning even more and building upon my experience to increase my earning potential. After graduation, I would like to work for a company with great benefits that supports ongoing education.

During college, I fell in love with the art of coding and spent six months figuring out my next move in this space. My mother saw a news segment about NPower and brought the program to my attention. NPower gave me technical and soft skills to be an effective technologist. Everyone’s support, enthusiasm, and unity made me want to excel and persevere against all odds. Thanks to NPower, I feel like I’ve gotten my foot in the door. I’m on my way to becoming a penetration tester, but would not have gotten this far if it weren’t for this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Before NPower, I was at a standstill in life. I had customer service experience and a mental health and human services background but didn’t know what I wanted to pursue professionally. I attended a career fair where NPower representatives spoke about the high demand for women in IT, which intrigued me. I had always wanted to expand my knowledge of IT, so when the opportunity presented itself; I jumped at it. After joining NPower, I was a bit discouraged because I only knew the basics and my peers seemed to be more advanced. With the support of my fellow classmates and the encouragement from my instructors, I found the confidence to succeed. After graduation, I intend to merge my previous experience with my new passion for IT. I aspire to do big things and proud to say that NPower provided me with lifelong skills to make that possible.

INTERNSHIP  TBD Prior to joining NPower, I was working as a caterer. I always appreciated the symbiotic relationship between science and technology. As I grew older, I realized I had been taking the role of technology in everyday life for granted. Joining NPower was the best first step I could have made. I will always cherish the bonds I formed with my NPower family. They inspired me to aim for the best version of myself. The knowledge I gained at NPower has given me newfound confidence in fulfilling my goals. My ultimate goal is utilizing my IT knowledge to help in neuroscience research. We live in a technically progressive time where there are countless opportunities to contribute. I plan to utilize my time as a young IT professional.

Prior to NPower, I was working as an EMS technician, working long hours and struggling to earn just above minimum wage. In 2018, I became pregnant with my first child. This catapulted me into wanting to better myself and becoming more financially stable. After giving birth, I took some time to adjust to motherhood and prepare myself for the new challenges that lay ahead. In a matter of months, I earned my certification, enhanced my professional character, and boosted my overall confidence by entering a new field that offers so many possibilities. When we are young, we often take the power of knowledge and creativity for granted. We let obstacles overcome our minds and lose track of what we truly want in life. During my time with NPower, I was able to rediscover myself, my capabilities, and my potential.

Before NPower, I was a high school graduate working in food service. I had no other professional experience, but I was open-minded and always willing to learn new things. My brother, a graduate of NPower, told me this would be a great way to start a career. I had my doubts about the program. But after seeing my brother’s success, I decided to take his word for it and apply to the program. NPower gave me more than just an education in the basics of technology. I received a solid foundation in professionalism and other soft skills that matter just as much to my future employers. Through NPower, I received certifications and proved to myself that knowledge and hard work will always allow me to succeed. After graduation, I hope to take advantage of technological progress to be able to work remotely and pursue a well-balanced life.

I joined NPower after taking a web development coding boot camp. I learned about the software side of technology and became quite interested in topics that went beyond what was being taught at my coding boot camp. NPower taught me about the hardware I use every day and increased my curiosity for gaining a deeper understanding of computer security. My interest in building web applications grew into wanting to be able to secure these applications. After graduation, I want to enroll in the NPower cybersecurity program. My end goal is to work at a large corporation finding vulnerabilities in web applications that millions of people use every day and that come under constant cyber attacks.
