History THE HOUSES
85 Main Street | c. 1725 The Jabez Bunker-Prince Gardner House at 85 Main Street is a two-story, timber-frame house built in several stages beginning as early as 1725 by Jabez Bunker, who owned a large tract of land on Main Street, extending to present-day 95 Main. The building’s center-entry façade with end-wall chimneys is believed to date from major enlargements made by Prince Gardner around 1795, although many of the exterior’s Greek Revival style details date from the second quarter of the nineteenth century. The house’s scale, form and details mark it as an ambitious example of its period and of the several periods of alteration and enlargement by which it achieved its present form. Marie and John Sussek, Honorary Chairs of the 2020 August Fête, purchased the home in 1976. In 2003, they placed a preservation restriction on the home. The easement, held by Nantucket Preservation Trust, protects the building’s exterior, and the footprints of the main house and garage. Many interior elements on the first floor are also protected, including all interior moldings, doors, t ransom lights, door surrounds, fireplace surrounds, windows and window sash, the staircase and balusters, newel post, and mortgage button. 27 Main Street, Siasconset | 1848 Atlantic House, at 27 Main Street in Siasconset, was built in 1848 as one of the first hotels to cater to the burgeoning summer resort industry on Nantucket. In the 1920s, the former hotel was repositioned on the property and renovated to be a private residence by Martha and David Gray, noted benefactors of Nantucket. Today, it is the home of Samantha and Matthew Fremont-Smith. Samantha’s parents, Sherry and Don Lourie, purchased the property in 1969 and placed a preservation restriction on the home’s façade and exterior grounds, held by the ’Sconset Trust. After a ssuming ownership of the property in 2009, the Fremont-Smiths completed a sensitive restoration in keeping with the home’s history, working with Chris Dallmus of Design Associates and Mark Godfrey of Godfrey Construction, Inc. The gardens feature a 1920s-era greenhouse and have played host for generations of memories for the Lourie and Fremont-Smith families. In 2011, Nantucket Preservation Trust awarded the John A. and Katherine S. Lodge Stewardship Award to the Fremont-Smith Family.

10 Martins Lane|1756 |moved to Martins Lane in 1801 When Ken Jennings and Al Messina first saw inside the lean-to house at 10 Martins Lane in 2017, they felt they had found an “untouched gem” and jumped at the chance to purchase it. The home, built on Fair Street in 1756 and moved to Martins Lane in 1801, had been owned by the same family for 75 years and used exclusively as a summer home. Jennings and Messina recently completed a renovation and restoration of the home to allow for year-round Nantucket living. Projects included installing central heating and restoring the home’s four fireplaces to working condition. All historic floors, windows, trim, and hardware were restored and retained. The home’s narrow winder staircase in the front entry was retained, but to allow for easier access to the second floor, a more accessible staircase was added at the rear of the home by extending a dormer. A porch addition was converted into a first-floor bedroom, and a new porch was added. The bedroom addition and stair alteration were done sensitively in order to maintain the home’s scale and exterior appearance from the street, and the project won NPT’s Historical Renovation Award in 2020.

55 Union Street|1834 The Greek Revival home at 55 Union Street was constructed by prolific island builder John B. Nicholson in 1834. Nicholson developed much of the block bounded by Union Street, Orange Street, and York Street in the 1830s, but prior to this, it had been a more rural area of settlement by African Americans, called Newtown. Essex Boston, an African American man and relative of Seneca Boston, builder of 27 York Street, likely lived in an older home on this property, prior to the current building’s construction. 55 Union Street has a 4-bay plan common in homes built by Nicholson, with each floor consisting of three rooms and a hall built around a c entral chimney mass. Michelle Elzay and Pen Austin, together with Ginger Andrews, the home’s p revious owner, won Nantucket Preservation Trust’s Architectural Preservation Award in 2016 for the restoration of the property. The careful, sensitive restoration preserved the home’s interior floorplan, lime plaster walls and ceilings, floorboards, paneled doors, baseboards, interior paneled window trim, mantelpieces, balustrades, and more.

27 York Street|c. 1774 The Boston-Higginbotham House at 27 York Street was constructed c. 1774 by Seneca Boston, a weaver and formerly enslaved man. The home boasts more than two hundred years of ownership by free Black Nantucketers. It was owned by Boston’s descendants until 1919. In 1920, cook and domestic worker Florence Higginbotham purchased the home. The house, originally a simple lean-to structure, has been altered many times over the years. The Museum of African American History of B oston and Nantucket completed a multi-year restoration of the house and its outbuildings, w inning NPT’s 2020 Architectural Preservation Award. The Museum, working with architect Marsha Fader and builder Chuck Lenhart of Sandcastle Construction, made careful decisions to utilize d ifferent rooms of the house to emphasize 18th, 19th, and 20th century s tories while h onoring the full two hundred years of African American ownership. H ighlights include Florence’s 1920s-era kitchen, complete with her H ousehold Regal C ookstove, found in pieces in the basement and beautifully restored for p resent-day use, a 19th-century Greek Revival mantelpiece, and 18th- century fireplace paneling. The home will be open to the public while also serving as housing for MAAH interns and visiting scholars. The newly restored Boston-Higginbotham House and outbuildings, together with the African Meeting House, now form a complete campus where centuries of Nantucket’s African American history can be experienced and researched.
