Polytunnel Covers
Visqueen’s new generation polythene films combine all the benefits of previous films (great thermic and light transmission properties), but unlike normal greenhouse films (and glass) which prevent short wavelength UV light (UVB) from reaching your crop, this ‘UV open’ film allows UVB to enter the greenhouse. This can have many benefits for both edible and ornamental crops, such as enhancing the fragrance, taste, colour, earlier harvesting and longer post-harvest shelf life. In addition, ‘UV open’ films pro mote plant anti-oxidants which are good for health & encourage stronger plants. This greatly benefits plant raisers and young plant growers as stronger plants can be easier to plant out thus saving time and money.
Long-Life: Our polytunnel covers are 180 micron (720g) thickness, and have a 7 season guarantee against UV degradation (with the exception of green and white blackout polythene and Super Lux 50:50) However, it’s not unusual for our covers to be replaced after 10-12 years (or even longer). Remember—an extra season or two not only makes a thicker cover more economical but also saves on the cost of fitting. Thinner, cheaper films are available with a 4-5 season guarantee, but our polythene far exceeds our expectations and are more resistant to mechanical damage.
Calculating Sheet Width You should measure over the circumference of the polytunnel using a reel tape measure (or a piece of rope), and make the following allowances: Trenching in to the ground

Click here to go to our handy online polythene calculator Calculating Sheet Length Once you’ve measured the length of your polytunnel you need to make an allowance for the ends, especially if your cover is fixed to the end frames rather than fixed to the end hoops. The width of the structure and the width of the doors are the main considerations. As a general rule, when fixing to the end frames you should add 3mtr (10ft) per end, so for a 30mtr (100ft) tunnel you would order 36mtr (120ft) long polythene sheet. A further 3mtr (10ft) could also be required to allow for the panels at each side of the door openings (if required). This extra 3mtr (10ft) should be enough to allow to both ends of the tunnel. Please Note: All our measurements are based on current Northern Polytunnel models. Measurement and allowance guidelines are given in good faith, but due to variability in polytunnel design, no responsibility can be accepted for polythene orders which are placed on the basis of these guidelines if later found to be the wrong size. Due to its clarity, clear polythene allows around 2% more light to pass through the polythene compared to a light-diffusing film. Although light-diffusing films have several advantages over clear films, if the extra light is more beneficial to your crop (or geographical latitude) then ‘Lumisol’ clear polythene may be the right choice. Thermic Effect: The thermicity of Lumisol polythene can give 3-4°C frost protection, or reduce energy costs by approx. 10% in heated polytunnels. Anti-Fog (condensation reduction) Thanks to its unique additive, Lumisol® is able to control the condensation of water on the underside of the tunnel cover. Providing the film is correctly fitted, water will condense uniformly as a very thin layer which, instead of remaining in position as droplets creating a fogging effect, runs down the sheet. This reduces the risk of water dripping on to the plants below and prevents the loss of light caused by these droplets, which can amount for as much as 15% light reduction. The effectiveness is reduced over the life of the cover, but an anti-condensation solution (Sunclear©) can be re-applied with a sprayer after several years if required.

Light-diffusing polythene films scatter the light as it passes through the polythene. This enables the light to penetrate deep in to the plant canopy, as it hits the plant from all directions, not just from the direction of the sun. This ‘diffused’ light reduces the higher foliage from shading the lower parts of the plant.

SUPER LUX
The benefits of diffused light vary from crop to crop, month to month and region to region. Across the UK, polytunnel cover sales are split fairly evenly between clear and diffusing polyethylene. Some growers have fully embraced diffused polyethylene whereas others argue that light-diffusing polythene is better suited for sunnier climates. The reality is that very highly diffusing films perform well under clear skies in the summer months but in cloudy conditions and during the ‘shoulders’ of the growing season sunlight is already diffused and this can lead to too much light being scattered out of the greenhouse. It’s for this reason we developed SuperLux 50:50 which has been designed and formulated to provide just the right level of light diffusion for the UK climate. SuperLux 50:50 has built-in anti-drip (AD) properties which help reduce the risk of fungal diseases such as Downy mildew and Botrytis cinerara. Thanks to the films unique AD technologies condensation on the film surface is much reduced thereby minimising both the risk of water droplets falling on the crop below and light loss caused by those droplets. We very precisely combine our own blend of IR additives and EVA in such a way as to offer the most effective thermic properties available today. This offers unparalleled protection from frost and low temperatures and maximizes the opportunity for earlier harvesting. SuperLux 50:50 has been designed for the UK market at the industry standard 150 microns thickness and by sourcing only the highest quality materials, coupled with industry leading quality control, we ensure this product has the highest possible mechanical strength and durability. It comes with a 5 year guarantee against premature UV degradation (incremental) but has a life expectancy of 7-8 years. Green & white polythene was originally formulated to meet the needs of the mushroom grower. The green outer layer helps this cover blend in with the environment, whilst the white inner layer reflects internal lighting to provide a pleasant working environment. A black core layer ensures complete opacity (black-out) and contributes to the durability of the film. This film is widely used for other applications, such as livestock housing, fish farms and protective structures. As this polythene is black-out, artificial lighting will be required.

Shade House Net Covers WIDTH
Our in-house fabrication department can produce net covers to any size. Our standard shade net covers are dark green with a 40%-45% shade value, but heavier shade values can be catered for. Our production method spaces the seams between 2m-3m apart (depending on the size), with the seams running parallel with the hoops (width-ways). Bespoke nets can be supplied which can include hemming and eyelets. Any size can be fabricated. Phone for details. Click here to go to page 49 for standard rolls of shade netting. PVC covers are available in a range of colours
PVC coated fabrics are the preferred cladding material for most garden centre retail canopies, and are available in a range of colours including translucent. Translucent PVC cladding is especially popular due to its higher light transmission properties and has become the standard product in the UK.

POLYTHENE COVERS
Our in-house fabrication department can produce PVC sheets to almost any size. All seams are heat welded to create a join which is stronger than the material itself.
