ALUMNI SPEAKER ANGELA NUNO

NPower Texas, Tech Fundamentals Spring 2019 Operation Support Specialist, Citi

“Your past does not determine your future but your current actions will. Angela Nuno joined the United States Navy immediately after graduating from high school serving five years as a Hospital Corpsman. With a background in the medical field, she enrolled into a massage therapy program earning her certification as a massage therapist. Angela worked at an Air Force base in Florida as a medical administrator, before personal reasons necessitated her move back to her home state of Texas. Upon her return, Angela began a job as a dental assistant, but long hours and low pay became a problem, especially being the parent of a young child. While working in the clinic, Angela was told about the NPower program by an employee of Citigroup who also happened to be an NPower alumnus. Immediately intrigued by the program, and the prospects of employment post-graduation, she quit her job and applied for Tech Fundamentals Class 12. Following an outstanding performance during class, Angela was selected for an internship with Citigroup and a subsequent apprenticeship with World Wide Technology. Today, Angela is an Operation Support Analyst for mobility operations, a part of the Citi technology and infrastructure team.

Uncertain of what to do after high school, I decided to join the Air Force. I had a challenging childhood with very few role models to admire, but that did not stop my ambition. The military provided an escape with opportunities to meet new people and exposure to different cultures. After my honorable separation, I decided to pursue a degree in supply chain management. I came across an NPower flier at a veteran resource center, but placed it back when I saw “IT”. I didn’t feel confident that I could pursue such a complex field until my good friend, who was a student, mentioned how much he enjoyed the course. As technology is needed in all industries, I decided to apply. A year later, I am now celebrating my ITF+ certification. NPower was a great decision for me. I am thankful to all the NPower staff, instructors, sponsors, and alumni!

For a year, I went on interviews with no luck in finding the right opportunity. I recalled meeting the Executive Director from NPower at an event and hearing how the program helped veterans with free IT training and certification. I was hesitant at first as I didn’t have technical background and seemed almost too good to be true. Three years later, I enrolled in the Tech Fundamentals program. The program has been challenging, but with hard work and a great support system, I obtained my CompTIA IT Fundamentals+ certification. I learned many skills from networking to interviewing and other real-world life skills. The alumni have been supportive in sharing their successes and connecting us with opportunities. My advice to someone interested in the program is to let NPower change your life, work hard in the program, and don’t wait three years to do it. I can see that it has been worth it already. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to the NPower staff.

Before NPower, I had spent many hours trying to teach myself how to code using online resources. It was challenging to advance without any in-person guidance. In the Coding class, I was able to interact with the instructor and classmates until I was able to resolve a problem. I discovered a new way of coding during the process. I was able to utilize these skills in my current role and create a model that would provide meaningful insights and guidance for my company. I am grateful that I was a part of the Coding class, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone who seeks an opportunity to work in tech roles.

As a military spouse, I was a dental assistant abroad, but when I returned to the United States I started working as a merchandiser in a grocery store on a military base. Wanting to transition to a new career in IT, NPower helped me with my transition and to obtain my CompTIA IT Fundamentals+ certification. I am so happy that NPower gave me another opportunity to learn and enhance my technical skills through the Coding program. Thanks to all the NPower staff members for their support and help in starting my digital career.

TERICA SHEPARD U.S. ARMY Served 23 years Plano, TX

After high school, I joined the Army but wasn’t focused on what I wanted to do. I wanted a job but had no specific goal. I enjoyed being in the Army and served as a career counselor until my retirement. My career ended due to a medical injury. Once I recovered, I started job searching again but realized my skills were outdated. During my search, I started my own business. I started looking for programs that would make me marketable and discovered NPower. The program was challenging, but my progress was rewarding. If you don’t quit, they won’t quit on you. The program has shown me how to build on what I now know. The NPower staff have taught me many aspects of coding in a short amount of time. I am thankful for this experience that will benefit me as an employee or as an exceptional business owner.

One of our priorities as an intelligence analyst is to protect our nation’s security while monitoring and analyzing communications on the global network. After separating from the USAF, I started the NPower program. The program has helped me learn fundamental technical skills, earn my certification, and ultimately, build a solid foundation of knowledge to upstart my career in the IT industry. With my previous education, my NPower program knowledge, and my military experience, I know I’ll enjoy diving into the IT field.
